The involvement of people with lifelong disability and communication impairment in lecturing to speech-language pathology students

Exploring the impact of a 'Clients-as-Tutors Program on speech-language pathology students' and graduates understanding of client-centred practice

PURPOSE

This study explored the impact of an Australian regional university's Clients-as-Tutors Program (CTP) on speech-language pathology students' perception and understanding of client-centred practice.

METHOD

Two focus group interviews comprising three final-year students and four newly graduated speech-language pathologists who had completed the CTP. An inductive thematic analysis was undertaken to identify salient themes.

RESULT

Three themes were identified: (a) learning from theory, (b) learning from others, and (c) learning from yourself. These themes represented all participants' experiences in the CTP, yet there were unique, individual journeys that each participant experienced.

CONCLUSION

Findings from this study have the capacity to affect change in how client-centred practice is taught at universities across speech-language pathology and other health courses, to disrupt the traditional power structure between client and clinician, and to provide an evidence base for the role of experiential learning in this area.

Community and university partnerships: Integrating Sustainable Development Goals 3, 4, 10, 11, and 17

PURPOSE

Speech-language pathology graduates are not only expected to be proficient in their area of expertise but to have developed skills that contribute to society as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the relationship between the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, good health and well-being (SDG 3), quality education (SDG 4), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17) through the involvement of experts-by-experience in the classroom on a pre-registration speech-language pathology course.

RESULT

An innovative approach to student-centred learning involved Tom, a person with autism, his family, and his speech-language pathologist (SLP). This commentary is co-written with Tom's mother and advocate, his SLP, and a university educator. Tom's mother's writing was not changed in anyway as agreed in the writing contract.

CONCLUSION

Co-teaching with experts-by-experience (a parent, and a person with a communication disability) has the potential to strengthen the bonds between communities and universities. Involvement by experts-by-experience promotes equality in teaching and sees the person and the ability behind the disability. SLPs and university educators must collaborate to make this a reality. This commentary paper focusses on SDG 17 to illuminate the relationship between SDG 3, SDG 4, SDG 10, and SDG 11.

Educating health science students about disability: Teachers' perspectives on curricular gaps

BACKGROUND

People living with disabilities are significantly more likely than their peers to find health professionals' skills and facilities inadequate. The 66th World Health Assembly called for better health care for people with disabilities including more inclusive health services and a stronger focus on professional training.

OBJECTIVE

To explore how teachers at a New Zealand university perceived the need, approaches, and systemic challenges to enhance disability education for health professionals in training.

METHODS

Qualitative analysis of interviews with 11 key informants teaching in population health, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and optometry training programmes. Transcribed interview recordings were analysed using a general inductive approach.

RESULTS

The participants described a range of teaching approaches that they used to increase disability awareness among their students. However, these were largely ad hoc individually driven initiatives reflecting personal interests. Participants identified a critical need to develop and implement a systematic, integrated approach to enhance disability education particularly from a social justice perspective among students in health disciplines. Engaging people with lived experience of disability in teaching and course design, and senior administrative commitment were identified as necessary to address current gaps in education.

CONCLUSIONS

In order to develop a health professional workforce competent to respond to the needs of people with disabilities, greater attention is required at a strategic level to enhance the profile of disability education in health curricula. Meaningful engagement of people with disability and senior leadership commitment are critical components that can enable effective progression of this agenda.

A systematic review of the barriers and facilitators to the provision and use of low-tech and unaided AAC systems for people with complex communication needs and their families

PURPOSE

Speech-language pathologists may introduce augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) systems to people who are unable to use speech for everyday communication. Despite the benefits of AAC systems, they are significantly underutilized by the people with complex communication needs. The current review aimed to synthesize the barriers and facilitators to the provision and use of low-tech and unaided AAC systems.  Materials and methods: Relevant literature was identified via a systematic search strategy. Included articles (n = 43) were evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. Qualitative framework analysis was then completed with reference to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF).  Results and conclusion: Most barriers and facilitators were coded as contextual factors within the ICF. Of most prominence were environmental factors, including attitudes of and supports provided by professionals, family members, and the society at large. Themes were also identified which related to the personal factors, including the user's own attitude, socioeconomic status, and culture. Beyond these contextual factors, the remaining codes related to body functions such as cognition and movement. There are numerous barriers to the provision and use of low-tech and unaided AAC systems, which may contribute to the inadequate use of these systems by people with complex communication needs. Suggestions for reducing these barriers are presented with regards to the person with complex communication needs, their family, and the professionals involved in their care. Implications for Rehabilitation AAC systems can reduce participation restrictions for people with complex communication needs. The provision and use of AAC systems is influenced by environmental factors, personal factors, and features of a person's body function. SLPs may need to collaborate with a large multidisciplinary team to successfully introduce AAC systems. SLP, teaching, and nursing students require theoretical and practical experience in AAC throughout their training to enable the provision and use of these systems.
