Knowledge, attitude, and behavior of female students concerning contraception in Athens, Greece

Contraceptive and reproductive health practices of unmarried women globally, 1999 to 2018: Systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Premarital sex practices and contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) among unmarried women worldwide remain unclear, even though unmarried women tend to have multiple sex partners over time, which makes their sexual behaviors particularly important to the sexual and reproductive health of society more broadly.

METHODS

We searched the MEDLINE, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases for relevant articles published between January 1, 1999 and December 31, 2018. Data on prevalence of premarital sexual intercourse, use of highly prevalent contraceptive methods, as well as CPR overall and at first sexual intercourse were extracted and estimated using a DerSimonian- Laird random effects model.

RESULTS

Of the 3918 articles identified, 37 covering 19 countries were included. The estimated overall prevalence of premarital sexual intercourse was 41.9% (95%CI 34.2-49.6%). Pooled CPR was 57.0% (95%CI 44.3-69.8%) overall and 57.6% (95% CI 39.5- 75.6%) at first intercourse. The overall prevalence of condom use was 51.2% (95%CI 42.7-59.7%), followed by oral contraceptives (20.5%, 95%CI 13.7-27.3%), withdrawal (12.7%, 95%CI 9.4-15.9%), and rhythm (12.1%, 95%CI 6.7-17.4%).

CONCLUSION

The findings of this global study indicate worrying trends in unprotected intercourse and contraceptive practices, suggesting the need for greater attention and resources aimed at educating unmarried adolescent women about sexual and reproductive health.

Anxiety and attitudes towards sex in women requesting emergency contraception

We performed an observational descriptive study on 89 women who requested for emergency contraception (EC) at the emergency units of two hospitals, Virgen de la Victoria Hospital, and Regional University Hospital in Malaga between October 2016 and April 2017. Both hospitals are on the Andalusian Public Health System. We evaluated a group of socio-demographic variables and others related to the beliefs and the knowledge about EC and contraception in general, sexual behavior, Eysenck's Inventory of Attitudes to Sex (satisfaction and promiscuity factors), and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). RESULTS: State anxiety scores were low in 10.8% of the participants, middle in 25.7% and high in the 63.5%. On the other hand, the scores for trait anxiety were low in 13.5%, middle in 39.2% and high in 47.3%. The demand for EC resulted in a stressful situation for women, especially for youngest women. Also, married women with children and a history of pregnancy terminations showed higher anxiety scores. Regarding sexual attitudes, the highest levels of anxiety (state and trait) were found in women with less knowledge about EC, and in those who reported less satisfaction with their sex life. Best fit regression models for anxiety levels included beliefs that ECs are abortive, sexual dissatisfaction and women's age as predictive variables for STAI scores. In conclusion, women who requested EC showed high scores in anxiety-state and -trait, with those of younger age presenting more intense emotions.

Current contraceptive awareness and use in Greek dental school students

AIMS

We conducted a pilot study in female dental school students in Northern Greece in order to assess their awareness and practice of contraception.

METHODS

The study population consisted of 88 female graduating students of the dental school. A self-administered, anonymous questionnaire was designed to explore students' awareness and use of contraceptive methods.

RESULTS

Condoms were the most widely used contraceptive method (they were used by 52.3% of the students); 20.5% of the students were using condoms in alternation or together with coitus interruptus, and 6.8% were using only coitus interruptus. The oral contraceptive pill (OC) was used as the only contraceptive method by 4.5% of the students and in combination with condoms by 9.1% of them. The majority (53.4%) considered condoms as the most effective contraceptive method; 9.1% of the students answered "sterilization" and the same percentage stated "intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD)." Overall, 20.5% of the students believed that the OC increases the risk of cancer, and 36.4% did not know if there is an association between OC use and risk of cancer. Among students not using OC, the respective percentages were 23.7% and 42.1%. among the students, 59.1% had asked their gynecologist about contraception. The contraceptive method used and the perception regarding the most effective contraceptive method did not differ significantly between those who had consulted their gynecologist and those who had not.

CONCLUSIONS

Dental school students in Greece appear to have inaccurate knowledge on important contraceptive issues, and this is reflected in their contraceptive practices. There is a pressing need to provide scientifically based sexual education if we are to avoid unwanted pregnancies.

Knowledge and practice of contraception among Greek female medical students

OBJECTIVE

In Greece, modern contraceptive methods are used on a limited scale. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge as well as the practice of contraception among female medical students in Greece.

STUDY DESIGN

Knowledge and practice of contraception of 102 female graduating medical students were assessed with a self-administered, anonymous questionnaire.

RESULTS

Most students were using condoms as the only contraceptive method (45.1%) and 16.7% were not applying any contraceptive method at all. Oral contraceptives were used as only contraceptive means by 4.9% of the students and in combination with condoms by another 4.9%. Condoms were thought to be the most effective contraceptive method available by 28.4% of the students, whereas 4.9% responded that they did not consider any contraceptive method to be effective. Only 55.9% of the students had ever asked their gynaecologist about contraception.

CONCLUSION

Much more time should be spent in teaching contraception in the Greek medical schools to ensure the delivery of adequate family planning guidance by future practitioners.
