Photodegradation of Rhodamine B over Biomass-Derived Activated Carbon Supported CdS Nanomaterials under Visible Irradiation

Synergistic effect of photoelectrochemical aptasensor based on staggered gap ZnO/BiFeO3 heterojunction coupled with cDNA-CdS sensitizer enabling ultrasensitive assay of kanamycin

Using staggered-gap ZnO/BiFeO3 heterojunction as photoactive materials and cDNA-CdS as the sensitizer for sensitive Kanamycin (KAN) detection, we have created a unique signal-off biosensing platform. The ZnO/BiFeO3 heterojunction provides active sites for aptamer loading and enhances photocurrent responsiveness. Rapid interfacial charge transfer and the separation efficiency of photo-generated carriers are enhanced by sensitization of the ternary heterojunction ZnO/BiFeO3/CdS. Signal-amplified quenching occurs when sensitizers are replaced with sterically hindered KAN. Because of the aptamer's greater affinity for KAN, the replacement of CdS causes a decrease in photocurrent response. Additionally, the weakly conductive aptamer-KAN complex causes steric hindrance, which exacerbates the photoelectrochemical signal-damping effect even more. The photoelectrochemical aptasensor exhibits excellent selectivity and stability, detecting KAN within the range of 0.00005825-0.233 μg/mL with a detection limit of 0.0466 ng/mL (S/N = 3). This work demonstrates the potential of perovskite oxides and their heterostructures for advanced photoelectrochemical biosensing applications.

Recycling alkali lignin-derived biochar with adsorbed cadmium into cost-effective CdS/C photocatalyst for methylene blue removal

Cadmium (Cd)-enriched adsorbents wastes possess great environmental risk due to their large-scale accumulation and toxicity in the natural environment. Recycling spent Cd-enriched adsorbents into efficient catalysts for advanced applications could address the environmental issues and attain the carbon neutral goal. Herein, a facile strategy is developed for the first time to reutilize the alkali lignin (AL)-derived biochar (ALB) absorbed with Cd into cadmium sulphide (CdS)/C composite for the efficient methylene blue (MB) removal. The ALB is initially treated with Cd-containing solution, then the recycling ALB samples with adsorbed Cd are converted to the final CdS/C composite using NaS2 as the sulphurizing reagent for vulcanization reaction. The optimal ALB400 demonstrates a high adsorption capacity of 576.0 mg g-1 for Cd removal. Then the converted CdS/C composite shows an efficient MB removal efficiency of 94%. The photodegradation mechanism is mainly attributed to carbon components in the CdS/C composite as electron acceptor promoting the separation of photoelectrons/holes and slowing down the abrasion of CdS particles. The enhanced charge transfer and contact between the carrier and the active site thus improves the removal performance and reusability. This work not only develops a method for removing Cd from wastewater effectively and achieving the waste resource utilization but also further offers a significant guidance to use other kinds of spent heavy metal removal adsorbents for the construction of low-cost and high value-added functional materials.

Aluminium doped ZnO nanostructures for efficient photodegradation of indigo carmine and azo carmine G in solar irradiation

Aluminium doped zinc oxide (AZO) nanomaterials (AlxZn1-xO) with x fraction varying as 0.02 and 0.04 were synthesized using the auto-combustion method using glycine as a fuel. The synthesized catalysts were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis), Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM). XRD results showed that synthesized materials possessed good crystallinity, while UV–VIS was employed to find the band gaps of synthesized materials. Raman was used to determine the vibrational modes in the synthesized nanoparticles, while TEM analysis was performed to study the morphology of the samples. Industrial effluents such as indigo carmine and azo carmine G were used to test the photodegradation ability of synthesised catalysts. Parameters such as the effect of catalyst loading, dye concentration and pH were studied. The reduction in crystallite size, band gap and increased lattice strain for the 4% AZO was the primary reason for the degradation in visible irradiation, degrading 97 and 99% equimolar concentrations of indigo carmine and azo carmine G in 140 min. The Al doped ZnO was found to be effective in faster degradation of dyes as compared to pure ZnO in presence of natural sunlight.

