Successful Use of Ectopic Pelvic Kidney for Living Related Donation Technical Aspects and Literature Review

Ectopic pelvic kidneys can provide an additional source of organs for transplantation. They are often excluded from donation in living donation programs mainly due to aberrant vascular and urinary anatomies. We present a donor with an ectopic left kidney, who successfully donated his kidney. The use of ectopic pelvic kidney for living kidney transplantation is a highly demanding surgical procedure but after extensive preoperative investigation in high volume centers with surgical expertise in vascular reconstruction and access surgery, ectopic pelvic kidneys should not be a contraindication for donation and should be considered as a viable option.

Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for ectopic kidney

Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy has been widely accepted in living donor kidney transplantation. Ectopic kidneys are sometimes encountered during the living donor workup. Ectopic kidneys have been utilized successfully for kidney transplant. However, all these donor nephrectomies were performed by open surgery. We report a successful case of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for ectopic kidney. The literature was reviewed and the technique points were emphasized.

Living donor transplantation of a pelvic kidney

Pelvic kidneys are uncommon anomalies rarely utilized in kidney transplantation. We describe a successful case of living-donor transplantation using a pelvic kidney in a 17-month-old infant with congenital renal dysplasia. The recipient had exhausted all options for renal replacement therapy, and urgent transplantation was considered a life saving treatment.

Use of a pelvic kidney for living transplantation: case report and review of the literature

Pelvic kidneys have anomalous vascular supplies and collecting systems. Therefore, careful radiologic and functional evaluation of these kidneys must be performed prior to procurement for transplantation. We report the successful use of a pelvic kidney for living-related transplantation.
