Postpartum reproductive performance in crude protein-restricted beef cows: return to estrus and conception

Serum Amyloid A Concentrations of Healthy and Clinically Diseased Japanese Black Breeding Cattle-Preliminary Measurements for Determining the Cut-Off Concentrations

The present study aimed to compare serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations of Japanese Black (JB) breeding cows in both clinically normal and diseased cows diagnosed by veterinarians using modified latex agglutination turbidimetric immunoassay (LATIA) to determine the cut-off values for healthy and diseased JB cows. For the comparison, a total of 289 serum samples of healthy cows without any clinical symptoms intended for the metabolic profile test and 66 serums from diseased cows clinically diagnosed by veterinarians were measured for the SAA concentrations. A significant difference (p-value = 6.68 × 10-29) was observed in the mean SAA concentrations between the healthy (2.8 ± 3.2 mg/L) and diseased (54.8 ± 76.8 mg/L) groups, and the median concentrations of the healthy and diseased groups were 1.5 mg/L and 31.2 mg/L, respectively. Finally, the cut-off SAA concentrations at each probability were 2.9 mg/L (p = 0.05), 5.7 mg/L (p = 0.1), 13.7 mg/L (p = 0.5), and 21.8 mg/L (p = 0.9), respectively, and 6.5 mg/L (p = 0.122) based on evaluation performed using the receiver operating characteristic curve. The results indicated that, with the practical application of the obtained cut-off value, the measurement of SAA concentrations for JB breeding cows with LATIA could be potentially beneficial in the early evaluation of inflammatory diseases in JB breeding cows and possibly useful in the prevention of not only metabolic diseases but also non-nutritional diseases during the perinatal period of JB breeding cows.

The effect of precipitation received during gestation on progeny performance in Bos indicus influenced beef cattle

The objective of this retrospective study was to determine the effect of precipitation level during key fetal development periods on beef progeny performance. The hypothesis that was precipitation level during different periods of gestation would program subsequent calves for an environment similar to that experienced in utero resulting in altered growth and reproductive performance. Data were collected on Brangus cows (n = 2,429) over a 46-yr span at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center. Recorded precipitation values were used to calculate average precipitation associated with total gestation (April–March), early gestation, (July–September), and late gestation (December–February). These values were used to classify treatments: low (z value ≤ –1.00), average (z value –0.99 to +0.99), and high (z value ≥ +1.00) for each time period. Calves experiencing high precipitation throughout gestation had heavier body weight (BW) at birth (P = 0.02), weaning (P = 0.05), and adjusted 205-d BW (P = 0.04) than those experiencing low precipitation . Female progeny gestated during low precipitation throughout gestation were more likely to remain (P < 0.0001) in the herd and calve after the age of 8 yr when compared to heifers experiencing high precipitation levels in utero (38% vs. 16% ± 5%, respectively). In addition, a greater percentage (P < 0.0001) of heifers experiencing low precipitation levels during the early gestation period produced a calf within the herd after 8 yr of age. Similarly, calves experiencing low precipitation during those same time points also had a greater number of calves while in production (P < 0.0001) when compared to the average and high precipitation groups. These results indicate that selection of heifers exposed to lower than average precipitation levels in utero may result in increased herd retention and productivity.

A trial of sepia 200

The effect of Sepia 200c on the reproductive performance of Friesian cross dairy cows was assessed in a controlled trial from September 1989 until August 1990. Overall reproductive performance was monitored monthly and pregnancy diagnosis and cyclical status was determined. The cows were randomly allocated to 4 groups, untreated controls, placebo controls, Sepia-treated 24 to 48 hours postpartum and Sepia-teated day 14 postpartum.

The trial was concluded in July 1990 when another treatment was employed to reduce declining herd reproductive status. Statistical analysis of the results was based on differences between the placebo control and the Sepia-treated, 24–48 hours postpartum, the pooled control groups and placebo control with Sepia day 14, and lastly the difference between the 2 Sepia-treated groups.

