Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate serum and fecal trace element and mineral levels in Red Steppe dairy cows with different daily milk yields during the transition from feedlot to pasture. Serum and fecal trace element and mineral levels were assessed using the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The obtained data demonstrate that serum Ca, Mg, K, and Na levels increased significantly in the pasture period, and this increase is more profound in cows with higher milk yield. In turn, circulating levels of B, Co, Cr, Fe, I, and Se significantly decreased in the pasture period. Despite the lack of group differences in the feedlot period, serum B, Cr, and Fe levels in the pasture period were higher in cows with higher milk yield. In turn, circulating Co and I concentrations were higher in the cows with lower milk yield. Finally, the levels of toxic trace elements in the pasture period were found to be higher in cows with lower milk productivity. Discriminant analysis demonstrated that the groups of cows with different milk productivity were clearly discriminated only in the pasture period. Despite a significant change in fecal trace element and mineral content upon transition from feedlot to pasture, only minor group differences between cows with different daily milk yields were observed. These findings demonstrate that despite the lack of differences in dietary trace element and mineral intake, cows with different milk productivity are characterized by distinct patterns of serum trace element and mineral content.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of serum calcium (Ca) status in the early postpartum period on the quantity and quality of colostrum, milk production, and the health of Holstein dams and their calves. One hundred multiparous Holstein cows were enrolled in this study. To determine serum Ca status, blood samples were taken at 1 and 4 days in milk (DIM). Cows were categorized into 1 of 4 groups based on their serum Ca concentrations: normocalcemic (CON; Ca >1.87 at 1 DIM and >2.10 mmol/L at 4 DIM, n = 36), transient SCH (TSCH; Ca ≤1.87 at 1 DIM and >2.10 mmol/L at 4 DIM, n = 14), persistent SCH (PSCH; Ca ≤1.87 at 1 DIM and ≤2.10 mmol/L at 4 DIM, n = 15), or delayed SCH (DSCH; Ca >1.87 at 1 DIM and ≤2.10 mmol/L at 4 DIM, n = 35). The ROC curve was utilized to determine the optimal cut-off value for serum total Ca, maximizing both sensitivity and specificity in predicting metritis. Metabolic disorders such as dystocia, retained placenta, and culling within 60 DIM were not affected by serum Ca status in the early postpartum period (P > 0.10). However, the incidences of metritis and endometritis were different based on the serum Ca status of the cows. The PSCH cows had a higher incidence of metritis than the CON cows (P = 0.05). Also, the DSCH cows tended to have an increased risk of metritis than the CON cows (P = 0.09). However, metritis incidence in the TSCH and CON cows was similar (P = 0.83). Cows with PSCH (P = 0.07) and DSCH (P = 0.10) tended to be at a higher risk for endometritis than the CON cows. But, the incidence of endometritis in the TSCH and CON cows was not different (P = 0.50). The TSCH cows had higher milk yield than the PSCH and DSCH cows (P = 0.05). However, milk yield was not different between the TSCH and CON cows and the PSCH and DSCH and CON cows. The serum Ca status of cows had no effect on colostrum volume and its quality, age and weight of weaning, and average daily gain of calves (P > 0.10). The proportion of calves experiencing failure of passive transfer (FPT) was greater in the PSCH group than in the CON group (P = 0.03). Also, the FPT tended to be higher in the DSCH calves compared to the CON calves (P = 0.10). However, the FPT in the TSCH and CON calves was not different (P = 0.83). The incidence of diarrhea tended to be higher in the PSCH and DSCH calves compared to the CON calves (P = 0.10). However, diarrhea incidence between the TSCH and CON calves was similar (P = 0.97). Overall, the findings of this study suggest that cows with TSCH showed better adaptation to lactation, experienced a lower occurrence of diseases and produced higher milk compared to PSCH and DSCH cows. Furthermore, despite the similar quantity and quality of colostrum across all groups, the PSCH and DSCH groups displayed a greater proportion of calves experiencing FPT and diarrhea in comparison to the TSCH group.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the potential effect of difructose anhydride III (DFAIII) on calcemia, magnesemia, and milking performance in dairy cows. A total of 66 multiparous Holstein cows in late pregnancy (gestation days, mean ± SD = 253.8 ± 2.13 d) were blocked according to their expected calving date and randomly assigned to either receiving no supplementation (control) or receiving 40 g/d of DFAIII (DFA) between -14 and +7 d relative to calving following a complete randomized block design. Cows in the control group received 640 g/d of a pellet containing no DFAIII, whereas DFA cows received the same pellet but containing 6.25% DFAIII. Pellets of each treatment were top-dressed on a daily basis while cows were dry and were fed via an automatic feeding system twice daily (320 g each feeding) during milking. Dry cows were fed once a day, whereas lactating cows were fed twice daily. Dry matter intake was individually monitored on a daily basis. Cows were milked twice daily and milk production and milk protein and fat contents recorded at every milking. Cows were kept on the study until they reached 21 d postpartum. Cows were weighed at dry-off (∼45 d