The Effect of Consumption of Soy Foods on the Blood Lipid Profile of Women: A Pilot Study from Qwa-Qwa

Soy Isoflavones Inhibit Endothelial Cell Dysfunction and Prevent Cardiovascular Disease

Soybeans are among the most popular foods worldwide, and intake of soy-containing foods has been associated with many health benefits in part because of it structure similar to estrogen. Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated that soy consumption improves serum profiles of hypercholesterolemic patients. Several studies have also indicated an inverse relationship between the consumption of soy isoflavones and the incidence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Soy is a rich dietary source of isoflavones. The main soy isoflavones are daidzein and genistein; equol, another isoflavone and a major intestinal bacterial metabolite of daidzein, is generated by enterobacterial effects. Many isoflavones have antioxidative effects and anti-inflammatory actions, as well as induce nitric oxide production to maintain a healthy endothelium and prevent endothelial cell dysfunction. These effects may limit the development of atherosclerosis and CVD and restore healthy endothelial function in altered endothelia. Although the evidence supporting the benefits of soy isoflavones in CVD prevention continues to increase, the association between soy isoflavones and disease is not fully understood. This review summarized recent progress in identifying the preventive mechanisms of action of dietary soybean isoflavones on vascular endothelial cells. Furthermore, it describes the beneficial roles that these isoflavones may have on endothelial dysfunction-related atherosclerosis.

Biological Effect of Soy Isoflavones in the Prevention of Civilization Diseases

Scientific advancements in recent years have shed new light on the relationship between diet and human health. Nutrients play an important role in the prevention of many civilization diseases, such as osteoporosis, type II diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and cardiovascular diseases. The biological activity of natural plant components allows their use in the treatment of various diseases, especially civilization diseases, to be speculated. Special attention is paid to phenolic compounds that have numerous health-promoting properties. Isoflavones, phenolic compounds, are commonly found in legumes, especially in soybeans. Their structural similarity to 17-β-estradiol (E2), the main female sex hormone, allows them to induce estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects by binding to estrogen receptors, and their consumption has been associated with a decreased risk of hormone-related cancers. In addition, numerous epidemiological studies and related meta-analyses suggest that soy consumption may be associated with a lower incidence of certain diseases. However, there are some doubts about the potential effects on health, such as the effectiveness of cardiovascular risk reduction or breast cancer-promoting properties. The purpose of this review is to present the current knowledge on the potential effects of soy isoflavone consumption with regard to civilization diseases.

Comparative analysis of the factors contributing to sustainability of a food and nutrition intervention programme: Two case studies from South Africa

Sustainability of health interventions is a consistent and ongoing issue in Africa. Understanding key aspects of sustainable interventions provides the necessary methods for success. This research evaluates a nutrition intervention implemented in two peri-urban communities in the Free State and Gauteng province in South Africa (SA) respectively. A case study approach was employed using cross-case study analyses, including triangular data collection (empirical research through surveys of respondents; qualitative data collection through researcher journals, diaries, communications and photographs; and research team reflections). The information from these case studies is organized according to a framework from the United States (US) Office of Organizational Health (OAH) to evaluate the sustainability of intervention programmes. All eight of the OAH criteria were met in the Free State community and supported the importance of these key factors for sustainability compared to only three in the Gauteng community. The OAH framework provided a compelling rationale for the relative success of the intervention and clearly showed the Free State project was sustainable. The Gauteng project was not sustainable. Planned interventions should devote significant effort and time towards ensuring sustainability. The OAH guidelines provide key steps that the research shows is relevant to the South African context.

Interaction of Soybean 7S Globulin Peptide with Cell Membrane Model via Isothermal Titration Calorimetry, Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation, and Langmuir Monolayer Study

To understand the underlying molecular mechanism of the cholesterol-lowering effect of soybean 7S globulins, the interactions of their pepsin-released peptides (7S-peptides) with cell membrane models consisting of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), and cholesterol (CHOL) were systematically studied. The results showed that 7S-peptides were bound to DPPC/DOPC/CHOL liposomes mainly through van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonds, and the presence of higher CHOL concentrations enhanced the binding affinity (e.g., DPPC/DOPC/CHOL = 1:1:0, binding ratio = 0.114; DPPC/DOPC/CHOL = 1:1:1, binding ratio = 2.02). Compression isotherms indicated that the incorporation of 7S-peptides increased the DPPC/DOPC/CHOL monolayer fluidity and the lipid raft size. The presence of CHOL accelerated the 7S-peptide accumulation on lipid rafts, which could serve as platforms for peptides to develop into β-sheet rich structures. These results allow us to hypothesize that 7S-peptides may indirectly influence membrane protein functions via altering the membrane organization in the enterocytes.

Effects of Soy Flour Fortified Bread Consumption on Cardiovascular Risk Factors According to APOE Genotypes in Overweight and Obese Adult Women: A Cross-over Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Recent studies suggest that inclusion of soy product in the diet may have favorable effects on relief of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and risk factors. These effects might be associated with the presence of specific polymorphism in gene. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of consumption of soy flour fortified bread on cardiovascular risk factors in overweight and obese women according to APOE genotype. In a randomized cross-over clinical trial 30 overweight and obese women received a mild weight loss diet and assigned to a regular diet and a soy bread diet, each for 6 weeks and a washout period for 20 days. Subjects in the soy bread diet were asked to replace 120 grams of their daily usual bread intake with equal amount of soy bread. No significant effects of soy bread on serum lipid, systolic blood pressure and anthropometric indices were observed compared to the regular diet (p > 0.05). For diastolic blood pressure (DBP), comparison of mean differences between two groups showed a marginally significant effect of soy bread (p = 0.06). Compared to regular diet, soy bread had a significant effect on DBP in E2 genotype group (ε2/ε2) (p = 0.03). Having ε2 allele may influences responses of CVD risk factor to soy bread consumption. However more nutrigenetic studies are required.
