Influence of Virginiamycin on yield of broilers fed four levels of energy

Effect of dietary antibiotic, probiotic and prebiotic as growth promoters, on growth performance, carcass characteristics and hematological indices of broiler chickens

This experiment was conducted for comparison the effects of antibiotic (flavomycin), probiotic (primalac), prebiotic (Biolex-MB) and mixture ofprobiotic and prebiotic (primalac plus Biolex-MB) as dietary growth promoter on growth performance, carcass characteristics and hematological indices of broiler chickens. Three hundred day old Ross 308 broilers were equally distributed into 30 floor pens and reared for 42 day. A basal diet was formulated covering the recommendations of NRC (1994) for starter (0-21 days) and grower (22-42 days) periods and considered as control diet. Four tested diets were formulated by supplemented the basal control diet with antibiotic (flavomycin), probiotic (primalac), prebiotic (Biolex-MB) and mixture ofprimalac plus Biolex-MB, respectively. Six replicates were used for each treatment. The results of present study showed that all growth promoters used was improved growth indices of Ross 308 broilers. The highest significant (p<0.05) values of carcass and thigh were recorded for broilers fed diet supplemented with flavomycin. The highest (p>0.05) value of breast was recorded for broilers fed the diet supplemented with primalac, meanwhile the lower value were showed for birds fed either diet or diet supplemented with Biolex-MB. The percent of carcass and cuts followed the same trend. Hematological parameter including cholesterol was recorded the highest (p>0.05) values groups fed the diets either control or supplemented with flavomycin, meanwhile the lower value was showed for bird fed diet supplemented primalac plus Biolex-MB. Triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL) were recorded the highest concentration for bird fed both control and diet supplemented with flavomycin groups while least concentration was found for bird fed diet supplemented with primalac. The results of present study revealed that probiotic and prebiotic as growth promoters can use as alternatives non-antibiotic feed additives to their free harmful side effects on the consumers and to improve broiler chickens growth indices.

Growth promoting antibiotics in food animal production: an economic analysis

OBJECTIVE

Considerable controversy persists regarding the use of human antibiotics to promote growth in animals raised for food. The authors examined the economic effect of removing antibiotics used for growth promotion in commercial broiler chickens.

METHODS

The authors utilized data published by the Perdue company, the fourth largest poultry producer in the United States, in which a non-randomized controlled trial of growth-promoting antibiotic (GPA) use was conducted with seven million broiler chickens to evaluate the impact of removing GPAs on production.

RESULTS

Positive production changes were associated with GPA use, but were insufficient to offset the cost of the antibiotics. The net effect of using GPAs was a lost value of 0.0093 dollars per chicken (about 0.45% of total cost). Based upon these data, the authors found no basis for the claim that the use of GPAs lowers the cost of production. Note that this study does not include veterinary cost changes or changes in performance variability associated with the removal of GPAs.

CONCLUSIONS

This economic analysis is the first study to the authors' knowledge utilizing large-scale empirical data collected by U.S. industry, in which it is demonstrated that the use of GPAs in poultry production is associated with economic losses to the producers. These data are of considerable importance in the ongoing national debate concerning the continued use of antibiotics for growth promotion of food animals. Based on the industry study and the resulting economic impact, the use of GPAs in U.S. poultry production should be reconsidered.

Effects of virginiamycin and a mannanoligosaccharide-virginiamycin shuttle program on the growth and performance of large white female turkeys

Shuttle programs involving dietary supplementation of mannanoligosaccharides (MOS) and virginiamycin (VM) were evaluated in turkeys by their effects on growth performance, body weight uniformity, and carcass yield characteristics. Diets containing no growth promoter (control), VM (22 mg/kg), or a shuttle program (MOS-VM) of MOS (0 to 6 wk of age at 500 mg/ kg) and VM (6 to 14 wk of age at 22 mg/kg) were fed to Hybrid female turkeys. All diets were formulated to exceed NRC nutrient requirements. Each treatment was assigned to 8 replicate floor pens containing 20 birds that were reared from 1 to 98 d of age. Body weights and feed consumption were recorded at 3-wk intervals, and mortality and culled birds were recorded daily. At the conclusion of the trial, 2 birds per pen were randomly chosen for carcass yield analysis. Feeding VM alone significantly (P < 0.05) increased body weight compared with control fed birds during all periods. The MOS-VM shuttle program resulted in early growth depression for birds less than 3 wk of age, possibly influenced by an unplanned cold stress, but better growth than the nonmedicated control birds after 6 wk of age. Birds fed VM had superior (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio from 0 to 3 wk, which persisted until 14 wk (P < 0.10). There were no treatment effects on overall feed consumption, uniformity, mortality, or cull rate. Processing yields or weight of various parts were also unaffected by treatment.

