Abstract
We collected meteorological and urolithiasis-related hospitalization data from four counties in Ganzhou City for 2018-2019 and used the DLNM method to assess the lagged and cumulative effects of temperature on urolithiasis hospitalizations and obtain the total effect after meta-combination. Based on the nonlinear association between temperature and urolithiasis hospitalizations, the relative risk of overall high temperature (30℃) was 2.10 (95% CI: 1.07-4.10). No statistically significant difference (p = 0.07) was observed between males (RR = 2.04, 95% CI: 1.42-2.94) and females (RR = 1.45, 95% CI: 1.09-1.92) for the heat effect, which was higher in the ≥ 60 years age group (RR = 3.18, 95% CI: 1.76-5.76) than in the < 60 years age group (p = 0.007). High temperatures increased the risk of hospitalization for urolithiasis in Ganzhou, China, and the risk was greatest for individuals aged 60 and above, with similar risks observed across counties and genders.

Abstract
Introduction and objectives Somalia was predicted to be in the global stone belt with high urolithiasis prevalence. We aimed to determine the prevalence of urolithiasis and their demographic and computer tomography (CT) characteristics among subjects under CT scans in Mogadishu, Somalia. Materials and Methods: From March 2014 to November 2022, a total of 7,276 patients who underwent an abdominopelvic non-contrast CT scan for various indications were retrospectively reviewed. The mean age was 45.6 years with a standard deviation of 21.1 (range, 0.2-110 years). Patients were subdivided into two categories: adults (≥18 years) and pediatric (≤17 years). Results Of the 7,276 patients, 1,075 (14.8%) were diagnosed with urolithiasis. Among those with urolithiasis, 702 (65.3%) were male patients, and 373 (34.7%) were female patients. Among them, adults accounted for 92.7%, while children were 7.3%. Renal stones (nephrolithiasis) were the most common, representing 57% followed by ureteric stones at 35.5%, making upper urinary stones 92.5%. Approximately 70 patients (6.5%) had bladder stones; of these, 26 of them (37%) were accompanied by benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). There were 10 urethral stones (0.9%) recorded in the study, all were found in male patients, 8 localized in prostatic urethra, and 2 in the bulbar urethra. The overall mean stone size was 13.2 mm, and 60% of them ranged from 5 to 22 mm. Only 24% of the patients were asymptomatic. Single stones were almost 70%, while staghorn calculi were 8.2%. More than 60% of the patients with urolithiasis showed some degree of hydronephrosis ranging between mild to severe. Conclusion A CT scan-based urolithiasis prevalence indicates 14.8% in Mogadishu, Somalia, and these results are consistent with the probability calculation of the weights-of-evidence (WofE) methodology based on several risk factors including temperature, climate change, mineral deposit, drinking water quality, and distribution of carbonated rocks. Considering the high prevalence of the disease, Somalia needs to invest more in prevention and treatment facilities while also training urologists that are capable of utilizing minimally invasive techniques in the country.

Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effects of climate parameters on the number of urolithiasis treatments in our hospital and understand the effects of climate parameters on the prevalence of urolithiasis in southern Taiwan. We also look at trends associated with urolithiasis and treatments. Retrospectively reviewed the records of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), ureteroscopy (URS), retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL) performed in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2018. Climate data for were collected from Central Weather Bureau. The monthly meteorological data included average temperatures, humidity, rainfall, sunshine hours, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed. Monthly numbers of patients undergoing stone management was positively correlated to average temperature (r = 0.657), relative humidity (r = 0.234), monthly rainfall (r = 0.261) and monthly sunshine hours (r = 0.348), while it was negatively correlated to atmospheric pressure (r = - 0.522). The multivariate linear regression model demonstrated temperature (ß = 10.682, 95% CI 6.178-14.646, p < 0.001) and Relative humidity (ß = - 95% CI - 5.233- - 1.216, p = 0.002) to be independently related to numbers of stone treatment. The data also revealed a rising prevalence of urolithiasis with an associated increase in the number of interventions, with fewer ESWL (74.0-49.4%). Temperature and relative humidity are associated with monthly numbers of stone treatment. Ambient temperature is the most critical climate factor affecting the prevalence of symptomatic urolithiasis and intention of active stone removal in southern Taiwan.

