Effects of sow-crate design on health and performance of sows and piglets

A cross sectional study of the prevalence, risk factors and population attributable fractions for limb and body lesions in lactating sows on commercial farms in England

BACKGROUND

Lesions on sows' limbs and bodies are an abnormality that might impact on their welfare. The prevalence of and risks for limb and body lesions on lactating sows on commercial English pig farms were investigated using direct observation of the sows and their housing.

RESULTS

The prevalence of lesions on the limbs and body were 93% (260/279) and 20% (57/288) respectively. The prevalence of limb and body lesions was significantly lower in outdoor-housed sows compared with indoor-housed sows. Indoor-housed sows had an increased risk of wounds (OR 6.8), calluses (OR 8.8) and capped hock (OR 3.8) on their limbs when housed on fully slatted floors compared with solid concrete floors. In addition, there was an increased risk of bursitis (OR 2.7), capped hock (OR 2.3) and shoulder lesions (OR 4.8) in sows that were unwilling to rise to their feet. There was a decreased risk of shoulder lesions (OR 0.3) and lesions elsewhere on the body (OR 0.2) in sows with more than 20 cm between their tail and the back of the crate compared with sows with less than 10 cm.

CONCLUSION

The sample of outdoor housed sows in this study had the lowest prevalence of limb and body lesions. In lactating sows housed indoors there was a general trend for an increased risk of limb and body lesions in sows housed on slatted floors compared with those housed on solid concrete floors with bedding. Sows that were less responsive to human presence and sows that had the least space to move within their crates had an additional increased risk of lesions.

Space allowance for dry, pregnant sows in pens: Body condition, skin lesions, and performance1

Different floor space allowances for dry, pregnant sows in pens were evaluated to determine the impacts of space on sow performance, productivity, and body lesions during 2 consecutive farrowings. Treatment groups of 5 sows/pen were assigned to 1.4, 2.3, or 3.3 m(2) of floor space/sow or of 5 sows in individual stalls (1.34 m(2)). The experiment consisted of 6 replications (blocks 1 to 6), and within each block measurements were recorded for 2 consecutive pregnancies and farrowings. A total of 152 sows were measured at 1 farrowing, and 65 of those sows were measured at the successive farrowing (n = 217 records). Performance traits were BCS, BW, backfat (BF), days until rebred, and proportion culled. Litter traits were number of piglets born alive, male:female ratio, and proportions of stillborn, mummified, or dead piglets after birth. Litter performance measures were mean piglet BW and gain and litter BW. Lesion scores were assessed for several body regions. There were treatment and parity effects and interactions for several traits. An interaction of space treatment and parity occurred for sow mean BW, d-110 BW, BF, litter size, and litter and piglet BW and gain, with most effects in parity 2, 3, and 4 sows. Space affected sow mean (P < 0.001) and d-110 BW (P < 0.05) and mean BF and adjusted BF (P < 0.001); sows in pens at </=2.3 m(2) of space had greater (P < 0.05) BW and BF depth, and primiparous sows had less (P < 0.05) BW than greater parity sows. Few differences were found for litter traits, except for litter size, litter weaning BW, and pig BW gain. Sows in pens at 3.3 m(2) had the largest (P < 0.05) litters. Weaning BW was greater (P < 0.05) for litters born to sows that gestated in stalls. Sow BCS and lesion score were affected by floor space (P < 0.001) and parity (P < 0.01); BCS was reduced in sows in pens at 1.4 m(2), and their lesion score was consistently greater (P < 0.05) than that of other space allowances. Primiparous sows often had the least (P < 0.05) lesion scores. For sows in pens, linear and quadratic responses were detected for many of the traits assessed. As floor space increased, BW and BF increased (P < 0.01), but as space decreased, lesion scores increased. Although the effects of gestation system were found and lesion scores often were greater as space decreased, differences in productivity traits were unremarkable with respect to sow welfare or performance compared with industry norms.

Factors associated with suckling piglet average daily gain

Low piglet weight at weaning implies a loss of income for the farmer and might influence the welfare of the affected animals negatively. The objective of our cohort study was to identify risk factors in the farrowing section associated with average daily weight gain (ADG) of piglets from birth to weaning. The study was done in 3 Danish farrow-to-finish herds and included 581 sows, 277 pens, 814 farrowings, and 8241 piglets. The data were analysed with a linear mixed model where the response was ADG, and sow and litter were random effects. Piglet treatments for arthritis (-38 g per day), diarrhoea (-8 g per day) and other infections (-21 g per day) were the major infectious contributors to lower ADG. Forelimb-skin abrasions on a piglet (-5 g per day), weak pasterns of sows on concrete slats (-34 g per day), suckling a sow with poor milking 3 weeks after farrowing (-14 g per day), low birth weight (-8.4 g per day per 100 g), male compared to female (-4 g per day) also were associated with lower ADG in the suckling period.

Preweaning mortality

A number of factors, both infectious and noninfectious, contribute to preweaning mortality in pigs. It is important to establish the causes of preweaning mortality and their distribution in investigating farm problems. The various causes, risk factors, and a step-by-step approach to solving the problem are discussed.

Rationale for using immunopotentiators in domestic food animals

In the production of domestic food animals several situations exist where disease decreases production efficiency. Some of these diseases are exacerbated by a lowered or compromised immune response of the host. If immunomodulators can be used to augment immune function at critical periods during the production of food animals, such as the neonatal period, and prior to or during exposure to stressors or pathogenic organisms, then the economic loss caused by infectious disease should be reduced.