Virginiamycin and caloric density effects on live performance, blood serum metabolite concentration, and carcass composition of broilers reared in thermoneutral and cycling ambient temperatures

One experiment utilizing Cobb x Cobb male broilers was conducted to evaluate virginiamycin (VM; 0, 15, 20 ppm) and diet caloric density (CD; 2,945, 3,200 AMEn/kg) effects on broiler live performance, blood serum metabolites, and carcass composition. The starter period exposed birds to recommended brooding conditions, whereas from 3 to 7 wk birds were exposed to thermoneutral (TN, 24 C) or cycling temperature (CT, 24 to 35 C) environments (E). During the 21-d starter period, VM levels and high CD increased (P < 0.05) BW gain (G) and gain:feed (G:F) improved (P < 0.05) with 20 ppm VM and high CD. During 3 to 7 wk, CT reduced (P < 0.05) most live performance and carcass variables as well as heat production (HP) and energetic efficiency whereas energy content per gram of tissue increased. The main effect of VM and CD on blood serum constituents was not significant; however, CT decreased (P < 0.05) serum Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, albumin, and total protein. Within CT, G increased (P < 0.05) with high CD and with the 15 ppm VM combination, whereas within TN, G was unaffected by CD, but increased (P < 0.05) with the 20 ppm VM and low CD combination compared with the control. High CD increased (P < 0.05) BW, G, carcass weight, dressing percentage, carcass percentage fat, carcass dry matter, carcass energy content per bird, HP, fat, and protein gain but reduced (P < 0.05) carcass percentage protein and energetic efficiency. Carcass weight, breast yield, fat, and protein gains as well as dry matter carcass energy content increased (P < 0.05) with VM compared with controls. The reduced (P < 0.05) calorie intake and HP with concomitant increase (P < 0.05) in calorie gain with 20 ppm VM increased (P < 0.05) caloric efficiency. In summary, the results suggest that VM improves bird performance by reducing HP and that reduced HP during high CT improves body temperature homeostasis.

Comparison of different anticoccidials on processing characteristics and parts yield of broiler chickens

Broilers were grown to 42 days of age on diets supplemented with salinomycin (60 mg/kg), monensin (99 mg/kg), or halofuginone (3 mg/kg) and continued on unmedicated diets to 49 days of age. There were no significant (P greater than .05) differences among anticoccidials in final body weight, feed conversion, or mortality rates. Samples of birds were processed for dressing percentage and parts yield. Both males and females fed salinomycin had significantly higher breast meat yield as a percentage of postchill weight than those fed halofuginone but not those fed monensin; differences were not significant for breast meat yield of males or females fed monensin or halofuginone. Males fed halofuginone had significantly heavier leg quarters than those fed salinomycin but not those fed monensin. Females fed salinomycin had significantly higher water uptake during chill than those fed monensin or halofuginone. Results of the present study indicate that the anticoccidial used in growing broilers may influence some carcass yield parameters.

Influence of virginiamycin on growth and efficiency of large white turkeys

Efficacy of virginiamycin (22 mg/kg) in combination with no drug, amprolium, carbarsone, halofuginone, or monensin, was studied. Male and female turkeys were raised to market age in five experiments conducted from 1983 to 1987. Body weights and feed:gain responses to virginiamycin for males and females were positive and significant (P less than .05). Virginiamycin resulted in mean 5.2 and 6.3% body weight responses and 3.3 and 2.2% feed:gain responses for males at 19 or 20 wk of age and for females at 16 or 17 wk of age, respectively. Mortality rates were low in all studies, and were not influenced by virginiamycin. In a processing study, virginiamycin in combination with halofuginone did not affect shrinkage, yield, or market grade. Feed was utilized by males and females 3.9 and 3.0%, respectively, more efficiently than expected with dietary virginiamycin, compared with results predicted by a simulation modeling technique. Profitability was considerably greater with dietary virginiamycin using actual data than with simulated feed consumption data.

Effects of different antibiotics on performance, processing characteristics, and parts yield of broiler chickens

Broilers were grown to 49 days of age on diets supplemented with bambermycins (BAM, 2.2 ppm), bacitracin methylene disalicylate (BMD, 27.5 ppm), virginiamycin (VM, 11 ppm), or an unmedicated control. Samples of birds were processed for dressing percentage and parts yield. There were no significant (P greater than .05) effects of antibiotics on final body weight, feed conversion, or mortality. In male broilers, BMD and VM significantly (P less than or equal to .05) increased dressing percentage and percentage yield and reduced the skeletal rack as a percentage of postchill weight compared to those fed the nonmedicated control. All antibiotics significantly increased breast skin weight and breast skin as a percentage of postchill weight of as compared with those fed the unmedicated control. In female broilers, BAM and BMD significantly increased dressing percentage and percentage yield and increased breast weight and breast as percentage of postchill weight as compared with those fed the unmedicated control diet. Females fed BMD also had significantly heavier leg quarters and breast skin than those fed the unmediated control. Females fed VM had increased breast skin weight and breast skin as a percentage of postchill weight than those fed the unmedicated control. The results of the present study indicate that antibiotics may influence dressing percentage and parts yield in the absence of improvements in body weight gain or feed utilization.
