Malakoplakia of the prostate: a morphological and biochemical study

Renal malacoplakia: demonstration by MR imaging

We report herein a case of histologically verified bilateral renal malacoplakia. MRI features were distinctive and include multiple nodules 1-2 cm in diameter that were low in signal on T1, T2 and early and late post gadolinium images with intervening fibrous stroma. Demonstration of renal malacoplakia on MR images may obviate the need for major surgery and rapidly direct patients to appropriate antimicrobial therapy for treatment.

Malakoplakia of the prostate gland--report of two cases and review of the literature

Malokoplakia of the prostate is extremely rare. We report two cases of prostatic malokoplakia in one 60-year-old and one 64-year-old Libyan man, who both were presented with enlarged prostate containing firm to hard nodules. These cases may be misdiagnosed as carcinoma clinically, but the histology points out the correct diagnosis with the presence of Michaelis-Gutmann bodies in the proliferating histiocytes.

Malakoplakia of the prostate causing fatal fistula to rectum. A case report

A fatal case of malakoplakia of the prostate is described. The malakoplakia developed after 20 years of chronic prostatitis caused by E. coli and was not prevented by careful antibiotic treatment. Three years after the histological verification malakoplakia invasion caused fistula to rectum. Autopsy revealed no signs of any debilitating diseases.

The ultrastructural features of malakoplakia

The ultrastructural features of a case of disseminated malakoplakia are described and compared with available published cases. Generally macrophages were involved (although characteristic inclusions were seen in association with some plasma cells) and contained three types of cellular inclusions. These were (1) the phagolysosomes (2) and intermediate structure sharing features of the phagolysosome and the Michaelis-Gutmann (MG) body and (3) the MG body. All inclusions were delineated by unit membranes and their matrices (except those of large MG bodies) composed of membranous whorls and loops. It is suggested that these inclusions represent stages in the development of the MG body. Septate junctional complexes were observed between phagolysosomes and small MG bodies. These complexes may represent either a mechanism of organelle fusion or an abnormality of molecular organisation of the limiting unit membrane.

An unusual case of supraclavicular and colonic malakoplakia--a light and ultrastructural study

A case of malakoplakia of the supraclavicular region and colon in a 41-year-old patient is presented. Clinical, histopathological, histochemical and ultrastructural features are described. The etiology and pathogenesis are discussed. Malakoplakia is a chronic inflammatory disorder probably due to an abnormal response to infection with Gram negative bacteria, most likely Escherichia coli or Klebsiella. The disease is characterised by the accumulation of macrophages intermixed with plasma cells and lymphocytes. The malakoplakic cells are laden with phagolysosomes which may provide a suitable biochemical environment for the deposition of calcium to form the pathognomonic Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Ultrastructural examination enhances the accuracy of diagnosis since it highlights the presence of lysosomes, phagolysosomes, Michaelis-Gutmann bodies, and intact E. coli or their remnants.

Three cases of malakoplakia of prostate

Three cases that were confirmed as malakoplakia of the prostate by means of prostatic biopsy are reported here. All of the patients had a previous history of urinary tract infection with Escherichia coli. These are cases that had not been found in the literature in Japan, and they are deemed the eighth, ninth, and tenth cases of prostatic malakoplakia reported in the world literature.

Malakoplakia of the prostate: a report of two cases and a review of the literature

Two cases of malakoplakia of the prostate are documented, bringing the total described in the world literature to 15. This literature is reviewed, and typical features of the condition are established. The majority of the cases have had proven previous episodes of Escherichia coli infection of the urinary tract, but bacilliform organisms have yet to be demonstrated in the diseased prostatic tissue. Five of the reported cases have also had important additional disease, including three instances of malignant lung tumour. Finally, it is emphasised that recognition of prostatic malakoplakia as an entity will prevent its confusion with prostatic carcinoma.

Feline histiocytic colitis. A case report with electron microscopy

A 5-year-old cat with clinical colitis had histiocytic inflammation of colonic mucosa. Light and electron microscopy demonstrated bacilli, 0.7 x 3.0 micrometers, in various stages of degradation within macrophage cytoplasm. The disease is similar to histiocytic granulomatous bowel disease of other species. The cat responded to long-term treatment with antibiotics.