The highest rates of periparturient disease occurred in the Sepia-treated groups, the highest single incidence rate of periparturient disease risk (cysts) found in the cows in the Sepia 24 to 48 hours postpartum group. Sepia day 14 produced the largest percentage of cows seen in first oestrus (45%), the largest number of observed heats (60%) in the cows without periparturient disease risk factors or recurrent traits and the lowest total mean value days to oestrus post-treatment.

Sepia day 14 produced the largest percentage that held to first service, the lowest post-treatment period to first service, calving to conception interval, mean number of services and rectal examinations per conception, mean day calving interval and calving index. The results show that the effect of Sepia 200c administered to cows two weeks postpartum increased the numbers of cows observed in first oestrus, held to first service and lowered the calving to conception interval and calving index. The results of the Sepia day 14 postpartum group were also found to be compatible with the same group data reported in the previous study.

A study using Sepia 200c given prophylactically postpartum to prevent anoestrus problems in the dairy cow

The results obtained from a study model using Sepia 200c in a herd of dairy cows led to an extended study. Overall reproductive performance was monitored monthly by a farm action list and the technique of palpation of the ovaries per rectum was used to determine pregnancy and cyclical status. A total of 101 cows were randomly treated with Sepia 200c on day 14 or 21 postpartum.

Statistical analysis of the results was based on the differences between the untreated Control and Sepia-treated groups in periparturient disorders and pre- and post-service periods, and between the two Sepia-treated groups.

In the pre-service period, a significant difference was found between the sepia-treated groups in the proportion of heifers calved, the number of assisted calvings and pre-service problems compared to Control. A difference of 9.9 total mean days to oestrus post-treatment was found between the Sepia-treated groups.

During the post-service period, significant differences were found in the conception rate to first service, the percentage of cows in calf and total culled.

A reduction (non significant) was found in the 21-day treatment group compared to control and 14-day treatment in the mean days calving to conception interval and the calving index. However, between the Sepia-treated groups a significant difference was found in total mean days calving to conception interval.

The results of this study appear to demonstrate a difference in effect between the Sepia-treated groups and Control group. The study has been extended into a double blind placebo trial to find the effect of using a placebo and assess the use of Sepia given earlier postpartum on herd reproductive performance.

Supplementation of metabolizable protein during late gestation and fetal number impact ewe organ mass, maternal serum hormone and metabolite concentrations, and conceptus measurements

To examine the effects of maternal metabolizable protein (MP) supplementation during late gestation on serum hormone and metabolites and organ masses, multiparous ewes (n = 45) carrying singletons or twins were allotted randomly (within pregnancy group) to 1 of 3 treatments: 60% (MP60), 80% (MP80), or 100% (MP100) of MP requirements. Blood samples were drawn before the initiation of diets (day 100) and before slaughter (day 130) for chemistry panel analysis and weekly for hormone analysis including progesterone (P4) and estradiol-17β (E2). At day 130, ewe organ masses were recorded. Despite being fed isocaloric diets, MP60 ewes gained less weight throughout pregnancy compared with MP80 and MP100 ewes which were similar. Although diet did not impact E2 or P4 concentrations, ewes carrying twins had greater (P < 0.05) concentrations of both as gestation advanced. Albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, and total protein were reduced (P < 0.05) in MP60 compared with MP100 ewes near term. There was a diet by fetal number interaction (P = 0.03) for lactate dehydrogenase. Twin-carrying MP80 ewes had greater lactate dehydrogenase compared with all other groups on day 130 of gestation. Ewes that were fed MP80 had greater body weight on day 130 of gestation compared with MP60 ewes. Kidney and heart weights were lighter in MP60 ewes compared with MP80 ewes. There was a maternal diet by fetal number interaction (P = 0.05) on fetal weight per unit empty ewe body weight. In ewes carrying singletons, MP60 ewes supported less fetal weight compared with MP100. In contrast, MP60 ewes supported more fetal mass compared with MP100 ewes when carrying twins. The level of protein, and not just total energy, in the diet appears to impact some aspects of the maternal system. Moreover, it appears some measurements of mobilizing maternal body resources are enhanced in ewes carrying twins.

