Abstract
As the most important phenolic biopolymer in nature, lignin shows promising application potentialities in various bioactivities in vivo and in vitro, mainly including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypolipidemic, and antidiabetic control. In this work, several carbon-based solid acids were synthesized to catalyze the fragmentation of organosolv lignin (OL). The generated lignin fragments, with controllable molecular weight and functional groups, were further evaluated for their application in the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The results suggested that the urea-doped catalyst (SUPC) showed a more excellent catalytic performance in producing diethyl ether insoluble lignin (DEIL) and diethyl ether soluble lignin (DESL). In addition, the lignin fragments have a good therapeutic effect on the cell model of T2DM. Compared with the insulin resistance model, DEIL obtained by catalytic depolymerization of OL with SUPC could improve the glucose consumption of insulin-resistant cells. Moreover, low-concentration samples (50 μg/mL) can promote glucose consumption (19.7 mM) more than the traditional drug rosiglitazone (17.5 mM). This work demonstrates the prospect of depolymerized lignin for the prevention and treatment of T2DM and provides a new application field for lignin degradation products.

Abstract
Brown rice noodles are increasingly favored by consumers for their health benefits; however, their development is hindered by their poor edible qualities. The effect of germination on the cooking, textural, organoleptic and nutritional qualities of brown rice pasta was investigated. In comparison to ungerminated brown rice noodles, germination resulted in a shorter cooking time, reduced cooking losses, and decreased hardness and adhesion of noodles as well as reduced bitter taste. These changes can be attributed to germination altering the basic composition of brown rice. Meanwhile, the contents of γ-aminobutyric acid, free phenolic acid, and bound phenolic acid increased by 53.43%, 21.71%, and 7.14%, respectively, while the content of resistant starch de-creased by 21.55%. Sprouting is a promising strategy for improving the edible quality and nutritional properties of brown rice noodles.

Abstract
Objectives In this study, the effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-rich sprouted adzuki beans on the glycolipid metabolism and gastrointestinal health were investigated in mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods Mice with T2DM were subjected to dietary intervention with different doses of GABA-rich sprouted adzuki beans for 6 consecutive weeks, during which growth indicators, glycolipid metabolism, and the composition and diversity of the gut microbiota changes were observed. Results A high dietary intake of GABA-rich sprouted adzuki beans had a preventive effect against weight gain, significantly reduced serum levels of FBG, TG, and TC. Additionally, high dietary intake of GABA-rich sprouted adzuki beans increased the abundances of Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Verrucomicrobia, and Akkermansia, leading to a shift in the structure of the gut microbiota toward the dominance of probiotics with regulatory effects on glycolipid metabolism. Conclusions GABA-rich sprouted adzuki beans can effectively control the bodyweight of mice with T2DM, maintain a balanced blood glucose level, improve glycolipid metabolism and the changes in the microbiota may mediate the anti-diabetic effect of sprouted adzuki beans.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases, and exploring strategies to prevent and treat diabetes has become extremely important. In recent decades the search for new therapeutic strategies for T2DM involving dietary interventions has attracted public attention. We established a diabetic mouse model by feeding mice a high-fat diet combined with injection of low-dose streptozotocin, intending to elucidate the effects and possible mechanisms of different dosages of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-rich germinated adzuki beans on the treatment of diabetes in mice. The mice were treated for 6 weeks either with increasing doses of GABA-enriched germinated adzuki beans, with non-germinated adzuki beans, with GABA, or with the positive control drug metformin. Then, the blood glucose levels and blood lipid biochemical indicators of all the mice were measured. At the same time, serum differential metabolite interactions were explored by UPLC-Q/TOF-MS-based serum metabolomic analysis. The results showed that body weight and fasting blood glucose levels were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). We also report improved levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, urea, and serum creatinine. We observed a significant improvement in the homeostasis model assessment of the beta cell function and insulin resistance (HOMA-β and HOMA-IR) scores (P < 0.05) in the group of mice treated with the highest dose of GABA-enriched germinated adzuki beans. In addition, the metabolic profiles of the serum were analyzed, and 31 differential metabolites including amino acids and lipids were obtained. According to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis, this was found to be correlated with nine significantly enriched metabolic pathways involving the up-regulation of levels of L-serine, SM (d18:1/22:1(13Z)), L-histidine, creatine, and 3-indoleacetic acid. Our data suggest that the hypoglycemic effect of GABA-enriched germinated adzuki beans on diabetic mice may be related to improving tryptophan metabolism, glycerol phospholipid metabolism, sphingosline metabolism, and the glycine, serine, and threonine metabolic pathways. This study provides a reference for the application of GABA-enriched germinated foods in type 2 diabetes and could provide a cue for searching biomarkers to be adopted for T2DM diagnosis.

Abstract

The tendency to use herbal and complementary therapies has been increased dramatically in last decades. The aim of this study is reviewing nephrotonic and nephroprotective medicinal herbs in traditional Persian Medicine (TPM) historical books, and assessment of relevant scientific evidence and possible mechanisms of action. In this study, seven major references among pharmaceutical books of PM from the 11th to 19th centuries were selected and were searched with key words equivalent to “nephroprotection”. To find new studies, the scientific name of medicinal herbs which were repeated twice or more were searched using data bases including PubMed, and Google scholar with keywords of nephroprotective, renal disorder, renal failure and kidney. Also, probable effective mechanisms were explored with key words including oxidative stress, antioxidant, inflammation, anti-inflammatory and angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor. 210 herbal remedies were found with kidney strengthening, nephroprotective, and atrophy prevention effects in reviewed books. The most repeated herbs were 41 Results of scientific evidence showed that the possible functional mechanisms of these plants include anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, blood pressure/glucose-lowering effect as well as improvement of glomerular filtration, prevention of tissue damage, and enhancing the reconstructive power of cells. The list of medicinal herbs in this study can be used as a base of future studies on production of new medicines for prevention or treatment of renal failure and for the enhancement of renal performance.
