Abstract
OBJECTIVE Familial isolated hypoparathyroidism is a rare genetic disorder due to no or low production of the parathyroid hormone, disturbing calcium and phosphate regulation. The resulting hypocalcemia may lead to dental abnormalities, such as enamel hypoplasia. The aim of this paper was to describe the full-mouth rehabilitation of a 15-year-old girl with chronic hypocalcemia due to a rare congenital hypoparathyroidism. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS In this patient, in the young adult dentition, conservative care was preferred. Onlays or stainless-steel crowns were performed on the posterior teeth, and direct or indirect (overlays and veneerlays) were performed on the maxillary premolars, canines, and incisors, using a digital wax-up. The mandibular incisors were bleached. The treatment clearly improved the patient's oral quality of life, with fewer sensitivities, better chewing, and aesthetic satisfaction. The difficulties were the regular monitoring and the limited compliance of the patient. CONCLUSION Despite no clinical feedback in the literature, generalized hypomineralized/hypoplastic teeth due to hypoparathyroidism in a young patient can be treated as amelogenesis imperfecta (generalized enamel defects) with a conservative approach for medium-term satisfactory results. HIGHLIGHTS This study provides new insights into the management of enamel hypoplasia caused by familial isolated hypoparathyroidism, helping to improve patient outcomes in similar cases.

Abstract
Importance Exposure to maternal psychosocial stressors during the prenatal and perinatal periods can have major long-term mental health consequences for children. However, valid and inexpensive biomarkers are currently unavailable to identify children who have been exposed to psychosocial stress and the buffers of stress exposure. Objective To assess whether a growth mark in tooth enamel, the neonatal line, is associated with exposure to prenatal and perinatal maternal psychosocial factors. Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective cohort study used exfoliated primary canine teeth and epidemiological survey data from 70 children enrolled in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a birth cohort based in Bristol, England. Exfoliated teeth were collected from children at 5 to 7 years of age. Data were collected from January 1, 1991, to December 31, 1998, and were analyzed from January 1, 2019, to August 10, 2021. Exposures Four types of prenatal and perinatal maternal psychosocial factors were studied: stressful life events, psychopathological history, neighborhood disadvantage, and social support. Data were collected from mailed-in questionnaires completed during and shortly after pregnancy. Main Outcomes and Measures Neonatal line width measured within 3 portions of the tooth crown (the cuspal, middle, and innermost third) in exfoliated primary canines. Results A total of 70 children (34 of 70 [48.7%] male; 63 of 67 [94.0%] White) were studied. Most children were born full term (57 [83.8%]) and to mothers of typical child-bearing age (60 [88.2%]). Neonatal lines were wider in the canines of children born to mothers who self-reported severe lifetime depression (β = 3.35; 95% CI, 1.48-5.23; P = .001), any lifetime psychiatric problems (β = 2.66; 95% CI, 0.92-4.41; P = .003), or elevated anxiety or depressive symptoms at 32 weeks' gestation (β = 2.29; 95% CI, 0.38-4.20; P = .02). By contrast, neonatal lines were narrower in children born to mothers who self-reported high social support shortly after birth (β = -2.04; 95% CI, -3.70 to -0.38; P = .02). The magnitude of these associations was large, up to 1.2 SD unit differences, and persisted after adjusting for other risk factors. Conclusions and Relevance In this cohort study, neonatal line width was associated with exposure to maternal perinatal psychosocial factors. Replication and validation of these findings can further evaluate teeth as possible new biomarkers.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this study was to assess biomarkers of calcium homeostasis and tooth development, in mothers during pregnancy and their children at birth, for enamel hypoplasia (EH) in the primary maxillary central incisor teeth. METHODS Bayesian methodology was used for secondary data analyses from a randomized, controlled trial of prenatal vitamin D3 supplementation in healthy mothers (N = 350) and a follow-up study of a subset of the children. The biomarkers were serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), total circulating 25-dihydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D). The maternal biomarkers were assayed monthly during pregnancy, and the child's biomarkers were derived from cord blood. Digital images of the child's 2 teeth were scored for EH using Enamel Defects Index criteria for each of the incisal, middle, and cervical regions for an EH extent score. RESULTS The child EH prevalence was 41% (60/145), with most defects present in the incisal and middle tooth regions. Cord blood iPTH and 1,25(OH)2D levels were significantly associated with EH extent after controlling for maternal factors. For every 1 pg/mL increase in cord blood iPTH, the EH extent decreased by approximately 6%. For every 10 pg/mL increase in cord blood 1,25(OH)2D, the EH extent increased by almost 30% (holding all other terms constant and adjusting for subject-level heterogeneity). The relationship between maternal 25(OH)D and maternal mean iPTH varied significantly by EH extent. CONCLUSION The results suggest possible modifiable relationships of maternal and neonatal factors of calcium homeostasis during pregnancy and at birth for EH, contributing to the frontier of knowledge regarding sound tooth development for dental caries prevention.

