Efficacy of a Biocidal Paint in Controlling Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and Improving the Quality of Air and Litter in Poultry Houses

Effective disinfection and disinsection are the keys to successful operation of modern poultry farms and the safety of poultry products. The cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses are important aspects of farm hygiene management. The correct execution of all steps of cleaning, disinfection, and disinsection procedures and the use of appropriate products are crucial for the prevention and control of zoonotic and animal diseases. In this study it was assumed that a water-based slow-release biocidal paint could be useful in controlling insect pests such as Alphitobius diaperinus and reducing microbiological contamination of air and litter in poultry houses and have a beneficial effect on microclimate in poultry houses. Therefore, the locations of A. diaperinus in the poultry houses, the microbiological contamination of air and litter, as well as the microclimatic conditions in the houses and the physicochemical parameters of the litter were evaluated. The results suggest that the tested biocidal paint could be an effective alternative to other insecticides and disinfectants. Additionally, the research is of a practical nature and may be very useful for poultry producers in controlling A. diaperinus populations and maintaining proper hygiene in poultry houses. Further research is needed.

Litter Management Strategies and Their Impact on the Environmental and Respiratory Microbiome Might Influence Health in Poultry

Aerial and respiratory tract-associated bacterial diversity has been scarcely studied in broiler production systems. This study examined the relationship between the environmental air and birds’ respiratory microbiome, considering a longitudinal sampling. Total viable bacteria and coliforms in the air were quantified, and the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced from tracheal and air samples obtained through a novelty protocol. Air results showed a decrease in coliforms over time. However, at week 3, we reported an increase in coliforms (from 143 to 474 CFUc/m3) associated with litter management. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene results indicated a distinctive air microbial community, associated primarily with Bacillota phylum particularly of the Bacilli class (>58%), under all conditions. Tracheal results indicated a predominance of Escherichia coli/Shigella at the beginning of the productive cycle, shifting toward the middle and end of the cycle to Gallibacterium. However, at week 3, the dominance of Escherichia coli/Shigella (>99.5%) associated with litter aeration by tumbling stood out. Tracheal and air samples displayed a statistically different community structure, but shared differentially abundant features through time: Enterococcus, Gallibacterium, and Romboutsia ilealis. These results indicate the impact of production management protocols on the birds’ respiratory system that should be considered a breakpoint in poultry farm health.

Review of litter turning during a grow-out as a litter management practice to achieve dry and friable litter in poultry production

Maintaining dry litter that chickens can “work” is a key objective for successful meat chicken production as it reduces the likelihood of health and welfare issues by breaking down and working excreta and contributing to the water evaporation process. Litter turning is a practice that may help reduce moisture content within the litter by accelerating the drying process when it is combined with effective ventilation. However, information and research about the practice and the effects it could have on the health and well-being of meat chickens (broilers) are minimal. A recent survey of Australian meat chicken growers reiterated the concerns they have about its impact on chicken well-being, but it also demonstrated how growers thought it could enhance the effectiveness of their operation. The aim of this review paper is to identity information relevant to litter turning and the potential effects of this practice on litter quality, ammonia emissions, litter moisture, and animal welfare. This review demonstrates the need for additional research to validate perceptions and address potential concerns and impacts that this practice may have on broiler production. Closing this knowledge gap will improve litter turning practices leading to safer and more consistent outcomes.

Influence of Poultry Litter Amendment Type and Irrigation Events on Survival and Persistence of Salmonella Newport

ABSTRACT

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Newport is a bacterial foodborne pathogen isolated from several environmental reservoirs on the Delmarva Peninsula and has been associated with several produce-related outbreaks. However, little is known about specific interactions between Salmonella Newport and soil amendments used as fertilizers. The purpose of this study was to determine Salmonella Newport persistence and resuscitation in raw poultry litter (PLR), a common biological soil amendment, and in soils containing poultry litter-based (heat-treated poultry pellets [HTPP]) or chemical fertilizer (urea [U]) amendments to provide equivalent levels of nitrogen to the soil. Inoculated samples were stored in a growth chamber and irrigated regularly over 4 weeks. Soil samples were collected every week for 4 weeks to determine moisture content and surviving Salmonella Newport populations (log CFU per gram dry weight). Data were analyzed by using a one-way analysis of variance and Student's t test. The PLR supported significantly higher (5.07 log CFU/g dry weight [gdw]) populations of Salmonella Newport than HTPP only (1.70 log CFU/gdw). However, PLR-amended (PRLA) soil (2.5 log CFU/gdw) samples had significantly (P < 0.05) lower Salmonella Newport populations compared with HTPP-amended (4.5 log CFU/gdw) and U-amended (4.0 log CFU/gdw) soil samples. The effect of irrigation on Salmonella Newport population levels in PRLA soils was significant, and in a comparative study, the overall increase in the pathogen levels in U-amended soil (mean = 1.12 log CFU/gdw) was significantly greater than that in PLRA soil (mean = 0.54 log CFU/gdw), whereas that in HTPP-amended soil (0.80 log CFU/gdw) was not significantly different from PLRA soil.

Molecular Detection of Multidrug Resistant Salmonella Species Isolated from Broiler Farm in Bangladesh

Multidrug resistant (MDR) Salmonella are a leading cause of foodborne diseases and serious human health concerns worldwide. In this study we detected MDR Salmonella in broiler chicken along with the resistance genes and class 1 integron gene intl1. A total of 100 samples were collected from broiler farms comprising 50 cloacal swabs, 35 litter and 15 feed samples. Overall prevalence of Salmonella was 35% with the highest detected in cloacal swabs. Among the Salmonella, 30 isolates were confirmed as S. enterica serovar Typhimurium using molecular methods of PCR. Disk diffusion susceptibility test revealed that all the Salmonella were classified as MDR with the highest resistance to tetracycline (97.14%), chloramphenicol (94.28%), ampicillin (82.85%) and streptomycin (77.14%). The most prevalent resistance genotypes were tetA (97.14%), floR (94.28%), bla_TEM-1 (82.85%) and aadA1 (77.14%). In addition, among the MDR Salmonella, 20% were positive for class 1 integron gene (intl1). As far as we know, this is the first study describing the molecular basis of antibiotic resistance in MDR Salmonella from broiler farms in Bangladesh. In addition to tetA, floR, bla_TEM-1, aadA1 and intl1 were also detected in the isolated MDR Salmonella. The detection of MDR Salmonella in broiler chicken carrying intl1 is of serious public health concern because of their zoonotic nature and possibilities to enter into the food chain.
