Abstract
BACKGROUND Essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) are common movement disorders. ET-PD syndrome is characterized by the occurrence of PD in patients with a previous history of ET, which may be an independent phenotype distinct from PD. This study aims to identify clinical characteristics and subtypes in ET-PD. METHODS A total of 93 newly diagnosed ET-PD patients and 93 newly diagnosed PD patients matched for age, sex, education, and disease duration of PD were selected using propensity score matching analysis. The K-means cluster analysis was performed for 11 variables derived from the ET-PD group, and cluster profiles were established through statistical analysis of demographic and clinical variables. RESULTS The ET-PD group consisted of a high number of patients with a family history of ET exhibiting evident tremor with milder hypokinesia and postural instability symptoms, as compared to the PD group. Through the cluster analysis, two clusters of ET-PD patients were identified. The ET-PD cluster 1 ( n = 34) had a shorter ET duration before PD onset, lower number of patients with a family history of ET, higher unified PD rating scale instability scores, higher non-motor symptoms scores (non-motor symptoms scale D1 scores, Hamilton depression scale scores, Hamilton anxiety scale scores, and PD sleep scale-2 scores), and higher Chinese version of the PD questionnaire-39 scores relative to the ET-PD cluster 2 ( n = 59). CONCLUSION ET-PD patients had significantly different characteristics for motor symptoms as compared to PD patients, and may be distinctly divided into two clinical subtypes, namely, the ET-PD complex type and the ET-PD simple type.

Abstract
Background Non-motor symptoms (NMS) are compulsory clinical features for the clinical diagnosis of multiple system atrophy (MSA), some of which precede motor symptoms onset. To date, few studies have systematically investigated NMS in MSA and the timing of presenting NMS as the disease progresses. Clinically, MSA is difficult to be differentiated from Parkinson's disease (PD) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and the differences in NMS between MSA and PD/PSP remain unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the burden of NMS between MSA and PD/PSP and to delineate the timing of NMS presentation relative to the onset of motor symptoms in MSA. Methods A total of 61, 87, and 30 patients with MSA, PD, and PSP, respectively, were enrolled in this study. NMS was systematically assessed in all patients using the NMS scale (NMSS), and the onset of NMS relative to the onset of motor symptoms in MSA was investigated. Results MSA group had higher total NMSS scores (82.15 ± 46.10) than the PD (36.14 ± 30.78) and PSP (50.30 ± 55.05) groups (p < 0.001 overall). The number distribution pattern of the NMS was significantly different among the three parkinsonian disorders (p < 0.001 overall). In total, 85.2% of patients with MSA had more than 10 NMS, which was significantly higher than PD (28.7%) and PSP (33.3%). The frequency and scores of many NMSS subdomains and symptoms were higher in MSA than in PD and PSP (all p < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that patients with fainting, lack of motivation, swallowing, and loss of sexual interest could be attributed to MSA rather than PD or PSP, while patients with loss of concentration and forgetfulness were characteristic features of PD or PSP rather than MSA. REM-sleep behavior disorder (RBD), constipation, problems having sex, and loss of sexual interest preceded the motor symptoms onset of MSA by 2.81 ± 4.51, 1.54 ± 6.32, 1.35 ± 4.70, and 0.45 ± 3.61 years, respectively. Conclusion The NMS spectrum in MSA differs from that of PD and PSP. Patients with MSA have a higher NMS burden than patients with PD or PSP. RBD, constipation, problems having sex, and loss of sexual interest may become early diagnostic clinical markers of MSA.

Risk factors for motor complications in female patients with Parkinson's disease. Neurol Sci 2022; 43:4735-4743. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the risk factors of motor complications in female patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and the correlation between the occurrence of motor complications and sex hormone levels. METHODS According to the occurrence and types of motor complications, 103 female PD patients were divided into two groups: patients with or without the wearing-off phenomenon, patients with or without dyskinesia. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed respectively to screen for the risk factors of the wearing-off phenomenon and dyskinesia in female PD patients. RESULTS Among 103 female PD patients, 44 (42.72%) had motor complications. Patients with the wearing-off phenomenon and patients with dyskinesia had higher prolactin levels than patients without the wearing-off phenomenon and patients without dyskinesia, respectively. However, the difference was no longer significant when the two groups were corrected for multiple comparisons (P < 0.0028). Multivariate analysis found that younger age at onset and higher Hoehn-Yahr (H&Y) stage were identified as independent risk factors for the wearing-off phenomenon and younger age of onset was an independent risk factor for dyskinesia in female PD patients (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Female PD patients have a higher incidence of motor complications. Younger age of onset and higher H&Y stage were the risk factors of the wearing-off phenomenon, and younger onset age was the risk factor of dyskinesia in female PD patients. There may be a certain correlation between the occurrence of motor complications and sex hormone levels in female PD patients, which requires further verification.

