Self-supervised dual-domain balanced dropblock-network for low-dose CT denoising

Objective.Self-supervised learning methods have been successfully applied for low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) denoising, with the advantage of not requiring labeled data. Conventional self-supervised methods operate only in the image domain, ignoring valuable priors in the sinogram domain. Recently proposed dual-domain methods address this limitation but encounter issues with blurring artifacts in the reconstructed image due to the inhomogeneous distribution of noise levels in low-dose sinograms.Approach.To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes SDBDNet, an end-to-end dual-domain self-supervised method for LDCT denoising. With the network designed based on the properties of inhomogeneous noise in low-dose sinograms and the principle of moderate sinogram-domain denoising, SDBDNet achieves effective denoising in dual domains without introducing blurring artifacts. Specifically, we split the sinogram into two subsets based on the positions of detector cells to generate paired training data with high similarity and independent noise. These sub-sinograms are then restored to their original size using 1D interpolation and learning-based correction. To achieve adaptive and moderate smoothing in the sinogram domain, we integrate Dropblock, a type of convolution layer with regularization, into SDBDNet, and set a weighted average between the denoised sinograms and their noisy counterparts, leading to a well-balanced dual-domain approach.Main results.Numerical experiments show that our method outperforms popular non-learning and self-supervised learning methods, demonstrating its effectiveness and superior performance.Significance.While introducing a novel high-performance dual-domain self-supervised LDCT denoising method, this paper also emphasizes and verifies the importance of appropriate sinogram-domain denoising in dual-domain methods, which might inspire future work.

CT image denoising methods for image quality improvement and radiation dose reduction

With the ever-increasing use of computed tomography (CT), concerns about its radiation dose have become a significant public issue. To address the need for radiation dose reduction, CT denoising methods have been widely investigated and applied in low-dose CT images. Numerous noise reduction algorithms have emerged, such as iterative reconstruction and most recently, deep learning (DL)-based approaches. Given the rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence techniques, we recognize the need for a comprehensive review that emphasizes the most recently developed methods. Hence, we have performed a thorough analysis of existing literature to provide such a review. Beyond directly comparing the performance, we focus on pivotal aspects, including model training, validation, testing, generalizability, vulnerability, and evaluation methods. This review is expected to raise awareness of the various facets involved in CT image denoising and the specific challenges in developing DL-based models.

Suppressing multi-material and streak artifacts with an accelerated 3D iterative image reconstruction algorithm for in-line X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography

In-line X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography typically contains two independent procedures: phase retrieval and computed tomography reconstruction, in which multi-material and streak artifacts are two important problems. To address these problems simultaneously, an accelerated 3D iterative image reconstruction algorithm is proposed. It merges the above-mentioned two procedures into one step, and establishes the data fidelity term in raw projection domain while introducing 3D total variation regularization term in image domain. Specifically, a transport-of-intensity equation (TIE)-based phase retrieval method is updated alternately for different areas of the multi-material sample. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Iterative reconstruction algorithm based on discriminant adaptive-weighted TV regularization for fibrous biological tissues using in-line X-ray phase-contrast imaging

In-line X-ray phase-contrast computed tomography (IL-PCCT) can produce high-contrast and high-resolution images of biological samples, and it has a great advantage with regard to imaging the microstructures and morphologies of fibrous biological tissues (FBTs). Filtered back projection (FBP) is widely used in ILPCCT. However, it requires long scanning times and high radiation doses to produce high-quality CT images, and this restricts its applicability in biomedical and preclinical studies on FBTs. To solve this problem, a novel IL-PCCT reconstruction algorithm is proposed to decrease the radiation dose by reducing the number of projections and reconstruct high-quality CT images of FBTs. The proposed algorithm incorporates the FBP method into the iterative reconstruction framework. Considering the area types and anisotropic edge properties of FBTs, a discriminant adaptive-weighted total variation model is introduced to optimize the intermediate reconstructed images. A fibrous phantom simulation and real experiment were performed to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm. Simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm is an effective IL-PCCT reconstruction method for FBTs with incomplete projection data, and it has a great ability to suppress artifacts and preserve the edges of fibrous structures.

Spatial resolution improvement of 450 kV computed tomography via vertical subpixel detector shifting

X-ray sources with acceleration voltages of 450 kV typically have large focal spot sizes that lead to low spatial resolution computed tomography (CT) data. In this work a method to improve the spatial resolution of 450 kV CT is developed. The proposed method relies on using vertical subpixel detector shifting and deconvolution to generate a projection-set that has double the number of pixels in the direction parallel to the axis of rotation. The results show that the proposed method is able to increase the 10% modulation transfer function of the considered system from 3 lp/mm to 4 lp/mm. In addition, a scan of a metal additively manufactured component with periodic features of approximately 200 μm is used to demonstrate the method; small features that were not fully resolved in a conventional scan become resolvable when the proposed method is used.
