Haptic coordination: Squeezing a vibrating stress ball decreases anxiety and arousal

We evaluated the effect of haptic coordination on anxiety and arousal. Participants looked at a stressful or calming image and then repeatedly squeezed a vibrating stress ball for 20 s. Using a pre-post paradigm with a control group, we showed that squeezing the vibrating ball reduced anxiety and arousal, as assessed by the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and electrodermal activity, respectively. The stability of haptic coordination was manipulated by varying the detuning between the spontaneous squeezing frequency and the intrinsic frequency of ball vibration. Coordination stability affected arousal and stress affected stability. The data were discussed in the light of Kahneman's attentional resource-sharing model.

Analysis of the Contact Area for Three Types of Upper Limb Strikes

Performance in strike combat sports is mostly evaluated through the values of the net force, acceleration, or speed to improve efficient training procedures and/or to assess the injury. There are limited data on the upper limb striking area, which can be a useful variable for contact pressure assessment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the contact area of the upper limb in three different strike technique positions. A total of 38 men and 38 women (n = 76, 27.3 ± 8.5 years of age, 73.9 ± 13.8 kg of body weight, 173.3 ± 8.4 cm of body height) performed a static simulation of punch with a fist, palm strike, and elbow strike, where three segments of the right upper limb were scanned. The analysis of 684 images showed a correlation (r = 0.634) between weight and punch technique position in men and significant differences in elbow strike (p < 0.001) and palm strike (p < 0.0001) between women and men. In both groups, the palm demonstrated the largest area and the elbow the smallest one. These data may be used to evaluate strike contact pressure in future studies in forensic biomechanics and assessment of injury in combat sports and self-defense.

High-wearable EEG-based distraction detection in motor rehabilitation

A method for EEG-based distraction detection during motor-rehabilitation tasks is proposed. A wireless cap guarantees very high wearability with dry electrodes and a low number of channels. Experimental validation is performed on a dataset from 17 volunteers. Different feature extractions from spatial, temporal, and frequency domain and classification strategies were evaluated. The performances of five supervised classifiers in discriminating between attention on pure movement and with distractors were compared. A k-Nearest Neighbors classifier achieved an accuracy of 92.8 ± 1.6%. In this last case, the feature extraction is based on a custom 12 pass-band Filter-Bank (FB) and the Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) algorithm. In particular, the mean Recall of classification (percentage of true positive in distraction detection) is higher than 92% and allows the therapist or an automated system to know when to stimulate the patient's attention for enhancing the therapy effectiveness.
