Development of a questionnaire to assess the determinants of exercise among breast cancer survivors in Puerto Rico

The Body Appreciation Scale-2: Psychometric evaluation of the Puerto Rican Spanish version among women aged ≥ 50 years who are breast cancer survivors

PURSPOSE

Self-perceived body image may impact women's well-being and levels of depressive symptomatology after cancer-related treatment. The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a 10-item, unidimensional tool used to assess body appreciation, a facet of body image. A culturally relevant version of the BAS-2 was needed for the Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico. A cross-cultural adaptation of the BAS-2 for Spanish spoken in Puerto Rico was conducted and tested its psychometric properties, using a methodological design. It was hypothesized that the BAS-2 adapted for Puerto Rican Spanish would have an internal consistency with a Cronbach α value greater than 0.70 and a unidimensional structure; and that body appreciation would be positively and significantly correlated to mental health and would be negatively and significantly correlated to depression and body mass index.

METHODS

One hundred-nine participants were recruited with a diagnosis of breast cancer (stages 0 to III) who completed adjuvant curative therapy at least two months to five years prior to recruitment.

RESULTS

Participants had an average age of 61.5 years (SD = 7.1), and 64.2% had a bachelor's degree or higher educational level. The internal consistency of the BAS-2 adapted for the Puerto Rican Spanish was Cronbach α = 0.92. Exploratory factor analysis indicated one-dimensionality of the test. Body appreciation was negatively correlated with higher levels of depressive symptomatology and with a higher body mass index, and positively correlated with higher levels of mental health.

CONCLUSION

The BAS-2 adapted for the Spanish of Puerto Rico is a psychometrically sound instrument to assess body image.

Facteurs psychosociaux associés à l’intention de pratiquer régulièrement des activités physiques modérées chez les survivantes du cancer du sein

Introduction

La pratique régulière d’activités physiques (AP) peut être bénéfique pour les survivantes du cancer du sein, mais la majorité d’entre elles n’en font pas suffisamment. Les effets secondaires à long terme des traitements oncologiques représentent des barrières à l’adoption de saines habitudes de vie.

Identifier les facteurs qui influencent l’intention de pratiquer régulièrement des AP modérées chez les survivantes du cancer du sein.

Méthodologie

Une étude corrélationnelle a été effectuée auprès de participantes (N=136) du programme Ma Santé Active (my Active Health) à l’aide d’un questionnaire auto-administré conçu selon la théorie du comportement planifié.

Résultats

Des analyses de régression multiple montrent que l’attitude, la perception de contrôle, les croyances comportementales et les croyances liées au contrôle sont les déterminants de l’intention.

Discussion et conclusion

Il est recommandé de fonder les interventions sur ces déterminants pour renforcer l’intention comportementale des survivantes du cancer du sein. Enfin, l’article renseignera les professionnels de la santé sur les cibles d’intervention à préconiser pour motiver les femmes ayant un diagnostic de cancer du sein à faire régulièrement des AP.

Psychosocial factors associated with the intention of breast cancer survivors to regularly practise moderate physical activity

Introduction

Regular physical activity (PA) can be beneficial to breast cancer survivors, although the majority do not devote sufficient time to the practice. The long-term side effects of cancer treatment represent barriers to adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

Goal

Identify factors that influence the intention to practise regular PA among breast cancer survivors.

Methodology

A correlational study was conducted among my Active Health (Ma Santé Active) program participants (N = 136), using a self-administered questionnaire based on the theory of planned behaviour.

Findings

Multiple regression analysis shows that attitude, perceived control, behavioural beliefs and control beliefs are the determinants of intention.

Discussion and conclusion

It is recommended to design interventions based on these determinants to strengthen the behavioural intention of breast cancer survivors. The paper will also inform healthcare professionals about the intervention targets to be utilized to motivate women with a breast cancer diagnosis to engage in regular PA.

Validating Factors That Influence Student Nurse Intention Regarding Perioperative Nursing

BACKGROUND

Failure to effectively recruit Newly Graduated Nurses (NGN) to perioperative nursing in the face of an anticipated nursing shortage will adversely impact patient outcomes. Development of interventions that address the recruitment problem is hampered by lack of a comprehensive understanding of factors that influence Student Nurse Intention (SNI) regarding perioperative nursing.

PURPOSE

This descriptive quantitative study aims to test a Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) questionnaire and validate factors that influence SNI.

METHOD

Quantitative sequence of exploratory sequential design. Item analysis, and principal component analysis of data are completed.

RESULTS

The instrument demonstrated satisfactory psychometrics. Immediate exposure or immersion, affirmation by nurse managers, and availability of positions were the most influential attitudinal, normative, and control beliefs respectively. Generational values have some influence on intention to choose perioperative nursing.

CONCLUSION

A TPB questionnaire is useful for measuring factors that influence SNI.

Quality assessment of TPB-based questionnaires: a systematic review

Objective

This review is aimed at assessing the quality of questionnaires and their development process based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) change model.

Methods

A systematic literature search for studies with the primary aim of TPB-based questionnaire development was conducted in relevant databases between 2002 and 2012 using selected search terms. Ten of 1,034 screened abstracts met the inclusion criteria and were assessed for methodological quality using two different appraisal tools: one for the overall methodological quality of each study and the other developed for the appraisal of the questionnaire content and development process. Both appraisal tools consisted of items regarding the likelihood of bias in each study and were eventually combined to give the overall quality score for each included study.

Results

8 of the 10 included studies showed low risk of bias in the overall quality assessment of each study, while 9 of the studies were of high quality based on the quality appraisal of questionnaire content and development process.

Conclusion

Quality appraisal of the questionnaires in the 10 reviewed studies was successfully conducted, highlighting the top problem areas (including: sample size estimation; inclusion of direct and indirect measures; and inclusion of questions on demographics) in the development of TPB-based questionnaires and the need for researchers to provide a more detailed account of their development process.