Superior incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of Mo-doped activated carbon supported CdS-sensitized solar cells

In this study, the performance of activated carbon (AC) produced from defatted black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) by chemical activation with zinc chloride (ZnCl₂) activator in photovoltaic application is evaluated. It is of great importance to increase the photovoltaic efficiency of cadmium sulfide (CdS)-based solar cells, which are widely used in photovoltaic applications, with AC support. The main purpose of the study is to determine how the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) of undoped and Mo-doped AC supported CdS semiconductor materials changes in the presence of AC support material and to interpret the observed effect in the light of literature. For these reasons, in the study, AC supported CdS (CdS/AC) (5%, 10%, and 15% by weight) and Mo-doped CdS/AC semiconductor materials with different molybdenum (Mo) concentrations (0.33%, 1%, 3%) are produced by chemical precipitation method. Produced CdS/AC and Mo-doped CdS/AC semiconductor materials are characterized by IPCE, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. Based on the result values, the optimum CdS concentration with the highest IPCE (%) value is determined as 10% (for CdS/AC). As a result of the experimental measurements, the optimum Mo concentration with the maximum IPCE (%) value is found as 1% (for Mo-doped CdS/AC). In particular, it is clear that an appreciable increase (from 4.70 to 39.00%) in IPCE (%) of 1% Mo-doped 10% CdS/AC semiconductor material is achieved when compared to pure CdS. Thus, the ability to increase the photovoltaic efficiency of CdS-based solar cells, which are widely used in photovoltaic applications, with AC support has been clearly demonstrated. This study presents a new strategy to increase the solar cell efficiency of semiconductor-based solar cell structures using biowaste-based AC supported CdS semiconductor materials.

Nanohybrid catalysts with porous structures for environmental remediation through photocatalytic degradation of emerging pollutants

Water supplies have been seriously challenged by new emerging pollutants, which are difficult to remove by traditional wastewater treatment. Thus, new technologies such as catalytic advanced oxidation processes have merged as suitable solutions; however, the drawbacks of typical catalysts limit their application. To overcome this issue, new materials with enhanced textural properties have been developed, showing that their porosity and chemical nature influence their potential as a catalyst. Herein, the recent progress in highly porous catalysts and their suitable deployment to effectively nano-remediate the polluted environmental matrices are reviewed in detail. First, following a brief introduction, several environmental pollutants of emerging concerns from different sectors, including pharmaceutical residues, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pesticides, and hazardous dyes are also introduced with relevant examples. To effectively tackle the sustainable remediation of emerging pollutants, this work also focuses on the multifunctional features of nanohybrid porous materials that act as catalysts constructs to degrade emerging pollutants. The influence of surface reactive centers, stability, bandgap energies, light absorption capacities, and pollutants adsorption capacities are also discussed. Successful examples of the employment of nanohybrid porous catalysts for the degradation of pharmaceutical pollutants, EDCs, pesticides, and hazardous dyes are summarized. Finally, some challenges faced by nanohybrid porous materials to achieve their potential application as advanced catalysts for environmental remediation have been identified and presented herein.

Bio-Inspired C/N/TiO2 Hybrid Composite Heterostructure: Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity under Visible Light

The hydrothermal treatment was used to create a natural hierarchical bio-inspired carbon and nitrogen-doped C/N/TiO2 hybrid composite. It is the goal of this work to investigate the photocatalytic activity of bio-inspired C/N/TiO2 hybrid composite. Techniques such as X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, FTIR, Raman, and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used to explore the structural, morphological, and photocatalysis characteristics of the bio-inspired C/N/TiO2 hybrid composite. By doping carbon and nitrogen, TiO2 nanotubes were able to improve the photocatalyst properties of the C/N/TiO2 hybrid composite, decrease the energy band gap (∼2.55 eV), and result in increased electron transfer efficiency when compared to pure TiO2. The photocatalytic degradation of pollutants (rhodamine B (RhB)) is made possible by the use of a bio-inspired C/N/TiO2 hybrid composite that has high interconnectivity and an easily accessible surface.

