Atomic Clusters: Structure, Reactivity, Bonding, and Dynamics

A possibility to infer frustrations of supported catalytic clusters from macro-scale observations

Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that dynamic active centres of supported heterogeneous catalysts may, under certain conditions, be frustrated. Such out-of-equilibrium materials are expected to possess unique catalytic properties and also higher level of functionality. The latter is associated with the navigation through the free energy landscapes with energetically close local minima. The lack of common approaches to the study of out-of-equilibrium materials motivates the search for specific ones. This paper suggests a way to infer some valuable information from the interplay between the intensity of reagent supply and regularities of product formation.

DFT-Based Study of the Structure, Stability, and Spectral and Optical Properties of Gas-Phase NbMgn (n = 2-12) Clusters

Gas-phase NbMgn (n = 2-12) clusters were fully searched by CALYPSO software, and then the low-energy isomers were further optimized and calculated under DFT. It is shown that the three lowest energy isomers of NbMgn (n = 3-12) at each size are grown from two seed structures, i.e., tetrahedral and pentahedral structures, and the transition size occurs at the NbMg8 cluster. Interestingly, the relative stability calculations of the NbMg8 cluster ground-state isomer stand out under the examination of several parameters' calculations. The charge-transfer properties of the clusters of the ground-state isomers of various sizes had been comprehensively investigated. In order to be able to provide data guidance for future experimental probing of these ground-state clusters, this work also predicted infrared and Raman spectra at the same level of theoretical calculations. The results show that the multipeak nature of the IR and Raman spectra predicts that it is difficult to distinguish them directly. Finally, the optical properties of these clusters were investigated by calculating the static linear, second-order nonlinear, and third-order nonlinear coefficients. Importantly and interestingly, the NbMg8 cluster was shown to have superior nonlinear optical characteristics to all other clusters; thus, it is a powerful candidate for a potentially ultrasensitive nonlinear optical response device for some special purpose.

The hydration of Li+ and Mg2+ in subnano carbon nanotubes using a multiscale theoretical approach

The separation of brines with high Mg/Li mass ratios is a huge challenge. To provide a theoretical basis for the design of separation materials, the hydration of Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ in confinement using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the 1-D nanopore model was investigated using a multiscale theoretical approach. According to the analysis of the first coordination layer of cations, we determined that the coordination shells of two cations exist inside CNTs, while the second coordination shells of the cations are unstable. Moreover, the results of the structure analysis indicate that the hydration layer of Li⁺ is not complete in CNTs with diameters of 0.73, 0.87, and 1.00 nm. However, this does not occur in the 0.60 nm CNT, which is explained by the formation of contact ion pairs (CIP) between Li⁺ and Cl^- that go through a unstable solvent-shared ion pair [Li(H₂O)₄]⁺, and this research was further extended by 400 ns in the 0.60 nm CNT to address the aforementioned results. However, the hydration layer of Mg²⁺ is complete and not sensitive to the diameter of CNTs using molecular dynamics simulation and an ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) method. Furthermore, the results of the orientation distribution of Li⁺ and Mg²⁺ indicate that the water molecules around Mg²⁺ are more ordered than water molecules around Li⁺ in the CNTs and are more analogous to the bulk solution. We conclude that it is energetically unfavorable to confine Li⁺ inside the 0.60-nm diameter CNT, while it is favorable for confining Li⁺ inside the other four CNTs and Mg²⁺ in all CNTs, which is driven by the strong electrostatic interaction between cations and Cl^-. In addition, the interaction between cations and water molecules in the five CNTs was also analyzed from the non-covalent interaction (NCI) perspective by AIMD.

CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid on Pd-Cu nanoclusters: a DFT study

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) hydrogenation to formic acid is a promising method for the conversion of CO₂ to useful organic products. The interaction of CO₂ with hydrogen (H₂) on Pd_mCu_n (m + n = 4, 8 and 13) clusters to form formic acid (HCOOH) has been explored using density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations. Pd₂Cu₂, Pd₄Cu₄ and 13-atom Pd₁₂Cu clusters are found to be the most stable among all of the Pd_mCu_n (m + n = 4, 8 and 13) clusters with binding energies of -1.75, -2.16 and -2.40 eV per atom, respectively. CO₂ molecules get adsorbed on the Pd₂Cu₂, Pd₄Cu₄ and Pd₁₂Cu clusters in an inverted V-shaped way with adsorption energies of -0.91, -0.96 and -0.44 eV, respectively. The hydrogenation of CO₂ to form formate goes through a unidentate structure that rapidly transforms into the bidentate structure. To determine the transition state structures and minimum energy paths (MEPs) for CO₂ hydrogenation to formic acid, the climbing image nudge elastic band (CI-NEB) method has been adopted. The activation barriers for the formation of formic acid from formate on Pd₂Cu₂ and Pd₄Cu₄ are calculated to be 0.79 and 0.68 eV, respectively whereas that on the Pd₁₂Cu cluster is 1.77 eV. The enthalpy for the overall process of CO₂ hydrogenation to formic acid on the Pd₂Cu₂, Pd₄Cu₄ and Pd₁₂Cu clusters are found to be 0.83, 0.48 and 0.63 eV, respectively. Analysis of the density of states (DOS) spectra show that the 4d orbital of Pd, the 3d orbital of Cu, and the 2p orbitals of C and O atoms are involved in the bonding between CO₂ molecules and the Pd₂Cu₂ clusters. The CO₂ adsorption on the Pd_mCu_n (m + n = 4 and 8) clusters has also been explained in terms of the charge density distribution analysis.