Japanese Black breeding herd exhibiting low blood urea nitrogen: a metabolic profile study examining the effect on reproductive performance

Ten reared cows of a Japanese Black cattle herd in Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, exhibited extremely low blood urea nitrogen (BUN) concentration (2.6 ± 0.6 mg/dL). Examination of dietary feed nutrition and relevant pastureland soil content suggested a correlation with crude protein (CP) deficiency or unbalanced nutritional dietary feeds. Thirteen months after the introduction of a dietary remedial measure (bean cake supplementation), BUN, total cholesterol and albumin concentration from five of the original 10 cows increased significantly compared with their values of before the dietary remedy. The postpartum day open period was significantly lower after the dietary remedial measure than that before it. The abnormally low BUN levels of the cattle herd may be due to inadequate dietary nutritional content, primarily from the imbalance of total digestible nutrient and CP of the feed and far lower han average CP value. In conclusion, routine examination of serum biochemical parameters in Japanese Black breeding cattle may be a useful strategy for determining subclinical metabolic failure of cattle herds, and consequently, its effect on reproductive performance of the herd.

Metabolic profile of Japanese Black breeding cattle herds: usefulness in selection for nutrient supplementation to enhance reproductive performance and regional differences

The study aims were (1) to confirm the effects of nutritional improvement in prepartal and postpartal periods, monitored using the serum metabolic profile test (MPT) and reproductive performance, and (2) to clarify regional characteristics of the MPT results within our jurisdiction by using our MPT database. Experiment 1: Among 42 breeding cattle herds in our jurisdiction mainly fed home-pasture roughage, 3 experimental herds showing subnormal blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were selected and compared with 1 representative excellent herd. Dietary remedial measures were implemented from feed analysis in each herd. BUN concentration in all 3 herds increased significantly, and open days postpartum in 2 of the herds were significantly reduced, compared with values before dietary supplementation. Experiment 2: Thirty-seven herds within our jurisdiction were grouped into 3 categories (Area 1, 2 and 3) by location and soil condition of the herd pastureland. The MPT and reproductive performance in cows whose blood samples were collected at both prepartum (60-20 days before calving) and postpartum (30-90 days after calving) were compared among the 3 areas. Significant regional differences were found in prepartal albumin, total cholesterol, BUN, and glucose and postpartal BUN, glucose and open days (P<0.05). Overall, the MPT (especially BUN) might be useful for determining the metabolic nutritional status of breeding cattle herds, particularly those fed home-pasture roughage. Additionally, poor/unsatisfactory reproductive performance of beef breeding cattle herds probably reflects inadequate nutritional content of the diet, possibly arising from regional pastureland differences.

Milk yield, udder health and reproductive performance in Swedish organic and conventional dairy herds

Organic dairy farming is an expanding segment of the dairy sector where cow management differs from the conventional model in many respects. Thus, a comparative evaluation of disease and welfare status in organically and conventionally managed dairy cows is required. Assessment of milk yield, udder health and reproductive performance (RP) was done in 20 organically and 20 conventionally managed Swedish dairy herds. In accordance with earlier findings we confirmed lower milk yield in organic cows. Udder health and RP were chosen as indicators of animal health in view of their clinical relevance and the availability of appropriate data bases providing good background knowledge for further animal health assessment. No obvious differences were found in the investigations of somatic cell count (SCC) profiles or time to veterinary-treated cases of mastitis between organically and conventional managed cows. Pregnancy success at first insemination, an appropriate measurement of RP with biological interpretation and background, did not reveal any difference between management types, whereas the hazard rate-ratio (HR) of having a calving-interval was significantly lower (HR=0·71) in organically managed cows. The calving-interval is an important financial determinator in dairy production, but it is not considered an optimal indicator of biologic relevance as it partially reflects farmer decisions. In conclusion, the organically managed cows in this study did not differ from conventionally managed cows in udder health or RP, with the exception of calving interval.