The Role of English as a Foreign Language Teachers' and Learners' Emotions and Language Achievement and Success

It is preserved that one of the noteworthy influential subjects of success and achievement is emotions, and enhancing emotions is dominant in promoting the language learning of students in the classroom. Although emotions are an integral part of the practices of both educators and students, their function has been sidelined due to the emphasis on intellectual instead of emotional scopes of foreign language learning. Therefore, the present theoretical review tries to refocus on the role of emotions of teachers and learners and their effects on language success and achievement. Successively, the effectiveness of verdicts for educators, students, syllabus designers, and future researchers are deliberated.

The development of biomass-derived carbon-based photocatalysts for the visible-light-driven photodegradation of pollutants: a comprehensive review

Biomass-derived carbonaceous materials have recently attracted extensive interest on account of their exceptional physicochemical properties which make them promising candidates for various critical applications. Several achieved advances have been reported in the recent literature, mainly focusing on the areas of energy storage and conversion. There is no review dedicated specifically to the potential applications of biomass-derived carbon-based photocatalytic materials for environmental remediation using the visible spectral region. The excellent characteristics of carbon materials, such as good electronic conductivity, unique nanocrystal structures, inherent hydrophobicity, and the tunable surface characteristics, are fully compatible with diverse catalytic reactions including organic transformations and photocatalysis processes. Importantly, biomass-carbon-based materials are considered to be green and viable alternative photocatalysts due to their environmentally friendly and naturally abundant nature. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent advances relating to the synthesis of biomass-derived carbon-based photocatalysts, focusing on their potential for the photodegradation of various pollutants. First, potential natural biomass sources, various synthetic routes, and the properties of carbon materials are systematically discussed. Recent advances in the production of biomass-carbon-based photocatalysts (including material design, mechanisms, and photocatalytic performance) are highlighted. Regarding ideas for the development of new biomass-derived photocatalysts, we outline research gaps that are worthy of further research in the future.

This review highlights recent advances relating to the synthesis of biomass-derived carbon-based photocatalysts in light of their potential use in the photodegradation of various pollutants.

Core-shell cadmium sulphide @ silver sulphide nanowires surface architecture: Design towards photoelectrochemical solar cells

Design and development of cadmium sulphide core with silver sulphide shell assembly in nanowire (NWs) surface architecture has been explored through room temperature, simple chemical route towards photoelectrochemical solar cell application. Incorporation of low band gap Ag₂S nanoparticles over the outer surface of the chemical bath deposited CdS NWs has been achieved by simple cation exchange route based on negative free energy of formation. Shell optimization has been performed by investigating structure, surface morphologies and optical analyses and correlated with the photovoltaic parameters. Interestingly, core-shell CdS NWs/ Ag₂S exhibits 1.5 better performance in terms of linear voltammetry, photocurrent transient response and the photo stability than bare CdS. Furthermore, three-fold enhancement in photoelectrochemical conversion efficiency have been observed for optimized FTO/ CdS NWs/Ag₂S compared to bare FTO/CdS NWs due to the augmented light harvesting and condensed charge recombination. External quantum efficiency exhibits 24% for the optimized CdS NWs/ Ag₂S core shell structure. Mott-Schottky and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements have been used for better understanding the impact of gradual growth of Ag₂S over CdS NWs which directly influences the overall photocurrent density of the devices.

