Abstract
Cone-rod dystrophy (CORD) is a type of progressive hereditary retinal dystrophies that causes cone predominant photoreceptor degeneration characterized by wide genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity. Macular cyst (MC) occurs very infrequently in the pediatric age group and has rarely been described in CORD. We report a case of young-onset CORD that was affected by an isolated ABCA4 mutation complicated by the development of MC. Through serial spectral-domain ocular coherence tomography MC has been observed to persist for 24 months before its resolution, followed by retinal thinning and macular atrophy with corresponding visual acuity decline. The formation of MC and visual acuity appeared to be directly correlated in ABCA4-related CORD and its manifestation is invaluable in predicting eventual visual loss. We further speculate that dysfunctional outer blood-retinal barrier may play a role in the pathophysiology of MC development in CORD.

Abstract
Phenotypes observed in a large cohort of patients with cone and cone-rod dystrophies (COD/CORDs) are described based on multimodal retinal imaging features in order to help in analyzing massive next-generation sequencing data. Structural abnormalities of 58 subjects with molecular diagnosis of COD/CORDs were analyzed through specific retinal imaging including spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (BAF/IRAF). Findings were analyzed with the underlying genetic defects. A ring of increased autofluorescence was mainly observed in patients with CRX and GUCY2D mutations (33% and 22% of cases respectively). “Speckled” autofluorescence was observed with mutations in three different genes (ABCA4 64%; C2Orf71 and PRPH2, 18% each). Peripapillary sparing was only found in association with mutations in ABCA4, although only present in 40% of such genotypes. Regarding SD-OCT, specific outer retinal abnormalities were more commonly observed in particular genotypes: focal retrofoveal interruption and GUCY2D mutations (50%), foveal sparing and CRX mutations (50%), and outer retinal atrophy associated with hyperreflective dots and ABCA4 mutations (69%). This study outlines the phenotypic heterogeneity of COD/CORDs hampering statistical correlations. A larger study correlating retinal imaging with genetic results is necessary to identify specific clinical features that may help in selecting pathogenic variants generated by high-throughput sequencing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autosomal dominant cone-rod dystrophy 7 (CORD7) has been previously associated with the RIM1 c.2459G>A (Arg820His) mutation. Cystoid macular oedema (CMO) is a rare feature of CORD and has not been described in CORD7. We report a patient who was heterozygous for the RIM1 mutation with bilateral CMO and who manifested a retinitis pigmentosa phenotype. MATERIALS AND METHODS The patient's medical notes were retrospectively reviewed over an 18-month period. Genetic testing was performed by next generation sequencing for a panel of 176 genes associated with retinal dystrophy. RESULTS A 34-year-old man presented with a 5-year history of bilateral floaters and blurred vision. Visual acuity was 20/23 and 20/33 in the right and left eyes, respectively. Optical coherence tomography scans revealed bilateral CMO. Goldmann visual field tests detected mid-peripheral ring scotomas. Electrodiagnostic testing was overall consistent with a primary photoreceptor abnormality involving both rods and cones. Subsequent genetic testing identified heterozygosity for the RIM1 c.2459G>A (Arg820His) mutation. Various treatments for CMO were trialled unsuccessfully. However, at his latest clinic appointment the CMO had partially improved following topical brinzolamide therapy. Most recent visual acuity was 20/25 in the right eye and 20/24 in the left eye. CONCLUSIONS This is the first reported case of bilateral CMO in association with the RIM1 mutation. Overall, our findings were more consistent with a phenotype of retinitis pigmentosa. This could imply that the RIM1 mutation causes diverse retinal dystrophies, or that the previously described CORD7 phenotype resulted from a different variant on the same haplotype.

Abstract
Spectral domain coherence tomography (SD OCT) has become an important tool in the management of pediatric retinal diseases. It is a noncontact imaging device that provides detailed assessment of the microanatomy and pathology of the infant retina with a short acquisition time allowing office examination without the requirement of anesthesia. Our understanding of the development and maturation of the infant fovea has been enhanced by SD OCT allowing an in vivo assessment that correlates with histopathology. This has helped us understand the critical correlation of foveal development with visual potential in the first year of life and beyond. In this review, we summarize the recent literature on the clinical applications of SD OCT in studying the pathoanatomy of the infant macula, its ability to detect subclinical features, and its correlation with disease and vision. Retinopathy of prematurity and macular edema have been discussed in detail. The review also summarizes the current status of SD OCT in other infant retinal conditions, imaging the optic nerve, the choroid, and the retinal nerve fibre in infants and children, and suggests future areas of research.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the prevalence and interrelationships of epiretinal membranes (ERMs), vitreomacular traction (VMT), macular cysts, paravascular cysts (PVCs), lamellar macular holes (LMHs), full-thickness macular holes (FTMHs), and visual impairment in a population-based study of older adults. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS There were 1913 participants aged 63 to 102 years at the 20-year Beaver Dam Eye Study follow-up examination in 2008-2010, of whom 1540 (2980 eyes) had gradable spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT) scans of the macula in at least 1 eye. METHODS The presence of ERMs and other retinal lesions was determined by standardized grading of macular SD OCT scans and photographs of 3 standard fields. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Epiretinal membranes, VMT, macular cysts, PVCs, LMHs, FTMHs, and visual impairment. RESULTS By using SD OCT, the prevalence of ERMs (34.1%), VMT (1.6%), macular cysts (5.6%), PVCs (20.0%), LMHs (3.6%), and FTMHs (0.4%) was estimated. The prevalence of macular cysts (P < 0.001), ERMs (P < 0.001), and VMT (P = 0.005) increased with age; the prevalence of PVCs (P = 0.05) decreased with age; and the prevalence of LMHs was not associated with age (P = 0.70). The prevalence of macular cysts, LMHs, and ERMs was higher in eyes with a history of cataract surgery. Macular cysts and ERMs were more common in eyes with retinal diseases, such as proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and retinal detachment, than in eyes without these conditions. Macular cysts, ERMs, and FTMHs were associated with visual impairment. While adjusting for age and sex, macular cysts (odds ratio [OR], 3.96; P < 0.0001), PVCs (OR, 1.45, P = 0.007), LMHs (OR, 10.62; P < 0.001), VMT (OR, 2.72, P = 0.01), and visual impairment (OR, 3.23; P < 0.001) were more frequent in eyes with ERMs compared with eyes without ERMs. CONCLUSIONS Epiretinal membranes are associated with macular cysts, PVCs, LMHs, VMT, and visual impairment. Further follow-up will allow better understanding of the natural history of ERMs and VMT and their relationships to the development of macular cysts and LMHs in the aging population.
