Abstract
Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) is the principal vector of dengue and other viruses that cause disease among 100 to 400 million people each year. The recent development of widespread insecticidal resistance has led to the rapid development of biological control solutions aimed at larval control. While the efficacy of Metarhizium brunneum has been shown against Aedes larvae, the impact of larval population dynamics will need to be determined to formulate effective control strategies. In this study, larvae were subjected to four concentrations of M. brunneum (105, 106, 107, 108 conidia ml-1). Larvae were found to be susceptible to M. brunneum with dose-dependent efficacy. When constant larval immigration was added as a parameter, peak mortality was consistently found to occur on the fourth day, before a significant reduction in control efficacy linked to a decline in conidial availability within the water column. This suggests that M. brunneum treatments should be applied at a concentration 1 × 107 conidia ml-1 every four days to effectively control mosquito larvae in the field, regardless of the fungal formulation, water volume, or larval density. Understanding fungal-mosquito dynamics is critical in developing appropriate control programs as it helps optimize the fungal control agent's dose and frequency of application.

Abstract
The entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium humberi affects Aedes aegypti adults, larvae and eggs, but its ovicidal activity is not yet well documented. Conidia of this fungus adhered to the chorion, initiated germination within 12 h, and germinating conidia were detected for up to 10 d after contact with the egg. Germ tubes either penetrated the chorion directly or formed appressoria at the end of a short hypha (<5 μm) or, subsequently, on longer, branched hyphae. Thin layers of what was most probably a fungal mucilaginous excretion were detected on the chorion adjacent to germ tubes, appressoria and hyphae. After 5 d eggs frequently appeared shriveled with ruptures in the chorion, and with the interior filled with hyphae that eventually produced mycelium and new conidia on the egg surfaces. Findings demonstrated that this fungus can infect A. aegypti eggs and subsequently recycle on their surface by producing large numbers of new conidia that should be infective for further generations of eggs, larvae and adults.

Abstract
Mosquitoes are considered one of the most important threats worldwide due to their ability to vector pathogens. They are responsible for the transmission of major pathogens such as malaria, dengue, zika, or chikungunya. Due to the lack of treatments or prophylaxis against many of the transmitted pathogens and an increasing prevalence of mosquito resistance to insecticides and drugs available, alternative strategies are now being explored. Some of these involve the use of microorganisms as promising agent to limit the fitness of mosquitoes, attract or repel them, and decrease the replication and transmission of pathogenic agents. In recent years, the importance of microorganisms colonizing the habitat of mosquitoes has particularly been investigated since they appeared to play major roles in their development and diseases transmission. In this issue, we will synthesize researches investigating how microorganisms present within water habitats may influence breeding site selection and oviposition strategies of gravid mosquito females. We will also highlight the impact of such microbes on the fate of females' progeny during their immature stages with a specific focus on egg hatching, development rate, and larvae or pupae survival.

Abstract
AIMS To survey and to characterize entomopathogenic fungi as natural enemies of mosquitoes in Central Brazil. METHODS AND RESULTS Tolypocladium cylindrosporum (Hypocreales, Ophiocordycipitaceae) was isolated for the first time in South America by using Aedes aegypti (Diptera, Culicidae) as sentinel larvae in a stagnant mosquito breeding site in a secondary tropical forest. Two isolates were morphologically and molecularly identified, and their activity tested against A. aegypti eggs, larvae and adults. CONCLUSIONS Findings emphasize the importance of T. cylindrosporum as a natural fungal antagonist of mosquitoes. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Both isolates affected larvae and adults but were less effective against eggs; both have potential for development as a mycoinsecticide especially against larvae of A. aegypti the main vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika and urban yellow fever.