before study enrollment) and twice daily after calving at the exit of the milking parlor. Cows were blood sampled for subsequent determination of serum Ca and Mg concentrations 3 d before the expected calving date and at 6, 12, 24, and 48 h and 7 and 14 d after calving. We found no differences in DMI before calving, but DFA cows consumed more feed than control cows at ∼15 DIM. All cows lost BW after calving, but DFA cows lost slightly less BW during the first 5 DIM than control cows. Cows on DFAIII produced more milk at ∼10 DIM compared with control cows, and DFAIII cows produced more milk protein than control cows 3 d after calving. Serum Ca concentrations were not affected by DFAIII supplementation; however, serum Mg concentrations at 6, 12, and 24 h after calving were greater in DFA than in control cows. In all, DFAIII did not affect postpartum calcemia but improved magnesemia between 6 and 24 h after calving. Milk production in DFA cows was improved around 10 d after calving and milk protein yield after 3 d postpartum compared with control cows. The mechanism leading to increased Mg availability is not clear and warrants further research.

Abstract
Consequences of postpartum low blood calcium (Ca) concentration are still under study and literature describing this condition in Jersey cows is scarce. A prospective cohort study was conducted to evaluate the association of low serum Ca concentration shortly after calving with milk and energy-corrected milk yields, somatic cell count linear score, and pregnancy to first service and within 150 d in milk in multiparous Jersey cows from 2 commercial herds. Blood samples for serum Ca determination were collected on average at 3 h 10 min postpartum from 352 multiparous Jersey cows. Productive data up to the 10th monthly test were obtained from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association and reproductive data were obtained from herd records. Multiple linear, log-binomial, and Cox's proportional hazards regressions were used to evaluate the association of low serum Ca concentration with productive and reproductive outcomes. Serum Ca concentration ≤2.18 mmol/L was associated with 1.43 and 1.85 kg/d more milk and energy-corrected milk. However, lower serum Ca concentrations were associated with a 0.28-unit-higher somatic cell count linear score per monthly test (Ca ≤2.00 mmol/L), and decreased pregnancy risk at first service (risk ratio = 0.64; Ca ≤1.94 mmol/L) and hazard of pregnancy within 150 d in milk (hazard ratio = 0.40; Ca ≤1.90 mmol/L). The present study is based on a convenience sample of multiparous Jersey cows from 2 commercial herds; further research including more herds and additional blood Ca determinations is needed to describe postpartum blood Ca dynamics and its association with productive and reproductive outcomes for the Jersey breed.

Abstract
Supplementation of Ca products to cows after calving is common in calving protocols. This study evaluated the effect of a Ca-energy drink voluntarily consumed on milk yield and composition, odds to reach a next lactation, and calving interval. This prospective randomized study included a blinded placebo and was conducted in 10 commercial dairy farms that included 504 Holstein dairy cows. Cows were blocked within farm by calving sequence and parity (primiparous or multiparous). Within each block of 2 animals, cows were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 treatments: a Ca-energy supplement drink (CAE, n = 255) providing 45 g of Ca and other components (dextrose, lactose, protein, fat, other minerals and vitamins), a placebo (i.e., 100 g of cellulose and 20 g of dextrose; CON, n = 249), both strictly offered to the animals for voluntary consumption. Treatments were offered mixed in 20 L of water within 3 h after calving. Milk data were analyzed using 2 approaches. The first, most classical, evaluated the effect of the treatments on observed milk data, whereas the second approach evaluated the effect on milk residuals (i.e., the difference between observed milk data and a prediction made by a herd test-day model). Eighty-one percent of the CAE cows fully consumed the treatment, whereas only 50% of CON cows did. No differences were detected for observed milk yield, nor for composition in multiparous cows. The only production effect observed on multiparous cows was a treatment by time interaction for milk fat yield, reflecting greater yield for CAE cows between 100 and 150 d in milk only. However, primiparous cows receiving CAE had increased milk (+0.8 kg/d) and component yields (i.e., +40 g/d of protein) compared with CON cows. These effects were more evident when milk and milk components residuals data were analyzed (i.e., +1.5 kg/d for milk yield and +57 g/d of protein). This was achieved with a herd test-day model that allowed milk and milk components data to be adjusted for environmental and genetic factors (i.e., farm effect, time effect, age at calving, parity, stage of lactation, breeding value). The treatment had no effect on the probability of reaching the next lactation (i.e., 72% of CAE cows had a next calving against 69% in CON). Primiparous cows receiving CAE had a longer calving interval compared with CON cows. At 400 d after the application of the treatment, 65% of CAE primiparous cows had a next calving, whereas 81% of CON primiparous cows had calved already. The supplementation of the tested oral Ca-energy solution at calving did not increase the probability to reach a next lactation for neither primiparous or multiparous, but positively influenced milk yield and milk component yields for primiparous.

