Efficient Transfer Hydrogenation of Nitro Compounds to Amines Enabled by Mesoporous N-Stabilized Co-Zn/C

Microfluidic chemistry assisted synthesis of cobalt quantum dot embedded nitrogen doped carbon with oxidase-like properties toward ascorbic acid detection

Ascorbic acid (AA) is a powerful antioxidant in food safety and disease treatment. It is of great significance to develop a low-cost, high-stability, and easy-to-operate colorimetric method for quantitative detection of AA in food or human body. Although various nanozymes have been developed for the colorimetric detection of AA, the size regulation of the catalytic center of nanozymes remains a challenge. In this work, we propose a combined strategy of flow chemistry synthesis and pyrolysis to realize the controllable adjustment of the catalytic center size of nanozymes. Zinc-cobalt zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZnCo-ZIFs) with different sizes are synthesized by flow chemistry. Nitrogen-doped carbon materials with different Co catalytic centers (80 nm-10 nm) are then obtained by pyrolysis of ZnCo-ZIFs precursors. Among them, cobalt quantum dot embedded nitrogen-doped carbon (Co QDs/N-C) exhibits excellent oxidase activity, with Vmax and Km of 4.19 × 10-7 M s-1 and 0.12 mM. Therefore, a simple, low-cost, and stable colorimetric method for the detection of AA is established with a good linear relationship (3-500 μM) and low detection limit (0.40 μM). This work has certain guiding significance for the size regulation of catalytic center of nanozyme, and the detection method has broad application prospects in biochemical sensing field.

Constructing Bimetallic ZIF-Derived Zn,Co-Containing N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanocube as the Lithiophilic Host to Stabilize Li Metal Anodes in Li-O2 Batteries

Li metal, because of its ultrahigh theoretical capacity, has attracted extensive attention. However, uncontrollable dendritic Li formation and infinite electrode dimensional variation hinder application of Li anodes. Herein, Zn,Co bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) were synthesized and further pyrolyzed to obtain Zn,Co-containing N-doped porous carbon nanocube (Zn/Co-N@PCN), which was further applied as lithiophilic host to construct the lithiated Zn/Co-N@PCN (Li-Zn/Co-N@PCN). Zn vapor produced many pores on the carbon framework during calcination process that could store enough Li and thus inhibit the huge electrode volume change. Additionally, there were abundant lithiophilic groups in Zn/Co-N@PCN, such as N- or Co/Zn-based species, which were beneficial to uniform Li deposition. Moreover, the stable and conductive carbon-based matrix could ensure superior and reproducible Li plating/stripping behavior in Zn/Co-N@PCN over cycling. As a result, the Li-Zn/Co-N@PCN anode showed a steady and high columbic efficiency of around 99.0 % for 600 cycles at 0.5 mA cm^-2 . The Li-Zn/Co-N@PCN-based Li-O₂ battery could continuously work beyond 200 cycles, superior to a cell with a Li-Cu anode. These results in this work provide a novel way for construction of the advanced Li-based anodes and the corresponding high-performance Li-O₂ batteries.

Mild and Efficient Heterogeneous Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes Facilitated by a Pyrolytically Activated Dinuclear Ni(II)-Ce(III) Diimine Complex

We communicate the assembly of a solid, Ce-promoted Ni-based composite that was applied as catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitroarenes to afford the corresponding organic amines. The catalytically active material described herein was obtained through pyrolysis of a SiO₂-pellet-supported bimetallic Ni-Ce complex that was readily synthesized prior to use from a MeO-functionalized salen congener, Ni(OAc)₂·4 H₂O, and Ce(NO₃)₃·6 H₂O. Rewardingly, the requisite ligand for the pertinent solution phase precursor was accessible upon straightforward and time-saving imine condensation of ortho-vanillin with 1,3-diamino-2,2′-dimethylpropane. The introduced catalytic protocol is operationally simple in that the whole reaction set-up is quickly put together on the bench without the need of cumbersome handling in a glovebox or related containment systems. Moreover, the advantageous geometry and compact-sized nature of the used pellets renders the catalyst separation and recycling exceptionally easy.

Generation of Cobalt-Containing Nanoparticles on Carbon via Pyrolysis of a Cobalt Corrole and Its Application in the Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes

We report on the manufacture of a state-of-the-art heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst, which is based on a molecularly well-defined phosphine-tagged cobalt corrole complex. This precursor compound is readily synthesized from convenient starting materials while the active material is obtained through wet-impregnation of the pertinent metalliferous macrocycle onto carbon black followed by controlled pyrolysis of the loaded carrier material under an inert gas atmosphere. Thus, the obtained composite was then applied in the heterogeneous hydrogenation of various nitroarenes to yield a vast array of valuable aniline derivatives that were conveniently isolated as their hydrochloride salts. The introduced catalytic protocol is robust and user-friendly with the entire assembly of the reaction set-up enabling the conduction of the experiments on the laboratory bench without any protection from air.

3-Bromopyridine-Heterogenized Phosphotungstic Acid for Efficient Trimerization of Biomass-Derived 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural with 2-Methylfuran to C21 Fuel Precursor

The production of long-chain carbon compounds (C9-C21) from biomass derivatives to alternate traditional fossil diesel is sustainable, eco-friendly, and potentially economic for modern industry. In this work, phosphotungstic acid heterogenized by 3-bromopyridine was achieved using a solvothermal method, which was demonstrated to be efficient for trimerization of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with 2-methylfuran (2-MF) to C21 fuel precursor (57.1% yield) under mild reaction conditions. The heterogeneous acidic catalyst could be reused for four consecutive cycles without obvious loss of activity, and different characterization techniques (e.g., XRD (X-ray diffraction), TG (thermogravimetric analysis), SEM (scanning electron microscope), FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), and BET (Brunauer-Emmet-Teller)) were utilized to investigate the performance of the catalyst. In addition, a plausible reaction pathway was postulated, on the basis of results obtained by NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) and GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometer). This strategy provides a facile and efficient approach to prepare a recyclable acidic catalyst for the production of diesel fuel precursor from biomass via controllable polymerization.

Green and Facile Synthesis of Metal-Organic Framework Cu-BTC-Supported Sn (II)-Substituted Keggin Heteropoly Composites as an Esterification Nanocatalyst for Biodiesel Production

In the present study, metal-organic framework Cu-BTC-supported Sn (II)-substituted Keggin heteropoly nanocomposite (Sn1.5PW/Cu-BTC) was successfully prepared by a simple impregnation method and applied as a novel nanocatalyst for producing biodiesel from oleic acid (OA) through esterification. The nanocatalyst was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption, thermogravimetrics (TG), and NH3-temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD). Accordingly, the synthesized nanocatalyst with a Sn1.5PW/Cu-BTC weight ratio of 1 exhibited a relatively large specific surface area, appropriate pore size, and high acidity. Moreover, an OA conversion of 87.7% was achieved under optimum reaction conditions. The nanocatalyst was reused seven times, and the OA conversion remained at more than 80% after three uses. Kinetic study showed that the esterification reaction followed first-order kinetics, and the activation energy (E a ) was calculated to be 38.3 kJ/mol.
