Challenges and Prospects of Photocatalytic Applications Utilizing Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Pyridinethiolate-Capped CdSe Quantum Dots for Red-Light-Driven H2 Production in Water

The utilization of low-energy sunlight to produce renewable fuels is a subject of great interest. Here we report the first example of metal chalcogenide quantum dots (QDs) capped with a pyridinethiolate carboxylic acid (pyS-COOH) for red-light-driven H2 production in water. The precious-metal-free system is robust over 240 h, and achieves a turnover number (TON) of 43910±305 (vs Ni) with a rate of 31570±1690 μmol g-1 h-1 for hydrogen production. In contrast to the inactive QDs capped with other thiolate ligands, the CdSe-pyS-COOH QDs give a significantly higher singlet oxygen quantum yield [ΦΔ (1O2)] in solution.

Charge Transfer from Quantum-Confined 0D, 1D, and 2D Nanocrystals

The properties of colloidal quantum-confined semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), including zero-dimensional (0D) quantum dots, 1D nanorods, 2D nanoplatelets, and their heterostructures, can be tuned through their size, dimensionality, and material composition. In their photovoltaic and photocatalytic applications, a key step is to generate spatially separated and long-lived electrons and holes by interfacial charge transfer. These charge transfer properties have been extensively studied recently, which is the subject of this Review. The Review starts with a summary of the electronic structure and optical properties of 0D-2D nanocrystals, followed by the advances in wave function engineering, a novel way to control the spatial distribution of electrons and holes, through their size, dimension, and composition. It discusses the dependence of NC charge transfer on various parameters and the development of the Auger-assisted charge transfer model. Recent advances in understanding multiple exciton generation, decay, and dissociation are also discussed, with an emphasis on multiple carrier transfer. Finally, the applications of nanocrystal-based systems for photocatalysis are reviewed, focusing on the photodriven charge separation and recombination processes that dictate the function and performance of these materials. The Review ends with a summary and outlook of key remaining challenges and promising future directions in the field.

Electron Donor-Specific Surface Interactions Promote the Photocatalytic Activity of Metal-Semiconductor Nanohybrids

In the past two decades, the application of colloidal semiconductor-metal nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts for the hydrogen generation from water has been extensively studied. The present body of literature studies agrees that the photocatalytic yield strongly depends on the electron donating agent (EDA) added for scavenging the photogenerated holes. The highest reported hydrogen production rates are obtained in the presence of ionic EDAs and at high pH. The large hydrogen production rates are attributed to fast hole transfer from the NP onto the EDAs. However, the present discussions do not treat the influence of EDA-specific surface interactions. This systematic study focuses on that aspect by combining steady-state hydrogen production measurements with time-resolved and static optical spectroscopy, employing 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid-capped, Pt-tipped CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods in the presence of a large set of EDAs. Based on the experimental results, two distinct EDA groups are identified: surface-active and diffusion-limited EDAs. The largest photocatalytic efficiencies are obtained in the presence of surface-active EDAs that induce an agglomeration of the NPs. This demonstrates that the introduction of surface-active EDAs can significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of the NPs, despite reducing their colloidal stability and inducing the formation of NP networks.

Recent advances in ternary Z-scheme photocatalysis on graphitic carbon nitride based photocatalysts

Due to its excellent photocatalytic performance over the last few years, graphitic-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has garnered considerable notice as a photocatalyst. Nevertheless, several limitations, including small surface area, the rates at which photo-generated electrons and holes recombine are swift, and the inefficient separation and transport of photoexcited carriers continue to impede its solar energy utilization. To overcome those limitations in single-component g-C3N4, constructing a heterogeneous photocatalytic system has emerged as an effective way. Among the various studies involving the incorporation of hetero composite materials to design heterojunctions, among the most promising approaches is to assemble a Z-scheme photocatalytic configuration. The Z-scheme configuration is essential because it facilitates efficient photocarrier separation and exhibits superior redox ability in separated electrons and holes. Moreover, ternary composites have demonstrated enhanced photocatalytic activities and reinforced photostability. Ternary Z-scheme heterostructures constructed with g-C3N4 possess all the above-mentioned merits and provide a pioneering strategy for implementing photocatalytic systems for environmental and energy sustainability. A summary of the latest technological advancements toward design and fabrication in ternary all-solid-state Z-scheme (ASSZ) and direct Z-scheme (DZ) photocatalysts built on g-C3N4 is presented in this review. Furthermore, the review also discusses the application of ternary Z-scheme photocatalytic architecture established on g-C3N4.