Abstract
Background Few studies have examined the effect of ambient temperature on upper urolithiasis in developing countries, with even fewer considering individual factors. Methods The present study analyzed data on emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis from three hospital sites of a large hospital in Hefei, China, during 2016-2020. Data on environmental factors during the same period were also analyzed. A time series analysis employing a generalized Poisson regression model (GPRM) combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was conducted to evaluate the effect of ambient temperature on the number of emergency department visits for upper urolithiasis. Results We found that ambient temperatures above 9 °C were positively associated with the frequency of upper urolithiasis visits, with the relationship being most significant on the current day and with a one-day lag. In the single-day lag effect, the most significant relative risk (RR) for mild heat (75th percentile) and high heat (95th percentile) was 1.229 (95% CI: 1.100-1.373) and 1.337 (95% CI: 1.134-1.577), respectively. The cumulative lag effect was significantly higher than the single-day lag effect, with maximum relative risks (RRs) of 1.779 (95% CI: 1.356-2.335) and 2.498 (95% CI: 1.688-3.697), respectively. The maximum lag time was 7 days. RRs were also higher among women and individuals aged 30-44 years. Conclusions Increased ambient temperature is a risk factor for upper urolithiasis, and there is a hysteresis effect. Women and individuals aged 30-44 years are the most susceptible.

Abstract
Background Ambient temperature change is a risk factor for urolithiasis that cannot be ignored. The association between temperature and urolithiasis varies from region to region. Our study aimed to analyze the impact of extremely high and low temperatures on the number of inpatients for urolithiasis and their lag effect in Ganzhou City, China. Methods We collected the daily number of inpatients with urolithiasis in Ganzhou from 2018 to 2019 and the meteorological data for the same period. The exposure-response relationship between the daily mean temperature and the number of inpatients with urolithiasis was studied by the distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM). The effect of extreme temperatures was also analyzed. A stratification analysis was performed for different gender and age groups. Results There were 38,184 hospitalizations for urolithiasis from 2018 to 2019 in Ganzhou. The exposure-response curve between the daily mean temperature and the number of inpatients with urolithiasis in Ganzhou was non-linear and had an observed lag effect. The warm effects (30.4°C) were presented at lag 2 and lag 5-lag 9 days, and the cold effects (2.9°C) were presented at lag 8 and lag 3-lag 4 days. The maximum cumulative warm effects were at lag 0-10 days (cumulative relative risk, CRR = 2.379, 95% CI: 1.771, 3.196), and the maximum cumulative cold effects were at lag 0-5 (CRR = 1.182, 95% CI: 1.054, 1.326). Men and people between the ages of 21 and 40 were more susceptible to the extreme temperatures that cause urolithiasis. Conclusion Extreme temperature was correlated with a high risk of urolithiasis hospitalizations, and the warm effects had a longer duration than the cold effects. Preventing urolithiasis and protecting vulnerable people is critical in extreme temperature environments.

