Educating teachers about asthma

[Impact of an asthma educational intervention programme on teachers]

OBJECTIVE

Our objective was to measure the impact of an educational intervention program on teacher's knowledge about asthma and its management.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

Before and after quasi-experimental study, with control group, of an educational intervention, which had as its aim to improve the teacher's knowledge of asthma and its management, was conducted in some schools of San Sebastian (Gipuzkoa), Spain. The Newcastle Asthma knowledge Questionnaire (NAKQ) was used as a measuring tool, and an adaptation of the asthma, sport and health program was used as an educational intervention. The Wilcoxon signed rank test was used to compare the total score of the questionnaire before and after the intervention, and the McNemar test was performed to compare the percentages of correct answers to each item. The Mann-Whitney U test was also performed to compare the baseline score and the score at three months between the intervention group and control group. The size of the effect and the standardised mean response were studied.

RESULTS

A total of 138 teachers from 6 schools, which were chosen at random (study group), and 43 teachers in the control group participated in the study. In the study group, the mean score of the NAKQ before the educational intervention was 16.1±3.4 points, with a median of 16 (range 7 to 23). After the intervention the mean score increased to 22.3±4.1, with a median of 23 (range, 6 to 29). The mean difference in the overall score of the NAKQ was 7.0±4.2 points, with a median of 8 (range, -2 to17). Furthermore, the size of the effect was 2.0 (> 0.8) and the standardised mean response was 1.7. After 3 months of the intervention the mean score of the NAKQ was 21.4±3.0 points, with a median of 22 (range, 12 to 29) which was significantly higher than the score obtained before the intervention (P<.001) and slightly lower than the score obtained immediately after the intervention, assuming a size of the effect of 1.6 and a standardised mean response of 1.2. In the control group, the level of knowledge did not change modified and was lower than the level of the intervention group (P<.001).

CONCLUSIONS

An educational intervention program conducted among teachers significantly increases their knowledge of asthma. Moreover, the increase reduces slightly but maintains its higher level for at least 3 months. In spite of the fact that some aspects of knowledge improved with the educational intervention, they were not optimal.

Knowledge and attitudes of adolescents towards asthma: questionnaire results before and after a school-based education program

BACKGROUND

Previous studies on school-based education programs have reported that asthmatic and nonasthmatic adolescents, teachers and school personnel do not have enough information on asthma. However, the number of education programs including adolescents without asthma is not sufficient. The aim of the present study was to determine the knowledge of school children about asthma and to investigate whether their knowledge of asthma can be increased by an education program through a booklet distributed as a handout.

METHODS

This cross-sectional prospective questionnaire survey was carried out in a private school in Ankara, Turkey, between February and April 2006. 720 adolescents in grades 6, 7 and 8 were included. Knowledge about asthma was evaluated by a scoring system before and after the education offered by means of a booklet.

RESULTS

The final analysis was conducted on 642 students in total. The number of right answers in 5 categories, percentage of right answers and total questionnaire score improved significantly after the education received (p < 0.001). The total questionnaire scores of the girls (p = 0.002), those students with a university graduate mother (p = 0.006) and those with a physician parent (p = 0.041) were higher than those of the other pupils.

CONCLUSION

Theoretical material in the form of a booklet can be used in a school-based asthma education program in order to improve the knowledge of adolescents about asthma.

Evaluation of an education program for elementary school children with asthma

To evaluate the effectiveness of a comprehensive asthma management education program for 7- to 12-year-old children with asthma, entitled Roaring Adventures of Puff (RAP), 18 elementary schools in Edmonton were randomized to intervention and control groups. Participating in the program were 76 students with asthma in the intervention schools and 86 in the control schools. Children in the intervention schools had statistically significant improvements in unscheduled doctor visits, missed school days, moderate-to-severe parent rating of severity, severity of shortness of breath, limitations in the kind of play, and correct use of medications. Unscheduled doctor visits and missed school days were the only significant improvements in the control group; however, improvements were about half that of the intervention group. The results showed that a comprehensive, school-based asthma education program is feasible and improves outcomes.

Primary schoolteachers' knowledge of asthma: the impact of pharmacist intervention

The Newcastle Asthma Knowledge questionnaire was used to determine primary schoolteachers' knowledge of asthma. The mean score achieved (20.71 +/- 3.20), was representative of a reasonable degree of knowledge. However, knowledge of symptoms associated with asthma and of medications used to manage the condition was poor. Teachers who had contact with an asthmatic individual or who had received previous training on asthma had a significantly greater knowledge of asthma. An asthma training session, delivered by a pharmacist, was found to significantly improve primary schoolteachers' knowledge of the condition, however, the extent of the improvement was low.

Western Australian primary school teachers' knowledge about childhood asthma and its management

A total of 164 primary school teachers from Perth, Western Australia anonymously completed a survey of their knowledge and attitudes about asthma. These teachers were active in assisting children with asthma management but most (91.5%) felt that they did not know enough about asthma. Attitudes toward children with asthma were positive; 97% agreed that such children should be encouraged to participate in sporting activities. Specific knowledge about asthma management and medications was, however, poor. This large sample of Western Australian teachers knew more than their European counterparts but asthma training is needed and should be targeted at improving knowledge of both regular and emergency treatments for asthma.
