Abstract
Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), a hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), contaminates milk and dairy products from livestock via ingestion of feed contaminated with a species of Aspergillus. As AFM1 is a Group-II B carcinogen, it is indispensable to develop novel, easy-to-handle, sensitive, portable and cost-effective strategies for its detection. Herein, a covalent organic framework (COF)-based electroactive nanocomposite, Ag2O/g-C3N4-COOH@MA-DBB-COF (silver oxide/carboxy-functionalized graphitic carbon nitride@melamine-dibromo butane COF), is designed to serve as a multifunctional receptor surface. The Ag2O/g-C3N4-COOH@MA-DBB-COF formation was characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy (RAMAN), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and each step of the sensor fabrication was monitored using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Under the optimal conditions, the designed immunosensor permitted the detection of AFM1 in the linear range of 0.03-1000 fg mL-1, with a 0.01 fg mL-1 limit of detection (LOD). The selectivity of the designed immunosensor was validated via an anti-interference study. The practical applicability of the immunosensor was demonstrated by the detection of AFM1 in real milk samples, and good recovery values (97.28-102.62%) were obtained. Furthermore, the developed immunosensor and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were employed in parallel to detect AFM1 in local market milk samples from twenty different sites to validate the performance of the newly designed immunosensor. Additionally, the designed immunosensor was stable over an extended period of time. This work reports a single-step field-portable multifunctional innovative electrochemical immunoreceptor design for on-site and label-free detection of AFM1 in milk samples. Hence, the present study is the first report on the fabrication of a multifunctional innovative electrochemical immunoreceptor based on PGE/Ag2O/g-C3N4-COOH@MA-DBB-COF for the detection of AFM1 in milk samples.

Biotechnol Bioeng 2024; 121:2549-2584. Abstract
Persistent and inappropriate use of antibiotics is causing rife antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide. Common bacterial infections are thus becoming increasingly difficult to treat without the use of last resort antibiotics. This has necessitated a situation where it is imperative to confirm the infection to be bacterial, before treating it with antimicrobial speculatively. Conventional methods of bacteria detection are either culture based which take anywhere between 24 and 96 hor require sophisticated molecular analysis equipment with libraries and trained operators. These are difficult propositions for resource limited community healthcare setups of developing or less developed countries. Customized, inexpensive, point-of-care (PoC) biosensors are thus being researched and developed for rapid detection of bacterial pathogens. The development and optimization of disposable sensor substrates is the first and crucial step in development of such PoC systems. The substrates should facilitate easy charge transfer, a high surface to volume ratio, be tailorable by the various bio-conjugation chemistries, preserve the integrity of the biorecognition element, yet be inexpensive. Such sensor substrates thus need to be thoroughly investigated. Further, if such systems were made disposable, they would attain immunity to biofouling. This article discusses a few potential disposable electrochemical sensor substrates deployed for detection of bacteria for environmental and healthcare applications. The technologies have significant potential in helping reduce bacterial infections and checking AMR. This could help save lives of people succumbing to bacterial infections, as well as improve the overall quality of lives of people in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract
Chemical sensing of harmful species released either from natural or anthropogenic activities is critical to ensuring human safety and health. Over the last decade, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been proven to be potential sensor materials with the possibility of realizing sensing devices for practical applications. CMPs found to be unique among other porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to their high chemical/thermal stability, high surface area, microporosity, efficient host-guest interactions with the analyte, efficient exciton migration along the π-conjugated chains, and tailorable structure to target specific analytes. Several CMP-based optical, electrochemical, colorimetric, and ratiometric sensors with excellent selectivity and sensing performance were reported. This review comprehensively discusses the advances in CMP chemical sensors (powders and thin films) in the detection of nitroaromatic explosives, chemical warfare agents, anions, metal ions, biomolecules, iodine, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with simultaneous delineation of design strategy principles guiding the selectivity and sensitivity of CMP. Preceding this, various photophysical mechanisms responsible for chemical sensing are discussed in detail for convenience. Finally, future challenges to be addressed in the field of CMP chemical sensors are discussed.

Abstract
The key problem that limits the practical applications of nonenzymatic electrochemical sensors in biological media, is the biofouling and chemical fouling of electrodes due to the adsorption of biological molecules and oxidation (reduction) products. Electrode fouling will cause low accuracy, poor stability, and low sensitivity. Here, a simple and efficient antifouling electrode was demonstrated for electrochemical sensing based on covalent-organic framework (COF) TpPA-1 and carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) composites. COF TpPA-1 possesses abundant hydrophilic groups, which assisted the dispersion of CNT in water and formed uniform composites by π-π interaction. In addition, the introduction of CNT into the composites improved the electron transfer rate of COF TpPA-1. The antifouling interface was characterized by electrochemistry, contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrode showed good chemical and bio-fouling resistant performance for the electrochemical detection of β-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and uric acid (UA) in real serum samples.

