Abstract
We investigated the effects of supplementing low protein diets with methionine (Met) or threonine (Thr) during a mixed Eimeria (consisting of E. acervulina, E. maxima and E. tenella) challenge in broilers. All birds were fed the same starter diet (d1-9) and finisher diet (d28-35) which met Cobb 500 nutrient specifications. Birds were allocated to 1 of 4 dietary treatments from d9 to 28: a standard protein diet (19% CP); a low protein diet (16% CP); or the low protein diet supplemented with Met or Thr at 50% above recommendations. On d14, half of the birds were challenged, and half of the birds were unchallenged. From d14 to 28, feed intake was recorded daily and BW every 3 or 4 d. Oocyst excretion was measured daily from d18 to 27. On d21 and 28, 3 birds per pen were euthanized to assess nutrient digestibility, cytokine expression and intestinal histology. During the acute stage of the challenge, challenged birds reduced ADFI and ADG (P < 0.05). In the pre-patent and recovery stages, birds given the 16% CP diets increased ADFI (P < 0.05), meanwhile there were no differences in ADG in these stages (P > 0.05). Nutrient digestibility was reduced in challenged birds in the acute stage (P < 0.05) but tended to be greater than in unchallenged birds during the recovery stage. There was no significant effect of diet on oocyst excretion or intestinal histology (P > 0.05). Interactions were observed between diet and challenge on IL-10 and IL-21 expression in the cecal tonsils during the acute stage of the challenge (P < 0.05), due to reduced IL-10 expression in challenged Thr birds and greater IL-21 expression in challenged Met birds. Supplementation with Thr or Met had limited effects on the outcomes of a mixed Eimeria challenge but provides benefits to the host by enhancing their immune response.

Abstract
Avian coccidiosis, despite advancements in management, nutrition, genetics, and immunology, still remains the most impactful disease, imposing substantial economic losses to the poultry industry. Coccidiosis may strike any avian species, and it may be mild to severe, depending on the pathogenicity of Eimeria spp. and the number of oocysts ingested by the bird. Unlike broilers, low emphasis has been given to laying hens. Coccidiosis in laying hens damages the gastrointestinal tract and causes physiological changes, including oxidative stress, immunosuppression, and inflammatory changes, leading to reduced feed intake and a drastic drop in egg production. Several countries around the world have large numbers of hens raised in cage-free/free-range facilities, and coccidiosis has already become one of the many problems that producers have to face in the future. However, limited research has been conducted on egg-laying hens, and our understanding of the physiological changes following coccidiosis in hens relies heavily on studies conducted on broilers. The aim of this review is to summarize the effect of coccidiosis in laying hens to an extent and correlate it with the physiological changes that occur in broilers following coccidiosis. Additionally, this review tries to explore the nutritional strategies successfully used in broilers to mitigate the negative effects of coccidiosis in improving the gut health and performance of broilers and if they can be used in laying hens.

Abstract
Abstract
Coccidiosis is acclaimed as the most prevalent enteric parasitic ailment of poultry. It is caused by an apicomplexan protozoon of the genus Eimeria, which resides in chicken intestinal epithelium leading to intestinal damage. As a result, bloody droppings are there, feed efficiency is reduced, the growth rate is impaired, and egg production is temporarily decreased. Treatment and prevention of coccidiosis are primarily accomplished by inoculating live vaccines and administering anticoccidial drugs. Due to anticoccidials’ continuous and excessive use, the mounting issue is drug resistant Eimeria strains. The poultry industry has managed resistance-related issues by suggesting shuttle and rotation schemes. Furthermore, new drugs have also been developed and introduced, but it takes a long time and causes cost inflation in the poultry industry. Moreover, government disallows growth promoters and drugs at sub-therapeutic doses in poultry due to increased concerns about the drug residues in poultry products. These constraints have motivated scientists to work on alternative ways to control coccidiosis effectively, safely, and sustainably. Using nutritional supplements is a novel way to solve the constraints mentioned above. The intriguing aspects of using dietary supplements against coccidiosis are that they reduce the risk of drug-resistant pathogen strains, ensure healthy, nutritious poultry products, have less reliance on synthetic drugs, and are typically considered environmentally safe. Furthermore, they improve productivity, enhance nonspecific immunity, preventing oxidation of fats (acting as antioxidants) and inflammation (acting as an anti-inflammatory). The present manuscript focuses on the efficacy, possible mechanism of action, applications, and different facets of nutrition supplements (such as organic acids, minerals, vitamins, probiotics, essential oils, amino acids, dietary nucleotides, feed enzymes, and yeast derivatives) as feed additive for treating poultry coccidiosis.

