Abstract
The response of enhanced dietary dairy cows with linolenic-rich sources during the persistence period was studied to determine its effectiveness on some blood constituents, milk yield and milk fatty acid profile. A complete randomized design experiment was conducted in the spring and involved 20 Friesian cows (60 days in milk) that were divided into four groups of five animals by milk production according to different types of flax source in isonitrogenous and isoenergetic rations: a traditional diet with no flax source (CO), a diet contains flaxseed meal (FLM), a diet contains whole flaxseed (FLS) and a diet contains flax oil (FLO). DM intake and DMI% of weight were increased for cows fed FLM. However, Omega-3 intake was reduced for cows fed on CO ration. Although, blood serum metabolites did not differ among treatments (p < 0.05) except serum cholesterol which was increased with FLO cows, and serum total lipid which was reduced with FLM cows. Cows fed on flax product and control peaked in milk production at the same time (8-week post-partum), and cows fed on FLM continued in peak production for a longer period. Using flax products enhanced milk production, cows fed FLM had higher milk yield than those fed CO (20.76 vs.16.32 kg/d), and there was no difference between cows fed FLO (17.87 kg/d) and those fed FLS (18.01 kg/d). Also, energy-corrected milk yield and 3.5 fat-corrected milk yield were increased with cows fed on FLM as compared with cows fed CO ration. Flax products had no significant effect on milk fat and protein %, whereas cows fed FLM had the greatest fat% value (3.35%) and FLS had the greatest protein% value (2.66%). Moreover, fat and protein yield increased significantly in treatment groups compared to the CO group, whereas they were the greatest in FLM g (0.700 and 0.540 kg/d), respectively. Concentrations of omega-3-fatty acids in milk fat were increased by using FLO in the ration; using flaxseed meal enhanced conjugated linoleic acids in milk fat and resulted in the highest omega-6-to-omega-3-fatty-acids ratio. The data suggest that flax seed meals can be used as a fat source in the diet of dairy cows during the persistence period with a good response to milk production and its health properties. Moreover, flax oil should be protected before use in rations to prevent its components from saturation or being changed in the rumen.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of continuous administration of linoleic acid or linolenic acid into the intra-uterine horn, ipsilateral to the corpus luteum, on the duration of the estrous cycle and plasma progesterone (P4) concentration. The effects of linoleic and linolenic acids on bovine uterine and luteal functions were also studied using a tissue culture system. Intra-uterine administration of linoleic or linolenic acid (5 mg/10 ml of each per day) in cows, between days 12 and 21, resulted in a prolonged estrous cycle compared to the average duration of the last one to three estrous cycles before administration in each group (P < 0.05). Moreover, plasma P4 concentration in cows treated with linoleic or linolenic acid was high between days 19 and 21 (linoleic acid), or on day 20 (linolenic acid), compared to that of the control cows (saline administration; P < 0.05 or lower). Both linoleic (500 µg/ml) and linolenic (5 and 500 µg/ml) acids stimulated prostaglandin (PG) E2 but inhibited PGF2α production by cultured endometrial tissue (P < 0.01), while P4 production by cultured luteal tissue was not affected. These findings suggest that both linoleic and linolenic acids support luteal P4 production by regulating endometrial PG production and, subsequently, prolonging the duration of the estrous cycle in cows.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate short-term variations of trans fatty acids (TFA) in plasma lipoproteins and ruminal fermentation parameters of non-lactating cows subjected to ruminal pulses of vegetable oils. Three non-lactating, non-pregnant Holstein cows, each with a ruminal cannula, were arranged in a 3 × 3 Latin square design with three-day pulsing periods and four-day washout intervals between treatments. Cows were treated with single ruminal pulses of: (1) control (skimmed milk (SM); 500 mL); (2) soybean oil (SO; 250 g/d in 500 mL of SM) and (3) partially-hydrogenated vegetable oil (PHVO; 250 g/d in 500 mL of SM). Time changes after infusion in TFA contents were only observed for plasma C18:1 trans-4, trans-5 and trans-12, and high-density lipoprotein fraction C18:1 trans-9. After ruminal pulses, concentration of acetate decreased linearly; molar concentrations of propionate and valerate increased linearly; molar concentrations of butyrate and isovalerate changed quadratically and were greater at 1 h than at other times. There was an accumulation of several C18:1 TFA in plasma and lipoproteins, especially on the third day of pulsing. Overall, naturally occurring C18:1 TFA isomers (produced during ruminal biohydrogenation of SO) and preformed TFA (supplied by PHVO) elicited differential TFA partitioning and transport in plasma and lipoproteins.

