Catalytic pyrolysis of coconut oil with Ni/SBA-15 for the production of bio jet fuel

Catalytic pyrolysis of vegetable oil is one of the potential routes to convert oil to drop-in biofuels, known as renewable hydrocarbons. In this paper, we explored catalytic pyrolysis of coconut oil using SBA-15 impregnated with Ni in proportions of 1% to 5% to produce sustainable aviation fuel. The catalysts were synthesized, calcined and then characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, and EDS. In order to better understand the behavior of this process, thermal and kinetic studies were carried out by thermogravimetry. The TG curves of vegetable oil with (10%) and without catalysts were obtained at heating rates of 5, 15 and 20 °C min⁻¹, in the temperature range between 30 and 600 °C. The kinetic parameters were calculated by the Ozawa–Flynn–Wall (OFW) and Kissinger–Akahira–Sunose (KAS) methods. In the kinetic study, lower heat rates promoted higher conversions and the KAS model suits the process. The results calculated for the OC sample using the two kinetic models showed an increase in the E_a energy as the conversion progressed to a certain point. Catalytic pyrolysis experiments were performed in a one-stage tubular reactor at 500 °C with a catalyst loading of 10 wt% on the basis of mass of oil. The catalyst with 5% Ni showed greater presence of hydrocarbons and greater formation of water, indicating that the deoxygenation process occurred through decarbonylation. With this, the present study was successful in the development of methodologies for obtaining hydrocarbons with a composition close to that of drop-in fuels, compared to the process carried out with vegetable oil in the absence of catalysts.

Application of a 2D Molybdenum Telluride in SERS Detection of Biorelevant Molecules

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides have become promising candidates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), but currently very few examples of detection of relevant molecules are available. Herein, we show the detection of the lipophilic disease marker β-sitosterol on few-layered MoTe₂ films. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown films are capable of nanomolar detection, exceeding the performance of alternative noble-metal surfaces. We confirm that the enhancement occurs through the chemical enhancement (CE) mechanism via formation of a surface-analyte complex, which leads to an enhancement factor of ≈10⁴, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), UV-vis, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Low values of signal deviation over a seven-layered MoTe₂ film confirms the homogeneity and reproducibility of the results in comparison to noble-metal substrate analogues. Furthermore, β-sitosterol detection within cell culture media, a minimal loss of signal over 50 days, and the opportunity for sensor regeneration suggest that MoTe₂ can become a promising new SERS platform for biosensing.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy as tools for identification of steryl ferulates

Steryl ferulates are a mixture of minor bioactive compounds, possessing well-established health benefits. However, individual steryl ferulate species show structural differences, which seem to substantially influence their health-promoting potential. In this study, we tested Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, as potential tools in the identification of steryl ferulates. On the basis of our spectral data obtained from various individual steryl ferulates and steryl ferulate mixtures extracted from rice (γ-oryzanol), corn bran, and wheat bran, we provide comprehensive peak assignment tables for both FTIR and Raman. With the help of FTIR spectroscopy, structural differences between individual steryl ferulates were possible to identify, such as the presence of the cyclopropane ring and additional differences in the side chain of the sterane skeleton. Data obtained with Raman spectroscopy provided us with a control for FTIR peak assignment and also with some additional information on the samples. However, detecting structural differences between steryl ferulates was not possible with this method. We consider that FTIR spectroscopy alone or combined with Raman provides detailed data on the structures of steryl ferulates. Moreover, thorough peak assignment tables presented in this study could prove to be helpful tools when identifying steryl ferulates, especially as a group, in future studies.

7α-Hydroxy-β-Sitosterol from Chisocheton tomentosus Induces Apoptosis via Dysregulation of Cellular Bax/Bcl-2 Ratio and Cell Cycle Arrest by Downregulating ERK1/2 Activation

In continuation of our interest towards the elucidation of apoptotic pathways of cytotoxic phytocompounds, we have embarked upon a study on the anticancer effects of 7α-hydroxy-β-sitosterol (CT1), a rare natural phytosterol oxide isolated from Chisocheton tomentosus. CT1 was found to be cytotoxic on three different human tumor cell lines with minimal effects on normal cell controls, where cell viability levels were maintained ≥80% upon treatment. Our results showed that cell death in MCF-7 breast tumor cells was achieved through the induction of apoptosis via downregulation of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. CT1 was also found to increase proapoptotic Bax protein levels, while decreasing anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 protein levels, suggesting the involvement of the intrinsic pathway. Reduced levels of initiator procaspase-9 and executioner procaspase-3 were also observed following CT1 exposure, confirming the involvement of cytochrome c-mediated apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway. These results demonstrated the cytotoxic and apoptotic ability of 7α-hydroxy-β-sitosterol and suggest its potential anti-cancer use particularly on breast adenocarcinoma cells.
