A Grant-Free Random Access Process for Low-End Distribution System Using Deep Neural Network

With the rising number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices joining the communication network, data exchange is increased tremendously resulting in network congestion. This paper deals with the optimal transmission of IoT devices to maximize the chances of success in random access procedures. With every machine trying to use the network for the transfer of data, IoT devices pose serious challenges to the already deployed infrastructure network. With a huge number of IoT devices and fixed limited resources, the existing handshaking-based random access process is not effective. To address this research gap, we propose a grant-free procedure while considering orthogonal transmission and devise a strategy to minimize collisions and idle events and maximize success. We use deep neural networks (DNN) that take channel conditions as an input to predict the device’s transmission for a successful maximization. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithm, we calculated the average delay with respect to channel coefficient and arrival rate in addition to the number of successes against the channel coefficient. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs well and conforms with the claim of a successful maximization.

Enabling internet of things in road traffic forecasting with deep learning models

Integration of the latest technological advancements such as Internet of Things (IoT) and Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques is an active research area for various industrial applications. The rapid urbanization and exponential growth of vehicles has led to crowded traffic in cities. The deployment of IoT infrastructures for building smart and intelligent traffic management system greatly improves the quality and comfort of city dwellers. This work aims at building a cost effective IoT enabled traffic forecasting system using deep learning techniques. The case study experimentation is done in a real time traffic environment. The main contributions of this work include: (i) deploying road side sensor station built with ultrasonic sensor and Arduino Uno controller for obtaining traffic flow data (ii) building an IoT cloud system based on open source Thingspeak cloud platform for monitoring real time traffic (iii) performing short term traffic forecast using Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) models such as Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). The performance of the prediction model is compared with the traditional statistical methods such as Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The results show good performance metrics with RMSE of 5.8, 7.9, 10.2 for LSTM model and 6.7, 8.6, 10.9 for GRU model for three different scenarios such as whole day, morning congested hour and evening congested hour datasets.

Predicting and Analyzing Road Traffic Injury Severity Using Boosting-Based Ensemble Learning Models with SHAPley Additive exPlanations

Road traffic accidents are one of the world’s most serious problems, as they result in numerous fatalities and injuries, as well as economic losses each year. Assessing the factors that contribute to the severity of road traffic injuries has proven to be insightful. The findings may contribute to a better understanding of and potential mitigation of the risk of serious injuries associated with crashes. While ensemble learning approaches are capable of establishing complex and non-linear relationships between input risk variables and outcomes for the purpose of injury severity prediction and classification, most of them share a critical limitation: their “black-box” nature. To develop interpretable predictive models for road traffic injury severity, this paper proposes four boosting-based ensemble learning models, namely a novel Natural Gradient Boosting, Adaptive Gradient Boosting, Categorical Gradient Boosting, and Light Gradient Boosting Machine, and uses a recently developed SHapley Additive exPlanations analysis to rank the risk variables and explain the optimal model. Among four models, LightGBM achieved the highest classification accuracy (73.63%), precision (72.61%), and recall (70.09%), F1-scores (70.81%), and AUC (0.71) when tested on 2015–2019 Pakistan’s National Highway N-5 (Peshawar to Rahim Yar Khan Section) accident data. By incorporating the SHapley Additive exPlanations approach, we were able to interpret the model’s estimation results from both global and local perspectives. Following interpretation, it was determined that the Month_of_Year, Cause_of_Accident, Driver_Age and Collision_Type all played a significant role in the estimation process. According to the analysis, young drivers and pedestrians struck by a trailer have a higher risk of suffering fatal injuries. The combination of trailers and passenger vehicles, as well as driver at-fault, hitting pedestrians and rear-end collisions, significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries. This study suggests that combining LightGBM and SHAP has the potential to develop an interpretable model for predicting road traffic injury severity.

A Deep Learning Approach to Analyze Airline Customer Propensities: The Case of South Korea

In the airline industry, customer satisfaction occurs when passengers’ expectations are met through the airline experience. Considering that airline service quality is the main factor in obtaining new and retaining existing customers, airline companies are applying various approaches to improve the quality of the physical and social servicescapes. It is common to use data analysis techniques for analyzing customer propensity in marketing. However, their application to the airline industry has traditionally focused solely on surveys; hence, there is a lack of attention paid to deep learning techniques based on survey results. This study has two purposes. The first purpose is to find the relationship between various factors influencing customer churn risk and satisfaction by analyzing the airline customer data. For this, we applied deep learning techniques to the survey data collected from the users who have used mostly Korean airplanes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the one of the few attempts at applying deep learning to analyze airline customer propensities. The second purpose is to analyze the influence of the social servicescape, including the viewpoints of the cabin crew and passengers using aircraft, on airline customer propensities. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method of considering human services increased the accuracy of predictive models by up to 10% and 9% in predicting customer churn risk and satisfaction, respectively.

The DT enable the efficacy of the system via automation, innovation, creativities. The another concept of DT in the engineering domain is to replace the manual and/or conventional process by means of automation to handle the big-data problems in an efficient way and harness the static/dynamic system information without knowing the system parameters. The DT represents the both opportunities and challenges to the developer and/or user in an organization, such as development and adaptation of new tool and technique in the system and society with respect to the various applications (i.e., digital twin, cybersecurity, condition monitoring and fault detection & diagnosis (FDD), forecasting and prediction, intelligent data analytics, healthcare monitoring, feature extraction and selection, intelligent manufacturing and production, future city, advanced construction, resilient infrastructure, greater sustainability etc.). Additionally, due to high impact of advanced artificial intelligent, machine learning and data analytics techniques, the harness of the profit of the DT is increased globally. Therefore, the integration of DT into all areas deliver a value to the both users as well as developer. In this editorial fifty-two different applications of DT of distinct engineering domains are presented, which includes its detailed information, state-of-the-art, methodology, proposed approach development, experimental and/or emulation-based performance demonstration and finally conclusive summary of the developed tool/technique along with the future scope.
