Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of Health Anxiety Questionnaire

Development and psychometric testing of a competency of nursing process questionnaire

Objectives

This study aimed to develop and evaluate a competency of nursing process questionnaire (CNPQ) for registered nurses in Cambodia.

Methods

Guided by the nursing process, an initial questionnaire was generated through focus group discussion, literature review, and the expert consultation. Finally, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were validated through a questionnaire survey online of 260 registered nurses selected from Complimentary Package Activities 1, 2, 3, and national hospitals from January to February 2022 in five geographic areas of Cambodia.

Results

The content validity index was 1.00. The Cronbach's α coefficient for the whole questionnaire was 0.963, and the range for the five dimensions was 0.963-0.964, which shows that the questions were consistent. The test-retest reliability was 0.769. The exploratory factor analysis led to a list of 24 items that were grouped into five dimensions: assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 70.08%.

Conclusions

The CNPQ developed in this study showed good reliability and validity and can be used to assess the competency of registered nurses by themselves and help nursing managers to develop the relevant policies.

Development and validation of the Nurse's Workplace Mental Health Questionnaire

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to develop and validate the Nurse's Workplace Mental Health Questionnaire (NWMHQ).

METHODS

The questionnaire was developed based on the two continua model of mental illness and health proposed by Keyes. The initial questionnaire was generated through literature review, two rounds of Delphi expert consultation, followed by a pilot survey. Finally, the reliability and validity of the questionnaire were validated through an online survey of 2,815 registered nurses selected from the public hospitals in 11 provinces from June to July 2020.

RESULTS

The item-content validity index (I-CVI) of the questionnaire ranged from 0.750 to 1.000 and the average scale-level content validity index (S-CVI/Ave) was 0.906. Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.948 and test-retest reliability was 0.850. The self-rating depression scale score was negatively related to the NWMHQ score (r = -0.664, P < 0.01). The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) yielded six factors (emotional status, psychological security, positive relationship, resilience, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being), consisting of 32 items. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 65.58%. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed an acceptable fit.

CONCLUSION

The NWMHQ developed in this study showed good reliability and validity. This questionnaire may help assess the mental health status of nurses and help nursing managers to develop appropriate targeted psychological interventions.

Reliability and Validity of the Korean Version of Somatic Symptom Scale-8

OBJECTIVE

Somatic symptoms in psychiatry include underlying depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric disorders. This study aimed to conduct a validation study of a Korean version of the Somatic Symptom Scale-8 (K-SSS-8), and to utilize the K-SSS-8 effectively in clinical settings.

METHODS

For reliabilty, test-retest reliability and internal consistency were analyzed. For construct validity, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted. Known-group validity was verified, Jonckheere-Terpstra test (J-T statistic) were used.

RESULTS

Maternal Cronbach's alpha was 0.85 and r value of test-retest reliability was 0.777. In the EFA, 2-, 3- and 4-factor model showed cumulative percentile for variance of 60% or more. In the CFA, the 3-factor model was found to be the most appropriated and simplest (χ2=10.992, df=17, CFI=1.000, TLI=1.022, RMSEA=0.000). The verifying the difference in K-SSS-8 also showed significant difference. (J-T statistic=-2.510, p<0.05).

CONCLUSION

K-SSS-8 can be useful for exploring symptoms such as panic symptoms, physical pain, and physiological symptoms experienced by patients in a short time. In addition, the K-SSS-8 is expected to be very useful for determining the current severity by using the severity categories and for establish additionally required assessment plans for depression and anxiety symptoms.

Sinhala translation of the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale: a valid and reliable tool to detect anxiety disorders among antenatal women

BACKGROUND

Anxiety disorders during pregnancy are not routinely assessed in Sri Lanka despite being common and being associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. Screening can facilitate early detection and management of anxiety and improve pregnancy outcomes. Our aim was to determine the validity of the Sinhala translation of the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS) to detect anxiety among Sri Lankan pregnant women.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in antenatal clinics of a teaching hospital in Colombo District. The PASS was translated to Sinhala using the standard translation/ back-translation method. Pregnant women (n = 221) were sequentially recruited and assessed by a psychiatrist until 81 women with anxiety disorder were diagnosed using the International Classification of Diseases-10 criteria (gold standard). The Sinhala translation of the PASS (PASS-S) was administered to all recruited women, including 140 women without anxiety. Receiver-Operating- Characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed, the optimal cut-off score for PASS-S was determined, and its validity was assessed using sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and positive and negative likelihood ratios. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha. Test-retest and inter-rater reliability for PASS-S score and anxiety classification were assessed using intra class correlation coefficient (ICC) and Cohen's kappa (k), respectively.

RESULTS

The mean age (±SD) of women was 30(±5.8) years, and 53.7% were multiparous. A psychiatrist diagnosed anxiety disorder was made in 37.0% of women, while the PASS-S, at its optimal cut-off of ≥20, classified 37.5% of women as having anxiety disorders. The area under the ROC curve for the PASS-S was 0.96 (95%CI 0.94-0.99). Sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values of the PASS-S were 0.93 (95% CI 0.84-0.97), 0.90 (95% CI 0.83-0.94), 0.85 (95% CI 0.75-0.90) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.89-0.98), respectively. Positive and negative likelihood ratios were 8.8 (95% CI 5.3-14.5) and 0.08 (95%CI 0.04-0.18), respectively, and the internal consistency was high (Cronbach's alpha 0.95). Four-factor structures obtained by exploratory factor analysis were "acute anxiety and adjustment", "social anxiety, specific fears and trauma", "perfectionism and control" and "general anxiety".Test-retest reliability was high for the PASS-S score (ICC 0.85[95% CI 0.65-0.96]) and anxiety classification (k 0.77[95% CI 0.34-1.2]). Inter-interviewer reliability was also high (ICC 0.92[95% CI 0.81-0.97] for the PASS-S score and (k0.86 [95% CI 0.59-1.1] for anxiety classification).

CONCLUSION

The Sinhala translation of the PASS is a valid and reliable instrument to screen for anxiety disorders among antenatal women in Sri Lanka.
