Effect of forage species and supplement type on rumen kinetics and serum metabolites in growing beef heifers grazing winter forage

Using precision tools to manage and evaluate the effects of mineral and protein/energy supplements fed to grazing beef heifers

Our objectives were to develop a Mobile Cow Command Center (MCCC) capable of precision monitoring of grazing heifers to 1) examine the relationship between supplement intake on concentrations of liver mineral and blood metabolites and 2) examine activity, reproductive, and health behavior. Yearling crossbred Angus heifers (N = 60; initial BW = 400.4 ± 6.2 kg) were fitted with radio frequency identification ear tags that allowed access to electronic feeders (SmartFeed system; C-Lock Inc., Rapid City, SD), and with activity monitoring tags (CowManager B.V., the Netherlands) that monitored reproductive, feeding, and health-associated behaviors. Heifers were assigned randomly to one of three treatments for a 57-day monitoring period: 1) no supplement (CON; N = 20), 2) free choice mineral (MIN; Purina Wind and Rain Storm [Land O'Lakes, Inc.], N = 20), or 3) free choice energy and mineral supplement (NRG; Purina Accuration Range Supplement 33 with added MIN [Land O'Lakes, Inc.], N = 20). Consecutive day body weights, blood, and liver biopsies were collected at pasture turnout and final day of monitoring. By design, mineral intake was greatest in MIN heifers (49 ± 37 g/d) and energy supplement intake was greatest in NRG heifers (1,257 ± 37 g/d). Final BW and ADG were similar among treatments (P > 0.42). Concentrations of glucose on day 57 were greater (P = 0.01) in NRG compared with CON and MIN heifers. Liver concentrations of Se and Fe on day 57 were greater (P < 0.05) in NRG heifers than CON, with MIN being intermediate. Activity tags reported NRG heifers spent less time eating (P < 0.0001) and more time (P < 0.0001) being "highly active" than MIN with CON heifers being intermediate. Data retrieved from activity tags identified 16 of 28 pregnant heifers exhibiting some type of estrus-associated behavior even after confirmation of established pregnancy. The activity monitoring system triggered a total of 146 health alerts from 34 of the 60 heifers monitored, but only 3 heifers of the heifers initiating an electronic health alert needed clinical treatment. However, animal care staff identified nine additional heifers that required treatment for which no electronic health alert was generated. The electronic feeders successfully controlled intake of individual heifers managed in groups pastures; however, the activity monitoring system misrepresented estrus and health events.

Effects of Concentrate Supplementation on Growth Performance, Rumen Fermentation, and Bacterial Community Composition in Grazing Yaks during the Warm Season

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of concentrate supplementation on the growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, rumen fermentation, and bacterial community composition of grazing yaks during the warm season. Eight male yaks (body weight, 123.96 ± 7.43 kg; 3-years) were randomly allocated to two treatments groups: grazing (n = 4, GY) and concentrate supplement group (n = 4, GYS). Concentrate supplementation increased the average daily gain (ADG) (p < 0.05). Glucose (GLU), total protein (TP), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) serum concentrations were significantly higher in the GYS group than in the GY group (p < 0.05). Ammonia-N, MCP: microbial protein, and total volatile fatty acid concentrations were significantly higher in the GYS group than in the GY group (p < 0.01), whereas the pH and acetate: propionate values were significantly decreased (p < 0.01). The relative abundance of Firmicutes in the rumen fluid was significantly higher in the GYS group than in the GY group (p < 0.01). At the genus level, the relative abundances of Succiniclasticum, Prevotellaceae_UCG_003, Prevotellaceae_UCG_005, and Ruminococcus_1 were significantly greater in the GY group than in the GYS group (p < 0.01). In conclusion, concentrate supplementation improved yaks’ growth potential during the warm season, improved ruminal fermentation, and altered core bacteria abundance.

