Adsorption Characteristics of Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate on the Surface of Montmorillonite Minerals

Comparative Analysis of Hydrogel Adsorption/Desorption with and without Surfactants

In this particular study, a hydrogel known as SAP-1 was synthesized through the grafting of acrylic acid-co-acrylamide onto pullulan, resulting in the creation of Pul-g-Poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide). Additionally, a sponge hydrogel named SAP-2 was prepared by incorporating the surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) into the hydrogel through free radical solution polymerization. To gain further insight into the composition and properties of the hydrogels, various techniques, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), atomic absorption spectroscopy, and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), were employed. Conversely, the absorption kinetics and the equilibrium capacities of the prepared hydrogels were investigated and analyzed. The outcomes of the investigation indicated that each of the synthesized hydrogels exhibited considerable efficacy as adsorbents for cadmium (II), copper (II), and nickel (II) ions. In particular, SAP-2 gel displayed a remarkable cadmium (II) ion absorption ability, with a rate of 190.72 mg/g. Following closely, SAP-1 gel demonstrated the ability to absorb cadmium (II) ions at a rate of 146.9 mg/g and copper (II) ions at a rate of 154 mg/g. Notably, SAP-2 hydrogel demonstrated the ability to repeat the adsorption-desorption cycles three times for cadmium (II) ions, resulting in absorption capacities of 190.72 mg/g, 100.43 mg/g, and 19.64 mg/g for the first, second, and third cycles, respectively. Thus, based on the abovementioned results, it can be concluded that all the synthesized hydrogels possess promising potential as suitable candidates for the adsorption and desorption of cadmium (II), copper (II), and nickel (II) ions.

Efficient cadmium immobilization by organic loaded Na-montmorillonite in a contaminated soil

Clay minerals are effective sorbents for toxic metal immobilization in contaminated soils and waters. However, their Cd immobilization efficiency is unclear when they are loaded with organics. In this study, sodium montmorillonite (Na-M) was successfully loaded with potassium humate, chitosan, and glycine to adsorb Cd(II) in solution. Potassium humate loaded Na-M (Na-M-HA), which had the highest specific surface area and cation exchange capacity (CEC), showed the highest Cd(II) adsorption capacity (73.7 mg g^-1), 22.5 % and 81.8 % higher than that of chitosan loaded Na-M (Na-M-CTS) and glycine loaded Na-M (Na-M-G), respectively. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model best described (R² > 0.98) the adsorption kinetics of Cd(II) on the three Na-Ms, indicating that the adsorption processes were of chemisorption nature. The adsorption isotherm of Cd(II) on Na-M-HA was of the Freundlich type, suggesting multilayer adsorption. In contrast, the isothermal adsorption of Cd(II) on Na-M-CTS (R² = 0.99) and Na-M-G (R² = 0.89) was better described by the Langmuir model, suggesting the dominance of monolayer adsorption in the adsorption process. High temperature, high pH, low background ionic strength, and low valence competing cations favored Cd(II) adsorption on Na-M-HA. The underlying mechanisms of Cd(II) sorption on Na-M-HA were electrostatic attraction, ion exchange and complexation. Na-M-HA was applied to a Cd polluted soil planted with lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). in a pot experiment. Compared to the control with no adsorbent application, Na-M-HA application at 2 % effectively reduced the available Cd content in soil and Cd accumulation in plant by 36.0 % and 56.8 %, respectively. This work demonstrated that Na-M-HA is a green, low-cost and excellent adsorbent for Cd stabilization, and that its application in Cd-polluted soils can efficiently reduce Cd bioavailability and thereby Cd transfer along the food chain and eventually reduce the threat of Cd pollution to human health.

Adsorption of the Xanthan Gum Polymer and Sodium Dodecylbenzenesulfonate Surfactant in Sandstone Reservoirs: Experimental and Density Function Theory Studies

Chemical flooding using a polymer and/or surfactant has been widely applied in oilfields worldwide for enhanced oil recovery. Chemical adsorption in reservoirs has a significant effect on the rock permeability and wettability and hence can affect the overall oil production. In this work, two chemicals, namely, the xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) anionic surfactant, were used individually as displacement fluids. The amount of chemical adsorption on the rock surface and the residual resistance factor (permeability reduction) were calculated throughout the flooding experiments using an unconsolidated sandstone (SS) pack model. The effects of the injected chemicals' concentration and reservoir salinity on adsorption capacity have been examined. Additionally, the effect of the addition of nanosilica particles (NSPs) to the injected fluid on the rock adsorption was also investigated. The results showed that the amount of XG and SDBS adsorption on the rock surface increased, albeit to a different extent, by increasing the chemical concentration at the applied salinities (0, 3.5, 5, and 10%) of the displacement fluids. Also, the permeability reduction increased with the increase in XG and SDBS concentrations; however, permeability reduction due to SDBS flooding was lower than that of XG in SS. The use of NSPs as a coinjectant to the XG and SDBS displacement fluids increased the adsorption on the SS rock. A plausible mechanism for the adsorption of the XG/NSP and SDBS/NSP blends on the SS surface was proposed. A density function theory calculation was employed to establish a relation between the adsorptivity of NSPs on SDBS and XG and the total energy and dipole moment of the molecules.

