The impacts of reduced connectivity on multiple facets of aquatic insect diversity in floodplain wetlands, Northeast China

River-floodplain ecosystems are highly complex and dynamic systems that are subjected to human disturbance, such as the construction of levees. Aquatic insects are among the most widely used indicators to assess human impacts on floodplain wetlands. Most studies are still based on taxonomic biodiversity. However, trait-based approaches remain limited, which could impede the development of effective management strategies. Here, we investigated aquatic insect assemblages in eleven pairs of wetlands along the Wusuli River in two seasons (Spring and Autumn) and assessed their responses to the impact of levee construction, considering taxonomic and functional diversity. We found that pooled species richness (73 taxa) in river-connected wetlands was almost twice of that in levee-blocked wetlands (37 taxa). Six and one indicator taxa for river-connected wetlands were identified in May and October, respectively, while no indicator taxon for the levee-blocked wetlands was identified. Moreover, taxonomic and functional alpha diversity in river-connected wetlands was much higher than in levee-blocked wetlands, but beta diversity showed a contrasting pattern. Additionally, multivariate dispersion analysis indicated a more evident difference in beta diversity between river-connected and levee-blocked wetlands in May than in October, likely due to the temporary lateral connection in summer (i.e., water flowed over levees during flood events). Our results revealed that anthropogenic impacts (e.g., levee construction and agricultural activity) weakened the connectivity of floodplain wetland ecosystems, leading to decreased taxonomic and functional diversity of aquatic insects in isolated wetlands. Our study highlights the importance of combining taxonomic and trait-based approaches in biomonitoring programs of floodplain wetland ecosystems. It also underscores the necessity of restoring habitat connectivity of wetland ecosystems (e.g., river-floodplain connectivity and connections between different wetlands) to facilitate biodiversity recovery and enhance ecological functions and services supported by these valuable ecosystems.

The Beautiful and the Dammed: Defining Multi-Stressor Disturbance Regimes in an Atlantic River Floodplain Wetland

Natural hydrological fluctuations within river floodplains generate habitat diversity through variable connections between habitat patches and the main river channel. Human modification of floodplains can alter the magnitude and frequency of large floods and associated sediment movement by interrupting these floodplain connections. The lower Wolastoq | Saint John River and its associated floodplain wetlands are experiencing anthropogenic disturbances arising from climate change, increased urbanization in the watershed, changing upstream agricultural landscape practices, and, most notably, major road and dam construction. By comparing digitized aerial images, we identified key periods of change in wetland extent throughout an ecologically significant component of the floodplain, the Grand Lake Meadows and Portobello Creek wetland complex, with significant erosion evident in coves and backwater areas across the landscape following dam construction and significant accretion around the Jemseg River following highway construction. Connectivity and hydrological regime also influenced other habitat components, namely nutrients and metals retention, as well as the composition of the local macrophyte community. These findings address two key aspects of floodplain management: (1) understanding how hydrological alteration has historically influenced floodplain wetlands can inform us of how the ecosystem may respond under future conditions, such as climate change, and (2) the mechanisms by which habitat diversity and disturbance regimes filter biological communities, with the potential for patches to host a rich biodiversity continuously supporting critical ecosystem functions.

Hydrological and soil physiochemical variables determine the rhizospheric microbiota in subtropical lakeshore areas

Background

Due to intensive sluice construction and other human disturbances, lakeshore vegetation has been destroyed and ecosystems greatly changed. Rhizospheric microbiota constitute a key part of a functioning rhizosphere ecosystem. Maintaining rhizosphere microbial diversity is a central, critical issue for sustaining these rhizospheric microbiota functions and associated ecosystem services. However, the community composition and abiotic factors influencing rhizospheric microbiota in lakeshore remain largely understudied.

Methods

The spatiotemporal composition of lakeshore rhizospheric microbiota and the factors shaping them were seasonally investigated in three subtropical floodplain lakes (Lake Chaohu, Lake Wuchang, and Lake Dahuchi) along the Yangtze River in China through 16S rRNA amplicon high-throughput sequencing.

Results

Our results showed that four archaeal and 21 bacterial phyla (97.04 ± 0.25% of total sequences) dominated the rhizospheric microbiota communities of three lakeshore areas. Moreover, we uncovered significant differences among rhizospheric microbiota among the lakes, seasons, and average submerged depths. The Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Bathyarchaeota, Gemmatimonadetes, and Proteobacteria differed significantly among the three lakes, with more than half of these dominant phyla showing significant changes in abundance between seasons, while the DHVEG-6, Ignavibacteriae, Nitrospirae, Spirochaetes, and Zixibacteria varied considerably across the average submerged depths (n = 58 sites in total). Canonical correspondence analyses revealed that the fluctuation range of water level and pH were the most important factors influencing the microbial communities and their dominant microbiota, followed by total nitrogen, moisture, and total phosphorus in soil. These results suggest a suite of hydrological and soil physiochemical variables together governed the differential structuring of rhizospheric microbiota composition among different lakes, seasons, and sampling sites. This work thus provides valuable ecological information to better manage rhizospheric microbiota and protect the vegetation of subtropical lakeshore areas.