An innovative strategy for synchronous treatment of combined heavy metal and organic pollutants through polysaccharide gel encapsulating S2

In many industrial fields, treatment of composite contaminations involving inorganic heavy metal ions and organic pollutants simultaneously remains a tremendous challenge. In this paper, an innovative strategy based on the gelation process of Sodium Alginate (SA) was proposed for synchronous treatment of composite pollutants. Through a pre-gelation step, SA gel balls encapsulated with S^2- (SA/S^2- gel) were formed and immersed into polluted solutions containing Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ and Cd²⁺/dye. The removal efficiency of Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ by SA/S^2- gel were both increased compared with pure SA gel. The adsorbed Pb²⁺/Cd²⁺ was in-situ transformed into PbS/CdS quantum dots (QDs) possessing photo-catalytic activity, which induced the degradation of dyes under UV irradiation. In this respect, the proposed SA/S^2- system might provide a high-performance and energy-saving way for comprehensive treatment of inorganic heavy metal and organic industrial pollutants.

Synthesis of CdS-loaded (CuC10H26N6)3(PW12O40)2 for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline under simulated solar light irradiation

Largely discharged and excreted medical pollutants pose huge threats to ecosystems. However, typical photocatalysts, such as the Keggin-typed H₃PW₁₂O₄₀, can hardly degrade these hazards under visible-light due to their broad bandgap and catalytic disability. In this work, the visible light harvesting was enabled by combining macrocyclic coordination compound CuC₁₀H₂₆N₆Cl₂O₈ with H₃PW₁₂O₄₀, and the resulting CuPW was loaded with CdS to reach robust catalytic ability to totally detoxify medicines. We prepared the CuPW–CdS composites through a facile precipitation method, and it showed excellent photocatalytic degradation for degrading tetracycline under visible-light irradiation. The (CuC₁₀H₂₆N₆)₃(PW₁₂O₄₀)₂ with 10 wt% load of CdS shows the highest performance and is ∼6 times more efficient than the pure CuPW counterpart. The heterojunctional CuPW–CdS composites promote the separation of electrons and holes, and consequentially enhance photocatalytic activity. Thanks to migration of electrons from CdS to CuPW, the photocorrosion of CdS is prohibited, resulting in a high chemical stability during photocatalysis. In this work we design a new route to the multi-structural composite photocatalysts for practical applications in medical pollutant decontamination.

We demonstrated the incorporation of (CuC₁₂H₃₀N₆)²⁺ into the a Keggin type H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ by a simple one-pot self-assembly process. A heterojunction structure was constructed by introducing CdS which has high photocatalytic activities.

Rod-Shaped Carbon Aerogel-Assisted CdS Nanocomposite for the Removal of Methylene Blue Dye and Colorless Phenol

A carbon aerogel (CA)-assisted CdS nanocomposite was prepared by hydrothermal process and was investigated as a photocatalyst towards the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) dye and colorless phenol under visible light irradiation (VLI). CdS have attracted wide attention due to their relatively narrow band gap for the visible light effect and the suitably negative potential of the conduction band (CB) edge for the neutralization of H+ ions. The obtained characterization results suggest that the CA-assisted CdS nanocomposite has enhanced photophysical properties, a more surface area, and the desired morphology at the nm scale. Under optimization, CdS CA 8% shows superior catalytic activity for degradation compared with other samples. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized samples were examined under VLI through the MB and phenol degradation. Compared with pure CA and CdS, the CA (8%)-assisted CdS nanoparticles (NPs) offer significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency for MB and phenol. The mechanism of photocatalytic reaction was examined by adding various scavengers, and the results revealed that the holes generated in CA (8%)-assisted CdS NPs have a crucial impact on the visible light photocatalytic process. The improved photocatalytic degradation was due to the strong interaction between the CA and CdS NPs.