Partial Chemicalization of Nanoscale Metals: An Intra-Material Transformative Approach for the Synthesis of Functional Colloidal Metal-Semiconductor Nanoheterostructures

Heterostructuring colloidal nanocrystals into multicomponent modular constructs, where domains of distinct metal and semiconductor phases are interconnected through bonding interfaces, is a consolidated approach to advanced breeds of solution-processable hybrid nanomaterials capable of expressing richly tunable and even entirely novel physical-chemical properties and functionalities. To meet the challenges posed by the wet-chemical synthesis of metal-semiconductor nanoheterostructures and to overcome some intrinsic limitations of available protocols, innovative transformative routes, based on the paradigm of partial chemicalization, have recently been devised within the framework of the standard seeded-growth scheme. These techniques involve regiospecific replacement reactions on preformed nanocrystal substrates, thus holding great synthetic potential for programmable configurational diversification. This review article illustrates achievements so far made in the elaboration of metal-semiconductor nanoheterostructures with tailored arrangements of their component modules by means of conversion pathways that leverage on spatially controlled partial chemicalization of mono- and bi-metallic seeds. The advantages and limitations of these approaches are discussed within the context of the most plausible mechanisms underlying the evolution of the nanoheterostructures in liquid media. Representative physical-chemical properties and applications of chemicalization-derived metal-semiconductor nanoheterostructures are emphasized. Finally, prospects for developments in the field are outlined.

Unravelling Dynamics Involving Multiple Charge Carriers in Semiconductor Nanocrystals

The use of colloidal nanocrystals as part of artificial photosynthetic systems has recently gained significant attention, owing to their strong light absorption and highly reproducible, tunable electronic and optical properties. The complete photocatalytic conversion of water to its components is yet to be achieved in a practically suitable and commercially viable manner. To complete this challenging task, we are required to fully understand the mechanistic aspects of the underlying light-driven processes involving not just single charge carriers but also multiple charge carriers in detail. This review focuses on recent progress in understanding charge carrier dynamics in semiconductor nanocrystals and the influence of various parameters such as dimension, composition, and cocatalysts. Transient absorption spectroscopic studies involving single and multiple charge carriers, and the challenges associated with the need for accumulation of multiple charge carriers to drive the targeted chemical reactions, are discussed.

Lateral charge migration in 1D semiconductor-metal hybrid photocatalytic systems

Colloidal nanorods based on CdS or CdSe, functionalized with metal particles, have proven to be efficient catalysts for light-driven hydrogen evolution. Seeded CdSe@CdS nanorods have shown increasing performance with increasing rod length. This observation was rationalized by the increasing lifetime of the separated charges, as a large distance between holes localized in the CdSe seed and electrons localized at the metal tip decreases their recombination rate. However, the impact of nanorod length on the electron-to-tip localization efficiency or pathway remained an open question. Therefore, we investigated the photo-induced electron transfer to the metal in a series of Ni-tipped CdSe@CdS nanorods with varying length. We find that the transfer processes occurring from the region close to the semiconductor-metal interface, the rod region, and the CdSe seed region depend in different ways on the rods' length. The rate of the fastest process from excitonic states generated directly at the interface is independent of the rod length, but the relative amplitude decreases with increasing rod length, as the weight of the interface region is decreasing. The transfer of electrons to the metal tip from excitons generated in the CdS rod region depends strongly on the length of the nanorods, which indicates an electron transport-limited process, i.e., electron diffusion toward the interface region, followed by fast interface crossing. The transfer originating from the CdSe excitonic states again shows no significant length dependence in its time constant, as it is probably limited by the rate of overcoming the shallow confinement in the CdSe seed.

Covalent Functionalization of CdSe Quantum Dot Films with Molecular [FeFe] Hydrogenase Mimics for Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

CdSe quantum dots (QDs) combined with [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics as molecular catalytic reaction centers based on earth-abundant elements have demonstrated promising activity for photocatalytic hydrogen generation. Direct linking of the [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics to the QD surface is expected to establish a close contact between the [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics and the light-harvesting QDs, supporting the transfer and accumulation of several electrons needed to drive hydrogen evolution. In this work, we report on the functionalization of QDs immobilized in a thin-film architecture on a substrate with [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics by covalent linking via carboxylate groups as the anchoring functionality. The functionalization was monitored via UV/vis, photoluminescence, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and quantified via micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The activity of the functionalized thin film was demonstrated, and turn-over numbers in the range of 360-580 (short linkers) and 130-160 (long linkers) were achieved. This work presents a proof-of-concept study, showing the potential of thin-film architectures of immobilized QDs as a platform for light-driven hydrogen evolution without the need for intricate surface modifications to ensure colloidal stability in aqueous environments.

