Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to reveal inter- and intra-rater reliability of the detailed evaluation of cognitive function by assistive robot for older adults. METHODS We investigated the inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination was conducted twice for each participant using an assistive robot and the examiner respectively (Experiment 1). The order of these two tests was randomly selected and the interval between them was 1 week. In Experiment 2, we investigated the test-retest reliability of the first robot test and this additional robot test was conducted approximately 6 weeks after Experiment 1. RESULTS Fifty-one (13 men and 38 women, mean age: 80.5 ± 5.6 years) participants went through Experiment 1 and 29 of those (eight men and 21 women, mean age: 80.4 ± 4.8 years) completed Experiment 2. In Experiment 1, the interclass coefficient (ICC) in orientation was in the high range and its Cronbach's α was 0.919, rated as excellent internal consistency. On the other hand, other items did not show positive results. In Experiment 2, the ICCs in orientation, attention, and repetition were in the adequate range, while other items showed marginal or low range. CONCLUSIONS Orientation was supposed to be utilised for figuring out initial symptoms of dementia. In the future, as robot functions become more high-tech, a partner robot might be able to measure the symptoms and severity of dementia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Older adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are at risk for physical and cognitive impairment. Cognitive function is associated with falls in older adults. However, it is unknown whether a relationship exists between cognitive function and falls in patients with COPD. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between cognitive function, balance, and gait speed in older adults with COPD. PATIENTS AND METHODS A secondary analysis was performed using data from the 2010 wave of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Cognitive (immediate and delayed recall, executive function) and physical (gait speed, tandem balance time) measure data were extracted for older adults with COPD (n = 382) and an age-matched control group without COPD (n = 382) who met inclusion/exclusion criteria. Multivariate linear regression modeling was performed to examine associations between cognitive function and mobility or balance while controlling for age, gender, body mass index, grip strength, and education. RESULTS In older adults with COPD, delayed recall was significantly associated with tandem balance performance (β= 1.42, P < .05). Other cognitive measures were not associated with gait speed or balance. CONCLUSION In older adults with COPD, one of four cognitive functions was associated with a static standing balance task. Screening of cognitive function, specifically delayed recall, should be a part of the management of falls in this population.

Abstract
Understanding how the brain maps time is central to neuroscience, behavior, psychology, and cognition. Just as in spatial navigation, self-positioning in a temporal cognitive map depends on numerous factors that are both exogenous and endogenous (e.g. time of day and experienced durations, respectively). The deprivation of external temporal landmarks can greatly reduce the ability of participants to orient in time and to formulate an adequate endogenous representation of time. However, this area of investigation in humans shows a great paucity of empirical data. This article aims at unearthing some of the experimental work that has systematically explored how humans' awareness of time is affected by varying degrees of isolation protocols. The assessment of the literature on the impact of isolation (broadly construed) on human temporalities may contribute to contextualizing the temporal distortions and disorientations reported during the ongoing worldwide pandemic Covid-19.

Abstract
Background: Time disorientation is one of the main symptoms observed in patients with dementia; however, their clock-reading ability has not been fully reported. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the clock-reading ability of both digital and analog clocks in patients with dementia. We newly devised the clock-reading test (CRT) and the number-reading test (NRT) to assess cognitive factors that may affect clock-reading ability. Furthermore, the discriminating power of the CRT was calculated. Methods: 104 participants were categorized based on their Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores as follows: subjective cognitive decline ∼ mild cognitive impairment (SCD∼MCI, N = 43), early Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (N = 26), and middle-to-late AD (N = 35). Their cognitive abilities were evaluated using the clock-drawing test (CDT), CRT, and NRT. Results: Cognitive decline leads to impairment of clock-reading ability which is more pronounced in the analog clocks than digital ones. This deficit in clock-reading is attributed to a loss of semantic memory regarding clocks at all stages. Additionally, visuospatial dysfunction and reduced ability of number recognition may lead to deficit in clock-reading in the advanced stage of AD. The discriminating power of the CRT (analog) (AUC = 0.853) was high enough to detect cognitive decline. Conclusion: Digital clocks are more readable by patients with dementia. Since reading clocks is closely associated with daily life, the CRT has proved to be a useful tool. A decline of analog clock-reading may be an early detector for the onset of dementia in elderly patients.