Abstract
Coccidia vaccination is a common practice in the poultry industry. However, research is lacking regarding the optimal nutritional support for coccidia vaccinated broilers. In this study, broilers were vaccinated with coccidia oocyst at hatch and were fed with a common starter diet from 1 to 10 d. On d 11, the broilers were randomly assigned to groups in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement. Briefly, the broilers were fed one of four diets containing 0.6, 0.8, 0.9, and 1.0% of standardized ileal digestible methionine plus cysteine (SID M+C), respectively, from 11 to 21 d. On d 14, the broilers from each diet group were orally gavaged with either PBS (Mock challenge) or Eimeria oocysts. Compared to PBS-gavaged broilers and regardless of dietary SID M+C levels, the Eimeria-gavaged broilers had 1) decreased gain-to-feed ratio (15-21 d, P = 0.002; 11-21 d, P = 0.011); 2) increased fecal oocysts (P < 0.001); 3) increased plasma anti-Eimeria IgY (P = 0.033); and 4) increased intestinal luminal interleukin-10 (IL-10; duodenum, P = 0.039; jejunum, P = 0.018) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ; duodenum, P < 0.001; jejunum, P = 0.017). Regardless of Eimeria gavage, broilers fed 0.6% SID M+C had decreased (P<0.001) body weight gain (15-21 and 11-21 d) and gain-to-feed ratio (11-14, 15-21, and 11-21 d) when compared to those fed ≥ 0.8% SID M+C. Eimeria challenge increased (P < 0.001) duodenum lesions when the broilers were fed with 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0% SID M+C, and increased (P = 0.014) mid-intestine lesions when the broilers were fed with 0.6 and 1.0% SID M+C. An interaction between the two experimental factors was detected on plasma anti-Eimeria IgY titers (P = 0.022), as coccidiosis challenge increased plasma anti-Eimeria IgY titers only when the broilers were fed with 0.9% SID M+C. In summary, the dietary SID M+C requirement for grower (11-21 d) broilers vaccinated with coccidiosis was ranged from 0.8 to 1.0% for optimal growth performance and intestinal immunity, regardless of coccidiosis challenge.

Abstract
Coccidiosis is a major intestinal challenge that causes economic loss to the broiler industry. Two battery cage studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of trace minerals, source and dose of methionine on growth performance and gut health of broilers subjected to Eimeria challenge. Experiment #1 consisted of 9 treatments of 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design + 1 arrangement with main factors of methionine (Met) sources (DL-Met vs. 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)-butanoic acid (HMTBa)), total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) levels (high vs. low; ±5% of recommended level), and sources of trace minerals (TM) Zn:Cu:Mn in the form Inorganic trace minerals (ITM) in sulfates (80:20:100ppm) vs. mineral methionine hydroxy-analogue bis-chelate (MMHAC, 40:10:50ppm), each with 8 pens of 10 birds. Experiment #2 consisted of 2 treatments--ITM [ZnSO4:tribasic copper chloride (TBCC):MnSO4 110:125:120ppm] and MMHAC (Zn:Cu:Mn, 40:30:40ppm), each with 36 pens of 10 birds. All birds except for treatment 9 in experiment #1 were orally gavaged with 1x, 4x and 16x recommended dose of coccidiosis vaccine on d0, d7 and d14, respectively. Data were subjected to one-way and/or three-way ANOVA, and means were separated by Fisher's protected LSD test with significance at p ≤ 0.05. In experiment #1, factorial analysis revealed the main effects of TSAA level and TM, but not Met source. High TSAA level improved body weight and cumulative feed intake at 14, 20, and 27d. MMHAC improved body weight at 14, and 27d; feed intake at 14, 20, and 27d; and cumulative FCR at 27d vs. sulfates. One-way ANOVA analysis showed that birds fed MMHAC and high levels of TSAA regardless of Met source had similar body weight as unchallenged birds on d27. In experiment #2, MMHAC improved body weight and cumulative FCR, and reduced jejunal IL-17A gene expression on d28. In summary, in broilers subjected to Eimeria challenge, supplementation of the reduced levels of bis-chelated trace minerals MMHAC improved growth performance compared to high levels of ITM (sulfates or TBCC), which might partially result from better immune response, high levels of TSAA improved growth performance, Met source had no effect. Supplementation of both bis-chelated trace minerals MMHAC and high levels of TSAA could overcome the growth performance challenge issue due to coccidiosis.