Abstract
Under the background of global warming, it has been confirmed that heat exposure has a huge impact on human health. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of daily mean ambient temperature on hospital admissions for obstructive nephropathy (ON) at the population level. A total of 19,494 hospitalization cases for ON in Wuhan, China from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2018 were extracted from a nationwide inpatient database in tertiary hospitals according to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)- 10 codes. Daily ambient meteorological and pollution data during the same period were also collected. A quasi-Poisson Generalized Linear Model (GLM) combined with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to analyze the lag-exposure-response relationship between daily mean temperature and daily hospital admissions for ON. Results showed that there were significantly positive associations between the daily mean temperature and ON hospital admissions. Relative to the minimum-risk temperature (-3.4 ℃), the risk of hospital admissions for ON at moderate hot temperature (25 ℃, 75th percentile) occurred from lag day 4 and stayed to lag day 12 (cumulative relative risk [RR] was 1.846, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.135-3.005, over lag 0-12 days). Moreover, the risk of extreme hot temperature (32 ℃, 99th percentile) appeared immediately and lasted for 8 days (RR = 2.019, 95 % CI: 1.308-3.118, over lag 0-8 days). Subgroup analyses indicated that the middle-aged and elderly (≥45 years) patients might be more susceptible to the negative effects of high temperature, especially at moderate hot conditions. Our findings suggest that temperature may have a significant impact on the acute progression and onset of ON. Higher temperature is associated with increased risks of hospital admissions for ON, which indicates that early interventions should be taken in geographical settings with relatively high temperatures, particularly for the middle-aged and elderly.

Abstract
Purpose: To determine whether there is any effect of weather parameters on the incidence of renal colic patients presenting to emergency rooms (ERs) during the hottest season in Israel. Materials and Methods: This retrospective multicenter study involved all ER admissions related to renal colic in nine centres throughout Israel between 2010 and 2017. The collected data included the date of ER visits, the patients’ age and sex, and the weather features of ambient temperature, wind velocity, noon heat index, and barometric pressure. Multivariable logistic regression analyses identified predictors of increased ER visits for renal colic. Results: There were 85,501 renal colic-related ER visits during the study period, involving 62,935 (74%) males and 22,566 (26%) females ( p < 0.005). The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age of the males and females was 50 ± 5.8 and 48 ± 19.6 years, respectively ( p = 0.1). Most of the ER arrivals were in the 31- to 50-year-old age group (37%, 31,508) ( p = 0.02). The maximal ambient temperature (odds ratio (OR) = 2.213, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 2.148–2.279, p < 0.0001), lower heat index (i.e. low humidity; OR = 0.880, 95% CI = 0.872–0.887, p < 0.0001) and increased wind velocity (OR = 1.165, 95% CI = 1.149–1.182, p < 0.0001) had a significant linear effect on ER visits for renal colic events. Conclusion: Conditions that increase sweat evaporation during the hottest months, including a decreased heat index and increased wind velocity, correlated with more ER visits for renal colic events, probably due to dehydration associated with elevated sweat evaporation. Lunar cycle, seasonal variation, and prevalence of emergency urological presentations: correlation or coincidence?-A preliminary report. Curr Urol 2021; 15:45-51. Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to conduct a pilot study to determine the prevalence and patterns of emergency urological presentations and to evaluate their relationship with the lunar cycle and seasonal variation. Methods: Medical records of subjects that presented with urological pathology to the Emergency Department during the 2017 calendar year were retrospectively reviewed. The data extracted included demographic details, date and day of presentation, presenting complaints, investigations, radiological findings, and final diagnosis. Associations between emergent presentations and the lunar phase and seasonal variation were determined. Results: A total of 199 subjects were enrolled. The median participant age was 49 (interquartile range 31–64) years with the majority (n = 136, 68.3%) being male. Cystitis (n = 55, 27.6%), prostate cancer (n = 30, 15.1%), benign prostatic hypertrophy (n = 29, 14.6%), and urolithiasis (n = 29, 14.6%) were the most common clinical diagnosis. There were 96 (48.2%) patients who presented during the waxing moon phase, whereas 85 (42.7%) presented during the waning moon phase, 11 (5.6%) presented on the day of full moon, and 7 (3.5%) patients presented on the day of the new moon. Most patients presented during the summer months (n = 61, 30.7%). There was no significant association between the lunar cycle and emergent urological presentations (p = 0.99). Conclusion: In this pilot study, there was no significant association between the lunar cycle and emergent urological presentations. However, during the summer months more urology-related emergency presentations to the Emergency Department were observed.