Ruminal degradation kinetics, intake, digestibility, and feeding behavior of beef steers offered annual or perennial grass-hay with or without supplementation

Effects of dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) on ruminal fermentation, degradation kinetics, and feeding behavior of steers offered annual (Eragrostis tef; TEFF) or perennial (Bothriochloa bladhii; OWB) grass hay were evaluated. Ruminally cannulated Angus crossbred steers (n = 6; body weight [BW] = 304 ± 11 kg) were assigned to a 4 × 6 unbalanced Latin square design with four treatments arranged as a 2 × 2 factorial: hay type (OWB or TEFF) and DDGS supplementation (0% or 0.5% BW [dry matter {DM} basis]). Steers had ad libitum access to hay. Periods consisted of a 14-d adaptation followed by 7 d of collection. Residues from the in situ incubations (0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 36, 48, 72, and 96 h post-feeding) were fitted to a first-order kinetics model using the NLIN procedure of SAS. The DDGS decreased (P < 0.01) TEFF DM intake (DMI) by 11.3%, while not affecting DMI of OWB. The greatest DMI was observed for steers supplemented with DDGS, regardless of forage, and least in steers consuming OWB without DDGS (hay type × DDGS; P = 0.03). Non-supplemented steers spent more (P < 0.01) time eating hay. Digestibility of DM tended (P = 0.06) to increase with DDGS supplementation. A hay type × DDGS interaction was observed (P ≤ 0.05) on ruminal effective degradable fractions. The rate of degradation, soluble fraction, and the potentially degradable fraction of organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased (P ≤ 0.05), while the undegradable fraction of all components decreased (P ≤ 0.01) when steers were offered TEFF compared to OWB. Ruminal DM, OM, and ADF degradation lag-time increased (P ≤ 0.02) in steers offered OWB. Ruminal degradation kinetics were not (P ≥ 0.17) independently affected by DDGS supplementation. Average ruminal pH of steers offered TEFF (P < 0.01) and those offered DDGS (P < 0.01) were lower than OWB and non-supplemented steers. Total concentration of VFA tended (P = 0.09) to increase when DDGS was provided with OWB, while decreasing when TEFF was offered. The acetate:propionate increased (P < 0.01) with DDGS supplementation due to a decrease (P = 0.03) in propionate. Ruminal NH3-N was greater (P = 0.03) in steers offered TEFF compared to OWB, and those supplemented with DDGS (P = 0.03). An annual, in place of a conventional, perennial hay improved intake and digestion of nutrients, without affecting feeding behavior. The supplementation with DDGS appears to affect forage intake, ruminal degradation, and feeding behavior, although not independent of forage quality.

Winter grazing of stockpiled native forages during heifer development delays body weight gain without influencing final pregnancy rates

The objective of this study was to test the effects of protein supplementation strategy and different stockpiled forage species on growth, nutritional status, and reproductive performance of yearling beef heifers. In a 5-yr study, yearling beef heifers (n = 266) were stratified by body weight (BW) at weaning to 1 of 3 stockpiled forages: 1) endophyte-infected tall fescue (TF, Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort; 7.21% crude protein [CP] and 67.13% neutral detergent fiber [NDF], dry matter [DM] basis), 2) big bluestem (Andropogon gerardi Vitman) and indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans L.) combination (BI; 4.32% CP and 71.06% NDF, DM basis), or 3) switchgrass (SG,Panicum virgatum L.; 3.87% CP and 76.79% NDF, DM basis). Forage treatments were then randomly assigned to receive 1 of 2 supplement types: 1) 0.68 kg heifer-1 d-1 of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS: 28% CP and 108% total digestible nutrients [TDN]) or 2) 0.22 kg heifer-1 d-1 of blood meal and fish meal (BF: 72.5% CP and 77.5% TDN), resulting in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Each year, twenty-one 1.2-ha pastures (7 pastures per forage type) were utilized with 2 to 3 heifers per pastures. Treatments were initiated in January and terminated in April at the initiation of breeding. Initial BW was not different (P ≥ 0.22) by forage or supplement type. During the rest of the grazing period, BW was greater (P < 0.01) for TF heifers. However, average daily gain (ADG) was greater (P < 0.01) for BI and SG heifers from breeding to final pregnancy diagnosis. Heifers grazing TF pastures had greater (P < 0.01) overall ADG than their counterparts. The percentage of mature BW (MBW) at breeding was greater (P < 0.01) for TF heifers. Heifer BW and ADG was not influenced (P ≥ 0.06) by supplementation strategy. Serum glucose concentrations were not different (P ≥ 0.44) among forage type or supplement strategy. Pregnancy rates at fixed timed-artificial insemination and overall pregnancy rates did not differ (P ≥ 0.38) by forage or supplement treatment. Owing to forage nutritive value differences, heifers grazing low-quality, warm season grasses lost BW prior to the initiation of the breeding season. However, a negative BW gain prior to breeding did not negatively impact overall pregnancy rates.