Abstract
Carbendazim (CBZ) is a widespread fungicide used in crop protection, but the CBZ residues in drinking water, fruits, and vegetables can also cause adverse impacts on public health due to direct exposure. In this paper, a ternary synergistic composite of bimetallic CoCu nanoparticles anchored on covalent organic framework/single-walled carbon nanotube (CoCu/COF/SWCNT) was prepared and further applied as an electrochemical sensing platform for detecting CBZ. The sensor showed a sensitive response performance toward CBZ oxidation, as a result of the enhanced charge transfer ability, large electrochemically active surface area, and high electro-catalytic activity from the rational integration of the ternary components in CoCu/COF/SWCNT. Under the optimal conditions, the proposed sensor exhibited a detection range of 0.001 to 10 μM and a limit detection of 0.65 nM for CBZ detection. In addition, the sensor displayed practical feasibility for the determination of CBZ in water and pear samples with a recovery of 96.1 % to 102.1 %.

Abstract
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is positively correlated with an increased risk of developing cancer in nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic patients. Therefore, it is of great significance for the highly sensitive, highly selective, and timely detection of OTA. We described here an electrochemical aptasensor for OTA analysis, which took advantage of the favorable properties of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) functionalized zinc oxide (ZnO) composites and the intercalative binding between methylene blue (MB) and nucleic acid. There were two label-free aptamers: one to capture OTA and another serving as complementary DNA (cDNA), enabling connection to the ZnO-Au composite’s immobilized electrode. Once OTA was present, the aptamer could capture OTA and detach from the electrode interface, thus, preventing MB from accessing electrode surface for efficient electron transfer; a decreased peak current was monitored by differential pulse voltammetry. The aptasensor presented nice analytical performance for OTA detection in the range of 0.1–30,000 pg·mL−1, with a detection limit of 0.05 pg·mL−1. Moreover, the developed biosensor could be applied to actual sample (wine and beer) analysis.

Abstract
Dopamine (DA), an organic biomolecule that acts as both a hormone and a neurotransmitter, is essential in regulating emotions and metabolism in living organisms. The accurate determination of DA is important because it indicates early signs of serious neurological disorders. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received considerable attention in recent years as promising porous materials with an unrivaled degree of tunability for electrochemical biosensing applications. This study adopted a solvothermal strategy for the synthesis of a conjugated microporous poly(arylene ethynylene)-4 (CMP-4) network using the Sonagashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction. To increase the crystallinity and electrical conductivity of the material, CMP-4 was enveloped around carbon nanotubes (CNTs), followed by iodine doping. When used as an electrochemical probe, the as-synthesized material (I2-CMP-CNT-4) exhibited excellent selectivity and sensitivity to dopamine in the phosphate-buffered solution. The detection limits of the electrochemical sensor were 1 and 1.7 μM based on cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV).

Abstract
V-series nerve agents are very lethal to health and cause the inactivation of acetylcholinesterase which leads to neuromuscular paralysis and, finally, death. Therefore, rapid detection and elimination of V-series nerve agents are very important. Herein, we have carried out a theoretical investigation of carbon nitride quantum dots (C2N) as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of V-series nerve agents, including VX, VS, VE, VG, and VM. Adsorption of V-series nerve agents on C2N quantum dots is explored at M05-2X/6-31++G(d,p) level of theory. The level of theory chosen is quite adequate in systems describing non-bonding interactions. The adsorption behavior of nerve agents is characterized by interaction energy, non-covalent interaction (NCI), Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), frontier molecular orbital (FMO), electron density difference (EDD), and charge transfer analysis. The computed adsorption energies of the studied complexes are in the range of -12.93 to -17.81 kcal/mol, which indicates the nerve agents are physiosorbed onto C2N surface through non-covalent interactions. The non-covalent interactions between V-series and C2N are confirmed through NCI and QTAIM analysis. EDD analysis is carried out to understand electron density shifting, which is further validated by natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. FMO analysis is used to estimate the changes in energy gap of C2N on complexation through HOMO-LUMO energies. These findings suggest that C2N surface is highly selective toward VX, and it might be a promising candidate for the detection of V-series nerve agents.

