Abstract
Hydrogel filaments were manufactured using wet spinning technique, incorporating variations in the concentrations of sodium alginate, gelatin, and calcium chloride (crosslinking agent). The combination of biopolymer concentrations was determined using design of experiments (DoE) approach. The resulting filaments were produced from the developed hydrogels. Tensile and vertical strength analyses of the filaments were conducted using an electromechanical extensor. Atomic force microscopy was employed to evaluate the roughness, viscoelasticity, retraction, and deflection of the hydrogels. By employing DoE, a total of seventeen different combinations of biopolymers and crosslinkers were generated to construct the hydrogels. The filaments exhibited variations in electromechanical traction (measured in kPa) and produced distinct stress peaks. Furthermore, diverse roughness values were observed among the tested materials, with the combinations featuring higher concentrations of sodium alginate displaying the highest Young's modulus. This study demonstrates that manipulating the concentrations of biopolymers and crosslinking agents can modulate the micro and nanomechanical properties of biopolymeric filaments.

Abstract
Microbial infections based on drug-resistant pathogenic organisms following surgery or trauma and uncontrolled bleeding are the main causes of increased mortality from trauma worldwide. The prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens has led to a significant increase in medical costs and poses a great threat to the normal life of people. This is an important issue in the field of biomedicine, and the emergence of new antimicrobial materials hydrogels holds great promise for solving this problem. Hydrogel is an important material with good biocompatibility, water absorption, oxygen permeability, adhesion, degradation, self-healing, corrosion resistance, and controlled release of drugs as well as structural diversity. Bacteria-disturbing hydrogels have important applications in the direction of surgical treatment, wound dressing, medical device coating, and tissue engineering. This paper reviews the classification of antimicrobial hydrogels, the current status of research, and the potential of antimicrobial hydrogels for one application in biomedicine, and analyzes the current research of hydrogels in biomedical applications from five aspects: metal-loaded hydrogels, drug-loaded hydrogels, carbon-material-loaded hydrogels, hydrogels with fixed antimicrobial activity and biological antimicrobial hydrogels, and provides an outlook on the high antimicrobial activity, biodegradability, biocompatibility, injectability, clinical applicability and future development prospects of hydrogels in this field.

Abstract
Physical and chemical cross-linked hydrogels combining N, N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBA)-grafted starch (MBAS) and sorbitol were successfully prepared and encapsulated with eugenol in this work. The dense porous structure with diameter of 10-15 μm and strong skeleton after restructuring inside the hydrogel was confirmed by SEM. The band shifts between 3258 cm-1 and 3264 cm-1 clarified the presence of a large number of hydrogen bonds in physical and chemical cross-linked hydrogels. The robust structure of the hydrogel was confirmed by mechanical and thermal property measurements. Molecular docking techniques were used to help understand the bridging pattern between three raw materials and to assess the advantageous conformation, which demonstrate sorbitol is beneficial to improve the characteristics of textural hydrogel by the formation of hydrogen bonds, creating a denser network, structural recombination and new intermolecular hydrogen bonds between starch and sorbitol afforded considerably junction zones. Compared to ordinary starch-based hydrogels, eugenol-loaded starch-sorbitol hydrogels (ESSG) exhibited a more attractive internal structure, swelling properties, viscoelasticity. Moreover, the ESSG showed excellent antimicrobial activity for typical undesired microorganisms in foods.

Abstract
The growing impact of infections and the rapid emergence of antibiotic resistance represent a public health concern worldwide. The exponential development in the field of biomaterials and its multiple applications can offer a solution to the problems that derive from these situations. In this sense, antimicrobial hydrogels represent a promising opportunity with multiple translational expectations in the medical management of infectious diseases due to their unique physicochemical and biological properties as well as for drug delivery in specific areas. Hydrogels are three-dimensional cross-linked networks of hydrophilic polymers that can absorb and retain large amounts of water or biological fluids. Moreover, antimicrobial hydrogels (AMH) present good biocompatibility, low toxicity, availability, viscoelasticity, biodegradability, and antimicrobial properties. In the present review, we collect and discuss the most promising strategies in the development of AMH, which are divided into hydrogels with inherent antimicrobial activity and antimicrobial agent-loaded hydrogels based on their composition. Then, we present an overview of the main translational applications: wound healing, tissue engineering and regeneration, drug delivery systems, contact lenses, 3D printing, biosensing, and water purification.
