Deep Learning-based Classification of Fruit Diseases: An Application for Precision Agriculture

Explainable AI-driven model for gastrointestinal cancer classification

Although the detection procedure has been shown to be highly effective, there are several obstacles to overcome in the usage of AI-assisted cancer cell detection in clinical settings. These issues stem mostly from the failure to identify the underlying processes. Because AI-assisted diagnosis does not offer a clear decision-making process, doctors are dubious about it. In this instance, the advent of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI), which offers explanations for prediction models, solves the AI black box issue. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) approach, which results in the interpretation of model predictions, is the main emphasis of this work. The intermediate layer in this study was a hybrid model made up of three Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) (InceptionV3, InceptionResNetV2, and VGG16) that combined their predictions. The KvasirV2 dataset, which comprises pathological symptoms associated to cancer, was used to train the model. Our combined model yielded an accuracy of 93.17% and an F1 score of 97%. After training the combined model, we use SHAP to analyze images from these three groups to provide an explanation of the decision that affects the model prediction.

Precision Agriculture and Sensor Systems Applications in Colombia through 5G Networks

The growing global demand for food and the environmental impact caused by agriculture have made this activity increasingly dependent on electronics, information technology, and telecommunications technologies. In Colombia, agriculture is of great importance not only as a commercial activity, but also as a source of food and employment. However, the concept of smart agriculture has not been widely applied in this country, resulting in the high production of various types of crops due to the planting of large areas of land, rather than optimization of the processes involved in the activity. Due to its technical characteristics and the radio spectrum considered in its deployment, 5G can be seen as one of the technologies that could generate the greatest benefits for the Colombian agricultural sector, especially in the most remote rural areas, which currently lack mobile network coverage. This article provides an overview of the current 5G technology landscape in Colombia and presents examples of possible 5G/IoT applications that could be developed in Colombian fields. The results show that 5G could facilitate the implementation of the smart farm in Colombia, improving current production and efficiency. It is useful when designing 5G implementation plans and strategies, since it categorizes crops by regions and products. This is based on budget availability, population density, and regional development plans, among others.

FTCN: A Reservoir Parameter Prediction Method Based on a Fusional Temporal Convolutional Network

Predicting reservoir parameters accurately is of great significance in petroleum exploration and development. In this paper, we propose a reservoir parameter prediction method named a fusional temporal convolutional network (FTCN). Specifically, we first analyze the relationship between logging curves and reservoir parameters. Then, we build a temporal convolutional network and design a fusion module to improve the prediction results in curve inflection points, which integrates characteristics of the shallow convolution layer and the deep temporal convolution network. Finally, we conduct experiments on real logging datasets. The results indicate that compared with the baseline method, the mean square errors of FTCN are reduced by 0.23, 0.24 and 0.25 in predicting porosity, permeability, and water saturation, respectively, which shows that our method is more consistent with the actual reservoir geological conditions. Our innovation is that we propose a new reservoir parameter prediction method and introduce the fusion module in the model innovatively. Our main contribution is that this method can well predict reservoir parameters even when there are great changes in formation properties. Our research work can provide a reference for reservoir analysis, which is conducive to logging interpreters’ efforts to analyze rock strata and identify oil and gas resources.

An Automated Hyperparameter Tuning Recurrent Neural Network Model for Fruit Classification

Automated fruit classification is a stimulating problem in the fruit growing and retail industrial chain as it assists fruit growers and supermarket owners to recognize variety of fruits and the status of the container or stock to increase business profit and production efficacy. As a result, intelligent systems using machine learning and computer vision approaches were explored for ripeness grading, fruit defect categorization, and identification over the last few years. Recently, deep learning (DL) methods for classifying fruits led to promising performance that effectively extracts the feature and carries out an end-to-end image classification. This paper introduces an Automated Fruit Classification using Hyperparameter Optimized Deep Transfer Learning (AFC-HPODTL) model. The presented AFC-HPODTL model employs contrast enhancement as a pre-processing step which helps to enhance the quality of images. For feature extraction, the Adam optimizer with deep transfer learning-based DenseNet169 model is used in which the Adam optimizer fine-tunes the initial values of the DenseNet169 model. Moreover, a recurrent neural network (RNN) model is utilized for the identification and classification of fruits. At last, the Aquila optimization algorithm (AOA) is exploited for optimal hyperparameter tuning of the RNN model in such a way that the classification performance gets improved. The design of Adam optimizer and AOA-based hyperparameter optimizers for DenseNet and RNN models show the novelty of the work. The performance validation of the presented AFC-HPODTL model is carried out utilizing a benchmark dataset and the outcomes report the promising performance over its recent state-of-the-art approaches.

Smart Agriculture Cloud Using AI Based Techniques

This research proposes a generic smart cloud-based system in order to accommodate multiple scenarios where agriculture farms using Internet of Things (IoTs) need to be monitored remotely. The real-time and stored data are analyzed by specialists and farmers. The cloud acts as a central digital data store where information is collected from diverse sources in huge volumes and variety, such as audio, video, image, text, and digital maps. Artificial Intelligence (AI) based machine learning models such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), which is one of many classification types, are used to accurately classify the data. The classified data are assigned to the virtual machines where these data are processed and finally available to the end-users via underlying datacenters. This processed form of digital information is then used by the farmers to improve their farming skills and to update them as pre-disaster recovery for smart agri-food. Furthermore, it will provide general and specific information about international markets relating to their crops. This proposed system discovers the feasibility of the developed digital agri-farm using IoT-based cloud and provides solutions to problems. Overall, the approach works well and achieved performance efficiency in terms of execution time by 14%, throughput time by 5%, overhead time by 9%, and energy efficiency by 13.2% in the presence of competing smart farming baselines.
