Canine Wound Myiasis Caused by Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in Korea

Morphological studies of fly puparia (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the soil from a Joseon Dynasty grave in Korea

Archaeoentomological investigations were conducted on soil contents from a grave belonging to the Joseon Dynasty as part of the Urban Environment Maintenance Project (UEMP) in Cheongjin 12-16 dong (districts), Jongno-gu, Seoul, Korea, from December 01, 2008 to February 19, 2011. A total of 28 insect puparia with hard shells of the common green bottle fly Lucilia sericata were identified in the soil. Evidence suggested that the corpse was placed outside for some days instead of being buried immediately after death. This is the first report of fly puparia in soil samples from a tomb of the Joseon Dynasty during 16-17 AD in Korea. Our findings may help determine the timeframe of burial and offer archaeological insights into the funerary customs of the period.

Eight cases of canine thelaziosis found in two localities in Korea

Thelazia callipaeda, a parasitic nematode that causes thelaziosis in various mammals, including humans, is known to be endemic in Korea. However, life cycle-related information on the parasite, primarily from human infection and a few dog cases, is limited. This study reports additional cases of T. callipaeda infections in dogs from both rural and urban areas in Korea, indicating the potential for transmission to humans and other animals. We collected 61 worms from 8 infected dogs from Paju and Cheongju Cities and observed their morphological characteristics under a light microscope. The findings indicate that T. callipaeda infections in animals in Korea may be underestimated and are distributed close to human environments. Our results contribute to the growing knowledge of the reservoir hosts of T. callipaeda in Korea and highlight the importance of continued surveillance and research to prevent and control this emerging zoonotic disease.

The Growth Model of Forensically Important Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in South Korea

Abstract

Development of forensically important Lucilia sericata (Meigen) was analyzed in South Korea. Rearing was replicated five times at seven constant temperatures between 20–35 °C to elucidate changes in accumulated degree hours, based on developmental stage and body length, and 2673 individuals were statistically analyzed. The results indicated that the optimum temperature, the base temperature, and the overall thermal constant were 22.31 °C (±1.21 °C, 95% CI), 9.07 °C, and 232.81 ± 23 (mean ± SD) accumulated degree days, respectively. In the minimum ADH models of each development stage, nonlinear regression graphs were parallel at the immature stages. Based on the scatter plot (n = 973) of immature stages using ADH values and body length, the logarithmic model using Log₁₀ADH as the dependent variable was identified as the best fitting regression model. Additionally, the adjusted R² value and mean square of error were 0.911 and 0.007, respectively. This is the first forensically focused study on the development of L.sericata for the estimation of minimum postmortem interval in South Korea. In future studies, we intend to study the development of other necrophagous fly species and to identify parameters for the determination of age at post-feeding and pupal stages.

Cutaneous myiasis in cats and dogs: Cases, predisposing conditions and risk factors

Two cases of cutaneous myiasis diagnosed in 2018 in Emilia‐Romagna region (northern Italy) were reported. The first one, described in a domestic cat Felis silvestris catus L. (Carnivora: Felidae) and caused by Calliphora vicina Robineau‐Desvoidy (Diptera: Calliphoridae), was the first one of this type ever reported in Italy in cats. The second one was described in a domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris L. (Carnivora: Canidae) and caused by Lucilia sericata (Meigen) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and was unusual because it occurred in absence of lesions. An extensive literature search on cutaneous myiasis in these two domestic animal species was performed in order to draw attention to predisposing conditions and risk factors.