Preparation of High-Performance CdS@C Catalyst Using Cd-Enriched Biochar Recycled From Plating Wastewater

Biochar is widely used for the adsorptive removal of Cd from water and soil, but the Cd-enriched biochar produced carries a risk of secondary pollution. In this work, biochar derived from rice straw was used to adsorb Cd from plating wastewater. The Cd-enriched biochar showed a saturated adsorption capacity of about 63.5 mg/g and could be recycled and used in a mesoporous carbon-supported CdS (CdS@C) photocatalyst after pyrolysis carbonization and a hydrothermal reaction. The results demonstrated that the as-prepared CdS@C photocatalyst contained mixed cubic and hexagonal CdS phases, with a considerably lower band gap (2.1 eV) than pure CdS (2.6 eV). CdS@C exhibited an enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of organic dyes under visible light irradiation compared with pure CdS due to its excellent light-harvesting capacity and efficient electron-hole separation. Moreover, the continuous formation of active species (h⁺, •OH, and O₂•⁻) was responsible for the photodegradation of organic dyes using CdS@C. This work provides new insights for the safe disposal of Cd-enriched wastewater and for improving the economic viability of Cd-contaminated resources by recovering a value-added photocatalyst.

Covalent triazine framework with efficient photocatalytic activity in aqueous and solid media

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have been recently employed for visible light-driven photocatalysis due to their unique optical and electronic properties. However, the usually highly hydrophobic nature of CTFs, which originates from their overall aromatic backbone, leads to limitations of CTFs for applications in aqueous media. In this study, we aim to extend the range of the application media of CTFs and design hybrid material of a CTF and mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for efficient photocatalysis in aqueous medium. A thiophene-containing CTF was directly synthesized in mesopores of SBA-15. Due to the high surface area and the added hydrophilic properties by silica, the hybrid material demonstrated excellent adsorption of organic molecules in water. This leads not only to high photocatalytic performance of the hybrid material for the degradation of organic dyes in water, but also for efficient photocatalysis in solvent-free and solid state. Furthermore, the reusability, stability and easy recovery of the hybrid material offers promising metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst for broader applications in different reaction media.

Synergistic Catalysis of Co(OH)2/CuO for the Degradation of Organic Pollutant Under Visible Light Irradiation

The exploration of advanced water treatment technologies e.g. heterogeneous photocatalysis is the most promising way to address organic pollution issues. Semiconductors based bimetallic photocatalysis with wide bandgap, have displayed splendid degradation performance in the UV light region, but their extension to the visible light/near infra-red region is still a matter of great concern. CuO, Co(OH)₂, CoO and Co(OH)₂/CuO nanocomposites were synthesized via simple co-precipitation method and further practiced for Rhodamine B (RhB) decomposition by introducing per-sulfate (PS) as a sacrificial agent. Results revealed that Co(OH)₂/CuO catalyst had shown robust catalytic activity for RhB photodegradation (degradation time 8 min, k = 0.864 min⁻¹) under light illumination, significantly less (12–60 times) than the other reported bimetallic catalysts. Catalyst also have verified excellent performance for a broader pH range (5–9) with excellent stability. Main reactive species responsible for the photocatalytic reaction were sulfate (SO₄^•−) and superoxide (O₂^•) radicals, duly verified by ESR and by using radical scavengers. With outstanding recycling abilities, this is probably the fewer successful attempt for RhB decolorization and can be highly favorable for effluent treatment by using the synergic effect of absorption and photodegradation.

Construction of a novel ternary composite of Co-doped CdSe loaded on biomass carbon spheres as visible light photocatalysts for efficient photocatalytic applications

The cobalt doped cadmium selenide/biomass carbon spheres (Co-CdSe/BCS) photocatalyst is easily prepared using a transitory hydrothermal reaction lasting 40 min. The Co-CdSe/BCS photocatalyst is constructed using the in situ growth of Co-CdSe nanodots on the surfaces of the BCS. Doped Co2+ generates an electron trap, which can capture the photoinduced electrons, resulting in the efficient separation of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the introduction of carbon spheres enhances the optical absorption property and the ability for electron transport. Results of electrochemical characterization and photoluminescence spectra demonstrate that the Co-CdSe/BCS is able to efficiently separate electron-hole pairs and inhibit their recombination. The as-synthesized samples display high efficiency for the photodegradation of methylene blue dye under visible light. This study offers a new strategy to promote photocatalytic performance of the CdSe photocatalyst.