Abstract
Numerous species of bacteria pose a serious threat to human health and cause several million deaths annually. It is therefore essential to have quick, efficient, and easily operable methods of bacterial cell detection. Herein, we synthesize a novel cationic covalent organic polymer (COP) named CATN through the Menshutkin reaction and evaluate its potential as an impedance sensor for Escherichia coli cells. On account of its positive surface charge (ζ-potential = +21.0 mV) and pyridinium moieties, CATN is expected to interact favorably with bacteria that possess a negatively charged cell surface through electrostatic interactions. The interdigitated electrode arrays were coated with CATN using a simple yet non-traditional method of electrophoresis and then used in two-electrode electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The impedance response showed a linear relationship with the increasing concentration of E. coli. The system was sensitive to bacterial concentrations as low as ∼30 CFU mL-1, which is far below the concentration considered to cause illnesses. The calculated limit of detection was as low as 2 CFU mL-1. This work is a rare example of a COP used in this type of bacteria sensing and is anticipated to stimulate further interest in the synthesis of organic polymers for EIS-based sensors.

Abstract
Sample preparation is an indispensable part of detection of complex samples in pharmaceutical analysis. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has obtained a lot of attention due to its advantages of time saving, less solvent and easily automation. A variety of functional materials are used as sorbents in SPME to carry out selective and high extraction. This review centers around the recent applications of organic molecule-based framework porous materials, such as metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), as SPME coating materials mainly focus on pharmaceutical analysis in food, environment, and biological samples. Four representative extraction devices are introduced, including on-fiber SPME, in-tube SPME, thin film SPME, stir bar SPME. The application prospect of other organic porous materials as sorbents for pharmaceutical analysis are also discussed, such as hyper crosslinked polymers (HCPs) and conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs). The progresses and discusses are provided to offer references for further research focusing on application and development of organic molecule-based framework porous materials in the field of SPME.

Histostar-Functionalized Covalent Organic Framework for Electrochemical Detection of Exosomes. BIOSENSORS 2022; 12:bios12090704. Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are gaining growing interest owing to their various structures and versatility. Since their specific physical–chemical characteristics endow them great usage potentiality in biosensing, we herein have synthesized spherical COFs with regular shape and good dispersion, which are further used for the design of a novel nanoprobe by modifying Histostar on the surface of the COFs. Moreover, we have applied a nanoprobe for the fabrication of an electrochemical biosensor to detect exosomes. Since Histostar is a special polymer, conjugated with many secondary antibodies (IgG), and HRP can increase the availability of HRP at the antigenic site, the biosensor can have a strong signal amplification ability. Meanwhile, since COFs with high porosity can be loaded with a huge amount of Histostar, the sensitivity of the biosensor can be further improved. With such a design, the proposed biosensor can achieve a low exosomes detection limit of 318 particles/µL, and a wide linear detection range from 103 particles/µL to 108 particles/µL. So, this work may offer a promising platform for the ultrasensitive detection of exosomes.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are defined as crystalline organic polymers with programmable topological architectures using properly predesigned building blocks precursors. Since the development of the first COF in 2005, many works are emerging using this kind of material for different applications, such as the development of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. COF shows superb characteristics, such as tuneable pore size and structure, permanent porosity, high surface area, thermal stability, and low density. Apart from these special properties, COF’s electrochemical behaviour can be modulated using electroactive building blocks. Furthermore, the great variety of functional groups that can be inserted in their structures makes them interesting materials to be conjugated with biological recognition elements, such as antibodies, enzymes, DNA probe, aptamer, etc. Moreover, the possibility of linking them with other special nanomaterials opens a wide range of possibilities to develop new electrochemical sensors and biosensors.

Abstract
Herein, we report synthesis of 2D few-layered transparent hydrogen substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) nanosheets and explored its electrochemical characteristics for the first time to develop a nano-interface for cancer biomarker detection [liver cancer (LC) biomarker; ANXA2]. The semiconducting HsGDY (band gap; 1.98 eV) contains considerable number of sp and sp2 hybridised π-electrons with abundant hierarchical pores, thus reveals a negative peripheral charge and high surface area respectively, making it competent to immobilize mass anti-ANXA2 antibodies. The nano-interface platform is fabricated through electrophoretic deposition of HsGDY onto indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrate (50V, 60s) with subsequent immobilization of anti-ANXA2 biomolecules and bovine serum albumin (BSA) to minimize non-specific binding. The pristine HsGDY and fabricated electrodes were characterized using spectroscopic, microscopic, zetasizer, surface area and pore size analyzer as well as electrochemical techniques. The electrochemical response of fabricated HsGDY nano-interface based biosensing platform (BSA/anti-ANXA2/HsGDY/ITO) is investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) techniques, which covers a wider linear detection range in between 0.01 fg mL-1 to 1000 ng mL-1 along with an exceptional sensitivity of 13.8 μA [log (ng mL-1)]-1 cm-2 and 2.8 μA [log (ng mL-1)]-1 cm-2 via CV and DPV techniques, respectively. This developed biosensor has the ability for unprecedented ultralow level i.e., upto 3 molecules of ANXA2 cancer biomarker detection. Moreover, the obtained electrochemical results show excellent correlation with the concentration of ANXA2 cancer biomarker present in LC patients obtained through enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technique.

