Abstract
Although seasonal variations in semen quality and fertility have been studied to a considerable extent in breeding bulls, the effect of climatic variables on sperm functional competency has not been understood in detail. The present study analyzed sperm functional parameters in breeding bulls, over a period of 1 year, and assessed the effect of climatic variables on fertility associated sperm parameters. Seasons were categorized into summer, rainy, autumn, and winter based on the meteorological data. Semen was collected from crossbred bulls (n = 7) across the seasons and evaluated for functional membrane integrity, acrosome reaction status, protamine deficiency, capacitation, and lipid peroxidation status using specific fluorescent probes. The results of the present study revealed that bulls produced higher (p < 0.05) viable and acrosome intact spermatozoa during the autumn. The proportion of uncapacitated spermatozoa was also higher (p < 0.05) during autumn. Further, correlation of sperm functional attributes with environmental variables revealed that sperm viability was significantly (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with daylength and temperature; acrosomal integrity was significantly (p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with day length; and protamine deficiency had significant (p < 0.05) positive correlation with day length and average temperature, and negative correlation with relative humidity. It was concluded that semen produced during autumn was superior to the semen produced during other seasons in terms of sperm functional competencies required for fertility.

Abstract
The negative impact of heat stress on cattle growth, development, reproduction and production has been quite alarming across the world. Climate change elevates earth surface temperature which exacerbates the wrath of heat stress on cattle. Moreover, cattle in tropical and sub-tropical countries are most commonly affected by the menace of heat stress which severely wane their production and productivity. In general, cattle exhibit various thermoregulatory responses such as behavioural, physiological, neuro-endocrine and molecular responses to counteract the terrible effects of heat stress. Amongst the aforementioned thermoregulatory responses, behavioural, physiological and neuro-endocrine responses are regarded as most conventional and expeditious responses shown by cattle against heat stress. Furthermore, molecular responses serve as the major adaptive response to attenuate the harmful effects of heat stress. Therefore, present review highlights the significance of behavioural, physiological, neuro-endocrine and molecular responses which act synergistically to combat the deleterious effects of heat stress thereby confer thermo-tolerance in cattle.

Abstract
In the current era of genomic selection, there is an increased demand to collect semen from genomically selected sires at a young age. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of bull age, ejaculate number, and season of collection on semen production (ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm number; TSN) and sperm motility (prefreeze and post-thaw total and gross motility) parameters in Holstein Friesian bulls in a commercial artificial insemination (AI) center. The study involved the interrogation of a large dataset collected over a 4-yr period, (n = 8,983 ejaculates; n = 176 Holstein Friesian bulls aged between 9 mo and 8 yr). Bulls aged less than 1 yr had the poorest semen production and sperm motility values for all parameters assessed compared with bulls older than 1 yr (P < 0.01). First ejaculates had greater semen production and greater prefreeze motility values than second consecutive ejaculates (P < 0.01), but despite this, there was no difference in post-thaw motility. When subsequent ejaculates were collected from bulls aged less than 1 yr, semen production and sperm motility did not differ compared with mature bulls. Semen collected in winter was poorest in terms of sperm concentration and TSN, but best in terms of post-thaw motility (P < 0.01). In conclusion, second ejaculates can be collected, particularly from bulls aged less than 1 yr, without a significant decrease in post-thaw sperm motility, thus may be a useful strategy to increase semen availability from young genomically selected AI bulls in high demand.

Abstract
Estudou-se a influência das quatro estações do ano nas características do sêmen e nas concentrações de testosterona e cortisol em touros. Cinco touros Nelore e cinco Simental entre 48 e 72 meses de idade, criados extensivamente, foram avaliados andrologicamente por meio de exames físicos das características morfológicas do sêmen e das concentrações séricas de testosterona e cortisol. Houve redução na motilidade e no vigor do sêmen no inverno (P<0,05) na raça Simental. Observou-se correlação (P<0,01) entre testosterona x motilidade (0,69) e testosterona x vigor (0,57) na raça Simental, e cortisol x motilidade (0,68) e cortisol x vigor (0,65) na raça Nelore. O efeito das estações do ano modificou a qualidade do sêmen com aumento da motilidade e vigor espermáticos na primavera e verão nos touros Simental. A concentração de cortisol diminuiu no outono nos touros Nelore.

Abstract
The objective was to compare the relative response between rams and bulls in characteristics of LH, FSH and testosterone (T) secretion, during and after long-term treatment with GnRH analogs. Animals were treated with GnRH agonist, GnRH antagonist, or vehicle (Control) for 28 days. Serial blood samples were collected on day 21 of treatment, and at several intervals after treatment. Injections of natural sequence GnRH were used to evaluate the capacity of the pituitary to release gonadotropins during and after treatment. Treatment with GnRH agonist increased basal LH and T concentrations in both rams and bulls, with a greater relative increase in bulls. Endogenous LH pulses and LH release after administration of GnRH were suppressed during treatment with GnRH agonist. Treatment with GnRH antagonist decreased mean hormone concentrations, LH and T pulse frequency, and the release of LH and T after exogenous GnRH, with greater relative effects in bulls. Rams previously treated with antagonist had a greater release of LH after administration of GnRH compared with control rams, while rams previously treated with agonist showed a reduced LH response. Bulls previously treated with agonist had reduced FSH concentrations and LH pulse amplitudes compared with control bulls while bulls previously treated with antagonist had greater T concentrations and pulse frequency. The present study was the first direct comparison between domestic species of the response in males to treatment with GnRH analogs. The findings demonstrated that differences do occur between rams and bulls in LH, FSH and testosterone secretion during and after treatment. Also, the consequences of treatment with either GnRH analog can persist for a considerable time after discontinuation of treatment.
