Abstract
Plastic additives such as the antioxidant 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol (2,4-DTBP) have been widely detected in aquatic environments, over a wide range of concentrations reaching 300 μg/L in surface water, potentially threatening the health of aquatic organisms and ecosystems. However, knowledge of the specific effects of 2,4-DTBP on aquatic vertebrates is still limited. In this study, adult zebrafish were exposed to different concentrations of 2,4-DTBP (0, 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L) for 21 days in the laboratory. The amplicon sequencing results indicated that the diversity and composition of the zebrafish gut microbiota were significantly changed by 2,4-DTBP, with a shift in the dominant flora to more pathogenic genera. Exposure to 2,4-DTBP at 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L significantly increased the body weight and length of zebrafish, suggesting a biological stress response. Structural assembly defects were also observed in the intestinal tissues of zebrafish exposed to 2,4-DTBP, including autolysis of intestinal villi, adhesions and epithelial detachment of intestinal villi, as well as inflammation. The transcriptional expression of some genes showed that 2,4-DTBP adversely affected protein digestion and absorption, glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism. These results are consistent with the PICRUSt2 functional prediction analysis of intestinal microbiota of zebrafish exposed to 2,4-DTBP. This study improves our understanding of the effects of 2,4-DTBP on the health of aquatic vertebrates and ecosystems.

Abstract
Perforated bowel and adhesive intestinal obstruction are common indications for emergency surgical intervention in a preterm neonate. The initial approach to managing perforation involves either peritoneal drain insertion or formal laparotomy. Once a neonate presents with complete bowel obstruction, prompt abdominal exploration becomes crucial. One prevalent cause of bowel obstruction in this population is adhesions resulting from previous surgeries. This report details the case of a preterm, extremely low birth weight neonate experiencing pneumoperitoneum, initially managed with an intraperitoneal drain. Despite temporary improvement, the infant developed recurrent pneumoperitoneum, necessitating formal exploratory laparotomy. Approximately one month post-surgery, the baby encountered complete bowel obstruction due to adhesive intestinal obstruction, requiring a second exploratory laparotomy. The child survived both surgical interventions and is thriving at follow-up. Our findings suggest that in select cases, intraperitoneal drain placement may suffice. However, there is a need for further research to improve the suspicion and diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum perforations in neonates. Additionally, vigilant assessment and timely intervention for adhesive intestinal obstruction can enhance bowel salvage outcomes.

Abstract
Preventing anastomotic leakage (AL) and postoperative adhesions after gastrointestinal surgery is crucial for ensuring a favorable surgical prognosis. However, AL prevention using tissue adhesives can unintentionally lead to undesirable adhesion formation, while anti-adhesive agents may interfere with wound healing and contribute to AL. In this study, we have developed a double-layer patch, consisting of an adhesive layer on one side, utilizing gallic acid-conjugated chitosan (CHI-G), and an anti-adhesive layer on the opposite side, employing crosslinked hyaluronic acid (cHA). These CHI-G/cHA double-layer adhesives significantly prevented AL by forming physical barriers of CHI-G and reduced post-surgical adhesion at the anastomosis sites by the anti-adhesive layers of cHA. The bursting pressure (161.1 ± 21.6 mmHg) of double-layer adhesives-applied rat intestine at postoperative day 21 was far higher than those of the control (129.4 ± 5.7 mmHg) and the commercial anti-adhesives-applied group (120.8 ± 5.2 mmHg). In addition, adhesion score of double-layer adhesives-applied rat intestine was 3.6 ± 0.3 at postoperative day 21, which was similar to that of the commercial anti-adhesives-applied group (3.6 ± 0.3) and lower than that of the control group (4.9 ± 0.5). These findings indicate that the double-layer patch (CHI-G/cHA) has the potential to effectively prevent both postoperative adhesions and anastomotic leakage, offering a promising solution for gastrointestinal surgery.

Abstract
Gallstone ileus is a true mechanical intestinal obstruction. It is caused by gallstone impaction in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract after eroding and passing through a bilioenteric fistula. Gallstones are frequently impacted in the terminal ileum. Computed tomography (CT) imaging is diagnostic and shows specific findings of dilated small bowel loops suggesting small bowel obstruction, pneumobilia, and impacted gallstone in the small bowel. Favorable outcome is achieved by having strong clinical suspicion, timely diagnosis, preoperative resuscitation, and early surgical intervention. The three available surgical procedures to relieve gallstone ileus are entrolithotomy alone; one-stage procedure of enterolithotomy, cholecystectomy, and fistula closure; or two-stage procedure of enterolithotomy followed by cholecystectomy. This article outlines the clinical presentation, diagnosis, resuscitation, and different surgical interventions of patients with gallstone ileus.

Abstract
Peritoneal adhesions are an unwanted and frequent event following abdominal surgery, with a response rate that can reach 100%. The adhesions can be symptomatic, becoming a source of pain and discomfort for the patient, or asymptomatic, with possible chronic or acute visceral dysfunction. The article reviews what the diagnostic strategies are and discusses what could be the causes that lead to chronic pain in the presence of adhesions. The text reports the knowledge of the literature on the manual treatment of adhesions and illustrates possible symptoms that are not easily recognized by the clinician. To conclude, the article proposes osteopathic manual approaches derived from clinical experience and from what has been explained about the formation of peritoneal adhesions. Research must make further efforts to identify not only the causes triggering the formation of peritoneal neogenesis but also seek the most appropriate non-invasive treatments to help the patient.