Abstract
Various supplementations in animal feeding have been investigate in order to enrich food of animal origin with n-3 fatty acids. Although the effects of flaxseeds inclusion in diets for lactating dairy have already been assessed, few studies have focused on this n-3 source supplementation during the transition period. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of flacked flaxseed (200 g/head/day; 2.13% DM) dietary treatment during the dry period on milk yield and quality in the 30 days after calving. In addition, the enterolactone content in plasma (before and after calving) and in milk of cows fed diets supplemented or not with flaxseed was considered. The study demonstrated that the carry-over effect on the milk profile of C18:2, C18:3 n-3, and C20:5 n-3 was significantly higher in flaxseed diet than in the control one at 4th day of lactation. A significant increase of enterolactone on milk from flaxseed fed cows was observed only at 15 sampling day. The quick modification in fatty acid (FA) profile of the milk in the first few days of lactation suggests that the carry over effect from pre-calving flaxseed feeding at this concentration was very short lasting.

Abstract
The aim of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge of reproductive performance of high-yielding dairy cows fed a diet supplemented with n-3 fatty acids (FA s), and to recommend a feeding schedule that can increase the success rate in reproduction. Dietary supplementation with fat, especially FA, has become an accepted strategy for supporting the fertility of high-yielding dairy cows. The two main categories of FA s, unsaturated fatty acids (UFA s) and saturated fatty acids (SFA s), exert distinct effects on reproductive functions, with UFA having a conclusively beneficial impact. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are of particular importance on account of their biological properties. Standard feedstuffs (such as soybean) are rich in n-6 FA s, whereas few feedstuffs contain n-3 FA s. Neither the n-3 nor n-6 PUFA s are synthetized by the animal. Several field experiments have indicated that the recommended schedule of n-3 supplementation should last 160–170 days, from the eighth week before calving to 100 or 120 days postpartum. Supplementation of the diet thus covers the period from the late preantral stage of the follicle, the entire development of the antrum, oocyte ovulation, and fertilization, as well as the development of the preattachment embryo and its implantation. The following effects are among the important beneficial results of supplementation with n-3 FA s: a higher number of antral follicles suitable for ovum pick-up (OPU), larger dominant follicles and corresponding CL, better quality oocytes and embryos, and higher implantation rates resulting from improved uterine environment (e.g., reduced synthesis of luteolytic PGF2α). We conclude that dietary supplementation for high-yielding dairy cows with n-3 FA s supports ovarian functions and helps the embryo to survive in the adverse environment of the reproductive tract of the postpartum cow.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of using different levels of flaxseed in diets on the reproductive performance of estrous-synchronized Baluchi ewes (para 3). Diets contained either basal diet (control) or different levels of extruded flaxseed (2%, 5%, 7%, 10%, and 12%) and were fed from lambing to 60 days after lambing. The ewe estrus cycles were synchronized using controlled internal drug release (CIDR) for 14 days starting from day 16 of fat supplementation. The rams were introduced 24 h after CIDR removal. The ewes fed control diets had the highest mean dry matter intake (1,800&plusmn;35 g) which was declined with the increase of flaxseed levels. The experimental diets exerted no effects of urea concentration in blood plasma. However, plasma glucose concentration was lower (p &lt;0.05) in the ewes fed the control diet and 2% flaxseed, compared to those in other groups. Nonetheless, there was no difference among