How Pendant Groups Dictate Energy and Electron Transfer in Perovskite-Rhodamine Light Harvesting Assemblies

Energy and electron transfer processes allow for efficient manipulation of excited states within light harvesting assemblies for photocatalytic and optoelectronic applications. We have now successfully probed the influence of acceptor pendant group functionalization on the energy and electron transfer between CsPbBr₃ perovskite nanocrystals and three rhodamine-based acceptor molecules. The three acceptors─rhodamine B (RhB), rhodamine isothiocyanate (RhB-NCS), and rose Bengal (RoseB)─contain an increasing degree of pendant group functionalization that affects their native excited state properties. When interacting with CsPbBr₃ as an energy donor, photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy reveals that singlet energy transfer occurs with all three acceptors. However, the acceptor functionalization directly influences several key parameters that dictate the excited state interactions. For example, RoseB binds to the nanocrystal surface with an apparent association constant (K_app = 9.4 × 10⁶ M^-1) 200 times greater than RhB (K_app = 0.05 × 10⁶ M^-1), thus influencing the rate of energy transfer. Femtosecond transient absorption reveals the observed rate constant of singlet energy transfer (k_EnT) is an order-of-magnitude greater for RoseB (k_EnT = 1 × 10¹¹ s^-1) than for RhB and RhB-NCS. In addition to energy transfer, each acceptor had a subpopulation of molecules (∼30%) that underwent electron transfer as a competing pathway. Thus, the structural influence of acceptor moieties must be considered for both excited state energy and electron transfer in nanocrystal-molecular hybrids. The competition between electron and energy transfer further highlights the complexity of excited state interactions in nanocrystal-molecular complexes and the need for careful spectroscopic analysis to elucidate competitive pathways.

Energy Versus Electron Transfer: Managing Excited-State Interactions in Perovskite Nanocrystal-Molecular Hybrids

Energy and electron transfer processes in light harvesting assemblies dictate the outcome of the overall light energy conversion process. Halide perovskite nanocrystals such as CsPbBr₃ with relatively high emission yield and strong light absorption can transfer singlet and triplet energy to surface-bound acceptor molecules. They can also induce photocatalytic reduction and oxidation by selectively transferring electrons and holes across the nanocrystal interface. This perspective discusses key factors dictating these excited-state pathways in perovskite nanocrystals and the fundamental differences between energy and electron transfer processes. Spectroscopic methods to decipher between these complex photoinduced pathways are presented. A basic understanding of the fundamental differences between the two excited deactivation processes (charge and energy transfer) and ways to modulate them should enable design of more efficient light harvesting assemblies with semiconductor and molecular systems.

Ultrafast spectroscopy studies of carrier dynamics in semiconductor nanocrystals

Semiconductor nanocrystals have become ubiquitous both in scientific research and in applied technologies related to light. When a nanocrystal absorbs a photon an electron-hole pair is created whose fate dictates whether the nanocrystal will be suitable for a particular application. Ultrafast spectroscopy provides a real-time window to monitor the evolution of the electron-hole pair. In this review, we focus on CdSe nanocrystals, the most-studied nanocrystal system to date, and also highlight ultrasmall nanocrystals, “standard nanocrystals” of different binary composition, alloyed nanocrystals, and core/shell nanocrystals and nanorods. We focus on four time-resolved spectroscopies used to interrogate nanocrystals: pump-probe, fluorescence upconversion, time-correlated single photon counting, and non-linear spectroscopies. The basics of the nanocrystals and the spectroscopies are presented, followed by a detailed synopsis of ultrafast spectroscopy studies performed on the various semiconductor nanocrystal systems.

