One-Pot Preparation of Imidazole-Ring-Modified Graphitic Carbon Nitride Nanozymes for Colorimetric Glucose Detection

Nanozymes are highly desired to overcome the shortcomings of natural enzymes, such as low stability, high cost and difficult storage during biosensing applications. Herein, by imitating the structure of natural enzymes, we propose a one-pot annealing process to synthesis imidazole-ring-modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄-Im) with enhanced peroxidase-like activity. g-C₃N₄-Im shows enhanced peroxidase-like activity by 46.5 times compared to unmodified g-C₃N₄. Furthermore, imidazole rings of g-C₃N₄-Im make it possible to anchor Cu(II) active sites on it to produce g-C₃N₄-Im-Cu, which shows a further increase in peroxidase-like activity by three times. It should be noted that the as-prepared g-C₃N₄-Im-Cu could show obvious peroxidase-like activity over a broad range of pH values and at a low temperature (5 °C). The ultrahigh peroxidase-like activity is attributed to the electronic effect of imidazole rings and the active sites of Cu(II) for ·OH production. Based on the enhanced peroxidase-like activity, a H₂O₂ and glucose biosensor was developed with a high sensitivity (limit of detection, 10 nM) and selectivity. Therefore, the biosensor shows potential for applications in diabetic diagnoses in clinical practice.

Synthesis and characterization of amine-functionalized Fe3O4/Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (MSNs) as potential nanocarriers in drug delivery systems

Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles (SPIONs) have shown great potential for being utilized in Nanocarriers (NCs) applications throughout the Drug Delivery System (DDS). However, there are several obstacles to make a practical magnetic NCs, such as low dispersity and high toxicity in the biological systems, and also low surface area for drug loading. In this work, magnetic NCs have been synthesized through a facile three-step process, first SPIONs were synthesized by the co-precipitation method, then decorated via mesoporous silica and finally the calcinated NCs functionalized with NH2 by a simple process in the ethanol solvent. The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized NCs have been characterized by the usage of different analyzing methods such as XRD, FTIR, TEM, FE-SEM, and TGA. Also, the magnetic properties have been investigated by the means of VSM throughout each step of the procedure. Lastly, we have applied the technique of N₂ adsorption-desorption to observe the surface area, pore size, and volume. Besides optimal magnetization of final nanoparticles (30 emu/gr), the as-synthesized NCs claimed the high surface area and small diameter, at 371 m².g^-1 and 70 nm, respectively. Moreover, the functionalized NCs have demonstrated well dispersity over a day in the PBS solution. As a result, the as-prepared nanocarrier able to overcome drug delivery obstacles and used as a potential nanocarrier owing to its small diameter, high surface area/ pore volume, optimal magnetization, and well dispersity in the biological condition.

Role of Surfaces in the Magnetic and Ozone Gas-Sensing Properties of ZnFe2O4 Nanoparticles: Theoretical and Experimental Insights

The magnetic properties and ozone (O₃) gas-sensing activity of zinc ferrite (ZnFe₂O₄) nanoparticles (NPs) were discussed by the combination of the results acquired by experimental procedures and density functional theory simulations. The ZnFe₂O₄ NPs were synthesized via the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method by varying the reaction time in order to obtain ZnFe₂O₄ NPs with different exposed surfaces and evaluate the influence on its properties. Regardless of the reaction time employed in the synthesis, the zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization measurements showed superparamagnetic ZnFe₂O₄ NPs with an average blocking temperature of 12 K. The (100), (110), (111), and (311) surfaces were computationally modeled, displaying the different undercoordinated surfaces. The good sensing activity of ZnFe₂O₄ NPs was discussed in relation to the presence of the (110) surface, which exhibited low (-0.69 eV) adsorption enthalpy, promoting reversibility and preventing the saturation of the sensor surface. Finally, the O₃ gas-sensing mechanism could be explained based on the conduction changes of the ZnFe₂O₄ surface and the increase in the height of the electron-depletion layer upon exposure toward the target gas. The results obtained allowed us to propose a mechanism for understanding the relationship between the morphological changes and the magnetic and O₃ gas-sensing properties of ZnFe₂O₄ NPs.

Preparation of porphyrin modified CO9S8 nanocomposites and application for colorimetric biosensing of H2O2

Hydrogen peroxide detection has been widely applied in the fields of biology, medicine, and chemistry. Colorimetric detection of hydrogen peroxide has proven to be a fast and convenient method. In this work, 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl) porphyrin modified Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] nanocomposites (H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] were prepared via a facile one-step hydrothermal method. H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] nanocomposites were demonstrated to possess an enhanced mimetic peroxidase activity toward the substrate, 3,3[Formula: see text],5,5[Formula: see text]-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which can be oxidized to oxTMB (oxidized TMB) in a buffer solution of hydrogen peroxide with a color change from colorless to blue. The catalytic activity of H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] was further analyzed by steady-state kinetics, and H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] had high affinity towards both TMB and H[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, fluorescence and ESR data revealed that the catalytic mechanism of the peroxidase activity of H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] is due to hydroxyl radicals generated from decomposition of H[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text]. Based on the catalytic activity of H[Formula: see text]TClPP-Co[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text], a sensitive colorimetric sensor of H[Formula: see text]O[Formula: see text] with a detection limit of 6.803 [Formula: see text]M as well as a range of 7–100 [Formula: see text]M was designed.

A stimuli-responsive supramolecular assembly between inverted cucurbit[7]uril and hemicyanine dye

The effect of inverted curcurbit[7]uril (iQ[7]) on the binding mode of 2-(4-(dimethylamino)styryl)-1-methylpyridinium (DASPMI) was determined in this study.