the ewes fed 5%, 7%, 10%, and 12% flaxseed in terms of plasma glucose concentrations (p &lt;0.05). The ewes fed 2% flaxseed had the highest level of plasma triglyceride concentration among other groups. In addition, the control group had the lowest level of plasma total cholesterol and low-density lipoproteins concentration in comparison to other groups (p &lt;0.05). However, plasma nonesterified fatty acids and &beta;-hydroxybutyrate concentrations were similar among the groups (P&gt;0.05). The mean interval between CIDR removal and the exhibition of estrus ranged from 30 to 40 h with the shortest interval being recorded in the ewes fed 12% flaxseed (p &lt;0.05). The control group had the lowest number of follicles on estrus day among other groups (p &lt;0.05). Furthermore, the ewes fed 10% and 12% flaxseed had the highest ovulation, pregnancy, and lambing rates, compared to other groups (p &lt;0.05). In conclusion, the findings revealed that feeding the ewes with 10% and 12% flaxseed resulted in the improvement of reproductive performance.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding oil supplement on mammary gland development and milk production responses in Holstein cows. Ten multiparous Holstein cows (42.2±9.2 d before calving, 3.25±0.25 body condition score, and 620±35 kg body weight) were randomly assigned to treatments. Treatments were a diet with oil added as palm oil (PO; n=5), or fish oil (FO; n=5) given to cows until 63 d in milk. Milk yield was recorded daily, milk composition (fat, protein, lactose, total solid and somatic cell count) was measured weekly and fatty acid profiles of milk fat were determined at first and last week of the experiment. Samples of mammary tissue were obtained at 7 and 63 d in milk by biopsy gun. Tissue slides were analyzed by Image J software. Results showed that fish oil supplemented diet compared to the palm oil supplemented diet increased milk production after 6 weeks of lactation (P<0.05), content of polyunsaturated fatty acids milk fat (P<0.05) and docosahexaenoic acid (P<0.01). Moreover, n-6:n-3 ratio was decreased by fish oil supplement (P<0.05). Histological studies showed that FO increased the relative percentage of tissue area occupied by epithelial cells as well as a number of total alveoli in each microscopic field (P<0.05). Data suggested that feeding fish oil during the dry period and early lactation could improve development and function of the mammary gland in the dairy cow.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of post AI administration of exogenous
progesterone (P4) or a prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) synthesis
inhibitor agent on serum P4 concentrations and pregnancy per AI (P/AI) in lactating
dairy cows. Eighty lactating cows were randomly allocated to one of four treatment groups:
1) CON (control), received 5 mL of saline solution on d 6 and 14 post AI; 2) IP4 (injection of P
4), received 125 mg of P4 im on d 6 and 14 post AI; 3) CIDR, received a
controlled internal drug release insert containing 1.38g of P4 from d 6 to 20 post
AI; and 4) FM (Flunixin Meglumine), received 0.625 g of Flunixin Meglumine, a nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drug, twice daily on d 15 and 19 post AI. Blood samples were taken on d 0, 6,
14, 17 and 20 post AI to determine P4 concentrations. Transrectal palpation was
performed between 40 and 45 d post AI to determine pregnancy status. All treatment groups (i.e.
IP4, CIDR and FM) resulted in greater serum P4 concentration on d 17 and 20 post
AI compared to CON (P < 0.05). Cows given a CIDR insert had greater concentrations of P
4 on d 17 and 20 than IP4 and FM cows (P < 0.05). However, no significant difference
was found between IP4 and FM groups for serum P4 concentrations. The P/AI was greater
(P < 0.05) in CIDR-treated cows (55%, 11/20) than CON (25%, 5/20), and intermediate in IP4
(40%, 8/20) and FM (35%, 7/20) cows. In summary, treatment with exogenous P4 (i.e.
CIDR and IP4) or FM increased serum P4 concentrations in lactating dairy cows.