Abstract
ᅟOBJECTIVES: Vitamin-D-dependent rickets type 1A (VDDR1A) is a rare inherited disease caused by defective activation of vitamin D. The aim of the study was to describe the craniofacial characteristics and the dental phenotype of patients with genetically confirmed VDDR1A. The VDDR1A findings were compared to findings in patients with X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) and healthy controls. MATERIAL AND METHODS Ten patients with VDDR1A were identified. The reference group for the comparison of cephalometric findings was 49 adults without chronic disease. The reference group for the comparison of dental findings was 30 adults with XLH. Clinical examination, clinical photos, and radiographs were obtained. Cephalometric analysis was performed. Photos and radiographs were visually evaluated. RESULTS The depth of the posterior cranial fossa (d-p and d-s-iop) in VDDR1A adults was reduced compared to the reference group (p < 0.05). Five (83%) of six adults with VDDR1A and one (4%) of 25 adults with XLH had enamel hypoplasia on several incisors and/or canines (p < 0.001). Three (75%) of four adults with VDDR1A and none of 16 adults with XLH had several first molars with enamel hypoplasia (p = 0.004). Five of 7 (71%) adults with VDDR1A and 24 of 30 (80%) adults with XLH had endodontically affected teeth. CONCLUSIONS The dental aberration of VDDR1A is more in line with the dental aberration of nutritional rickets than with the dental aberrations in XLH, suggesting the combination of low availability of both calcium and phosphate to be critical in periods of enamel formation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Knowledge on craniofacial and dental aberration in patients with rare diseases, e.g., inherited rickets, is of importance to the dental practitioner, especially during diagnostics and treatment in special care units.

Abstract
This study examines general health in the first year of life of a population of 127 subadults from the Imperial Roman necropolis of Isola Sacra (2nd-3rd century ACE). Health status was determined by analyzing 274 deciduous teeth from these children for Wilson bands (also known as accentuated striae), microscopic defects caused by a disruption to normal enamel development arising from some generalized external stressor. While macroscopic enamel defects, or hypoplasias, have long been used as proxies of general population health, we believe that this is the first population-wide study of microscopic defects in deciduous teeth. We used microstructural markers of enamel to attach very precise chronologies to Wilson band formation that allowed us to calculate maximum prevalence (MAP) and smoothed maximum prevalence (SMAP) distributions to portray what we believe to be a realistic risk profile for a past population of children. There appear to be two periods of high prevalence, the first beginning around age 2 months and continuing through month 5, and the second higher period beginning around month 6 and continuing through month 9. These results are discussed in light of historical records of Roman childhood rearing practices.

Abstract
Patients with 22q11 deletion syndrome have many and complex medical problems, including hypocalcemia and/or hypoparathyroidism. Odontological findings include enamel aberrations in both dentitions. In order to describe enamel morphology, chemical composition in primary teeth, and to investigate the relationship between medical history and morphological appearance, dental enamel was investigated in 38 exfoliated primary teeth from 15 children and adolescents. Morphology was studied by the use of a polarized light microscope, microradiography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray microanalysis, and secondary ion mass spectrometry. The morphological findings were compared with medical history. The teeth showed, in principle, a normal morphological appearance with regard to prism structure. A high frequency of aberrations, such as hypomineralization, hypoplasia and extra incremental lines, were found. The majority of the aberrations were found around the neonatal line. There was a relationship between high numbers of medical problems in the patients and enamel deviations. The result supports the hypothesis of under-reporting of both hypocalcemia and hypoparathyroidism in patients with 22q11 deletion syndrome.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to examine the morphology of primary and permanent human enamel, and the dentine-enamel junction, in individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) type I, III and IV in undecalcified sections using polarized light microscopy, microradiography and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and to relate the findings to the type of OI. SAMPLE AND METHODS Extracted or exfoliated teeth from 15 patients representing the OI types I, III and IV (12 primary teeth from seven patients, and 11 permanent teeth from eight patients). Ten primary and nine permanent teeth from normal healthy patients served as controls. The teeth were serially cut longitudinally in a bucco-lingual direction and contact microradiographs were made. The sections were examined in polarized light. Sections of primary and permanent teeth were examined by means of SEM. RESULTS This study shows that the permanent enamel from patients with OI exhibits few structural changes. No relationships were found between enamel morphology and the types of OI (I, III, IV). Primary enamel appeared to be slightly more irregularly mineralized, especially in cases with the additional diagnosis dentinogenesis imperfecta. The major findings were deviations in association with the dentine-enamel junction, and locally a lower degree of mineralization. CONCLUSIONS The mesodermal disease OI might also be manifested in ectodermal enamel, probably because of suboptimal mesenchymal-ectodermal interactions during amelogenesis.