Recent advances in in silico design and characterization of superalkali-based materials and their potential applications: A review

In the advancement of novel materials, chemistry plays a vital role in developing the realm where we survive. Superalkalis are a group of clusters/molecules having lower ionization potentials (IPs) than that of the cesium atom (3.89 eV) and thus, show excellent reducing properties. However, the chemical industry and material science both heavily rely on such reducing substances; an in silico approach-based design and characterization of superalkalis have been the focus of ongoing studies in this area along with their potential applications. However, although superalkalis have been substantially sophisticated materials over the past couple of decades, there is still room for enumeration of the recent progress going on in various interesting species using computational experiments. In this review, the recent developments in designing/modeling and characterization (theoretically) of a variety of superalkali-based materials have been summarized along with their potential applications. Theoretically acquired properties of some novel superalkali cations (Li3 +) and C6Li6 species, etc. for capturing and storing CO2/N2 molecules have been unveiled in this report. Additionally, this report unravels the first-order polarizability-based nonlinear optical (NLO) response features of numerous computationally designed novel superalkali-based materials, for instance, fullerene-like mixed-superalkali-doped B12N12 and B12P12 nanoclusters with good UV transparency and mixed-valent superalkali-based CaN3Ca (a high-sensitivity alkali-earth-based aromatic multi-state NLO molecular switch, and lead-founded halide perovskites designed by incorporating superalkalis, supersalts, and so on) which can indeed be used as a new kind of electronic nanodevice used in designing hi-tech NLO materials. Understanding the mere interactions of alkalides in the gas and liquid phases and the potential to influence how such systems can be extended and applied in the future are also highlighted in this survey. In addition to offering an overview of this research area, it is expected that this review will also provide new insights into the possibility of expanding both the experimental synthesis and the practical use of superalkalis and their related species. Superalkalis present the intriguing possibility of acting as cutting-edge construction blocks of nanomaterials with highly modifiable features that may be utilized for a wide-ranging prospective application.

Cu n Clusters (n = 13, 43, and 55) as Possible Degradant Agents of mSF6 Molecules (m = 1, 2): A DFT Study

In order to obtain the structural and electronic properties of pristine copper clusters and Cu₁₃-SF₆, Cu₄₃-SF₆, Cu₅₅-SF₆, Cu₁₃-2SF₆, Cu₄₃-2SF₆, and Cu₅₅-2SF₆ systems, DFT calculations were carried out. For Cu₁₃-mSF₆, its surface suffers a drastic deformation, and Cu₄₃-mSF₆ at its outer surface reveals strong interaction for the first chemical molecule; when the second molecule is interacting, these outer surfaces are not severely affected. These two cases degraded fully the first SF₆ molecule; however the second molecule is bonded to the latter systems and for Cu₅₅-mSF₆ (m = 1 and 2) a structural transformation from SF₆ →SF₄ appears as well as inner and outer shells that display slight deformations. The electronic gaps do not exhibit drastic changes after adsorption of mSF₆ molecules, and the magnetic moment remains without alterations. The whole system shows thermal and vibrational stability. In addition, for Cu₁₃-mSF₆ the values of the optical gap and intensity of the optical exhibit changes with respect to the pristine case (Cu₁₃), and the rest of the systems do not exhibit major oscillations. These icosahedral copper clusters emerge as a good option to degrade mSF₆ molecules.

Multiscale Modeling of Broadband Perfect Absorbers Based on Gold Metallic Molecules

The modeling of functional photonic devices that rely on molecular materials continues to be a major contemporary challenge. It is a challenge because, in the Maxwell equations, which govern the light-matter interaction, material properties are primarily introduced on phenomenological grounds and not from first principles. To overcome such limitations, we outline a multiscale modeling approach that bridges multiple length scales. We can predict with our approach the optical response of a photonic device that exploits in its design molecular materials whose properties were determined using time-dependent density functional theory. The specifically considered device is a broadband perfect absorber that uses in part a thin film comprising gold molecules made from 144 atoms. Our methodology discloses various chemical and physical effects that define such a device's response. Our methodology is versatile, and a larger number of applications will profit from this development.

Recent Progress on Revealing 3D Structure of Electrocatalysts Using Advanced 3D Electron Tomography: A Mini Review

Electrocatalysis plays a key role in clean energy innovation. In order to design more efficient, durable and selective electrocatalysts, a thorough understanding of the unique link between 3D structures and properties is essential yet challenging. Advanced 3D electron tomography offers an effective approach to reveal 3D structures by transmission electron microscopy. This mini-review summarizes recent progress on revealing 3D structures of electrocatalysts using 3D electron tomography. 3D electron tomography at nanoscale and atomic scale are discussed, respectively, where morphology, composition, porous structure, surface crystallography and atomic distribution can be revealed and correlated to the performance of electrocatalysts. (Quasi) in-situ 3D electron tomography is further discussed with particular focus on its impact on electrocatalysts' durability investigation and post-treatment. Finally, perspectives on future developments of 3D electron tomography for eletrocatalysis is discussed.