However, results suggest that only CIDR administration would improve P/AI.

Abstract
A total of sixteen Holstein dairy cows (35 ± 1.1 kg/d of milk yield) were randomly assigned to consider the effects of feeding omega-3 sources on endometrial endocannabinoids system (ECS) genes expression to understand the effect mechanism of omega-3 on reproductive performances during the early postpartum period to evaluate to what extent can be intervened in reproduction, e.g. via nutrition to improve fertility. Experimental diets were 1) either protected palm oil (control) or 2) extruded linseed (linseed). Cows (n = 16) were fed from calving date to 70 days in milk (DIM). There was no difference between groups (mean ± S.E.M.) in parity (3.0 ± 1.00) or body condition score (BCS) at calving day (3.1 ± 0.25). At 30 DIM, the ovulatory cycles of cows were synchronized using two injections of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) with a 14-day interval. On day 15 of synchronized estrous cycle (d0 = ovulation) uterine endometrial biopsies were collected to evaluate the expression of genes related to ECS (endocannabinoid receptor (CNR2), N-acyl phosphatidylethanolamine phospholipase D (NAPEPLD), fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), N-acylethanolamine acid amidase (NAAA), monoglyceride lipase (MGLL)) and PGF2α. Results showed that dry matter intake and milk yield were not affected by diets. Uterine endometrial NAAA (7.69 fold), and MGLL (1.96 fold) genes expression were greater (P < 0.05) in cows fed linseed compared with control ones. The messenger RNA (mRNA) levels of CNR-2 (4.26 fold), and NAPEPLD (20.0 fold) were decreased (P < 0.05) in animals fed linseed compared to control cows. The expression of mRNA for the FAAH was not influenced by the diets. First service conception rate was greater in cows fed linseed compared to control cows (75 vs. 25%). Pregnancy loss within 32-60 day after artificial insemination (AI) was lower in cows fed linseed compared to control cows (0 vs. 100%). In conclusion these data demonstrated that positive effect of omega-3 on reproduction may act through a mechanism involving the ECS. However, more studies to be undertaken to confirm these results.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate different durations of whole raw soybeans (WS) supplementation during the prepartum period on nutrient digestibility, milk yield and composition, energy balance, blood metabolites, and oocyte and embryo quality of transition cows. Thirty-one Holstein cows were used in a completely randomized design and assigned to 4 experimental groups (G): G90, G60, G30, and G0 (control), supplemented with a diet containing 12% of WS from 90, 60, 30, and 0 d relative to the calving date, respectively. Cows were dried off 60 d before the expected calving date. After parturition, all cows were fed a diet containing 12% of WS until 84 DIM. Blood samples were collected on d -49, -35, -21, -14, -7, 0, 7, 14, 21, 35, and 70 relative to partum. Ovum pick-ups were performed on d 21 ± 3, 42 ± 7, 63 ± 7, and 84 ± 7 of lactation. Different durations of WS supplementation did not affect DMI and apparent total-tract digestibility in either the pre- or postpartum periods. Duration of WS supplementation had no effect on milk yield and composition nor energy balance of cows. However, the duration of WS supplementation had several effects on milk fatty acid (FA) profile of cows, including a linear decrease in concentrations of cis-9 C18:1, unsaturated C18, total monounsaturated, and unsaturated FA. Further, the milk contents of cis-9,cis-12 C18:2 FA, cis-9,trans-11 C18:2 FA, and total polyunsaturated FA were increased when WS were fed to cows from 30 d but not from 60 or 90 d of the expected calving date. The length of WS supplementation in the prepartum period linearly increased blood cholesterol concentration of cows during the prepartum period, but it had no effect on blood glucose and nonesterified FA concentrations in the pre- and postpartum periods. Duration of WS supplementation during the prepartum period increased the average number of grade 2 oocytes, notably in G60, but it had no effect on embryo production and cleavage proportion of early-lactation cows. The duration of WS supplementation in the prepartum period had no effect on milk yield and energy balance of the subsequent lactation, but it altered milk FA profile in early lactation by decreasing unsaturated FA content, notably when starting to supplement WS at 90 and 60 d from the expected calving date. Our results also showed that the duration of WS supplementation during the prepartum period does not improve oocyte quality in the subsequent lactation of cows.