Abstract
Tremor, the most common movement disorder, may occur in isolation or may co-exist with a variety of other neurologic and movement disorders including parkinsonism, dystonia, and ataxia. When associated with Parkinson's disease, tremor may be present at rest or as an action tremor overlapping in phenomenology with essential tremor. Essential tremor may be associated not only with parkinsonism but other neurological disorders, suggesting the possibility of essential tremor subtypes. Besides Parkinson's disease, tremor can be an important feature of other parkinsonian disorders, such as atypical parkinsonism and drug-induced parkinsonism. In addition, tremor can be a prominent feature in patients with other movement disorders such as fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, and Wilson's disease in which parkinsonian features may be present. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine patterns of sleep disorders among hospitalized adults 65 years and older as related to Parkinson's disease (PD) status and to evaluate sex differences in the associations between PD with sleep disorders. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using 19,075,169 hospital discharge records (8,169,503 men and 10,905,666 women) from the 2004-2014 Nationwide Inpatient Sample databases. PD and sleep disorder diagnoses were identified based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification coding. Logistic regression models were constructed for each sleep disorder as a correlate of PD status; adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated taking into account patient and hospital characteristics. RESULTS Period prevalences of PD and sleep disorder were estimated to be 2.1% and 8.1%, respectively. Most sleep disorder types, with the exception of sleep-related breathing disorders, were positively associated with PD diagnosis. Statistically significant interactions by sex were noted for associations of insomnia (men: aOR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.24-1.36; women: aOR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.12-1.22), parasomnia (men: aOR = 3.74, 95% CI = 3.44-4.07; women: aOR = 2.69, 95% CI = 2.44-2.96), sleep-related movement disorder (men: aOR = 1.09, 95% CI = 1.07-1.11; women: aOR = 1.22, 95% CI = 1.20-1.25), and any sleep disorder (men: aOR = 1.06, 95% CI = 1.05-1.08; women: aOR = 1.15, 95% CI = 1.13-1.17) with PD status. CONCLUSIONS Overall, hospitalized men are more likely to experience PD with insomnia or parasomnia, whereas hospitalized women are more likely to experience PD with sleep-related movement disorder or any sleep disorder. Prospective cohort studies are needed to replicate these cross-sectional findings.

Abstract
Sleep disorders are frequent in patients diagnosed with essential tremor (ET). The present review focuses on sleep disorders and the results of polysomnographic studies performed in patients with ET. For this purpose we performed a systematic review crossing the search term "essential tremor" with "sleep," "sleep disorders," "sleep disturbances" and "polysomnography," and with specific sleep disorders, according to the International Classification of the Sleep Disorders-Third Edition, using the PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, and Web of Science Databases. The most frequent sleep problems reported by patients with ET were the bad quality of sleep and excessive daytime somnolence (the latter could be related to drugs commonly used for the treatment of ET). Probable rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, coexistent restless legs syndrome, insomnia, and nocturia were not infrequent complaints, while the presence of other sleep disorders in patients with ET was restricted to anecdotal reports or not described. Meta-analyses of previous reports showed that patients with ET (according to the PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines) showed higher scores in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale than controls and lower scores than those of patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Studies using polysomnography in patients with ET are scarce and do not permit to establish valid conclusions regarding polysomnographic features in this disorder.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW Patients diagnosed with essential tremor (ET) report frequent sleep complaints. This review focuses on the main findings of studies addressing sleep features in patients diagnosed with ET, updating previously reported information. Bad quality of sleep and excessive daytime somnolence are very frequent in patients with ET, although the effects of the drugs used for the therapy of ET could contribute to these complaints. REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs, insomnia, and nocturia are frequent complaints as well. There is a lack of studies addressing polysomnographic features of ET.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to perform a comparative analysis of postural and neuropsychiatric features in patients with essential tremor (ET), various Parkinson's disease (PD) phenotypes, and the phenotype of combined ET and PD (ET-PD). METHODS 169 PD patients with early (1.0-2.0) and 111 PD patients with advanced (2.5-3.0) stages based on the Hoehn and Yahr scale, 55 patients with ET and 26 patients with ET-PD were enrolled in the study. Motor and non-motor symptoms of patients with PD, ET and ET-PD were studied using standardized scales and stabilometry. RESULTS Patients with ETPD had milder manifestations of parkinsonism compared to PD patients at the same stages of the disease. Patients in the advanced PD group showed more pronounced posture and balance impairment compared to all other groups assessed by standardized walking and balance scales. No difference using scales for postural assessment was found between ETPD, ET and early stage PD. Using stabilometry, we discovered that indexes of stabilometric parameters were lower in ETPD patients compared to ET and advanced PD, although no difference between ETPD and early PD was found. PD patients in early stages had lower results in most of the indexes compared to ET. CONCLUSION Here, we conducted for the first time a stabilometric examination of ET-PD patients, which could be helpful in differential diagnosis. This analysis helps expand understanding of the clinical manifestations of PD, ET and ET-PD.