Abstract
Many materials with nanofluidic channels are exploited to achieve salinity gradient energy conversion. However, most materials are fragile, difficult to process, or only prepared into a limited size, which greatly restricts their practical application in the future. Herein, a covalent organic polymers membrane with high mechanical property and stability is fabricated, which can keep integrity in harsh conditions for up to 1 month. In addition, by using the sol-gel approach, a large-area membrane with an area of 26 × 26 cm is expediently fabricated in lab conditions. When the membrane is applied to salinity gradient energy conversion, the maximum output power density is up to 6.21 W m-2 . This work provides a simple method for the fabrication of large-area membrane for salinity gradient energy conversion in future real-world applications.

Abstract
Antioxidants play a central role in the development and production of food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, to reduce oxidative processes in the human body. Among them, phenolic antioxidants are considered even more efficient than other antioxidants. They are divided into natural and synthetic. The natural antioxidants are generally found in plants and their synthetic counterparts are generally added as preventing agents of lipid oxidation during the processing and storage of fats, oils, and lipid-containing foods: All of them can exhibit different effects on human health, which are not always beneficial. Because of their relevant bioactivity and importance in several sectors, such as agro-food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic, it is crucial to have fast and reliable analysis Rmethods available. In this review, different examples of gold nanomaterial-based electrochemical (bio)sensors used for the rapid and selective detection of phenolic compounds are analyzed and discussed, evidencing the important role of gold nanomaterials, and including systems with or without specific recognition elements, such as biomolecules, enzymes, etc. Moreover, a selection of gold nanomaterials involved in the designing of this kind of (bio)sensor is reported and critically analyzed. Finally, advantages, limitations, and potentialities for practical applications of gold nanomaterial-based electrochemical (bio)sensors for detecting phenolic antioxidants are discussed.

Abstract
A porous nanostructured covalent-organic framework (COF) has been prepared via condensation polymerization between the two building blocks of melem and hexaketocyclohexane octahydrate (represented as M-HO-COF). Basic characterizations revealed that the M-HO-COF network was composed of C=N and highly conjugated aromatic moieties, along with a high surface area, large pore size, remarkable electrochemical activity, and strong bioaffinity toward aptamer strands. Given that the vascular endothelial growth factor 165 (VEGF165)-targeted aptamer was stably anchored over M-HO-COF via weak intermolecular forces, the prepared M-HO-COF network exhibited great potential as a sensitive and selective platform for the impedimetric VEGF165 aptasensor. Consequently, the M-HO-COF-based aptasensor displayed an ultralow limit of detection of 0.18 fg mL-1 within a wide range of VEGF165 concentrations from 1 fg mL-1 to 10 ng mL-1. Considering its strong fluorescence performance, excellent biocompatibility, and small nanosheet-like structure, the obtained COF-based aptasensor showed a superior sensing performance and regeneration capability after 7 regeneration cycles for the detection of osteosarcoma cells (K7M2 cells), which overexpressed with VEGF165, with a low limit of detection of 49 cells mL-1. For real f human serum samples, the obtained COF-based aptasensor exhibits acceptable mean apparent recoveries of 97.41% with a relative standard deviation of 4.60%. Furthermore, the proposed bifunctional aptasensor for the detection VEGF165 and K7M2 cells exhibited good stability, appropriate selectivity toward other biomarkers or normal cells, acceptable reproducibility, and applicability. A bifunctional sensing system was constructed for detecting osteosarcoma cells (K7M2 cells) and VEGF165 based on the a porous nanostructured covalent-organic framework (M-HO-COF) via condensation polymerization between melem and hexaketocyclohexane octahydrate. The M-HO-COF-based aptasensor displayed ultralow detection limit of 0.18 fg mL-1 toward VEGF165 and 49 cell mL-1 for K7M2 cells with high selectivity, acceptable reproducibility, and good stability.

Abstract
Covalent organic frameworks are a class of extended crystalline organic materials that possess unique architectures with high surface areas and tuneable pore sizes. Since the first discovery of the topological frameworks in 2005, COFs have been applied as promising materials in diverse areas such as separation and purification, sensing or catalysis. Considering the need for renewable and clean energy production, many research efforts have recently focused on the application of porous materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this respect, considerable efforts have been devoted to the design and synthesis of COF-based materials for electrochemical applications, including electrodes and membranes for fuel cells, supercapacitors and batteries. This review article highlights the design principles and strategies for the synthesis of COFs with a special focus on their potential for electrochemical applications. Recently suggested hybrid COF materials or COFs with hierarchical porosity will be discussed, which can alleviate the most challenging drawback of COFs for these applications. Finally, the major challenges and future trends of COF materials in electrochemical applications are outlined.
