A series of bis-(propyl-imidazoliylidene)-napthalenediimide (NDI) complexes of rhodium and iridium showed effective redox-switching properties, despite the electronic disconnection between the NDI moiety and the metal centres.

Smart N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands in Catalysis

It is well-recognized that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have provided a new dimension to the design of homogeneous catalysts. Part of the success of this type of ligands resides in the limitless access to a variety of topologies with tuned electronic properties, but also in the ability of a family of NHCs that are able to adapt their properties to the specific requirements of individual catalytic transformations. The term "smart" is used here to refer to switchable, multifunctional, adaptable, or tunable ligands and, in general, to all those ligands that are able to modify their steric or electronic properties to fulfill the requirements of a defined catalytic reaction. The purpose of this review is to comprehensively describe all types of smart NHC ligands by focusing attention on the catalytically relevant ligand-based reactivity.

Mono and dimetallic pyrene-imidazolylidene complexes of iridium(iii) for the deuteration of organic substrates and the C–C coupling of alcohols

Two pyrene-NHC complexes of Ir(iii) and one di-iridium(iii) complex with a pyrene-di-NHC ligand have been prepared and characterized. Their catalytic activity in the deuteration of organic substrates, and in the β-alkylation of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols is described.

Ruthenium and osmium complexes of hemilabile chiral monophosphinite ligands derived from 1D-pinitol or 1D-chiro-inositol as catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation reactions

The monophosphinite ligands, 1D-1,2;5,6-di-O-cyclopentylidene-3-O-methyl-4-O-diphenylphosphino-chiro-inositol (D-P1), 1D-1,2;5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-3-O-methyl-4-O-diphenylphosphino-chiro-inositol (D-P2), 1D-1,2;5,6-di-O-cyclohexylidene-3-O-methyl-4-O-diphenylphosphino-chiro-inositol (D-P3), and 1D-1,2;5,6-di-O-cyclopentylidene-3-O-ethyl-4-O-diphenylphosphino-chiro-inositol (D-P4), can be conveniently prepared from the chiral natural products 1D-pinitol or 1D-chiro-inositol. On treatment of toluene solutions of RuCl2(PPh3)3 with two mole equivalents of the ligands D-PY (Y = 1-4) the complexes RuCl2(D-P1)2 (1), RuCl2(D-P2)2 (4), RuCl2(D-P3)2 (5), or RuCl2(D-P4)2 (6), respectively, are formed. Similarly, treatment of OsCl2(PPh3)3 with D-P1 gives OsCl2(D-P1)2 (7). The single crystal X-ray structure determination of 1 reveals that each D-P1 ligand coordinates to ruthenium through phosphorus and the oxygen atom of the methoxyl group. Treatment of 1 with excess LiBr or LiI results in metathesis of the chloride ligands and RuBr2(D-P1)2 (2) or RuI2(D-P1)2 (3), respectively, are formed. Exposure of a solution of 1 to carbon monoxide results in the very rapid formation of RuCl2(CO)2(D-P1)2 (8), thereby demonstrating the ease with which the oxygen donors are displaced from the metal and hence the hemilabile nature of the two bidentate D-P1 ligands in 1. Preliminary studies indicate that 1-7 act as catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation reactions of acetophenone and 3-quinuclidinone to give the corresponding alcohols in generally high conversions but low enantiomeric excesses.

Variable coordination behaviour of pyrazole-containing N,P and N,P(O) ligands towards palladium(ii)

Three bidentate, mixed-donor ligands based on a triphenylphosphine unit bearing a pyrazole group in the ortho-position of one phenyl ring have been synthesised; the N,P ligand [2-(3-pyrazolyl)phenyl]diphenylphosphine pzphos has been synthesised and transformed into new N,P(O) and N,P(S) derivatives, [2-(3-pyrazolyl)phenyl]diphenylphosphine oxide pzphos(O) and [2-(3-pyrazolyl)phenyl]diphenylphosphine sulfide pzphos(S), respectively. The coordination chemistry of pzphos and pzphos(O) towards palladium(II) has been investigated. Depending on the ligand to metal molar ratio employed in the reactions of palladium(II) with pzphos, either the 1 : 1 chelate [Pd(pzphos)Cl2] 1a or the 2 : 1 N,P chelate [Pd(pzphos)2]Cl2 1b was obtained. 1b contains two six-membered chelate rings in which the chlorides have been displaced from the inner coordination sphere of palladium. Exchange of the chloride anions in 1b for perchlorate anions was achieved using AgClO4 to give [Pd(pzphos)2][ClO4]2 1c. Reaction of pzphos(O) under the same conditions forms the 2 : 1 adduct [Pd(pzphos(O))2Cl2] 2b regardless of the metal to ligand ratio or the order of addition of reactants. Unlike the N,P chelate 1b, the N,P(O) ligands in complex 2b bind in a monodentate fashion through the N-donor atoms of the pyrazole rings. Abstraction of the chloro ligands in compound 2b using AgClO4 gave the 2 : 1 N,P(O) chelate [Pd{pzphos(O)}2][ClO4]2 2c, in which entropically unfavourable 7-membered chelate rings are formed. X-Ray diffraction has been used to confirm the solid-state structures of the pzphos(O) ligand and the complexes 1b, 1c, 2b and 2c.