Abstract
Background: Essential tremor (ET) is manifested as an isolated syndrome of bilateral upper limb action tremor. Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease, with typical motor symptoms of bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. ET-PD describes the new-onset of PD in ET patients. Recently, numerous studies on epidemiology, genetics, pathology, clinical features, and neuroimaging studies are challenging the idea that ET is an isolated disease, suggesting that patients with ET have the tendency to develop PD. Methods: In this review article, we collected recent findings that reveal prodromal markers of PD in patients with ET. Results: Substantia nigra hyperechogenicity serves as a prodromal marker for predicting the development of PD in patients with ET and provides a reference for therapeutic strategies. Additional potential markers include other neuroimaging, clinical features, heart rate, and genetics, whereas others lack sufficient evidence. Conclusion: In consideration of the limited research of PD in patients with ET, we are still far from revealing the prodromal markers. However, from the existing follow-up studies on ET patients, Substantia nigra hyperechogenicity may enable further exploration of the relationship between ET and PD and the search for pathogenesis-based therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Essential tremor and Parkinson's syndrome are two common movement disorders that may co-occur in some individuals. There is no diagnostic neuropathology for essential tremor, but in PD and other Parkinson's syndrome variants, the neuropathology is well known. The spectrum of Parkinson's syndrome variants associated with essential tremor, their clinical features, and course have not been determined in autopsy-confirmed cases. OBJECTIVES To identify: diagnostic features of essential tremor/Parkinson's syndrome, different Parkinson's syndrome variants, and long-term clinical profile in such cases. METHODS Patients that had an essential tremor diagnosis and a subsequent clinical or pathological diagnosis of Parkinson's syndrome seen in our clinic during 50 years were included. The diagnosis of parkinsonism was made when bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor were all clinically evident. RESULTS Twenty-one cases were included. All the common variants of parkinsonism co-occurred with essential tremor. The most common was PD (67%) followed by PSP. The pathological findings were not predicted clinically in 2 cases that had essential tremor/PD and in all 5 essential tremor/PSP cases. CONCLUSION In most essential tremor/Parkinson's syndrome patients, the main motor features of parkinsonism-bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor-were identifiable. All known degenerative Parkinson's syndrome variants co-occurred in essential tremor patients. © 2019 The Authors. Abstract
Background There is longstanding controversy surrounding the possible link between essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Inconsistent and unreliable diagnostic criteria may in part account for some of the difficulties in defining the relationship between these two common movement disorders. Methods References for this systematic review were identified using PubMed with the search terms "essential tremor" AND "Parkinson's disease" with articles published in English between 1960 and September 2018 included. Results In this review we provide evidence that some patients diagnosed with ET have an increased risk of developing PD years or decades after onset of action tremor. There are several still unresolved questions about the link between the two disorders including lack of verifiable diagnostic criteria for the two disorders and marked overlap in phenomenology. Here we review clinical, epidemiologic, imaging, pathologic, and genetic studies that address the ET-PD relationship. Several lines of evidence support the association between ET and PD, including overlapping motor and non-motor features, relatively high prevalence of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (26-43%) in ET patients, increased prevalence of PD in patients with longstanding antecedent ET, increased prevalence of ET in family members of patients with PD, and the presence of Lewy bodies in the brains of some ET patients (15-24%). Discussion There is a substantial body of evidence supporting the association between ET and PD within at least a subset of patients, although the nature and possible pathogenic mechanisms of the relationship are not well understood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The therapeutic strategies to manage neurodegenerative diseases remain limited and it is necessary to discover new agents for their prevention and control. Oxidative stress and inflammation play a main role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study is to review the effects of green tea catechins against the Neurodegenerative Diseases. METHODS In this study, we extensively reviewed all articles on the terms of Green tea, catechins, CNS disorders, and different diseases in PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases between the years 1990 and 2017. RESULTS The present study found that catechins, the major flavonoids in green tea, are powerful antioxidants and radical scavengers which possess the potential roles in the management of neurodegenerative diseases. Catechins modulate the cellular and molecular mechanisms through the inflammation-related NF-κB and the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) signaling pathways. CONCLUSION The findings of the present review shows catechins could be effective against neurodegenerative diseases due to their antioxidation and anti-inflammation effects and the involved biochemical pathways including Nrf2 and NF-kB signaling pathways.