Effects of body condition score at parturition and postpartum protein supplementation on estrous behavior and size of the dominant follicle in beef cows

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of BCS at calving and the amount of postpartum protein supplementation on the dominant follicle (DF) and behavioral characteristics at the first postpartum estrus of mature beef cows. Multiparous Angus x Hereford cows (n = 45) were fed to calve in thin (T; < 5) or moderate (M; >or=5) BCS. Cows were stratified by BCS and calving date, and randomly assigned to receive lesser (L; 1.2 kg/d) or greater (G; 2.5 kg/d) amounts of a 42% CP supplement. All cows grazed the same native grass pasture and were fed in individual stalls for 49 +/- 2 d. Beginning 20 d after calving, blood samples were collected from each cow thrice weekly, and estrous behavior was monitored continuously with a radiotelemetry system. At 4 to 16 h after the onset of estrus, size of the DF was determined by ultrasonography. Body condition score of T cows was less (P < 0.01) at calving than M cows; L and G cows had similar BCS at calving and at the end of the feeding period. Body weight gains during treatment did not differ for L or G cows. Duration from calving to first estrus was greater (P < 0.01) for T than M cows. The incidence of a short luteal phase before first estrus was not influenced by BCS or protein supplement. Concentrations of IGF-I in plasma tended (P < 0.07) to be greater and size of the DF was greater (P < 0.01) for M than T cows. Size of the DF tended (P < 0.06) to be greater for G than L cows. Duration and number of mounts received at the first estrus were not influenced by BCS or supplement. Pregnancy rate of M cows during the breeding season was greater (P < 0.05) than T cows. Postpartum protein intake and BCS at calving influenced the size of the DF at the first postpartum estrus in mature suckled beef cows. Cows should be managed to calve in moderate BCS and maintain BW after parturition to decrease the interval to first estrus, increase follicular development, and maximize pregnancy rate.

Effects of supplementation and stocking rate on body condition and production parameters of multiparous beef cows

Fall-calving multiparous Angus × Hereford cows 3 to 10 years of age were stratified by age in a three by two factorial treatment arrangement to evaluate the efficacy of modifying stocking rate and supplementation strategy to manage cow body condition and production parameters over a 5-year study. Efficacy was evaluated quarterly in association with calving, breeding, weaning, and mid way between weaning and calving (i.e. in August). Three protein supplementation strategies (none, standard, strategic) were imposed across both a moderate (0·3 cows per ha) and a high (0·4 cows per ha) stocking rate. In the strategically supplemented group, protein supplement was provided to cows with a body condition score <5·5 at the quarterly evaluations. There was an effect of supplementation on pregnancy rate, which in combination with previously established culling practices resulted in different age profiles amongst supplementation strategies in years 2 to 5 (P < 0·01). Two statistical analyses were therefore conducted to dissociate the confounding effects of supplementation strategy and age. One model included the effect of stocking rate, supplementation strategy, production year, and all interactions; the second included the addition of age and its interactive effects. Stocking rate and supplementation strategy affected pregnancy rate in each of the models (P = 0·003 and P = 0·10, respectively). Standard, non-supplemented and strategically supplemented animals had estimated pregnancy rates of 0·83, 0·76, and 0·79, respectively (P = 0·10). The effects of nutrition on both calving interval and birth weight were independent of the model employed. Animals that were not supplemented had extended calving intervals (P = 0·06), but there was no effect of stocking rate (P > 0·10). Birth weight was not affected by supplementation strategy or stocking rate (P > 0·10). The lower 205-day weights of calves on a heavy compared with moderate stocking rate was independent of age (P = 0·02). However, the increased 205-day weight of calves born to strategically supplemented cows compared with those born to unsupplemented cows was only evident when data were not corrected for differences in age among groups (P = 0·03). Likewise, analyses of cow condition parameters using models without and with age resulted in different interpretations. These results suggest that strategic and standard supplementation result in similar animal performance and that the improvement in herd productivity associated with altering stocking rate and supplementation may partially be due to altered herd age dynamics.