Direct Z-scheme of n-type CuS/p-type ZnS@electrospun PVP nanofiber for the highly efficient catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and mixed dyes

Environmental pollution has been the most critical issue on earth due to many factors, particularly the industrial chemical waste, which can be detoxified by photocatalytic methods. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of an electrospun composite nanofiber embedded with n-type CuS and p-type ZnS in partially carbonized-PVP nanofibers, so-called Z-type-CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers, to reduce 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol and degrade the mixed dyes of methylene blue, rhodamine B, and methyl orange. The Z-type-CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers were prepared by an electrospinning method, followed by annealing at 180 °C and 400 °C under N₂ atmosphere. As-prepared CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibrous mats were characterized by SEM, XRD, PL, DRS, TPC, and EIS analyses. The results revealed that Z-type CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers have enhanced optical and electrochemical properties as compared with the CuS@PVP and ZnS@PVP nanofibers. Likewise, the Z-scheme was more beneficial for promoting the electron transfer as well as for delaying the photocarrier recombination. For the applications of CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers, the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol occurred within 2 h and the mixed-dye degradation occurred in 90 min in 5% MeOH aqueous solution under solar light irradiation. The CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers also possessed excellent stability, with more than 95% remaining after five recycle runs. The photocatalytic mechanism reaction is proposed, in which the mechanism was initiated by the adsorption of organic pollutants on the nanofiber matrix, followed by the photoreaction due to e⁻ and h⁺ in CuS/ZnS after light irradiation as well as from the generated radical species. Lastly, the inorganic photocatalyst embedded in the nanofiber matrix offered an easy recovery process with excellent degradation performance as well.

Z-type CuS/ZnS@PVP nanofibers are synthesized for the photocatalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol and for mixed-dyes degradation under mild conditions.

Synthesis and Formation Mechanism of Colloidal Janus-Type Cu2-xS/CuInS2 Heteronanorods via Seeded Injection

Colloidal heteronanocrystals allow for the synergistic combination of properties of different materials. For example, spatial separation of the photogenerated electron and hole can be achieved by coupling different semiconductors with suitable band offsets in one single nanocrystal, which is beneficial for improving the efficiency of photocatalysts and photovoltaic devices. From this perspective, axially segmented semiconductor heteronanorods with a type-II band alignment are particularly attractive since they ensure the accessibility of both photogenerated charge carriers. Here, a two-step synthesis route to Cu_2-xS/CuInS₂ Janus-type heteronanorods is presented. The heteronanorods are formed by injection of a solution of preformed Cu_2-xS seed nanocrystals in 1-dodecanethiol into a solution of indium oleate in oleic acid at 240 °C. By varying the reaction time, Janus-type heteronanocrystals with different sizes, shapes, and compositions are obtained. A mechanism for the formation of the heteronanocrystals is proposed. The first step of this mechanism consists of a thiolate-mediated topotactic, partial Cu⁺ for In³⁺ cation exchange that converts one of the facets of the seed nanocrystals into CuInS₂. This is followed by homoepitaxial anisotropic growth of wurtzite CuInS₂. The Cu_2-xS seed nanocrystals also act as sacrificial Cu⁺ sources, and therefore, single composition CuInS₂ nanorods are eventually obtained if the reaction is allowed to proceed to completion. The two-stage seeded growth method developed in this work contributes to the rational synthesis of Cu_2-xS/CuInS₂ heteronanocrystals with targeted architectures by allowing one to exploit the size and faceting of premade Cu_2-xS seed nanocrystals to direct the growth of the CuInS₂ segment.

Aggregation-induced photocatalytic activity and efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of amphiphilic rhodamines in water

The development of photocatalysts is an essential task for clean energy generation and establishing a sustainable society. This paper describes the aggregation-induced photocatalytic activity (AI-PCA) of amphiphilic rhodamines and photocatalytic functions of the supramolecular assemblies. The supramolecular assemblies consisting of amphiphilic rhodamines with octadecyl alkyl chains exhibited significant photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in water, while the corresponding monomeric rhodamines did not exhibit photocatalytic activity. The studies on the photocatalytic mechanism by spectroscopic and microscopic analyses clearly demonstrated the AI-PCA of the rhodamines. Moreover, the supramolecular assemblies of the rhodamines exhibited excellent photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rates (up to 5.9 mmol g-1 h-1).

