Facile Synthesis of Cross-linked Hyperbranched Polyamidoamines Dendrimers for Efficient Hg(Ⅱ) Removal From Water

Synthesis of salicylaldehyde tailored PAMAM dendrimers/chitosan for adsorption of aqueous Hg(II): Performance and mechanism

Water pollution caused by Hg(II) exerts hazardous effect to environmental safety and human health. Herein, a family of salicylaldehyde tailored poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers/chitosan composites (G0-S/CTS, G1-S/CTS, and G2-S/CTS) were prepared and used for the removal of Hg(II) from water solution. The adsorption performance of the as-prepared composites for Hg(II) was thoroughly demonstrated by determining various influencing factors. G0-S/CTS, G1-S/CTS and G2-S/CTS exhibited competitive adsorption capacity and good adsorption selective property for Hg(II). The maximum adsorption capacity of G0-S/CTS, G1-S/CTS and G2-S/CTS for Hg(II) were 1.86, 2.18 and 4.47 mmol‧g-1, respectively. The adsorption for Hg(II) could be enhanced by raising initial Hg(II) concentration and temperature. The adsorption process was dominated by film diffusion processes with monolayer adsorption behavior. The functional groups of NH2, CONH, CN, OH, CO and CN were mainly responsible for the adsorption of Hg(II). G0-S/CTS, G1-S/CTS and G2-S/CTS displayed good regeneration property and the regenerate rate maintained 95.00 % after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The as-prepared adsorbents could be potentially used for the efficient removal of Hg(II) from aqueous solution.

Elevated Adsorption of Lead and Arsenic over Silver Nanoparticles Deposited on Poly(amidoamine) Grafted Carbon Nanotubes

An efficient adsorbent, CNTs-PAMAM-Ag, was prepared by grafting fourth-generation aromatic poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and successive deposition of Ag nanoparticles. The FT-IR, XRD, TEM and XPS results confirmed the successful grafting of PAMAM onto CNTs and deposition of Ag nanoparticles. The absorption efficiency of CNTs-PAMAM-Ag was evaluated by estimating the adsorption of two toxic contaminants in water, viz., Pb(II) and As(III). Using CNTs-PAMAM-Ag, about 99 and 76% of Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption, respectively, were attained within 15 min. The controlling mechanisms for Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption dynamics were revealed by applying pseudo-first and second-order kinetic models. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model followed the adsorption of Pb(II) and As(III). Therefore, the incidence of chemisorption through sharing or exchanging electrons between Pb(II) or As(III) ions and CNTs-PAMAM-Ag could be the rate-controlling step in the adsorption process. Further, the Weber-Morris intraparticle pore diffusion model was employed to find the reaction pathways and the rate-controlling step in the adsorption. It revealed that intraparticle diffusion was not a rate-controlling step in the adsorption of Pb(II) and As(III); instead, it was controlled by both intraparticle diffusion and the boundary layer effect. The adsorption equilibrium was evaluated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The kinetic data of Pb(II) and As(III) adsorption was adequately fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model compared to the Freundlich and Temkin models.

The Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions by Poly (Amidoamine) Dendrimer-Functionalized Nanomaterials: A Review

Rapid industrialization has resulted in serious heavy metal pollution. The removal of heavy metal ions from solutions is very important for environmental safety and human health. Poly (amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers are artificial macromolecular materials with unique physical and chemical properties. Abundant amide bonds and amino functional groups provide them with a high affinity for heavy metal ions. Herein, PAMAM-functionalized adsorbents are reviewed in terms of different nanomaterial substrates. Approaches in which PAMAM is grafted onto the surfaces of substrates are described in detail. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics of these adsorbents are also discussed. The effects of PAMAM generation, pH, adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, thermodynamics, and ionic strength on adsorption performance are summarized. Adsorption mechanisms and the further functionalization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents are reviewed. In addition to the positive results, existing problems are also put forward in order to provide a reference for the optimization of PAMAM-grafted adsorbents of heavy metal ions.

Adsorption and Removal of Mercury(II) by a Crosslinked Hyperbranched Polymer Modified via Sulfhydryl

In this study, the highly crosslinked hyperbranched polyamide-amines (H-PAMAMs) were first prepared via one-pot methods and then modified with thiourea to synthesize a novel adsorbent containing sulfhydryl groups (CHAP-SH), which was used to adsorb Hg(II) ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption characteristics and mechanism of CHAP-SH for Hg(II) ions were systematically studied. As expected, CHAP-SH exhibited a rapid removal performance toward Hg(II), and the maximum adsorption capacity was 282.74 mg/g at 318 K and pH = 4.5. The whole adsorption behavior could be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir and Redlich-Peterson adsorption isotherm models, which reflected that the adsorption process was mainly monolayer chemisorption. Meanwhile, CHAP-SH had strong selectivity for Hg(II) in the presence of multimetal ions, and it had excellent recoverability after five cycles. In order to further elucidate the adsorption mechanism, the adsorbents before and after adsorption were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and the results showed that the nitrogen-containing, oxygen-containing, and sulfur-containing groups in the adsorbent molecule had synergistic complexation with Hg(II). These results indicated that the adsorbents had great potential in the future treatment of aqueous solutions containing Hg(II).
