Abstract
The use of pharmaceutical drugs ends frequently in their inappropriate disposal and treatment at waste water treatment plants, which is the cause of their widespread presence in the environment. Yet, there is limited understanding or knowledge of their effects to non-target aquatic organisms. The drugs acetaminophen (analgesic and antipyretic) and propranolol (β-blocker) are widely found in the aquatic environment, where they can interact with non-target exposed organisms, causing adverse effects. Heat shock proteins (namely HSP70) are molecular chaperones which help to refold misfolded cellular proteins, and the increase in their in vivo levels indicates a change in the cell to counteract the proteotoxic effects of the triggered stress, namely which is consequent to exposure to toxicants. The objective of this study was to quantify the levels of liver HSP70 proteins in individuals of the neotropical fish species Phalloceros harpagos, acutely and chronically exposed to concentrations of acetaminophen and propranolol, in the range of those already determined to occur in the wild. Fish acutely exposed to acetaminophen (concentrations of 8, 80, 800, and 8000 μg L-1) and to propranolol (levels of 1, 10, and 1000 μg L-1) evidenced increased intensity of HSP70 immunolabeling in liver cells. Similarly, animals chronically exposed to propranolol, at concentrations of 0.0625, 0.125, 0.25, and 0.5 μg L-1, showed a comparable trend. This finding suggests the triggering of a cytoprotective effect that was effective in preventing cell death in exposed groups in relation to the control group. In contrast, chronic exposure to acetaminophen caused a decrease in HSP70 labeling intensity in fish hepatocytes (animals exposed to 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 μg L-1), with no induction of DNA fragmentation in the nuclei of hepatocytes of these fish. Some of the hepatic HSP70 responses observed in this study were obtained at levels already reported to occur in the wild. Finally, this study showed how levels of acetaminophen at microliter concentration can exert side effects on non-target organisms after chronic exposure, suggesting that environmentally exposed organisms may be subjected to adverse conditions that modify the typical response pattern of HSP70 levels.

Abstract
In this study, histopathological and morphological changes in gill and intestinal tissue of zebra fish exposed to acaricide yoksorrun were aimed to determine. Yoksorrun was applied to the experimental groups as 0.01 mL/L, 0.02 mL/L, and 0.03 mL/L. Histopathological findings which showed a parallel increase with the amount of exposure in the gill were determined. In the gills, disruption of lamellae shape, shortening and breakage of primary and secondary lamellae, edema, fusion, and separation in the secondary lamellae epithelium, hyperplasia were observed. In the intestine tissue of some groups, advanced necrosis at the tip of the villi and deterioration of the overall integrity of the villi in these regions, epithelial hyperplasia, increasing in eosinophilic cells in the submucosa, and dissolution in muscle fibers of tunica muscularis were observed. In the morphometric analysis of the gills, a significant decrease in gas exchange (PAGE) percentages (p < 0.0001) was observed in the experiment group compared to the control group. Compared to the control group, a significant decrease in the interlamellar distance and secondary lamellar length measurements of the gills and a significant increase in the secondary lamellar width measurement were observed. In basal epithelial thickness measurement, the result was insignificant between the groups. According to the results of the morphometric analysis of the intestine, a significant decrease in musculus externa was observed only in the group 2. In total wall thickness, there was a significant thinning (p < 0.0001) in all experimental groups. There was a significant shortening of the villi length (p < 0.0001) and a significant increase (p < 0.0001) in the villus width only in the group 2 and group 3. A significant increase in epithelial thickness after application was observed (p < 0.0001) in all groups compared to the control group. Based on the findings, it was decided that the living in the aquatic ecosystem would be adversely affected by this acaricide if exposed.

Abstract
The persistence and bioaccumulation of environmental pollutants in water bodies, soils and living tissues remain alarmingly related to environmental protection and ecosystem restoration. Adsorption-based techniques appear highly competent in sequestering several environmental pollutants. In this review, the recent research findings reported on the assessments of composts and compost-amended soils as adsorbents of heavy metal ions, dye molecules and xenobiotics have been appraised. This review demonstrates clearly the high adsorption capacities of composts for umpteen environmental pollutants at the lab-scale. The main inferences from this review are that utilization of composts for the removal of heavy metal ions, dye molecules and xenobiotics from aqueous environments and soils is particularly worthwhile and efficient at the laboratory scale, and the adsorption behaviors and effectiveness of compost-type adsorbents for agrochemicals (e.g. herbicides and insecticides) vary considerably because of variabilities in structure, topology, bond connectivity, distribution of functional groups and interactions of xenobiotics with the active humic substances in composts. Compost-based field-scale remediation of environmental pollutants is still sparse and arguably much challenging to implement if, furthermore, real-world soil and water contamination issues are to be addressed effectively. Hence, significant research and process development efforts should be promptly geared and intensified in this direction by extrapolating the lab-scale findings in a cost-effective manner.

Abstract
Over time, many pollutants of anthropogenic origin have caused the contamination of aquatic ecosystems. Among several characteristics, these compounds can reach the trophic chain, causing deleterious interactions with the biota. Pharmaceutical substances can be included in this scenario as emerging contaminants that reach the aquatic environment because of direct human and veterinary usage, and release by industrial effluents, as well as through domestic dumping of surplus drugs. The effects of these compounds on exposed organisms have been studied since the 1990s, but ecotoxicological data for such chemicals are still scarce especially concerning aquatic organisms from tropical regions. Paracetamol and propranolol were selected for this study since they are frequently found in surface waters. Paracetamol is a drug used as analgesic and antipyretic, while propranolol, a β-blocker, is used in the treatment of hypertension. The objective of this study was to assess the toxic effects of these substances on the neotropical freshwater fish Phalloceros harpagos after acute (96 h) and chronic (28 days) exposures. In order to understand the effects of these drugs on P. harpagos, biochemical markers were selected, including the enzymes involved in oxidative stress, xenobiotic metabolism, and neurotransmission (catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and cholinesterase activities, respectively). After acute exposure, no significant alterations were observed for catalase activity, suggesting the absence of oxidative stress. On the contrary, significant alterations in glutathione-S-transferases activity were described for the higher concentrations of both pharmaceuticals after acute exposure. In addition, acute exposure to paracetamol caused a significant increase of cholinesterase activity. None of the tested pharmaceuticals caused significant changes in catalase or cholinesterase activities after chronic exposure. Glutathione S-transferases activity was significantly increased for propranolol following chronic exposure, indicating the potential involvement of phase II detoxification pathway.

Abstract
The assessment of transgenerational effects should be incorporated in standard chronic toxicity protocols for the sake of a realistic extrapolation of contaminant effects to the population level. We propose a simple add-on to the standard 21-day chronic Daphnia magna assay, allowing the assessment of the reproductive performance of the offspring (F1 generation) born from the first clutch of the parental (F0) generation. The extended generational assay was performed simultaneously with the standard reproduction assay. With this design, we evaluated the lethal, reproductive, and transgenerational effects of four widespread and extensively used substances: a biocide/anti-fouling (copper sulphate), an industrial oxidizing agent (potassium dichromate), a pharmaceutical (paracetamol), and a quaternary ammonium compound (benzalkonium chloride). Benzalkonium chloride was the most toxic in terms of lethality, whereas paracetamol, copper sulphate, and potassium dichromate caused deleterious effects in the reproductive performance of exposed D. magna. Adverse effects in the fitness of the daughter (F1) generation were observed in the case of maternal exposure to paracetamol and copper sulphate, although they were not very pronounced. These findings highlight the usefulness of our approach and reinforce the view-shared by other authors-of the need for a generalised formal assessment of the transgenerational effects of pollutants.