Abstract
Many studies have been conducted to assess the health effects of climate change in Korea. However, there has been a lack of consideration regarding how the results of these studies can be applied to relevant policies. The current study aims to examine research trends at the agenda-setting stage and to review future ways in which health-related adaptation to climate change can be addressed within national public health policy. A systematic review of previous studies of the health effects of climate change in Korea was conducted. Many studies have evaluated the effect of ambient temperature on health. A large number of studies have examined the effects on deaths and cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, but a limitation of these studies is that it is difficult to apply their findings to climate change adaptation policy in the health sector. Many infectious disease studies were also identified, but these mainly focused on malaria. Regarding climate change-related factors other than ambient temperature, studies of the health effects of these factors (with the exception of air pollution) are limited. In Korea, it can be concluded that studies conducted as part of the agenda-setting stage are insufficient, both because studies on the health effects of climate change have not ventured beyond defining the problem and because health adaptation to climate change has not been set as an important agenda item. In the future, the sharing and development of relevant databases is necessary. In addition, the priority of agenda items should be determined as part of a government initiative.

Abstract
Previous studies assumed a uniform relationship between heat and kidney stone presentations. Determining whether sex and other characteristics modify the temperature dependence of kidney stone presentations has implications for explaining differences in nephrolithiasis prevalence and improving projections of the effect of climate change on nephrolithiasis. We performed an aggregated case-crossover study among 132,597 children and adults who presented with nephrolithiasis to 68 emergency departments throughout South Carolina from 1997 to 2015. We used quasi-Poisson regression with distributed lag non-linear models to estimate sex differences in the cumulative exposure and lagged response between maximum daily wet-bulb temperatures and emergent kidney stone presentations, aggregated at the ZIP-code level. We also explored interactions by age, race, payer, and climate. Compared to 10 °C, daily wet-bulb temperatures at the 99th percentile were associated with a greater increased relative risk (RR) of kidney stone presentations over 10 days for males (RR 1.73; 95% CI 1.56, 1.91) than for females (RR 1.15; 95% CI 1.01, 1.32; interaction P < 0.001). The shape of the lagged response was similar for males and females, with the greatest risk estimated for the 2 days following high temperatures. There were weak differences by age, race, and climatic zone, and no differences by payer status. The estimated risk of presenting emergently with kidney stones within 10 days of high daily wet-bulb temperatures was substantially greater among men than women, and similar between patients with public and private insurance. These findings suggest that the higher risk among males may be due to sexually dimorphic physiologic responses rather than greater exposure to ambient temperatures.

Abstract
Some studies have suggested that high ambient temperatures are a risk factor for kidney-related diseases. However, none have examined the association between ambient temperature and acute kidney injury (AKI). This study aimed to examine the association between daily mean temperature and AKI and identify high-risk subgroups in this association. We obtained health insurance claim data from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA) for 24,800 admitted cases of AKI during the period 2007-2014 in Seoul, Korea. Using a time-series design and piecewise linear regression models, we estimated the percentage change in AKI admissions associated with daily mean temperature after controlling for relevant covariates. Daily mean temperature and AKI admissions displayed an inverse association in the cold season and a nonlinear relationship with a flexion point around 28.8°C in the warm season. AKI admissions increased by 23.3% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 14.3, 33.0) per 1°C increase in mean temperature above the 28.8°C flexion point in the warm season. The estimates were greatest among men with hypertension (55.1%; 95% CI: 25.1, 92.2). However, we did not observe significant increases in AKI admissions associated with ambient temperature in the cold season (0.4% [95% CI: -0.1, 0.9] per 1°C decrease in mean temperature). Our results suggest that hospital admissions for AKI increase in association with high temperature, particularly among men with hypertension in the warm season. Thus, early detection of AKI during heat wave periods is crucial. Our findings also provide evidence for the local government to target populations vulnerable to high ambient temperatures.