Comparison of the influence of cationic polysaccharides on the stability properties of montmorillonite suspensions in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulphate

The mixtures of cationic cellulose (CC) or cationic guar gum (CGG) with the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant (SDS) were used as stabilizers for the aqueous suspensions of montmorillonite (Mt). The stabilization processes and the stabilization mechanism were investigated using the UV-VIS. The obtained results show that both polysaccharides can be used as stabilizers of the water suspensions of montmorillonite due to the effective adsorption of CC and CGG with or without SDS on the Mt. surface. To obtain complete information on the studied systems, the additional measurements of the surface tension, zeta potential, FT-IR, XRD and SEM were made. The results prove that the intermolecular complexes formed between the polysaccharides and SDS can adsorb on the Mt. surface, change the structure of the electrical double layer and the stability properties of the studied suspensions.

The adsorptive behaviour of kaolinite to sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate and the structural variation of kaolinite

Analysis of the adsorptive behaviour of kaolinite to sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate (SDBS) at different concentrations can provides a basis for selecting the best concentration. The adsorptive capacity and adsorptive behaviour of kaolinite to SDBS at different concentrations were studied using ultraviolet spectrophotometer, pseudo-first-order adsorption kinetics model, and pseudo-second-order adsorption kinetics model. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM–EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to study the variation characteristics of surface structure, crystallinity indices, and main functional groups on kaolinite before, and after, adsorption. The results show that as the SDBS concentration increase, the adsorptive capacity of kaolinite to SDBS increase. The adsorption process can be accurately fitted by the pseudo-secondary adsorption kinetic model, which means the adsorptive behaviour was mainly chemical in origin. The adsorption of SDBS by kaolinite mainly occurs on the surface. The solidification, lamellar aggregation, and crystallinity index of kaolinite are more obvious after the adsorption of SDBS, but the interlayer spacing of kaolinite did not change to any significant. After the adsorption of SDBS, the intensity ratio of 1000–1008 cm⁻¹ bands changed significantly, indicating the change of the chemical environment, and the adsorptive behaviour was chemical.

Green remediation of Cd and Hg contaminated soil using humic acid modified montmorillonite: Immobilization performance under accelerated ageing conditions

Solidification/Stabilization (S/S) is an effective way to immobilize toxic metals in contaminated soil. However, utilization of ordinary Portland cement (PC) in this process has raised environmental concerns owing to the high carbon footprint from PC manufacturing and the risk of toxic element leaching in the long term. Hence there is an urgent need to seek for "green" immobilization approaches with long-term stability. In this study, a clay-based material, humic acid modified montmorillonite (HA-Mont) was applied to a Cd and Hg contaminated soil. Field emission scanning electron microscopy combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM/EDS), N₂ adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed to investigate the characteristics of this material. Compared to the soil without any treatment, dosage of 5 % HA-Mont could effectively reduce Cd and Hg concentrations by 94.1 % and 93.0 %, respectively and to below the regulatory limits in the TCLP (Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure) leachates. Compared to the soil treated with virgin montmorillonite, HA modification resulted in the reduction of leachate concentrations of Cd and Hg by 69.5 % and 65.9 %, respectively. Long-term immobilization performance of the HA-Mont treatment was examined using a quantitative accelerated ageing method. In order to examine the ageing features, a novel method based on conditional probability was developed, and the reliability of HA-Mont immobilization was found to fit the Weibull model well, as the ageing rate of immobilization effect increased with time. After 120 years of ageing, reliability of both metals could still remain above 0.95. Cd concentration in TCLP leachates at 120^th year could still remain below the regulatory limit (294 μg/L vs 1000 μg/L), while Hg concentration reached the regulatory limit of 200 μg/L in 96^th year. This is the first attempt developing a green S/S method of Cd and Hg contaminated soil using HA-Mont and examining the long-term ageing characteristics of the stabilized soil using a probability-based approach.

Vinyl Phosphate-Functionalized, Magnetic, Molecularly-Imprinted Polymeric Microspheres' Enrichment and Carbon Dots' Fluorescence-Detection of Organophosphorus Pesticide Residues

The rapid detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues in food is crucial to food safety. One type of novel, magnetic, molecularly-imprinted polymeric microsphere (MMIP) was prepared with vinyl phosphate and 1-octadecene as a collection of dual functional monomers, which were screened by Gaussian09W molecular simulation. MMIPs were used to enrich organic phosphorus, which then detected by fluorescence quenching in vinyl phosphate-modified carbon dots (CDs@VPA) originated from anhydrous citric acid. MMIPs and CDs@VPA were characterized by TEM, particle size analysis, FT-IR, VSM, XPS, adsorption experiments, and fluorescence spectrophotometry in turn. Through the fitting data from experiment and Gaussian quantum chemical calculations, the molecular recognition properties and the mechanism of fluorescence detection between organophosphorus pesticides and CDs@VPA were also investigated. The results indicated that the MMIPs could specifically recognize and enrich triazophos with the saturated adsorption capacity 0.226 mmol g^-1, the imprinting factor 4.59, and the limit of recognition as low as 0.0006 mmol L^-1. Under optimal conditions, the CDs@VPA sensor has shown an extensive fluorescence property with a LOD of 0.0015 mmol L^-1 and the linear range from 0.0035 mmol L^-1 to 0.20 mmol L^-1 (R² = 0.9988) at 390 nm. The mechanism of fluorescence detection of organic phosphorus with CDs@VPA sensor might be attributable to hydrogen bonds formed between heteroatom O, N, S, or P, and the O-H group, which led to fluorescent quenching. Meanwhile, HN-C=O and Si-O groups in CDs@VPA system might contribute to cause excellent blue photoluminescence. The fluorescence sensor was thorough successfully employed to the detection of triazophos in cucumber samples, illustrating its tremendous value towards food sample analysis in complex matrix.