Multinary copper-based chalcogenide nanocrystal systems from the perspective of device applications

Multinary chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals are a unique class of materials as they offer flexibility in composition, structure, and morphology for controlled band gap and optical properties. They offer a vast selection of materials for energy conversion, storage, and harvesting applications. Among the multinary chalcogenides, Cu-based compounds are the most attractive in terms of sustainability as many of them consist of earth-abundant elements. There has been immense progress in the field of Cu-based chalcogenides for device applications in the recent years. This paper reviews the state of the art synthetic strategies and application of multinary Cu-chalcogenide nanocrystals in photovoltaics, photocatalysis, light emitting diodes, supercapacitors, and luminescent solar concentrators. This includes the synthesis of ternary, quaternary, and quinary Cu-chalcogenide nanocrystals. The review also highlights some emerging experimental and computational characterization approaches for multinary Cu-chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals. It discusses the use of different multinary Cu-chalcogenide compounds, achievements in device performance, and the recent progress made with multinary Cu-chalcogenide nanocrystals in various energy conversion and energy storage devices. The review concludes with an outlook on some emerging and future device applications for multinary Cu-chalcogenides, such as scalable luminescent solar concentrators and wearable biomedical electronics.

Semiconductor Quantum Dots as Components of Photoactive Supramolecular Architectures

Luminescent quantum dots (QDs) are colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals consisting of an inorganic core covered by a molecular layer of organic surfactants. Although QDs have been known for more than thirty years, they are still attracting the interest of researchers because of their unique size-tunable optical and electrical properties arising from quantum confinement. Moreover, the controlled decoration of the QD surface with suitable molecular species enables the rational design of inorganic-organic multicomponent architectures that can show a vast array of functionalities. This minireview highlights the recent progress in the use of surface-modified QDs - in particular, those based on cadmium chalcogenides - as supramolecular platforms for light-related applications such as optical sensing, triplet photosensitization, photocatalysis and phototherapy.

Growth Process and CQDs-modified Bi₄Ti₃O12 Square Plates with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Bi₄Ti₃O12 square plates were synthesized via a hydrothermal route, and their growth process was systematically investigated. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) were prepared using glucose as the carbon source, which were then assembled on the surface of Bi₄Ti₃O12 square plates via a hydrothermal route with the aim of enhancing the photocatalytic performance. XRD (X-ray powder diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscopy), UV-vis DRS (diffuse reflectance spectroscopy), XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), PL (photoluminescence) spectroscopy, EIS (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and photocurrent spectroscopy were used to systematically characterize the as-prepared samples. It is demonstrated that the decoration of CQDs on Bi₄Ti₃O12 plates leads to an increased visible light absorption, slightly increased bandgap, increased photocurrent density, decreased charge-transfer resistance, and decreased PL intensity. Simulated sunlight and visible light were separately used as a light source to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of the samples toward the degradation of RhB in aqueous solution. Under both simulated sunlight and visible light irradiation, CQDs@Bi₄Ti₃O12 composites with an appropriate amount of CQDs exhibit obviously enhanced photocatalytic performance. However, the decoration of excessive CQDs gives rise to a decrease in the photocatalytic activity. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of CQDs-modified Bi₄Ti₃O12 can be attributed to the following reasons: (1) The electron transfer between Bi₄Ti₃O12 and CQDs promotes an efficient separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs in Bi₄Ti₃O12; (2) the up-conversion photoluminescence emitted from CQDs could induce the generation of additional electron/hole pairs in Bi₄Ti₃O12; and (3) the photoexcited electrons in CQDs could participate in the photocatalytic reactions.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals in energy transfer reactions

Excitonic energy transfer is a versatile mechanism by which colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals can interact with a variety of nanoscale species. This feature article will discuss the latest research on the key scenarios under which semiconductor nanocrystals can engage in energy transfer with other nanoparticles, organic fluorophores, and plasmonic nanostructures, highlighting potential technological benefits to be gained from such processes.

Synthesis of Flower-Like AgI/BiOCOOH p-n Heterojunctions With Enhanced Visible-Light Photocatalytic Performance for the Removal of Toxic Pollutants

In this study, flower-like AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunctions were constructed through a two-step procedure involving the solvothermal synthesis of BiOCOOH microflowers followed by AgI modification using a precipitation method. These novel photocatalysts were systematically examined by XRD, UV–vis DRS, SEM, TEM, EDS, and PL spectroscopy techniques. The AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunction were studied as a decent photocatalyst for the removal of the industrial dye (rhodamine B, and methyl blue) and antibiotic (tetracycline) under visible light. The AgI/BiOCOOH heterojunctions are much more active than bare BiOCOOH, and AgI, which could be ascribed to the improved separation of charge carriers, resulting from the formation of p-n heterojunction between two constituents. The holes (h⁺) and superoxide radical (•O2-) were detected as the main active species responsible for the pollutant degradation. The results showed that a highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalytic system was developed for the decomposition of toxic pollutants.