Abstract
This narrative literature review summarizes findings regarding the associations of clinical and subclinical hypocalcemia with postpartum health, reproduction, and milk production. To better understand the effects of hypocalcemia, we reviewed clinical and subclinical presentations of the condition and the dynamics of blood Ca concentration in the early postpartum period. We summarize and discuss the associations between hypocalcemia and performance of dairy cows. Up to 50% of dairy cows suffer from at least one disease event in the transition period. The important roles of calcium in muscle contraction and immune function make it a key component of metabolism, inflammation, and defense against infection. Although the effect of clinical hypocalcemia (milk fever) on health and performance is clear, the definition of subclinical hypocalcemia (SCH) and its consequences for health and performance are still ambiguous. Differences in study designs, sampling protocols, Ca concentration thresholds, and sample sizes that may be underpowered for health and reproduction outcomes lead to inconsistent conclusions on the effects of SCH. On current evidence, classification of SCH should be based on at least 2 measurements of blood calcium, using cutpoints supported with relevant data, which may vary depending on the outcome of interest. Arbitrary or poorly supported interpretative thresholds for blood Ca concentrations should be abandoned. Transient SCH appears to be associated with greater milk yield, whereas SCH that is present several days after calving is associated with lesser production and greater disease risk. However, when blood calcium is measured days after calving, primary effects of calcium metabolism may be confounded by feed intake, inflammation, or disease, which might either contribute to or be a consequence of hypocalcemia. Additional research is needed to refine sampling schemes to classify SCH, and to better inform the goals and means of prevention of SCH.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of postpartum oral calcium supplementation on milk yield, energy-corrected milk yield, milk fat concentration, milk protein concentration, and somatic cell count linear score across the first 3 monthly tests postpartum, peak milk yield, risk of pregnancy at first service, and hazard of pregnancy by 150 d in milk on 1,129 multiparous Jersey and Jersey × Holstein crossbreed cows from 2 commercial dairies. After calving, cows were systematically assigned to control (no oral calcium supplementation; n = 567) or oral calcium supplementation at 0 and 1 d in milk (oral Ca; 50 to 60 g of calcium as boluses; n = 562). Monthly test milk yield, composition, and somatic cell count information was obtained from the Dairy Herd Improvement Association. Herd records were used for reproductive data. Statistical analysis was conducted using generalized multiple linear, Poisson, and Cox's hazard regressions. Treatment effects were evaluated considering cow-level information available at parturition (parity, breed, previous lactation milk yield, previous lactation length, dry period length, gestation length, body condition, and locomotion score at calving, calving ease, and calf sex). In addition, for a subset of cows serum calcium concentration before treatment administration was evaluated (n = 756). Overall, oral calcium supplementation did not affect the evaluated productive and reproductive variables. However, effects conditional to previous lactation length and calving locomotion score were observed. Milk yield and energy-corrected milk yield across the first 3 monthly tests were 1.8 kg/d higher for supplemented cows with a previous lactation length within the fourth quartile, compared with control cows on the same quartile. Energy-corrected milk yield tended to be 1.1 kg/d lower for supplemented cows with a previous lactation length within the first quartile, compared with control counterparts. Peak milk yield tended to be 1.6 kg higher for supplemented cows with a calving locomotion score ≥2, compared with control cows with the same locomotion score. Treatment effects were not conditional to serum calcium concentration before treatment administration. Our results suggest that postpartum oral calcium supplementation effects are conditional to cow-level factors such as previous lactation length and calving locomotion score in multiparous Jersey and Jersey × Holstein crossbreed cows.

