Influence of increasing the calcium and magnesium content of the drinking water on performance and bone and plasma minerals of broiler chickens

Supplementation of poultry feeds with dietary zinc and other minerals and compounds to mitigate nitrogen emissions--a review

One of the environmental challenges that the poultry industry has been faced with is ammonia emission from manure. One way to reduce nitrogen excretion and emissions is supplementing dietary trace minerals to inhibit the activity of microbial uricase, a key enzyme converting nitrogen compounds in the manure into ammonia. Several dietary minerals are commercially available as economic alternatives for reducing ammonia emissions in poultry. In this review, we discuss different mineral elements including zinc as feed amendment minerals that could be used to reduce ammonia emission. Issues discussed include potential for inhibiting microbial uricase, dietary supplementation levels, growth performance, toxicity, their influence on manure nitrogen emission, and potential mineral accumulation in soil. In addition, we discuss other minerals and compounds that have the potential to reduce ammonia volatilization by inhibiting microbial uricase and growth of uric acid-utilizing microorganisms.

Zinc in a combination with magnesium helps reducing negative effects of heat stress in quails

The objective of this study was to investigate whether zinc (Zn) along with magnesium (Mg) is effective in alleviating the negative effects of heat stress in Japanese quails. One hundred and twenty 10-day-old healthy Japanese quails were randomly assigned to four treatment groups, three replicates of ten birds each. The birds were fed either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with either 30 mg of Zn/kg of diet, 600 mg of Mg/kg of diet, or 30 mg of Zn + 600 mg of Mg/kg of diet. The birds were kept under a high temperature (35 degrees C) for 8 h/day. Feed consumption was greatest with the combination of Zn and Mg supplementation (P < 0.01). Hot and chilled dressing percentages were greater (P < 0.05) with Zn- and Mg-supplemented diets. Concentrations of plasma malondialdehyde were lower (P < 0.01) with both Zn and Mg supplementations. Mg concentrations in the serum remained similar with either Zn or Mg supplements in the diet (P > 0.05). Serum glucose concentrations were lowest in birds fed the basal diet. Supplementing a combination of Zn and Mg may offer a potential protective management practice in preventing heat stress-related depression in performance of quails.

Magnesium in Animal Nutrition

Magnesium (Mg) supplementation remarkably improves the digestibility of feed. In cows and sows, it has improved the reproduction and shortened the service period. In broilers it increased weight gain, and it has increased egg production of laying hens. In addition, increasing Mg intake benefits the quality of breeding eggs and improves hatching yield. However, increasing Mg intake has not altered visceral composition of embryos, although brain and liver might have the capacity to store Mg at intake above the requirement.

Evaluation of low-phytate corn and barley on broiler chick performance

Grains produced by low-phytate barley and corn isolines homozygous for each species' respective low phytic acid 1-1 allele were compared to grain produced by near-isogenic normal or wild-type barley and corn in broiler chick feeds. Cobb x Cobb (384) chicks were used in a 10-d study. A randomized complete block design with a factorial arrangement of 2 x 2 x 3 was used with 4 replicates (8 chicks / replicate) per treatment. Twelve isocaloric and isonitrogenous treatment diets were formulated to contain 2 types of grain (barley and corn), 2 levels of grain (40% and 60%), and 3 sources of available P (wild-type grain, wild-type P-supplemented grain, and low-phytate grain). Growth parameters, bone parameters, total bone mineral, and apparent digestibilities were measured. The mean growth and bone responses were 1) higher for barley diets compared to corn diets, 2) higher for 60% grain inclusion compared to 40%, 3) higher for low-phytate compared to wild-type grains, and 4) not different for low-phytate compared to P-supplemented wild-type grain diets. Chicks fed low-phytate-based diets excreted 33 and 43% less P than chicks fed wild-type and P-supplemented wild-type diets, respectively. Correlations between percentage bone ash, total bone ash, and bone strength indicated a strong relationship and appear to support the use of bone strength analysis as a simpler method than ash content determination as an indication of P status. Feeding low-phytate grains will reduce the need for supplemental P in chick diets.

Effects of dietary magnesium excess in White Leghorn hens

The effects of excess dietary magnesium on White Leghorn laying hens were investigated in two experiments and a third experiment looked at the effect of dietary phosphorus on excess magnesium in the diet. In Experiment 1, magnesium levels of 0.15, 0.8, and 1.2% were fed in a diet containing 2.5% calcium to hens 30 wk of age for 5 wk. A control diet with 3.5% calcium and 0.15% magnesium was also fed. In Experiment 2, hens 65 wk of age fed 3.5% calcium were fed dietary magnesium levels of 0.15, 0.36, 0.53, 0.76, and 0.91% for 4 wk. In these two experiments, excess magnesium reduced egg production, decreased feed consumption, decreased body weight, decreased percentage eggshell, reduced plasma calcium, and increased plasma magnesium and tibia magnesium but changes seen in tibia weight, percentage ash, and tibia calcium and phosphorus were variable. More changes from feeding excess magnesium were seen in the young, high producing hens in Experiment 1. In Experiment 3, hens 50 wk of age were fed a marginal calcium level (2.5%) with an excess of magnesium (0.8%) and a control level of available phosphorus (0.45%) and this was compared to a low (0.25%) and a high level (0.9%) of available phosphorus for a 4-wk experimental period. At the end of the experimental period, hens fed low phosphorus had lower egg production and lower feed consumption than the hens fed higher levels of phosphorus. Body weight was lower in the hens fed the two lower levels of phosphorus. Percentage eggshell was lower than the controls when fed low phosphorus and higher when fed high phosphorus. These results suggest that high phosphorus diets are better than low phosphorus diets when excess magnesium is fed to laying hens. Further study is needed to investigate the role of phosphorus when excess magnesium is fed.

Calcium supplementation of hen drinking water

Two experiments with White Leghorn hens (42 and 56 wk old, respectively) examined the effects of calcium supplementation through drinking water in the presence of adequate and inadequate dietary calcium. Each experiment was of 28 d duration with six replicate pens of five individually caged hens in each treatment. Treatments were a combination of either 2.25 or 3.5% dietary calcium coupled with tap water or water supplemented with .2% calcium from calcium lactate. In both studies, specific gravity of eggs was significantly improved when low dietary calcium was supplemented with .2% calcium in the drinking water. Egg production and egg weight were not influenced by waterborne calcium. Daily water intake was reduced by calcium lactate in all cases. Feed consumption was also depressed by waterborne calcium in both studies when 3.5% dietary calcium was given, and in Experiment 1 when 2.25% was fed. Waterborne calcium as calcium lactate was found to be effectively utilized for eggshell quality improvement when dietary sources were inadequate.