Supplementation with Urea and Molasses and Body Weight, Milk Yield and Onset of Ovarian Cyclicity in Cows

Ten multiparous crossbred local Zebu cows were randomly divided into two nutritional groups (A and B) to determine the effect of urea-molasses-mineral block supplementation on body weight gain, milk production, and onset of ovarian cyclicity after calving. Both groups had farm rations daily, but the supplemented group (B) was provided with an additional diet daily of 250 g urea-molasses-mineral block. The cows in group A required 80-120 days (98.0 +/- 6.7 days) until peak milk progesterone concentrations and 60-80 days (72.0 +/- 3.8 days) were required for group B (p<0.05). Group B needed a shorter period for expression of standing estrus (91-101 days; mean 96.2 +/- 2.3 days) than group A [130-153 (141.6 +/- 4.6) days; p<0.01]. For groups A and B, body weight gain was 8.4 +/- 3.4 kg and 18.4 +/- 3.2 kg, respectively (p<0.01). The average milk production of groups A and B were 3.3 +/- 1.0 and 4.8 +/- 1.6 L/day, respectively (p>0.05). There was linear improvement in milk yield from Day 60 postpartum up to Day 90 of lactation in group B (supplemented). However, in group A, milk production decreased starting on Day 40 after parturition.

The effect of dietary protein restriction on the secretion of LH and FSH in pre-pubertal female lambs

The effect of restricted dietary protein on the synthesis, storage and release of LH and FSH was studied in pre-pubertal female lambs. The experiment started when the lambs were aged 12 weeks and weighed 26.0+/-1.6 kg. It was conducted for 25 weeks. The lambs were fed isocaloric diets containing either a restricted level of crude protein (8% CP; n=6; treatment R) or an elevated one (18% CP; n=4; treatment E). At 37 weeks of age and before the first oestrous cycle, blood samples were collected over 6 h at 10 min intervals for LH assay. The lambs were slaughtered and their brains recovered and fixed in situ. Immuno-reactive (IR) LH and FSH cells were localised by immunohistochemistry techniques. Messenger RNA analyses used by non-isotope in situ hybridisation with sense and anti-sense riboprobes from beta subunits of LH and FSH cDNA clones. Data were generated using computer analysis to measure the proportion of IR and/or hybridising cells and their optical density for immuno-staining and hybridisation signal. Plasma LH was measured by RIA. The daily live-weight gains were 56.5+/-13.1 g and 97.8+/-14.3 g for R and E lambs, respectively (P<0.05), so that final weights at slaughter were 36.1+/-1.97 kg and 39.1+/-3.44 kg, respectively (P<0.05). The number of cells expressing LH beta mRNA and the optical density of this hybridisation signal was significantly (P<0.001) lower in the R lambs but the number of IR LH positive cells was higher (P<0.001) than for the E lambs. The concentration of LH in the plasma of R sheep was lower (P<0.05) than the E group and this response was associated with a decrease (P<0.05) in LH pulse frequency and amplitude. Dietary protein concentration appeared to have no effect on the IR in FSH cells or on the expression of FSH beta mRNA. In summary, the low protein diet influenced the body weight and weight gain of growing lambs and exerted an inhibitory effect on the synthesis and the release of LH in the pituitary gonadotrophs. No such effect was observed for FSH. It was concluded that the protein concentration of the diet consumed during the growth of female lambs may be an important modulator of processes leading to the pre-pubertal rise in LH.

Influence of rumen protein degradability and supplementation frequency on steers consuming low-quality forage: I. Site of digestion and microbial efficiency

Seven cannulated (rumen and duodenal) Angus x Hereford steers (264 +/- 8 kg BW) consuming low-quality forage (5% CP; 61% NDF; 31% ADF) were used to determine the influence of CP degradability and supplementation frequency (SF) on DMI and nutrient digestion. Treatments included an unsupplemented control and degradable intake protein (DIP) or undegradable intake protein (UIP) provided daily, every 3 d, or every 6 d. The DIP treatments (18% UIP) were calculated to provide 100% of the DIP requirement, while the UIP treatments (60% UIP) were provided on an isonitrogenous basis compared with DIP. Forage DMI was not affected by treatment. Total DM and N intake, duodenal N flow, and intestinal N disappearance increased (P < 0.01) with supplementation. Dry matter intake and duodenal N flow responded quadratically (P < 0.04; greatest values on the every-third-day treatments) as SF decreased. However, no differences in N intake or intestinal N disappearance were observed because of CP degradability or SF. Duodenal bacterial N flow and true bacterial N synthesis (g bacterial N/kg of OM truly digested in the rumen) were increased (P < 0.05) with supplementation. Also, duodenal bacterial N flow was greater (P < 0.05) for DIP compared with UIP. Duodenal nonbacterial N flow was increased (P = 0.02) with CP supplementation and for UIP compared with DIP (P < 0.01). Supplemental CP increased (P < 0.01) total tract DM and N digestibility with no difference due to CP degradability or SF. Results suggest CP supplements consisting of 20 to 60% UIP can be effectively used by steers consuming low-quality forage without adversely affecting DMI, nutrient digestibility, or bacterial CP synthesis, even when provided as infrequently as once every 6 d.

Postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows: a review

Prolonged postpartum acyclicity in suckled beef cows is a source of economic loss to beef cattle producers. Duration of postpartum acyclicity is influenced by suckling status, nutritional status, calving season, age, and several other factors. Although uterine involution begins and ovarian follicular waves resume soon after parturition, dominant follicles of these waves fail to ovulate, due to a failure to undergo terminal maturation. As a result, postpartum anovulatory dominant follicles are smaller than the ovulatory follicles in cyclic cows. Failure of postpartum dominant follicles to undergo terminal maturation is due to absence of appropriate LH pulses, a prerequisite for follicular terminal maturation prior to ovulation. Absence of LH pulses early post partum is primarily due to depletion of anterior pituitary LH stores, although GnRH pulses are also absent during this period due to suckling. Following replenishment of LH stores between Days 15 and 30 post partum, absence of LH pulses is due to continued sensitivity of the hypothalamic GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta, which results in absence of GnRH pulses. This negative feedback effect of estradiol-17beta is modulated by suckling which stimulates release of endogenous opioid peptides from the hypothalamus. As the postpartum interval increases, sensitivity of the GnRH pulse-generator to the negative feedback effect of ovarian estradiol-17beta decreases. This is followed by an increasing frequency of GnRH discharges and LH pulses, terminal follicular maturation, ovulation, and continued cyclicity. The first ovulation post partum is usually followed by a short cycle due to premature luteolysis because of premature release of PGF2alpha from the uterine endometrium, which is possibly intensified by the suckling-induced oxytocin release from the posterior pituitary. A model for the postpartum ovulatory acyclicity and for the resumption of cyclicity is presented.

Post-partum reproductive performance of Sanga cattle in smallholder peri-urban dairy herds in the Accra plains of Ghana

The reproductive performance of 76 Sanga cows was studied from February 1995 to July 1996 in smallholder peri-urban dairy systems in the coastal savanna zone of the Accra plains of Ghana. The interval from calving to resumption of cyclic ovarian activity was 101 +/- 7 days; that from calving to conception was 152 +/- 4 days; gestation length was 292 +/- 16 days; and the calving interval was 444 +/- 16 days. The effects of location, season of calving, parity, body condition score and sex of calf were studied. Calving to cycling interval was significantly shorter in the dry season than in the wet season, and decreased significantly with increasing body condition score. Calving to conception interval was affected only by location. Gestation length was not affected by any of the variables studied. Calving interval was affected by location, season of calving, parity and body condition score. It is concluded that long post-partum anoestrus leads to prolonged calving intervals and poor reproductive performance. Feed supplementation to improve the nutritional status and body condition score of cows and early weaning of calves could be introduced to enhance reproductive performance.

Environmental stress effects on bovine reproduction

Environmental stress is not limited to climatic factors but extends to nutrition, housing, and any stimuli that demand a response from the animal to adapt to new circumstances. Low energy and low or excessive protein levels in the diet are detrimental to reproduction. Likewise, high ambient temperatures and humidity alter the intricate balance of endocrine profiles, leading to lower intensity of estrous behavior, anestrus, embryonic death, and subsequent infertility. Most of these stress factors can be managed with modern technologies to achieve maximum production. Further research in vitamins and minerals under heat stress may add to the knowledge of efficient livestock production.
