Rapid prototyping in orthopaedic surgery: a user's guide

Rapid prototyping (RP) is applicable to orthopaedic problems involving three dimensions, particularly fractures, deformities, and reconstruction. In the past, RP has been hampered by cost and difficulties accessing the appropriate expertise. Here we outline the history of rapid prototyping and furthermore a process using open-source software to produce a high fidelity physical model from CT data. This greatly mitigates the expense associated with the technique, allowing surgeons to produce precise models for preoperative planning and procedure rehearsal. We describe the method with an illustrative case.

Biological and biophysical principles in extracorporal bone tissue engineering. Part III

Over the last decade extracorporal bone tissue engineering has moved from laboratory to clinical application. The restoration of maxillofacial bones from cell harvesting through product manufacture and end-use has benefited from innovations in the fields of biomechanical engineering, product marketing and transplant research. Cell/scaffold bone substitutes face a variety of unique clinical challenges which must be addressed. This overview summarises the recent state of the art and future anticipations in the transplantation of extracorporally fabricated bone tissues.

Recent development on computer aided tissue engineering--a review

The utilization of computer-aided technologies in tissue engineering has evolved in the development of a new field of computer-aided tissue engineering (CATE). This article reviews recent development and application of enabling computer technology, imaging technology, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD and CAM), and rapid prototyping (RP) technology in tissue engineering, particularly, in computer-aided tissue anatomical modeling, three-dimensional (3-D) anatomy visualization and 3-D reconstruction, CAD-based anatomical modeling, computer-aided tissue classification, computer-aided tissue implantation and prototype modeling assisted surgical planning and reconstruction.