Abstract
This study investigated associations between time processing ability (TPA), daily time management (DTM), and dementia severity. Persons with dementia (PwDs) (n = 53) and their significant others (n = 49) participated in this cross-sectional study. Bivariate analyses were used to investigate associations between TPA and DTM and the dementia severity. Linear regression models were used to further predict the contribution of the subtests in the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) for TPA results. The results showed significant correlations between TPA and dementia severity, where visuospatial functions were the most highly correlated. TPA also showed a significant correlation to proxy-rated DTM. In addition, proxy-rated DTM was significantly correlated with dementia severity and PwDs' own self-ratings of their DTM. Knowledge of the association between TPA, dementia severity, and visuospatial functions can enable early detection of TPA impairments. For a comprehensive assessment of TPA and DTM, objective measures should be used in combination with self-ratings and proxy-ratings. The findings can be used in clinical research and healthcare settings to develop methods to compensate for impaired TPA and support DTM in PwDs.

Abstract
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and depression are common and frequently misdiagnosed in older adults in primary care. In particular, depression combined with cognitive dysfunction is associated with a higher risk of dementia. We tried to find the usefulness of orientation to time as an easy case-finding tool for suspecting MCI or depression. This cross-sectional study included 2668 community-dwelling adults aged 70-84 years from the Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (mean age of 76.0 ± 3.9 years). MCI was defined based on the criteria from the National Institute on Aging and the Alzheimer's Association; depression was defined as a score of ≥6 on the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form (GDS-SF). Time orientation to year, month, day of the week, date, and season were tested. The sensitivity for the diagnosis of each of MCI and depression was the highest for the orientation to year (MCI, 17.7%; depression, 16.0%). For the diagnosis of MCI or depression, orientation to the year had the highest sensitivity (15.5%), and the specificity, PPV, NPV was 95.5%, 67.0%, 65.5%. In conclusion, asking "what year is it?" can be helpful as an aid to case finding to suspect MCI or depression in community and primary care settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine to what extent depressive symptoms mediated and moderated the association between cognitive function and activities of daily living (ADL) disability in older adults. METHODS In older participants from the China Health and Longitudinal Retirement Survey (CHARLS), structural equation modeling and multiple regression were performed to examine the mediating and moderating role of depressive symptoms (measured by the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale) in the association between baseline cognitive function (episodic memory, attention, orientation to time, and visuospatial ability) and endpoint disability in basic ADL (BADL) or instrumental ADL (IADL). RESULTS Over a 2-year follow-up, among 1677 participants (67.5 ± 6.0 years old) free of BADL disability and 1194 participants (66.9 ± 5.6 years old) free of IADL disability, 8.3% and 22.9% developed BADL disability and IADL disability, respectively. Good baseline cognitive performance was significantly associated with the reduced incidence of BADL/IADL disability. The indirect effects of baseline depressive symptoms explained 16.9% and 14.5% of the total effect between cognition and BADL and IADL dependency, respectively. The Johnson-Neyman technique identified a threshold of 7.88 for endpoint depressive symptoms, beyond which the protective effect of baseline cognitive function on BADL emerged. CONCLUSIONS In older adults, good cognitive function reduces the risk of BADL/IADL disability. Depressive symptoms downregulate the protective effect of cognitive function on BADL/IADL over time. Intervention techniques focusing on the simultaneous improvement of cognitive dimensions and depression help improve ADL difficulty and prevent disability in older adults.

Abstract
AIMS The purposes of this study were to reveal the effectiveness of an electric calendar, showing the date and schedule automatically for older people, and to prove the characteristics of appropriate users. MATERIAL AND METHODS The participants were 27 older adults with or without dementia (9 men and 18 women, mean age: 81.5 ± 6.9 years, range: 72-94 years). The study design was a cross-over randomized controlled trial, with 15 participants (55.6%) allocated to the first group to use the electric calendar, and 12 participants (44.4%) to the second intervention group. The outcome measures are daily behaviors and cognitive function assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination and Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination. RESULTS Participants showed significant increase in total Mini-Mental State Examination score (p = 0.020, a paired t-test) after intervention period, whereas there was no significant difference after no intervention. Daily activities related healthcare were improved. The participants with positive outcomes showed higher motivations, and around 18 points in Mini-Mental State Examination. Most healthy older adults mentioned that electric calendars were useful, but unnecessary. CONCLUSION AND SIGNIFICANCE Using the electric calendar was effective in improving global cognitive function and daily activities. The target users are older people, who (1) might have mild dementia, (2) have difficulties in daily activities, (3) can be supported by caregivers, and (4) have positive motivation to new technologies.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAn electric calendar is effective on grovel cognitive function, and activities of daily living related to healthcare in older adults, as well as reality orientation therapy.The electric calendar can be useful for older people with mild dementia or mild cognitive impairment, having difficulties activities of daily living, supported by caregivers at regular intervals.
