Luffa cylindrica Immobilized with Aspergillus terreus QMS-1: an Efficient and Cost-Effective Strategy for the Removal of Congo Red using Stirred Tank Reactor

Hybrid constructed wetlands and filamentous fungi for treatment of mixed sewage and industrial effluents

Developing countries face multifaceted problems of water pollution and futile measures to combat water pollution. This study was conducted to explore the potential application of sustainable nature-based solutions, hybrid constructed wetlands, and the application of filamentous fungi to treat polluted river water that receives sewage and industrial wastewater. A pilot-scale hybrid constructed wetland design comprising two types of floating plants in distinct tanks along with a floating wetland and a free-water surface wetland connected in series was commissioned and tested. The system successfully removed organic pollution (BOD 94% and COD 90%), nutrients (NH4-N and NO3-N 67% and PO4-P 81%), and heavy metals (Cr 75%, Ni 56%, and Fe 79%) in 40 h and showed a high buffering capacity to cope with the varying pollutant loads. Metagenomics analysis of treated and untreated samples of river water revealed a diversified spatial bacterial community with ~ 25% sequences related to sulfur-metabolizing bacteria, genus Sulfuricurvum. The application of an immobilized strain of A. niger as a mycoremediation technique was also tested. It successfully removed pollutants in the combined sewage and industrial wastewater present in river water: COD (96%), TSS (97%), NH4-N (65%), NO3-N (67%), and PO4-P (78%). This study demonstrated that hybrid constructed wetlands and mycoremediation can be used as sustainable wastewater treatment options in the local context and also in developing countries where most of the conventional wastewater treatment plants do not operate.

Degradation and detoxification of reactive yellow dyes by Scedosporium apiospermum: a mycoremedial approach

Textile industrial effluents have long enunciated the essentiality of ascertaining an efficient wastewater treatment for the removal of azo dyes given their potential disturbances on the ecosystem. Our study investigated the efficiency of the strain SKF2 among 14 other isolates, molecularly identified to be Scedosporium apiospermum, isolated by our research group from the textile effluent sludge in the degradation of two azo dyes, Reactive Yellow 145 and Remazol Yellow RR. Kinetic profiling of the degradation process revealed the decolourisation efficiency to be 94.8 and 86.9% for RY 145 and RYRR, respectively, during the declining growth phase. Laccase and polyphenol oxidase (RY 145-2.37 and RYRR-2.30 U/mL; RY 145-3.26 and RYRR-2.89 U/mL, respectively) were found to influence the biodegradation process in both the dyes than the other examined fungal degradative enzymes. The metabolic pathway predicted with the aid of GC-MS analysis identified the degraded metabolites to be smaller molecular weight non-toxic products. Assessment of toxicity via brine shrimp lethality assay (RY 145-23.3% and RYRR-16.7%, respectively) and seed germination assay (RY 145-96.7% and RYRR-83.3%) further solidified the detoxified status of both the dyes after biodegradation. The experimental data thus substantiated the expediency of S. apiospermum SKF2 in the degradation of textile azo dyes and its further employment in the bioremediation of textile wastewaters for agricultural applications and ecological recycling.

Use of Ionic Liquid Pretreated and Fermented Sugarcane Bagasse as an Adsorbent for Congo Red Removal

A large amount of industrial wastewater containing pollutants including toxic dyes needs to be processed prior to its discharge into the environment. Biological materials such as sugarcane bagasse (SB) have been reported for their role as adsorbents to remove the dyes from water. In this study, the residue SB after fermentation was utilized for the dye removal. A combined pretreatment of NaOH and methyltrioctylammonium chloride was given to SB for lignin removal, and the pretreated SB was utilized for cellulase production from Bacillus aestuarii UE25. The strain produced 118 IU mL^-1 of endoglucanse and 70 IU mL^-1 of β-glucosidase. Scanning electron microscopy and FTIR spectra showed lignin and cellulose removal in fermented SB. This residue was utilized for the adsorption of an azo dye, congo red (CR). The thermodynamic, isotherm and kinetics studies for the adsorption of CR revealed distinct adsorption features of SB. Untreated SB followed Langmuir isotherm, whereas pretreated SB and fermented SB obeyed the Freundlich isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order model fitted well for the studied adsorbents. The results of thermodynamic studies revealed spontaneous adsorption with negative standard free energy values. Untreated SB showed a 90.36% removal tendency at 303.15 K temperature, whereas the adsorbents comprised of pretreated and fermented SB removed about 98.35% and 97.70%, respectively. The study provided a strategy to utilize SB for cellulase production and its use as an adsorbent for toxic dyes removal.

Recent Achievements in Dyes Removal Focused on Advanced Oxidation Processes Integrated with Biological Methods

In the last 3 years alone, over 10,000 publications have appeared on the topic of dye removal, including over 300 reviews. Thus, the topic is very relevant, although there are few articles on the practical applications on an industrial scale of the results obtained in research laboratories. Therefore, in this review, we focus on advanced oxidation methods integrated with biological methods, widely recognized as highly efficient treatments for recalcitrant wastewater, that have the best chance of industrial application. It is extremely important to know all the phenomena and mechanisms that occur during the process of removing dyestuffs and the products of their degradation from wastewater to prevent their penetration into drinking water sources. Therefore, particular attention is paid to understanding the mechanisms of both chemical and biological degradation of dyes, and the kinetics of these processes, which are important from a design point of view, as well as the performance and implementation of these operations on a larger scale.