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective was to determine the effect of prepartum diets supplemented with rolled canola seed (high in oleic acid) or sunflower seed (high in linoleic acid) on luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatility and gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced LH release during early postpartum. METHODS Thirty-one pregnant Holstein cows, blocked by body condition score, parity and expected calving date, were assigned to 1 of 3 prepartum diets supplemented with 8 % rolled canola or sunflower seed, or no oilseed (control) during the last 35 d of gestation. Blood samples were collected at Weeks (wk)-3, 0, +1 and +2, relative to calving, to determine non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), Beta-hydroxy butyric acid (BHBA) and glucose. Additional blood samples were collected during wk1 (n = 5 per treatment) or wk2 (n = 5 or 6 per treatment), for 6 h, to measure LH pulsatility; thereafter, 100 mcg GnRH was administrated i.m., and blood was sampled for 4 h more, to measure GnRH-induced LH release. RESULTS Dietary treatment did not affect prepartum energy balance, but cows fed the control diet were in a deeper state of negative energy balance during wk2, than those fed canola (P = 0.03) or sunflower (P = 0.01). Prepartum diets did not influence the mean plasma concentration of BHBA and glucose. However, NEFA concentration during wk2 was greater in control cows than those fed sunflower (P = 0.03) or canola (P = 0.07). Prepartum diets did not affect LH pulsatility (i.e. mean, minimum, maximum concentration, pulse frequency, and amplitude during wk1 and 2). GnRH-induced LH release did not differ among dietary treatments during wk1 but the mean GnRH-induced LH release during wk2 was either greater (P = 0.02) and tended to be greater (P = 0.09) in control cows than in those fed canola and sunflower, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Prepartum diets did not affect LH pulsatility and GnRH-induced LH release during the first week postpartum, but cows fed a diet supplemented with oilseeds high in oleic or linoleic acid released less LH than control cows, in response to an exogenous GnRH challenge during the second week postpartum.

Abstract
This study was done to investigate the effect of feeding linseed on blood metabolites, incidence of cystic follicles, resumption of postpartum ovarian cyclicity, pregnancy rate, milk production, and composition in fresh Holstein dairy cows. A total of 399 dairy cows were assigned randomly to 2 diets. Diets contained either protected palm oil (CON) or extruded linseed (LIN) and were fed from calving to d 40 postpartum. Ovaries of each cow were examined on d 10, 20, 30, and 40 after parturition (parturition=d 0) by transrectal ultrasonography to determine follicular development, ovarian disorders, and cyclicity. Blood samples were collected at 14-d intervals for 6 wk starting on the day of parturition to determine plasma concentrations of glucose, β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA), nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), and blood urea N (BUN). Results showed plasma glucose concentration was affected by the diets and was greater in the LIN treatment, but BHBA, NEFA, and BUN concentrations were similar among treatments. Dietary treatments had no significant effect on milk production and composition except milk fat percentage that significantly decreased in cows fed LIN (3.55%) compared with those fed with CON (4.17%). Plasma progesterone concentrations were greater in LIN treatment than CON treatment (1.31±0.09 vs. 0.87±0.09) at early postpartum. The resumption of cyclicity and onset of estrus were influenced by treatments and reduced by 7 d in LIN treatment compared with CON treatment. Cows fed diets enriched in LIN fatty acids had a lesser incidence of cystic follicles. Treatments did not differ significantly in terms of the number of days open, number of services per pregnancy, and pregnancy rate. In conclusion, feeding linseed immediately after parturition decreased milk fat and incidence of cystic follicles, increased progesterone concentrations early postpartum, and caused earlier resumption of cyclicity but did not affect pregnancy rate.