Abstract
Oral antibody to interleukin-10 (anti-IL-10) enhances the intestinal immune defense against Eimeria. The sulfur amino acids methionine and cysteine (M+C) play essential roles in inducing and maintaining protective immune responses during intestinal infections. Hence, increased dietary M+C may support the anti-IL-10-induced intestinal immunity to Eimeria. Broilers (n = 640) were arranged in a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design with 2 levels of each of the 3 main factors: dietary standardized ileal digestible (SID) M+C levels (0.6% or 0.8%), dietary anti-IL-10 supplementation (with or without), and coccidiosis challenge (control or challenge). Briefly, the broilers were supplied with either 0.6% or 0.8% SID M+C, each with or without anti-IL-10 (300 μg/kg), from d 10 to 21. On d 14, broilers from each diet were gavaged with either PBS or Eimeria. The resulting Eimeria infection induced fecal oocyst shedding and intestinal lesions. Broilers fed 0.8% SID M+C (main effects, P ≤ 0.05) had decreased feed-to-gain ratio, increased duodenum and cecum luminal anti-Eimeria IgA titers, and decreased fecal oocyst counts, when compared to 0.6% SID M+C. The supplementation of anti-IL-10 (main effects, P ≤ 0.05) increased cecum luminal total IgA concentration and decreased cecum lesions. Interactions (P ≤ 0.05) were detected for growth performance and cecum luminal IFN-γ. Briefly, the highest body weight gain and feed intake were reached in PBS-gavaged broilers fed 0.8% SID M+C with no anti-IL-10 and in Eimeria-challenged broilers fed 0.8% SID M+C with anti-IL-10. In Eimeria-infected broilers, anti-IL-10 increased intestinal luminal IFN-γ and body weight gain only at 0.8% SID M+C. Collectively, anti-IL-10 increased intestinal luminal IFN-γ levels, decreased cecum lesions and restored growth only when fed with adequate amounts of sulfur amino acids. Our findings underscore the importance of providing sufficient essential nutrients to support the anti-IL-10 induced immunity against coccidiosis.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of methionine (Met) deficiency in the rearing period on the growth performance, amino acids metabolism, intestinal development and gut microbiome of egg-laying chicks and the continuous effects on the performance, egg quality, and serum amino acids metabolism of the subsequent development process. Three hundred sixty one-day-old chicks were randomly divided into two groups and fed on a basal diet (NC group, Met 0.46%) and Met deficiency diet (Met- group, Met 0.27%). Each group included six replicates with 30 chicks per replicate. The trial lasted 6 weeks (0–6 weeks), both groups were fed the same basal diet which met the needs of Met during the observation period (7–24 weeks). Results showed that Met deficiency significantly decreased (P < 0.05) body weight (BW), average daily weight gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) and tibia length (TL) compared to the NC group during the trial period (0–6 weeks). Also, Met deficiency dramatically increased (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) during the trial and observation period (7–24 weeks). In addition, during the observation period, the BW and ADG were decreased (P < 0.05) in the Met- group. Moreover, Met- group decreased (P < 0.05) villi height and villi height/crypt depth ratio in jejunum at 6th weeks. In addition, the concentrations of serum main free amino acids (FAA) in the Met- group were significantly increased (P < 0.05) at 6th weeks, while were decreased at 16th weeks. Based on the α-diversity and PCoA analysis in β-diversity, there were no significant differences in the cecal microbial composition between NC and Met- groups. However, the LEfSe analysis revealed that differential genera were enriched in the NC or Met- groups. The Haugh unit, shell thickness and egg production in the Met- group were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than in the NC group. In conclusion, these results revealed that dietary supplementation of appropriate Met could substantially improve the growth performance, host amino acid metabolism and intestinal development and continuously improve the laying performance and thus boost the health of growing hens.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the safety and the beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with Boswellia serrata (Bs) and Salix alba (Sa) in Leghorn hens during the critical pre-laying and laying phases. A total of 120 pullets, 17 weeks of age, were assigned to two groups (Control—C; Treated—T, n = 60 each). For 12 weeks, the T group received a diet supplemented with 0.3% of dry extracts of Bs (5%) and Sa (5%). The study lasted 19 weeks. Productive performance, serum analytes, H/L ratio, IgA and anti-IBV antibodies were investigated. Water intake was significantly higher, while body and egg weight was significantly lower for the T group (p < 0.05). No other differences were detected in performance parameters, serum analytes, IgA and H/L ratio excluding t0, with a significantly (p < 0.05) higher H/R ratio and higher titers of anti-IBV antibody for the T group. Overall, the data obtained in this study show that the supplementation with Bs and Sa was safe and resulted in an increase in water consumption, a decrease in egg weight, and a sedative effect in the hens. In the future, it would be interesting to test this supplement in hens reared on intensive farms.

