Abstract
To evaluate the effect of reduced calcium (Ca) and available P (aP) levels in starter diets on growth performance and tibia, sternum and serum characteristics, and to assay the association between Ca and P (aP) intakes and these variables, 600 one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were used in a 21-days trial. Broilers were randomly allotted to five treatments with five replicate pens. Chicks were fed on one of the five starter diets that were formulated with a 10% reduction in the Ca and aP contents, starting from the control diet and hence, named as C (0.96% Ca, 0.45% aP), L1 (0.85% Ca and 0.42% aP), L2 (0.77% Ca and 0.38% aP), L3 (0.68% Ca and 0.34% aP) and L4 (0.61% Ca and 0.31% aP). Declining dietary Ca and aP levels did not affect body weight and levels of Ca, P and alkaline phosphatase in serum, but reduced linearly feed intake, the feed conversion ratio and the bone weight and ash content. The Ca and aP intakes and Ca:aP ratio displayed a positive correlation with both tibia and sternum weights, and the mass of the bones were equally sensitive to dietary Ca and aP levels. In conclusion, the body weight of young broilers was irresponsive to changes in the skeleton when exposed to early dietary Ca and aP restrictions (up to 0.61% Ca and 0.31% aP) and the mechanostat had limits due to the association between Ca and aP intakes, and bone properties.

Abstract
The hypothesis was tested that an increased digestion of coarse compared with fine limestone can alleviate the negative effects of a low dietary Ca/P ratio on the growth performance and characteristics of tibia strength (CTS) in broilers. A total of 1,152 Ross 308 broiler chickens received a standard commercial starter feed from day 0 to 13. From day 14 onward, birds received 1 of 12 diets containing 1 of 6 Ca/P ratios (0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75) and 1 of 2 limestone particle sizes (<500 [fine] and 500 to 2,000 [coarse] μm) in a study with a 6 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Total P content was fixed at 5.5 g/kg for all treatment diets. Each treatment was replicated 6 times with 16 birds per replicate pen. On day 20 and 21, twelve birds per pen were randomly selected from 4 of the 6 replicate pens for tibia analysis and digesta collection from different gut segments. The apparent Ca digestibility was higher for fine than coarse limestone in the jejunum (P = 0.043). However, this difference in Ca digestibility disappeared for the low, whereas it remained for the high Ca/P ratios in the proximal (Pinteraction = 0.067) and distal (Pinteraction = 0.052) ileum. In addition, coarse limestone improved apparent P digestibility in the proximal and distal ileum (P < 0.001) but not in the jejunum (P = 0.305). Regardless of limestone particle size, reducing dietary Ca/P ratio linearly improved apparent Ca and P digestibility in the proximal and distal ileum (P < 0.001). Moreover, decreasing dietary Ca/P ratio linearly (P < 0.001) and quadratically (P < 0.046) reduced the CTS. Reducing dietary Ca/P ratio linearly (P < 0.003) and quadratically (P ≤ 0.006) decreased body weight gain and increased feed conversion ratio. For both fine and coarse limestone, the optimal Ca/P ratio was 1.00 to 1.25 to optimize apparent Ca and P digestibility while maintaining growth performance and CTS. Reducing Ca/P ratio from 1.75 to 1.00 improved distal ileal Ca and P apparent digestibility from 36.6 to 53.7% and 48.0 to 58.3%, respectively. In conclusion, coarse limestone is equally digestible with fine limestone at a low Ca/P ratio but is less digestible at a high Ca/P ratio, and the optimal Ca/P ratio in the diet is 1.00 to 1.25 for both fine and coarse limestone.

Abstract
Simple Summary The rapid spread of antimicrobial-resistant genes in bacterial communities is a threat to human, animal, and environmental health that continues to progress inflexibly. Humic substances (HS) are promising complex molecules as an alternative to reduce the use of growth promoter antibiotics (GPA) in animal feeds. Improvements in productivity, intestinal health, immune response, and antioxidant status have been reported in broilers supplemented with HS. In the present study, broilers fed with an extract of HS (EHS) from a worm compost had similar carcass yield and excretion of coccidian oocysts but increased Clostridium perfringens and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) compared to broilers fed diets added with GPA. Broilers subjected to feed restriction had reduced growth performance and meat quality. These results confirm the growth-promoting effect of ESH, which could be explained by higher abundance of the beneficial LAB and by reducing the multiplication of harmful parasites in the gut of broilers. Abstract Humic substances (HS) from different sources have been evaluated to replace or reduce the use of growth promoter antibiotics (GPA) in the feeds of broiler chickens. The objective was to evaluate the growth performance, tibia measurements, nutrient balance, meat quality, and microbiological status of broiler fed with an HS extract (EHS) under ad libitum (ADLIB) or feed restriction (REST). Individually caged broilers (n = 180, 14–35 day of age) were assigned to a factorial arrangement of three dietary treatments: (1) positive control with bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD) and salinomycin; (2) negative control without BMD nor salinomycin, and (3) same as negative control with 0.25% EHS, and two feeding regimens 1) ADLIB or REST for 24 h on d 1, 7, and 14. Results were subjected to ANOVA. Positive control and EHS-fed broilers showed higher carcass yield (p < 0.05) and lower oocyst excretion (p < 0.01) compared to negative control birds. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) were higher in negative control and EHS-broilers compared to positive control (p < 0.01). In conclusion, higher carcass yield, lower C. perfringens and oocyst excretion were found in positive control and higher carcass yield, higher LAB and lower oocyst excretion were found in EHS-fed broilers. Broilers subjected to REST had reduced growth performance and meat quality. In conclusion, EHS could be used to increase the carcass yield and beneficial LAB in broilers.
