Collate the literature on toxicity data on mercury in experimental animals and humans (Part I – Data on organic mercury)

Heavy Metals Content in Selected Medicinal Plants Produced and Consumed in Serbia and Their Daily Intake in Herbal Infusions

The heavy metals content (HMs) was investigated in 14 different medicinal plants collected from the three regions in Central Serbia, Zlatar, Sokobanja, and Kopaonik. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, Ni, Hg and Pb were determined: Cd (<0.03-2.72 mg/kg); Cr (<0.08-12.1 mg/kg); Ni (<0.08-12.2 mg/kg); Pb (0.6-49.0 mg/kg); the Hg concentration was below the detection limit of 0.06 mg/kg in all samples. The daily intake of HMs due to ingestion of 200 mL of herbal infusion was in all cases below the recommended limit prescribed by the World Health Organization. The estimated daily intake values were below the values for the oral reference dose regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USA EPA). The target hazard quotient and hazard index for Cd, Cr Ni, and Pb were below 1. Nevertheless, due to the tendency of heavy metals to accumulate in the organism, attention should be paid to the daily intake of herbal infusion during long-term usage. Specifically, it is recommended to consume not more than one cup (200 mL) of infusion per day made from thyme (Mt. Zlatar) and blueberry (Mt. Kopaonik), and not more than two cups per day for other herbs.

Comparative study on toxicity of methylmercury chloride and methylmercury hydroxide to the human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y

Toxicities of methylmercury chloride (CH₃HgCl) and methylmercury hydroxide (CH₃HgOH) to cultured neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y in vitro are evaluated. This is the comparative study between two methylmercury compounds to find out the extent of toxicity of these compounds are toxic to SH-SY5Y cell line. Both cytotoxicity and genotoxicity experiments were carried out to find out the more toxic compound. For cytotoxicity study, four staining assay methods independently with trypan blue (TB), acridine orange/ethidium bromide (AO/EB), 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT), and neutral red (NR) were used and the comet assay method was done for genotoxicity study. The obtained toxicity data were used for probit analysis. In cytotoxicity, CH₃HgCl had minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value in each assay method as 3 mg/L invariably; LC₂₅ values were in the range 7.41 to 10.23 mg/L, and LC₅₀ values were 14.79 to 15.48 mg/L; while LC₇₅ values were 20.89 to 26.91 mg/L. Moreover, LC₁₀₀ value was 30 mg/L, known from comet assay experiments for CH₃HgCl. Similarly for CH₃HgOH, the MIC value in each assay method was invariably 3 mg/L, the LC₂₅ values were in the range 12.58 to 16.59 mg/L, and LC₅₀ values were 19.49 to 23.44 mg/L; LC₇₅ values were 27.54 to 30.90 mg/L and LC₁₀₀ value was 42 mg/L in each assay done for cytotoxicity and genotoxicity studies. Computed DNA fragmentation indices in comet assays were 98.6 ± 0.57 30 mg/L with CH₃HgCl and 76 ± 5.29 30 mg/L with CH₃HgOH. This study clearly indicated that methylmercury chloride is more toxic than methylmercury hydroxide to SH-SY5Y cell line. Toxicity of Hg had been quantified with in vitro cultured human neuroblastoma cell line; since it has neurotoxic effects, its neural evaluation has implications in environmental health issues.

Styrofoam debris as a potential carrier of mercury within ecosystems

The present paper falls within the trend of research into interactions between various pollutants emitted anthropogenically into the environment and focuses on mercury and styrofoam debris. The study covers part of the Southern Baltic's drainage area. Apart from styrofoam and beach sand, the research involved mosses, which are bioindicators of atmospheric metal pollution. The research has shown that mercury present in the environment becomes associated with styrofoam debris. The median for mercury concentrations in virgin styrofoam samples (0.23 ng g(-1) dry weight (d.w.)) and in beach sand samples (0.69 ng g(-1) d.w.) was an order of magnitude lower than in the styrofoam debris (5.20 ng g(-1) d.w.). The highest mercury content observed in styrofoam debris (3,863 ng g(-1) d.w.) exceeded the standards for bottom sediment and soil. The binding of mercury to styrofoam debris takes place in water, and presumably also through contact with the ground. A significant role in this process was played by biotic factors, such as the presence of biofilm and abiotic ones, such as solar radiation and the transformations of mercury forms related to it. As a result, mercury content in styrofoam debris underwent seasonal changes, peaking in summertime. Furthermore, the regional changes of mercury content in the studied debris seem to reflect the pollution levels of the environment.
