Abstract
Trace metals play a vital role in a variety of biological processes, but excessive amounts can be toxic and are receiving increasing attention. Trace metals in the environment are released from natural sources, such as rock weathering, volcanic eruptions, and other human activities, such as industrial emissions, mineral extraction, and vehicle exhaust. Lifestyle, dietary habits and environmental quality are the main sources of human exposure to trace metals, which play an important role in inducing human reproductive infertility. The purpose of this review is to summarize the distribution of various trace metals in oocyte and to identify the trace metals that may cause oocyte used in the design and execution of toxicological studies.

Abstract
Excessive doses of molybdenum (Mo) and cadmium (Cd) have toxic effects on animals. Nevertheless, the reproductive toxicity elicited by Mo and Cd co-exposure remains obscure. To evaluate the co-induce toxic impacts of Mo and Cd on ovaries, 8-day-old 40 healthy ducks were stochastically distributed to four groups and were raised a basal diet supplemented with Cd (4 mg/kg Cd) and/or Mo (100 mg/kg Mo). In the 16th week, ovary tissues were gathered. The data revealed that Mo and/or Cd decreased GSH content, CAT, T-SOD, and GSH-Px activities and increased MDA and H2O2 levels. Moreover, there was a significant decrease in nuclear Nrf2 protein level and its related downstream factors, while cytoplasmic Nrf2 protein level showed a substantial increase. Additionally, a marked elevation was observed in ferrous ion content and TFRC, GCLC, SLC7A11, ACSL4, and PTGS2 expression levels, while FTH1, FTL1, FPN1, and GPX4 expression levels were conversely reduced. These indicators exhibited more marked changes in the joint exposure group. In brief, our results announced that Mo and/or Cd resulted in oxidative stress and ferroptosis in duck ovaries. Synchronously, the Cd and Mo mixture intensified the impacts.

Abstract
Molybdenum is an essential trace element for human health and survival, with molybdenum-containing enzymes catalysing multiple reactions in the metabolism of purines, aldehydes, and sulfur-containing amino acids. Recommended daily intakes vary globally, with molybdenum primarily sourced through the diet, and supplementation is not common. Although the benefits of molybdenum as an anti-diabetic and antioxidant inducer have been reported in the literature, there are conflicting data on the benefits of molybdenum for chronic diseases. Overexposure and deficiency can result in adverse health outcomes and mortality, although physiological doses remain largely unexplored in relation to human health. The lack of knowledge surrounding molybdenum intake and the role it plays in physiology is compounded during pregnancy. As pregnancy progresses, micronutrient demand increases, and diet is an established factor in programming gestational outcomes and maternal health. This review summarises the current literature concerning varied recommendations on molybdenum intake, the role of molybdenum and molybdoenzymes in physiology, and the contribution these play in gestational outcomes.

Abstract
Although considered a good alternative to organophosphate pesticides, there are reports indicating adverse effects of neonicotinoid insecticides on reproduction. Our aim was to assess the effects of exposure to low doses of imidacloprid on antioxidant state, DNA damage, and concentration of essential elements in the testes and epididymis using a rat model. Adult male Wistar rats were orally treated with doses comparable to currently proposed health-based reference values: 0.06 (ADI), 0.80 (10× AOEL), or 2.25 (1/200 LD50) mg/kg b.w./day for 28 consecutive days. Exposure to 2.25 mg/kg b.w./day of imidacloprid resulted in a significantly lower testis weight (1.30 ± 0.17 g compared to 1.63 ± 0.15 g in controls). Treatment with 0.06 mg/kg b.w./day increased the level of reduced glutathione in the epididymis (73%), while the activities of epididymal glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase significantly increased in all treated rats (74-92% and 26-39%, respectively). Exposure to imidacloprid resulted in a low, but significant, level of DNA damage in testicular sperm cells regardless of the concentration applied (<28% compared to the negative control). Higher concentrations of Mo were measured in the testes of rats treated with 0.80 and 2.25 mg/kg b.w./day (72.9 ± 7.9 and 73.9 ± 9.1 mg/g, respectively) compared to the control animals (60.5 ± 7.8 mg/g). Higher concentrations of Na were measured in the testes of rats treated with 2.25 mg/kg b.w./day (1679 ± 82 mg/g compared to 1562 ± 56 mg/g in controls). The fact that such low doses of imidacloprid were able to produce measurable biological effects calls for the further evaluation of this widely used insecticide.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Cerium is a member of the rare metals group and widely used in drug delivery, gene therapy, molecular imaging and medicine. In this study, we investigated the effect of different doses of Cerium (IV) oxide (CeO2 ) during pregnancy on neonatal mice ovaries, as well as its effect on blood biochemical parameters. METHODS Thirty pregnant NMRI mice were divided into five groups: Control and 4 groups treated with CeO2 (10, 25, 80, 250 mg/kg.bw i.p) at the GD7 and GD14. The ovarian histological of neonatal (2 and 6 day-olds), as well as blood serum of neonates at 15-dpp were analyzed. RESULTS Count of ovarian primordial follicles in neonates at 2 dpp showed a significant decrease in the groups treated with 80 and 250 mg/kg.bw doses of CeO2 . There was also a significant decrease in ovarian primordial and primary follicles in neonates at 6-dpp at 250 mg/kg.bw doses of CeO2 in the control (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in serum levels of malondialdehyde and total antioxidant capacity between the experimental and control groups. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that the effects of CeO2 on the ovarian tissue of neonatal mice during pregnancy may be dose-dependent.

Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the relationship between concentrations of macro and trace elements in blood serum, and fluids from small and large follicles (SFF and LFF, respectively), oviduct (OF), and uterus (UF) of female dromedary camels. Fluids from small (2-6 mm) and large follicles (7-20 mm), oviduct and uterus, and blood samples were collected from 19 camels. The results indicated that the concentrations of serum Mg, Fe, and Mn were significantly higher than their follicular fluid, OF, and UF concentrations. Levels of Zn, Fe, Cu, Cr, and Mn were significantly higher in SFF than in LFF. Se and Mo concentrations were higher in LFF. Co concentration was lower in serum than in reproductive tract fluids. Cr concentration was higher in UF and OF than in the serum, SFF, and LFF. High Ca concentration was observed for serum and SFF, followed by LFF. The concentration of Na was about 1.18-fold higher in SFF than in serum, OF, and LFF, and approximately 4.1-fold higher in serum than in UF. K was present in higher concentration in SFF than in serum and LFF; however, its concentration was low in UF and OF. In conclusion, this study shows the concentrations of certain elements in small and large follicular, uterine, and oviductal fluids, which may be low or high depending on their function in the development and growth of follicles. This information can support the development of new media for in vitro oocyte maturation and fertilization of female camels.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to investigate the mechanisms of excessive-fluoride-induced reduction of oocyte development potential in mice. The development morphology of oocyte and the changes of pathomorphology in ovary were observed. The protein expression levels of apoptosis factors, including Bax, Bcl-2, casepase-3, casepase-9 and cytochrome c, and the mRNA expression levels of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD1, GSH-Px1, CAT and inducible nitric oxide synthase were measured by Western blot and real-time PCR, respectively. DNA damage in the ovary was analysed by single cell gel electrophoresis and TUNEL staining. Results indicated that the structure and function of ovarian cells were seriously damaged, followed, the development potential of oocyte was reduced by excessive fluoride. The expression levels of apoptosis factors were up-regulated and antioxidant enzymes were significantly down-regulated. Meanwhile, the contents of ROS, MDA, NO and iNOS were significantly increased. Whereas, the activities of SOD1, GSH-Px1 and CAT was significantly decreased compared with the control group. Simultaneously, the results of DNA analysis indicated that the tail length and tailing ratio of ovarian cells were significantly increased in the fluoride group. In summary, the results provided compelling evidence that excessive fluoride intake can reduce the development potential of oocyte by inducing oxidative stress and apoptosis in the ovary of female mice.

Abstract
PURPOSE A hypothesis-generating pilot study exploring associations between essential trace elements measured in follicular fluid (FF) and urine and in vitro fertilization (IVF) endpoints. METHODS We recruited 58 women undergoing IVF between 2007 and 2008, and measured cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, and zinc in FF (n = 46) and urine (n = 45) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). We used multivariable regression models to assess the impact of FF and urine trace elements on IVF outcomes, adjusted for age, body mass index, race, and cigarette smoking. RESULTS Trace elements were mostly present at lower concentrations in FF than in urine. The average number of oocytes retrieved was positively associated with higher urine cobalt, chromium, copper, and molybdenum concentrations. FF chromium and manganese were negatively associated with the proportion of mature oocytes, yet urine manganese had a positive association. FF zinc was inversely associated with average oocyte fertilization. Urine trace elements were significant positive predictors for the total number of embryos generated. FF copper predicted lower embryo fragmentation while urine copper was associated with higher embryo cell number and urine manganese with higher embryo fragmentation. No associations were detected for implantation, pregnancy, or live birth. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest the importance of trace elements in both FF and urine for intermediate, although not necessarily clinical, IVF endpoints. The results differed using FF or urine biomarkers of exposure, which may have implications for the design of clinical and epidemiologic investigations. These initial findings will form the basis of a more definitive future study.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of molybdenum (Mo) combined with cadmium (Cd) on the antioxidant function and the mRNA expression levels of apoptosis-related genes in duck ovaries, 60 healthy 11-old-day female ducks were treated with hexaammonium molybdate ([(NH4)6Mo7O24·4H2O]) or/and cadmium sulfate (3CdSO4·8H2O) at different doses on a daily basis for 120 days. On the 120th day, ten female birds in each group were euthanized, and the ovaries and blood were collected to determine the antioxidant indexes and the mRNA expression levels of Bak-1, Bcl-2, and caspase-3 in ovaries. In addition, ovary tissues were subjected to histopathological analysis with optical microscope. The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity decreased significantly (P < 0.01) in treated groups comparing with control while the nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity increased (P < 0.01) both in ovary tissue and serum. The Bak-1 and caspase-3 expressions were upregulated while the Bcl-2 was downgraded by Mo or/and Cd. Biomolecules were affected in all metal-treated groups, whereas combined-treated animals showed greater effects. What is more, pathological damage in Mo and Cd combination treated groups was more severe. The results from the present study indicated that Mo or/and Cd caused oxidative stress and apoptosis in duck ovaries. Combination of Mo and Cd showed additive or synergistic effect leading to apoptosis and oxidative stress, and the pathway might be the mitochondrial pathway.