Abstract
Poultry nutritionists continually strive for more “precision” nutritional programs that provide the exact balance of nutrients that maximize broiler growth performance without economically and environmentally costly excesses. Many factors affect the precise amount and balance of nutrients needed by the broiler, including genetics, age, sex, and environment. Furthermore, broilers in intensive rearing environments will almost always be subjected to some degree of enteric stress that can alter nutrient needs. Exposure to enteric pathogens such as Eimeria spp., the intestinal parasites that cause avian coccidiosis, induces physical damage to the intestinal epithelium and activates immune responses, ultimately resulting in the repartitioning of amino acids (AA) in response to these prioritized demands. Even without any pathogenic challenge, the intestine has an already high demand for many AA, with 30 to 100% of dietary AA extracted during first pass intestinal metabolism. In many cases, increasing dietary protein from intact proteins has been shown to be a viable option to ameliorate impaired AA digestion and absorption and heightened need for certain AA of birds under an enteric stress. However, increasing dietary protein often results in concomitant increases in indigestible protein and carbohydrates that can stimulate the overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria (i.e., Clostridium perfringens). Alternative options to increase dietary AA levels are to increase all feed-grade, free AA (e.g., Met, Lys, Thr, Val), or specific individual feed-grade AA. Therefore, the objectives of this paper are to discuss precision nutrition, the dietary AA demands of the intestine, consequences of coccidiosis on AA needs of the intestine, and formulation approaches to meet these altered needs. In summary, increased dietary protein met by intact proteins has consistently demonstrated its benefits during an Eimeria spp. infection; however, to further the goal of precision nutritional programs, feeding higher levels of a specific AA to support desired functions such as intestinal recovery or immune function for birds experiencing an enteric stress still require further evaluation.

Abstract
The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of low crude protein diets supplemented with arginine, glutamine, methionine, and/or threonine on apparent ileal digestibility of amino acids, intestinal morphology, intestinal permeability, gene expression of nutrient transporters, and tight junction proteins of broiler chickens challenged with mixed Eimeria spp. A total of five hundred seventy-six, 12-day-old male broiler chickens were allocated into 8 treatments, and 6 replicate cages of 12 chickens per cage. This experiment included a nonchallenged control (NC) fed regular corn-soybean meal-based diet (Regular diet, 19% crude protein), an Eimeria-challenged control (CC) fed Regular diet, an Eimeria challenge group fed low-crude protein diet (LCP, 16% crude protein), 4 Eimeria challenge groups fed low-crude protein diet supplemented with 0.75% arginine, glutamine, methionine, and threonine, respectively (ARG, GLN, MET, and THR), and an Eimeria challenge group fed low-crude protein diet with 0.75% supplemented arginine, glutamine, methionine, and threonine collectively as a combination group (COMB). On d 14, birds in the challenge groups were gavaged with a mixed Eimeria spp. solution containing 12,500 oocysts of E. maxima, 12,500 oocysts of E. tenella, and 62,500 oocysts of E. acervulina. The results showed that the Eimeria challenge reduced overall growth performance, but the LCP had no adverse impacts on intestinal health and growth of Eimeria-infected birds compared to the CC. Additionally, supplementation of crystalline arginine, glutamine, methionine, and threonine improved the apparent ileal digestibility of these specific amino acids on 6 dpi. Moreover, the THR treatment increased villus height in the duodenum. The ARG treatment decreased intestinal permeability and gene expression of amino acid transporters, whereas the GLN and THR treatments both reversed adverse effects of coccidiosis on gene expression of tight junction protein (claudin 1). However, the MET and COMB treatments exacerbated infection severity of coccidiosis. In summary, adding 0.75% of arginine, glutamine, or threonine in a low crude protein diet can improve the intestinal health of birds challenged with a mild coccidia infection.

