Abstract
Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL), Hermetia illucens (L.) (Diptera: Stratiomyidae), have emerged as a promising feed ingredient in broiler chicken diets, known for their high protein content, nutritional richness, and environmental sustainability. This review examines the effects of integrating BSFL into broiler feeds, focusing on aspects such as growth performance, nutrient digestibility, physiological responses, and immune health. The ability of BSFL to transform waste into valuable biomass rich in proteins and lipids underscores their efficiency and ecological benefits. Protein levels in BSFL can range from 32% to 53%, varying with growth stage and diet, offering a robust source of amino acids essential for muscle development and growth in broilers. While the chitin in BSFL poses questions regarding digestibility, the overall impact on nutrient utilization is generally favorable. The inclusion of BSFL in diets has been shown to enhance growth rates, feed efficiency, and carcass quality in broilers, with the larvae's balanced amino acid profile being particularly advantageous for muscle development. BSFL may also support gut health and immunity in broilers due to its bioactive components, potentially influencing the gut's microbial composition and enhancing nutrient absorption and overall health. Moreover, the capacity of BSFL to efficiently convert organic waste into protein highlights their role as an environmentally sustainable protein source for broiler nutrition. Nonetheless, further research is necessary to fully understand the long-term effects of BSFL, ideal inclusion rates, and the impact of varying larval diets and rearing conditions. It is crucial for poultry producers to consult nutritionists and comply with local regulations when incorporating new feed ingredients like BSFL into poultry diets.

Abstract
Formulating diets with high AME, especially in the grower and finisher phases, hinders the inclusion of alternative ingredients that are usually cheaper and have lower AME. Moreover, as the chicken grows the feed intake capacity is greater and may be able to maintain BW over a wide range of AME. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of chickens fed diets with progressive AME reductions, at constant or increased standardized ileal digestible (SID) lysine:AME ratio (Lys:AME). Treatment 1 (control) was formulated following the SID lysine and AME recommendations for a 4-phase feeding program. Treatment 5 was formulated with -4, -8, and -12% AME in the grower-1, grower-2, and finisher phases, respectively, and with the same Lys:AME compared with the control. Treatment 9 had the same AME as treatment 5 but higher SID lysine, increasing the Lys:AME by 1.5, 3.5, and 5.0% compared with treatment 5. In the grower-1, grower-2, and finisher phases, the final 9 dietary treatments were prepared by mixing the control diet with either treatment 5 or 9 at different proportions (75:25, 50:50, or 25:75). All birds were fed the same starter control diet. Treatments were replicated in 10 pens with 31 male chickens each, and the growth performance of birds was monitored for 42 d. Final BW linearly decreased (P < 0.05) when lowering dietary AME, but it followed a positive quadratic response with higher Lys:AME (P < 0.05). Feed intake increased (P < 0.05) with low AME, independently of the Lys:AME; but the linear regression in the feed conversion ratio (FCR) had a lower slope when the Lys:AME increased. At the end of the study, there were no differences in carcass or breast meat yield (P > 0.10). Progressively reducing AME in the last feeding phases may be a viable nutritional strategy to increase the inclusion of alternative ingredients and potentially reduce feeding costs, despite increments in feed intake and FCR. Adjusting the Lys:AME in low AME diets may help maintain the final BW of birds.

Abstract
Vibrations occurring during road transport can vary in a wide spectrum and they can lead to losses in quality of transported materials. However, the vibrations are definitely different than the loads experienced by pellet samples in the tester used for durability tests according to the standard ISO 17831-1. pThe aim of the study was to evaluate the durability of wood biomass pellets available for sale in large-area stores, in terms of loads occurring in transport. The durability of the ellets was tested by subjecting them to vertical and horizontal vibrations similar to those occurring during local transport of this type of fuel for the needs of households. Durability tests were also carried out in accordance with ISO 17831-1. The results were analyzed statistically. Among other, it was found that the vibration time impact on the tested pellet durability was significantly lower in case of horizontal vibrations than in vertical. Moreover, pellets with a diameter of 8 mm showed lower durability than pellets with a diameter of 6 mm. Durability tests carried out in accordance with ISO 17831-1 showed lower pellet strength results compared to the test methods based on lateral and vertical vibrations.

Abstract
With the recent increase in biomass pellet consumption, the mechanical degradation of pellets during transport and handling has become more important. ISO standard 17831-1 is an accepted global standard that is commonly used amongst researchers and industries to determine the mechanical durability of pellets. However, the measured mechanical durability sometimes fails to match the certificate accompanying the shipment. In such cases, pellet length specifications are suspected to play a role. This paper studies the effect of pellet length on mechanical durability for various types of commercially produced biomass pellets. In addition, the effect of test conditions and torrefaction on the mechanical durability of biomass pellets has been investigated. To study the effect of pellet length, pellets were classified into three groups: shorter than 15 mm, 15 to 30 mm, and longer than 30 mm, and their length distributions were measured using an in-house image processing tool. Then, the mechanical durability of pellets was measured using ISO standard 17831-1. The mechanical durability results were compared to random-sized pellet samples. To study the effect of test conditions, the mechanical durability test was operated at different time intervals to elucidate the effect of tumbling at different conditions. The results show that the mechanical durability depends highly on the length distribution of the pellets, with a difference between categories of up to 13%. It was also observed that the mechanical durability remains relatively constant after a specific time interval. Based on the results, we highly recommend modifying the current ISO standard to account for the pellet length distribution (PLD).