Abstract
Urolithiasis is common and is becoming more prevalent worldwide. This study assessed the chronological trends in clinical and urinary metabolic features over 20 years in Korean urolithiasis patients. We performed a retrospective analysis of 4,076 patients treated at our clinic from 1996 to 2015. Urinary metabolic data and stone analysis data were available for 1,421 and 723 patients (34.9% and 17.7%), respectively. Patients were categorized into 4 groups according to the date of initial diagnosis: group 1 (1996-2000, n = 897), group 2 (2001-2005, n = 1,018), group 3 (2006-2010, n = 1,043), and group 4 (2011-2015, n = 1,118). Incidental detection of uric acid renal stones has become more prevalent in the past 10 years, accompanied by an increase in body mass index and age at diagnosis. Similarly, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus and of hypertension increased from one group to the next throughout the study period. Levels of 24-hour urinary excretion of sodium, calcium, uric acid, and oxalate have decreased significantly over the study period. The incidence of urinary metabolic abnormalities also showed an identical tendency. The proportion of stones composed of uric acid increased over the study period. In conclusion, incidental detection of uric acid renal stones has become more prevalent in Korea in the past 20 years. Urinary excretion of lithogenic constituents and the incidence of urinary metabolic abnormalities have decreased significantly over this period.

Abstract
Seasonal variation in urinary stone presentation is well described in the literature. However, previous studies have some limitations. To explore overall cumulative exposure-response and the heterogeneity in the relationships between daily meteorological factors and urolithiasis incidence in 6 major Korean cities, we analyzed data on 687,833 urolithiasis patients from 2009 to 2013 for 6 large cities in Korea: Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan. Using a time-series design and distributing lag nonlinear methods, we estimated the relative risk (RR) of mean daily urolithiasis incidence (MDUI) associated with mean daily meteorological factors, including the cumulative RR for a 20-day period. The estimated location-specific associations were then pooled using multivariate meta-regression models. A positive association was confirmed between MDUI and mean daily temperature (MDT), and a negative association was shown between MDUI and mean daily relative humidity (MDRH) in all cities. The lag effect was within 5 days. The multivariate Cochran Q test for heterogeneity at MDT was 12.35 (P = 0.136), and the related I² statistic accounted for 35.2% of the variability. Additionally, the Cochran Q test for heterogeneity and I² statistic at MDHR were 26.73 (P value = 0.148) and 24.7% of variability in the total group. Association was confirmed between daily temperature, relative humidity and urolithiasis incidence, and the differences in urolithiasis incidence might have been partially attributable to the different frequencies and the ranges in temperature and humidity between cities in Korea.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have examined the link between temperature or monthly seasonal variations and urolithiasis. The majority of these studies have demonstrated a link between higher ambient monthly temperatures and the incidence of renal colic and kidney stone disease (KSD). However, a worldwide trend on this association has not been explored and we perform a systematic review to examine the effect of seasonal variations on renal colic and KSD. MATERIALS AND METHODS A systematic review of the literature for a 26-year period (1990-2017) was conducted on all studies reporting on the effect of seasonal variations and its link to KSD. Two reviewers independently extracted the data from each study, which were analyzed using SPSS version 24. RESULTS A total of 59 studies were identified, and after screening, 13 were included in this review. The studies ranged in duration from 1 to 9 years (mean: 5.5 years) and included seasonal/monthly variations for proven stones or lithotripsy treatments or emergency department presentations with renal colic. Except for one study, there was a statistically significant association between higher monthly mean temperatures and the incidence of KSD-related events reported from the United Kingdom, South Korea, the United States, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain, Taiwan, Japan, and New Zealand. CONCLUSIONS Worldwide trends on the incidence of renal colic and KSD seem be affected by seasonal variation favoring warmer months, with data suggesting that higher ambient temperature has an association with KSD.