Abstract
Infectious diseases represent one of the most critical threats to animal production worldwide. Due to the rise of pathogen resistance and consumer concern about chemical-free and environmentally friendly productions, the use of antimicrobials drugs is no longer desirable. The close relationship between nutrition and infection has led to numerous studies about livestock. The impact of feeding strategies, including synthetic amino acid supplementation, on host response to various infections has been investigated in different livestock animals. This systematic review provides a synthesis of the experimental studies on the interactions between synthetic amino acid supplementation and immune response to infectious diseases in livestock. Following PRISMA guidelines, quantitative research was conducted using two literature databases, PubMed and Web of Science. The eligibility criteria for the research articles were: (1) the host is a livestock animal; (2) the supplementation with at least one synthetic amino acid; (3) at least one mediator of immunity is measured; (4) at least one production trait is measured. Data were extracted from 58 selected studies. Articles on poultry were the most numerous; few contained experiments using ruminants and pigs. Most of the authors hypothesized that synthetic amino acid supplementation would particularly improve the animals' immune response against intracellular pathogens. An increase in T and natural killer lymphocytes and macrophages activation, intracellular redox state, lymphocytes proliferation and antibodies production were the most described immune mechanisms associated with synthetic amino acid supplementation. Most of the selected studies focused on three amino acids (methionine, threonine and arginine), all of which are associated with a significant improvement of the host immune response. The use of synthetic amino acid supplementation appears as an encouraging perspective for livestock infectious disease management, and research must concentrate on more analytical studies using these three amino acids.

Abstract
Background Two experiments were conducted to compare the growth-promoting (experiment 1), protective, and immunostimulatory effects (experiment 2) of salinomycin, probiotic, a vitamin-selenium complex, and Ferulago angulata hydroalcoholic extract (FAE) against coccidiosis in broilers. In each experiment, 350 1-day-old broiler chickens were equally divided in 7 groups: uninfected negative control (NC); infected positive control (PC); or PC supplemented with salinomycin (Sal); probiotic (Pro); a combination of vitamin E, vitamin C, and selenium (ECSe); 200 mg/kg of FAE (FAE200); or 400 mg/kg of FAE (FAE400). All these groups (except NC) were challenged via oral gavage with oocysts of mixed Eimeria spp. on d 10 (experiment 1) or d 14 (experiment 2). Results In the first trial, all treatments improved growth and feed conversion compared with the PC group, where the best values were noticed in the NC and FAE400 groups throughout the entire experimental period (d 1 to 42). Further, a lower mortality rate (P < 0.05) was observed in the NC, Sal, and FAE400 groups as compared to that in the PC group. In the second trial, intestinal lesion scores and total oocyst numbers were reduced in the Sal, Pro, and FAE400 groups compared to the PC group, albeit all coccidiosis-challenged groups had higher oocyst shedding (P < 0.05) compared to NC group. Immune responses revealed that among challenged birds, those fed diets Pro, ECSE, and FAE400 had significantly higher primary total and secondary total and IgG antibody titers against sheep red blood cells, serum and cecum specific IgG levels, and serum IFN-γ concentration than the PC group. Conclusions Considering the results, dietary FAE, especially at high levels of inclusion in broiler diet (400 mg/kg), could beneficially influence growth performance and immune status under coccidiosis challenge, which was comparable to that of probiotic supplement.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effects of total sulfur amino acid (TSAA) levels on the performance and intestinal health of broilers challenged with Eimeria spp. A total of 432 one-day-old off-sex Cobb 500 male chicks were randomly assigned to a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (6 replicates/12 birds), with diets and Eimeria challenge as the main factors. The diets were as follows: 70% (no methionine [Met] supplementation), 85, and 100% TSAA, supplemented with L-Met. At day 14, the challenged birds (n = 216) were orally gavaged with a pool of Eimeria acervulina, Eimeria maxima, and Eimeria tenella sporulated oocysts, and the unchallenged birds (n = 216) received water. At 6 and 12 D post inoculation (dpi), performance and intestinal health were evaluated. The challenge, regardless of diets, significantly impaired the performance, intestinal villi height, villus-to-crypt ratio, and ileal digestibility of dry matter, energy, and crude protein (CP) and modulated the tight junction protein (TJP) expression throughout the experiment. Moreover, the superoxide dismutase activity was increased, whereas the reduced glutathione (GSH)-to-oxidized glutathione (GSSG) ratio was decreased by the challenge at 6 dpi. Regardless of the challenge, the 70% TSAA diet reduced the body weight and feed intake in all phases, whereas the ileal digestibility of CP was higher in birds fed with the 70% TSAA diet than in those fed with the 100% TSAA diet at 6 dpi. No major differences were observed among the diets with regard to the intestinal histomorphology and TJP expression, and birds fed with the 100% TSAA diet had the highest GSH concentration at 12 dpi. Few interactions were observed, and the Met supplementation counteracted the negative effects of the Eimeria challenge on GSH concentration when 85 and 100% of TSAA levels were reached. Overall, the Eimeria challenge had a negative impact on growth and intestinal health. Moreover, the supplementation of L-Met until either 85 or 100% of TSAA levels were reached was enough to assure good performance and intestinal health in birds challenged or not challenged with Eimeria spp.