Abstract
Dairy cows suffer blood Ca losses as lactation begins and might be affected by hypocalcemia in its clinical (total serum Ca concentration <1.50 mM) or subclinical form (total serum Ca concentration ≤2.14 mM). Several studies have suggested that hypocalcemia is associated with different health problems of the cow but results from different studies are not consistent. The objective of this study was to assess potential associations between subclinical hypocalcemia (SCHC) and displaced abomasum, intramammary infections, metritis, retained placenta, and ketosis. Also, the associations between SCHC and milk yield and reproductive function were evaluated. After discarding cows (32) with clinical hypocalcemia, a total of 764 cows from 6 different commercial farms were enrolled in this study. Blood samples were collected at 24 to 48 h postcalving and analyzed for total Ca concentration. Odds ratios of the different afflictions potentially associated with SCHC were calculated. Seventy-eight percent of the analyzed cows incurred SCHC. The occurrence of displaced abomasum, ketosis, retained placenta, and metritis was 3.7, 5.5, 3.4, and 4.3 times more likely, respectively, in cows that had SCHC than in cows with normocalcemia. Furthermore, the risk of incurring retained placenta or metritis increased in multiparous cows as serum Ca concentrations decreased compared with that in primiparous cows. Normocalcemic cows, independent of parity, were more likely to show their first estrus sooner after calving than SCHC cows, but no correlation was found between SCHC and other reproductive parameters. Different serum Ca concentration cutoffs were identified for several postpartum afflictions (≤1.93, ≤2.05, ≤2.05, and ≤2.10 mM for ketosis, retained placenta, metritis, and displaced abomasum, respectively). In conclusion, SCHC, defined as serum Ca ≤2.14 mM, is a frequent illness affecting the majority of the dairy cows with important repercussions on health. However, if SCHC were to be used to predict postpartum disease, different serum Ca cutoff points are likely to be needed because best predictive cutoff values varied among postpartum ketosis, displaced abomasum, retained placenta, and metritis.

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to describe the associations of subclinical hypocalcemia with milk yield, and feeding, drinking, and resting behavior during the period around calving. Blood was sampled within 24h of calving and analyzed for serum total calcium. Fifteen Holstein dairy cows were classified as having subclinical hypocalcemia (serum calcium concentration ≤ 1.8 mmol/L, without clinical milk fever) and were matched with 15 control cows (serum calcium concentration >1.8 mmol/L) based on parity and presence of other diseases. Daily feeding and drinking behavior were monitored using an electronic feeding system (Insentec, BV, Marknesse, the Netherlands) and summarized by week relative to calving (wk -3, -2, -1, +1, +2, and +3). Standing behavior was monitored from 7 d before until 7 d after calving using dataloggers. Daily milk yields were obtained for all cows up to 280 d in milk (DIM). These data were summarized by week for the first 4 wk of lactation to assess short-term differences in milk yield, and were summarized into 4-wk periods to assess long-term (280 DIM) differences in milk yield between groups. Cows with subclinical hypocalcemia produced, on average, 5.7 kg/d more milk during wk 2, 3, and 4 compared with control cows; however, only subclinically hypocalcemic cows in their third lactation sustained greater milk yields throughout 280 DIM. Despite greater milk yield during the weeks following calving, cows with subclinical hypocalcemia did not consume more water after calving and tended to have greater dry matter intake only during wk 2. However, these animals made fewer visits to the water bins during the first 2 wk after calving and tended to make fewer visits to the feed bins during wk 1 and 3, suggesting that they used these resources more efficiently. Dry matter intake was, on average, 1.7 kg/d greater during wk -2 and -1 among cows subsequently diagnosed with subclinical hypocalcemia compared with control cows but neither group was lactating during this period. Cows with subclinical hypocalcemia stood for 2.6h longer during the 24-h period before parturition, which may suggest these animals experience increased discomfort at calving; these cows spent 2.7h less time standing during d +1. Although milk yield was greater among cows with subclinical hypocalcemia, this study controlled for the confounding effects of disease incidence; these results do not refute previous research that associates subclinical hypocalcemia with an increased risk for health disorders. The mechanisms by which subclinical hypocalcemia is associated with behavior and production require further investigation.
